With a little help, he was hauled up to his feet. His body felt sapped of strength, as if he had been running for days without sleep or as if he had been fighting for hours on end. It wasn't his chakra, his chakra felt as full as it ever had, but it was his muscles. His entire body ached, yet still he carried on unperturbed, moving through the Mountain halls.
Strangely, as long as he was relying on his subconscious abilities, it seemed that he was able to walk fine throughout the halls, avoiding obstacles as they came too close and not tripping over. However, the moment he tried to access it actively, the moment he tried to think about what he was doing, he found himself bumping into walls and almost tripping over.
Fortunately for him he never quite took a spill, but there were more than a few near misses until he learned to simply rely on his subconscious.
The entire time he walked, however, he found himself calmed by the strong, firm hand of his mentor. Though he was about the same age as her, there was a dearth of experience there that could not be ignored. She knew what she was talking about and whilst he was fumbling like an infant she was able to casually walk through the dark as if it was as clear as daylight.
"So, how long?" Sho asked, his voice a little uncertain.
"How long until most people can do this actively?" Technically, there was no rush. Once learned, it was a skill that he would have for the rest of his life as a Shinobi. However, he knew that the elections wouldn't wait forever for them.
They were going to happen sooner or later, and though there was no official date for them as of yet, they could be called at any time.
If he wasn't at least as skilled as they were by then, if he hadn't shown himself as capable by then, then the only point in his favor would be his Mokuton. Whilst that was a potent advantage in of itself, it almost certainly wouldn't be enough to swing the entire election.
He needed something more, something that made him stand out from more than just a "miracle child" perspective.
Still, sooner or later, as per his request, the pair found themselves standing at the mouth of the mountain. Immediately, Sho could tell something was wrong. Kumogakure was always sunny, lacking a lot of cover from trees and other natural obstacles, but just looking at the opening into the sunlight he could tell that it was bright. Had it always been this bright?
No, it felt... wrong. It felt acerbic, caustic like bleach.
A shiver went up Sho's spine as he looked into the sunlight for the first time in what felt like days. He had been in it earlier that same day and yet it felt completely different, like he was seeing colour for the first time. Still, he could feel the eyes of those that had participated in the ritual standing behind him, waiting for him to continue on.
Letting go of Eri's hand, he walked forwards towards the light, stepping out into the light of the sun.
His scream could be heard back within the core of the mountain.
