[attr="class","butt-box2"]With a look of malice in her eyes, the woman dropped down and grabbed Hana’s scythe and began running towards Ayane. The sack cloth mask she was wearing came off, and she bore a resemblance to the mayor’s daughter, Mai. Once beautiful and dainty, but now burned beyond repair and fierce.

She managed to slip past Ayane’s puppets and got dangerously close with the scythe. As she arched it back and started to bring it down, Chitoku was forced into action. Breathing fūton chakra into a shuriken, he threw it towards her with a rapid speed. It sank into her forehead and she jerked back, dropping the weapon and reaching for her face to feel the deeply embedded projectile that cracked into her skull and punctured her frontal lobe.

Her death throes were strange. Her body twitched and convulsed while she groaned unintelligible words. Knowing he could not save her, Chitoku fetched Hanzo’s ax and decapitated her. It was the most humane execution he could provide.

Dropping the ax, Chitoku shook and looked at his hands. He stood silently with his back turned to Ayane, damp spots beginning to appear on the back of his clothes. Sweat dripped down his arms and neck. Not sweat, she’d realize, but tears.

Upset as he was, he lost concentration on his genjutsu. Yuto grimaced and knocked an arrow, shooting it towards the Dodomeki.

From a young age Chitoku was implanted with preserved eyes of deceased clansmen all over his body. Coverage includes both his arms (5 on each arm), torso (9 eyes), and back (7 eyes) effectively granting him a 360 degree field of vision when his chest is uncovered and a plethora of eyes to use as visual triggers for certain genjutsu. When all but his arms are covered there are small pockets of the field which only fall into his peripheral vision.

This gift comes at a price, as he is more susceptible to seeing visual triggers himself or having the soft tissues of the eye damaged. In case of being blinded, covered eyes can be uncovered to provide sight as well, although the more eyes that are blinded or damaged the less coverage he has with line of sight.

Ayane was momentarily stunned as the mask fell off of the woman. She recognized Mei as the mayor’s daughter. They'd been friends way back in the day. Well, at least as good friends as she’d been with Hana when they were kids. She didn't understand why all these people were so intent on killing them now, when they used to play house in the backyard and trade snacks at lunchtime. Something about this world was broken, she was sure about that. But it didn't matter now. All that mattered was Chitoku’s safety. He was the only one she could trust. He was the one that kept her alive and sane all this time. They’d kept moving and become stronger. These people had chosen to stand in place; unable to rebuild and unable to move forward. She absolutely refused to let them turn him into a villain or a martyr to console their hurt feelings. Everyone had suffered. She had suffered. He had suffered. She wouldn't be a victim anymore.

Mei attacked Chitoku and in her panic Ayane forgot about her puppets. She grabbed him by his shoulders and spun around him, using her body as a shield and taking the blow in the back. She let out a cry of pain. It wasn't fatal but it hurt enough to drop her to her knees.

[attr="class","butt-box2"]Chitoku grimaced when he saw Yuto’s arrow dig into Ayane’s flesh. Forgetting everything else, a cold anger overtook him as he pulled a shuriken from inside his jacket and exhaled fūton chakra into it. It ripped through the air and the archer tried to guess its trajectory, but it swerved left and right. Thinking that the throw was off he didn’t move to dodge and began knocking a second arrow.

At the last moment the shuriken corrected course and embedded itself in his throat. He fell back and held his wound, gasping and gurgling. In panic, they ripped it from their flesh. Yuto’s neck was opened up like a levy had broken, and soon began to turn blue as he drowned in his own blood.

Chitoku rushed to Ayane’s side. The sound of the woman trapped in her puppet screaming in the background. He placed a hand on her back and started to heal it while pulling the arrow at the same time to reduce the blood loss as much as possible. His way of healing was painful though, as if he hadn’t quite been trained properly to do it.

"I’m sorry,” he said. "Are you okay? I’m so sorry—”

Ayane was barely aware of the brutal death of the attacker as she stumbled to her knees. Her puppets falling limply to the ground. Her peripheral vision was fuzzy but she could still here Hana screaming from within the tummy of her bear. Wouldn't that be a terrible way to die? She thought savagely, alone in the dark. She felt dizzy.

Chitoku returned. She flinched a little bit when he went to grab the arrow. She didn't like the idea of moving it but she had seen him fix people before. He wasn’t the best doctor but She trusted he wouldn’t let her die. Ayane inhaled sharply through her teeth; she did her best not to scream as he pulled the arrow out through her back. She felt an itchy, uncomfortable wave of heat as her wound closed.

Afterwards it was tender but she wasn't worried about dying from blood loss anymore. Still, she was feeling irritated and he kept apologizing. "Are you stupid? Why would you think I would just let you just give up on yourself like that? Don't you know… Don't you know?”

His adrenaline rush began to calm and the screaming inside the bear began to subside. Hana was probably unconscious, and while they’d probably let her out he wondered if death would be more merciful now that they’d done away with their means of survival.

Ayane’s question left him pale and a sick feeling rose up in his stomach seeing her so irritated with him. Apologizing was all that he could think to do, but didn’t think she wanted to hear it. Maybe they could understand if they understood better why he felt how he did.

"My clan was supposed to protect the village,” he said. "When the building collapsed on my mom, I was selfish and spent all my time trying to save her instead of stopping them. I didn’t know anyone else survived, or I could have helped like I helped you.”

He paused for a moment and thought about what he just said and looked down at the ground. "But even though I would have acted differently if I knew they survived. I am glad that it was just us, because I never fit in or had friends like you did. I feel selfish for even thinking that, but its true.”

"They probably hid like cowards. That's how I lived.” She was crying now. "I hid in a cabinet and I listened to my family die. I didn't even try to help them. So if you feel bad, how do you think I feel?”

She looked around at the dead villagers, "Good riddance! They were bad people and they got what they deserved. The truth is that you are better than all of them but it has nothing to do with your clan. You’re clever, and you’re loyal, and you have a good heart.”

Ayane sniffed and whipped her eyes. She was getting calmer now and she felt bad for scalding him. She knew his intentions were good, he just didn’t consider the consequences. "Don't be so reckless with your life because I couldn't go on without you. I would have died just now defending you. You’re my world now and I can’t start over again.”

He stood up and began walking towards the windmill. "Let’s go get the pig… and the girl too I guess.”

Making their way to the windmill, the Dodomeki poked his arm inside and looked around with one of his limb-eyes. There was no sign of danger, and a young woman in a red kimono shrieked at the sight of him through a piece of tape on her mouth. There was no sign of the pig.

"Shhhh…” Chitoku said, pulling the tape from the young lady’s mouth. "We are here to take you back home. Noone is going to hurt you. But, can you tell us if there was a really fat pig here?”

The girl whimpered for a moment, a pouty lip quivering before she exhaled a deep breath. "A pig? Uhm, yes actually, my pa's hog. They were going to eat it but then another group of bandits came and demanded it as tribute. I think this here group belongs to a bigger outfit.”

Chitoku sighed and glanced back at Ayane. He knew that pig was a big priority.

"Okay, please tell us everything you know along the way back to your parents house.”
