Saya pats Sunamaru on the side of his neck, quietly assuring him that action would soon to come. Fed and full the bird was eager to burn off some calories, and Saya was no different. She trusted herself, though, and by extension she trusted her clones. It felt like another eternity while waiting from word back, but once the clone popped she’d get the full experience of the clone’s scouting mission.
"Finally! Alright, time to move out.”
She hops up easily, sliding atop Sunamaru and slipping a hand between his feathers. She grabs the only strap she was permitted for grip, and points ahead. "North, then east. I’ll guide, you run. We’re on his trail now, and he’s finally stopping for some tricks. We’re gonna have to avoid a bear, but no big deal for you, right?”
"Avoid, can’t we fight it?”
"Not right now. Besides, you’ve already eaten. Let’s worry about Kazuto for now. Hunting shinobi is one of your favorite games isn’t it?” Saya grins a bit. "I’m not sure I could ever do it without you, so I definitely need the best of the best helping me.”
The bird ruffles his feathers, the crest on his head suddenly shooting upright. "Of course! Then let’s get to it!”
Saya laughs softly, the sound cut short as Sunamaru suddenly takes off like a shot. She squeezes the strap tighter, holding on against the g-forces as the roadrunner’s acceleration is near instant. From standstill to a bolt of lightning, Sunamaru tears into the woods with reckless and joyous abandon. For as much as Saya loved to fight, so too did the bird love to sprint. He was a proud bird, and Saya knew just how to talk to him.
The duo remain on the ground for some time, Saya guiding him only by shifting her weight. When she leaned right, Sunamaru turned right, the two acting as a better team than Saya ever had with other humans. She was a loner, and so was Sunamaru. Perhaps that was why the two hit it off so well. Well, that and both were valiant and fearless warriors, even if Saya was the smarter of the pair.
After several hundred yards of tearing up the undergrowth and leaf litter, the bird gives a little hop. His large foot lands on a branch and he starts propelling himself through the trees. Faster and faster the two run, the world around Saya becoming a blur that even she has a hard time keeping up with.
"100 meters.”
Before she can even finishes the words the bird has arrived, and stops on a dime. He perches atop a familiar branch, and Saya gives a slow look around. A hand lifts to comb through her snow tresses, the wind always having a knack for tangling them.
"Yeah.. Right here. Great job..”
Picking out the diverging trail was easy, though it seemed an act of desperation. Sure she challenged him, but all he had to do was cover his tracks better and she’d have been lost. Still, this called for some investigation. She sits up and crosses her fingers again, popping out a trio of clones. With the two still lurking around the periphery of her hut, she was at her limit. Clones were never her speciality, but she enjoyed using them for situations like this.
The three clones immediately start to follow three different trails, however they don’t go far.
"These trails are so obvious..” she mutters to herself, carefully considering the various options available. "Which way would you have gone?”
The bird scoffs. "Like I’d leave a trail running AWAY..”
"Fair..” she notes with a smirk, then leans down to investigate closer. "So obvious. I mean, he knows I’m a tracker. I warned him about that. So.. He didn’t cover his trail at all, then made some clones and split up here. Trying to give me more paths to pick from is certainly a good idea, but it shows a certain desperation.”
Her eyes follow the path that continued on in the same direction he was originally running. As she does her clones switch trails, following a few through the woods to see where they went. "No doubt I’ll be walking into six.. Twelve.. Eighteen different traps, so let’s pick our poison carefully, mmm? My gut tells me that his confidence is growing. With 7 trails to pick from, I’m sure he thinks he’s buying time.. But what would be his play?”
"We could just go back home and wait for him to come find us. Let him stay hidden all night and wear down his patience like you used to do with your kids.”
That gets a good laugh out of Saya. Oh, that’d be so cruel. "No.. no, that’s a great idea, but then I’d lose the game. We have to find him. I know, you don’t enjoy tracking as much as I do, but there’s going to be a little fight at the end up it, so stay focused.”
The prospect of a fight shifts Sunamaru back to the task at hand. At the same time all 3 of the new clones return to report.
"They’re all mostly obvious trails. Traps, undoubtedly”, says the first clone to the small council of Saya’s.
"If I were him, I would have done the same.”
"But if he was you, he’d have left much less of a trail. Can’t he control the trees, why hasn’t he done that? Build a whole new forest to cover your tracks, and only the sensors are gonna follow you.”
"Good points, but I think he’s trying to play by the unspoken rules of the game. He probably also wants to fight me. I mean, who wouldn’t?” The real smile Saya smiles brighter at her clones, which all return her smile and a little laugh. "Okay, so, I think we’re getting somewhere. As I see it, we keep going straight. I don’t think he knows the Forest of Death well enough to have any designated hiding spots, nor would be know where all the best places to battle are. Because of that, he did this. He’s creating a challenge to see if I’m up to it.. However, he has no real destination in mind. He just wants to find a place to hide. He sent his clones out in every direction, but.. Well..” She points ahead of herself as she trails off.
The other Saya’s look in that direction, then nod in agreement.
"If he doesn’t know where he’s going, then why would he change course?” replies the first clone.
"Exactly.” Saya replies. "Shinobi are creatures of instinct, it's why we train so hard, and the escape instinct says to increase the distance between yourself and your predator. Any direction except straight slows his overall progress down. Prey doesn’t turn unless the predator is on their tail, or if they know of a safe haven near their location. I think we can rule out both of those.”
"But he’s not trying to escape. He’s trying to hide”, counters a clone. This causes Saya to ponder for a moment again.
"I think the same rules still apply. He is in flight regardless, attempting to evade me, to put as much distance between us as possible so that he can set up his traps and lie in wait. While he isn’t trying to actually escape, his is still playing the part of the prey. Run. Hide. Wait. Those are his motives, those are his win conditions.”
The clone nods in agreement. The other two clones also nod in agreement.
"Alright. So, think like a mouse then. How best to avoid the cat?” She points in different directions. "All of these are traps. Each one, and at the end up each of them will either wait a clone.. or nothing at all. The direct path is mine.”
"Of course. I’m not so sure we should even investigate the others, but I suppose fun is fun.” The clone gives Saya a little smirk.
"Well, I think you should. Pick a trail. Follow it carefully, and let’s just report back when we find some traps. I’m going to follow this path to completion, so don’t go popping yourselves too soon. Just if you find something that is of interest or importance. Why am I telling you this, you’re all smart nin.”
"Right.”
"Right.”
"Right.”
All three clones spoke in unison, before suddenly disappearing again. Off they went to cover half of the trails provided, while Saya and Sunamaru set forth once again. They’d have to slow down again. As such, Saya slips easily off of Sunamaru’s back. "Play bodyguard. You know, pull me out if I get in over my head. Trail me at a distance, I’ll track.”
Off she went a moment later, leaping to the next logical tree and scanning for tracks. She found them, and thus her game continued. She was still on Kazuto’s trail, though she never knew when it would end. Careful eyes keep watch for traps, wires, notes, and lord knows what a Senju can do with the trees. She feared a tree suddenly coming alive and trying to eat her, but surely that was just her imagination. Then again, shinobi could do some impressive things.
On the other paths her clones make much better progress, speeding along with no care for their own safety. They were clones, if they fell into a trap and died, all it would do was provide Saya with a better picture of the battleground.
