Well... this wasn't good.

Straw sandals clacked against the ground as a boy made his way along a dirt path. "Now where am I..." he thought aloud, stopping for a moment to shift the paper around. A large outdated map hung unfurled in one hand and he stared at it in pure befuddlement as he moved. This was crazy! After rowing all the way to the Port City in Tea Country, sinking the rowboat that most definitely did not belong to him, swimming to shore, and finding some food he made his way up through the Land of Tea and into the southernmost part of the Land of Fire. So... how in the world did he manage to get this turned around?!

A hand came up to rub the back of his head, map and all as he groaned. "Yama'd kill me if he knew I got lost." And it was true too. His uncle had made damn sure he knew how to take care of himself. But getting around Kika Island was one thing. Entire nations? Very different. The boy readjusted his bō which was currently resting on his shoulder, a blanket bundled up with everything he owned tied to one end. "Well..." he said to himself, thinking for a moment before shrugging and continuing to walk. Surely he'd run into someone or something if he just kept walking in the same direction... right?

As Eiji tromped through the woods lost as he was he'd soon hear the distant sound of running water and smell the delicious scent of cooking food and the smell of what could only be tea. Should he follow his nose it wouldn't be long until he found himself wandering up on a small campsite along the river. A smokeless campfire burning in a low pit over which sat a kettle and beside it strung up on sticks some cubed meat that looked like rabbit sectioned in between mushrooms and what looked to be potatoes drizzled with some sort of glaze.

The owner of said food not too far off as a woman with dark crimson hair, and sharp scarlet eyes watched him somewhat warily from where she sat on a large sun warmed rock beside the river. Her feet bare and the woman clad in nothing more then a black tank top and black shorts along with her weapon pouch. Leaving the strange burn like scars the marred her shoulder and collarbone stretching down to where they were hidden beneath her shirt on display along with the ugly gash scar across her throat where it was clear someone had made, and failed, at an attempt to rip it out. Her kumogakure headband sitting beside her on the rock glinting dully in the light. The rest of her clothes submerged in the water where it was clear she'd been in the process of washing them.

"Good afternoon?" The Kumogakure Kunoichi, who looked to be in her early twenties, called out. Her voice warm if a bit wary as her gaze skirted over Eiji looking for any sign of identification on him to know his allegiance. "I wasn't expecting guests at my camp. Forgive me for greeting you so underdressed." She lied with a smile. Her weapon pouch wouldn't be strapped to her leg had he caught her completely unaware.

Due to her proficiency with this technique, Azarea can currently passively sense chakra up to 500 meters and actively at 2.5 kilometers.

A wonderful, delicious smell stopped him dead in his tracks.

Followed by a comically loud stomach rumbling that was enough to scare a few nearby birds. Before he could follow his nose a voice called out to him and the boy turned to see a woman with red hair seated on a rock by the river. "Oh. he spoke, clearly oblivious to her presence before. "Hi!" She had what some might describe as an unusual appearance but that didn't seem to bother him one bit. He was a wild kid who lived in a mountain home on an island up until a few days ago, after all. In fact it was the opposite. He thought she looked cool! And then some...

She seemed to be in a state of undress and apologized for it. He just laughed. "Don't worry." he said doing absolutely nothing to avert his eyes. "I don't like clothes either." An odd sentiment perhaps, but true. They were restricting. That's why he always wore his orange patchwork yukata. Freedom! After staring at her for a few moments too long a large smile graced his face. "You're pretty!" Something else she had said brought his attention back round and his large eyes glanced about, taking in the camp. "What are you doing out here?" The youth did happen to notice a forehead protector resting beside her on the rock and wondered. Was she a ninja like Yama?

Introductions

Her lips twitched into a smile at his exuberant greeting and comment about clothes. Admittedly she wasn't in a state of near undress by choice, but she could understand his sentiment. The teen, at least she thought he looks in his teens, enthusiasm infectious and the way he blurted out that she was pretty catching her a touch off guard as she blinked in surprise. Her cold wary expression thawing a little into something warm and amused. Eiji's blunt compliments reminding her in no small part of her own partner. Though he didn't look to be related to the Hyuuga so she wasn't dealing with some strange distant cousin of her Shigure.

"Thank you," She responds not unkindly to the compliment, "I just finished up some work and was cleaning up before I head back to report in. Best to get salt water out of your clothes soon as possible." She explains keeping her work somewhat vague, but she wasn't lying about the salt water. If there happened to be a bit of blood mixed in then well she probably got that out the first wash after dealing with those pirates.

"I'm Azarea or Kumogakure no Sato," The Kumo nin introduced herself, "Are you lost? I don't think I've seen you among Konoha's forces before." She inquires with a curious tilt of her head. While there was no guarantee she was fairly certain she would have seen the black haired nin around if that were the case. At least he felt like nin from his chakra stores, but she could be mistaken. Perhaps he was like Sozin? Capable of containing, but not utilizing chakra.

The boy nodded as she thanked him.

He was only being honest. The woman brought up salt water and he threw his head back giving an exaggerated sigh. "Ugh, I know! I just sank my- well... a rowboat in the ocean yesterday and had to swim a few miles to shore." He wiggled a bit while standing in place, salt stains covering his entire getup including the bundle over his shoulder. A hand came up to scratch his head. "All in my hair and everything." Going back to her reason though he placed a hand on his hip and tilted his head. He was about to ask what she did for work when she introduced herself. "Ah, so you are a ninja!" His staff rose to point at her headband. "Cool." The luggage still dangled precariously from the bō's tip as he stood and smiled.

Bringing the end of his staff to rest on the ground he fiddled with the bundle. "I'm Ryō no Eiji." he began, stopping to think about it. "Of Kika Island!" He liked the way she did it better. Sounded more official. "Nice to meet you, Azarea." The red-haired woman asked if he was lost and he reluctantly nodded. "Yeah... my uncle'd probably punch me through a tree or throw me off a cliff or somethin' if he knew, too." What sounded like a joke was stated with an expression of genuine worry. Yama would have definitely made him pay for this.

Konoha was mentioned and his eyes soon lit up. "Well, I'm kinda on my own... but my mom's from there." Some more fiddling with his bundle and it was all tied back on properly. "I should probably go see her." the boy thought aloud before shrugging. Outside of Kika Island was a lot bigger than it looked on the map. There was a ton to do! He looked towards Azarea once more before glancing at his still unfurled map. "Kumogakure's in..." a second later and he found it. "The Land of Lightning, right. What's that place like?" His eyes shifted between her and the map, squinting a bit closer at some of the landmarks. Who knew? Maybe he'd go there?

"You should probably wash off in the water then to get the salt off or it'll drive you half mad with itching." Azarea suggests with a quirk of a smile nodding towards the river. South of Konoha it was still warm enough for a short dip even in these winter months though the water was nippy. "You can warm up by my fire for a bit after if you'd like. I'm not breaking camp for a while yet." She adds spotting no headband on the boy and at his exclamation over her being a ninja she realizes he must be a wanderer with some training. Probably learned from his mother if she was from Konoha.

"A pleasure to meet you Eiji-san and yes I am a Ninja. If you'd like I can escort you to Konoha though without the right paperwork you'll probably need to request your Mother come tot he gate to ID you so you can get inside. Not everyone can just walk into a hidden village." She advises pulling her clothes from the water as she lays them out on the large flat rock to dry for the moment. Only taking her boots and grabbing a few hot rocks from beside the fire to stick inside them to dry as she sets them a little way back from the flame. her expression going wistful and fond at the mention of her homeland.

"Kaminari no Kuni is beautiful. Filled with mountains and deep valleys and towering forests. We get all the seasons there unlike Hi no Kuni which typically just has the wet and dry season. It's winter there now so most of the mountain peaks are covered in snow and it can get very cold. In spring we have lots of storms and lightning hence the name." Azarea offers a little tidbit about her homeland.

"Were you hoping to become a Ninja too?" She questions with a tilt of her head.

After nodding the boy set his staff down and began to strip.

It seemed as if he didn't need much convincing to undress. And he certainly wasn't shy about it. "Good idea." was all he said as he removed his orange yukata and yellow sash. A pair of white boxers was all he had on by the end of it. It was clear from his physique that he exercised pretty regularly though he was rather lean. Eiji crouched down to undo his bundle and then, still carrying all of his garments ran forward and cannonballed into the flowing river. Not a second later his head broke the water's surface, his mess of curls doing very little to hide a pained expression. "Ow!" Air whistled between his teeth in a hiss. "Thought it was deeper for some reason..." Much like a wild animal he shook his head flinging water everywhere.

The water felt nice even for this time of year. Eiji bobbed in the river as he listened to the woman's words, placing his clothes and blanket in the shallows to wash. "Paperwork?" he echoed the word with an exasperated sigh. He didn't have that! But getting his mother to meet him shouldn't have been too much trouble. A sly smile took hold on his face upon hearing that she was indeed a ninja. "Know any cool jutsu?" He'd learned a few tricks over the years but she seemed more experienced than himself. The boy's eyes looked the woman up and down as she tended to her boots. Ever admiring.

As she spoke of her homeland his eyes lit up, eventually standing out of excitement. "That sounds awesome!" His eyes drifted up, clearly fantasizing about some adventure or another. That did it. He was definitely visiting the Land of Lightning. "I used to live on a mountain but it was pretty small." So far the Lands of Fire and Tea both had been very different from his home. But Azarea's home sounded like something out of a fairy tale! She asked if he wanted to be a ninja and Eiji merely placed a hand on his hip, tilting his head back and forth in thought. "Nah!" he said, cracking another smile. "Ninja get told what to do all the time... plus they gotta deal with boring stuff." A finger came up to rub under his nose. "Like checking paperwork." He may not have had the benefits provided to shinobi, but he did as he pleased. Ultimately that was most important to him above all. "I want somethin' else." he said, punching his hand and grinning.

Tricks Of The Trade

"Well I can't argue with that," Azarea quips as Eiji mentions he wants something more to life then the trials many shinobi faced. For all the paycheck was nice no one really liked being told what to do. Though there was safety in numbers. Feeling the boys eyes on her from where he paddled in the water she grinned and shrugged. Then as if to answer his question of if she knew any cool jutsu she channeled chakra to the soles of her feet... and stepped out atop the raging river water with nary a ripple.

"I know a few tricks." She admits with a lopsided smile as she forms a few seals glances down and with a crack of pressurized air spits a bullet made of chakra into the water. The jutsu cutting right through a fish as it floated tot he surface leaving the Kumo shinobi to pick it up. "And looks like I've got you a meal." Azarea jokes moving back towards the shore to gut and prep the thing suspecting once her guest got out of the cold water he'd be feeling the hunger pangs. Cold always made one hungrier in her experience. Especially for hot food.

"I don't mind teaching you a trick or two. Just pay me back down the line should I ever need to learn something in turn if you'd like." She offers spearing the fish to roast beside the fire as she rinsed her hands and moved to hang her clothes up on a branch nearer the flame to speed up their drying. Not trusting the slow dip of the sun to fully remove their dampness before night fell.

A mischievous, "Hehehe...~" sounded out on seeing her grin.

Eiji liked what he liked. Which was well... everything. In spite of his greed he did seem to have good taste though. Azarea said that she couldn't argue with his statement about ninja and he nodded before playfully planking backwards in the river to float. "What made you want to be a ninja?" he asked, his eyes still watching the woman as she approached the riverbank and walked out onto the water's surface like it was nothing. "Woah..." Amazement sounded out. Whether it was because of the act itself or the up-close view he got of her was entirely unclear. Next she inhaled and shot out a sharp ball of wind that sliced a fish dead and splashed some water in his face. He lowered his mouth into the river, rising to in turn shoot several water bullets in front of him.... sadly these were not chakra-infused and just plopped back into the stream.

The woman offered to teach him something in return for him doing the same later and he nodded. "Sure!" Teaching was something he never tried... but it couldn't have been that hard if his drunken lech of an uncle could do it. He stood in the river once more and folded his arms while his eyes drifted upward. What to learn? "Got some Fire Release jutsu?" A few snaps of his fingers occurred but despite pouring chakra into his hands only small sparks were produced. Probably due to moisture. If she didn't he'd scratch his head and shrug. "Or that water walking thing." It was sort of incredible really. He could shoot fire from his mouth and wreath his limbs in great blazes but something simple like walking up surfaces or standing on water he could not. It was true he did have miserable control and a particularly unstable brand of chakra so that probably didn't help. Just another oddity in his list of quirks.

Mercy

Azarea blinks at the question of why she wanted to be a shinobi the inquiry catching her off guard. "Truthfully there wasn't really another option when I was a kid. All of my family were shinobi so I would be one too." She explains returning to the water side now that she had gotten his food cooking. The woman settling down on the large flat rock from before as she swung her feet back and forth channeling chakra to the soles to cause them to slap against the water surface rather then splash into the current.

"But I stayed a shinobi to repay the people who took me in and to use my skills to protect them," Azarea admits with a wry smile. It would have been easy to have just become another civilian in Kumogakure or to have faded into the background and remained a paper ninja, but the village hidden in the clouds had taken her in and cared for her when no one else would and she knew if she applied herself she had the skills and capabilities to do more for them. To not repay their mercy and kindness wasn't something she could bare.

"I'm afraid I haven't mastered katon yet." She admits bringing her own fingers up and concentrating. The most she got was a bit of smoke when she snapped them. Nothing that could be used in combat just yet. "But I can teach you water walking if you'd like. Come have a seat next to me and I'll show you the basics." Azarea offers patting the spot beside her on the rock

As he listened his expression turned to one of attentive curiosity. Eiji may have seemed a little goofy but there were depths behind those large eyes of his.

Azarea spoke of following in her family's footsteps. "You didn't even get a choice?" he asked, gaze moving downward as thoughts of his family bubbled up within his mind. "Mom wanted me to be shinobi like her... but my dad convinced her to let me make that decision." He was half responding, half thinking aloud. A puzzled look took hold on his face as he returned his eyes to the woman. "Guess I kinda take that for granted." Freedom was the thing he valued most... but he'd never even considered that others may not even have that same luxury.

Eiji listened as she continued on stating that she used her abilities to guard the ones whom she loved. If she looked to him she would see him standing hands on hips, curls half slicked overtop his head in wild fashion with a warm smile on face. "That's a great reason." Truly he admired her resolve. It was much more close to home than the selfish whims that drove him. Grandiose that it was, his goal was more abstract. Less focused maybe. It fueled him all the same. Azarea agreed to teach him water walking and he fist-pumped. "Osu!" Before she had even patted the rock he ran forward and plopped himself down next to her. Clearly he didn't need much convincing to get close. "What's first?" he asked with a grin, clapping his hands together to form a Tora hand seal.

Excited didn't even begin to describe him at that moment.

Weeds To A Garden

"A long time ago I used to belong to a shinobi clan and in clans one must make themselves useful." Azarea explains as she reaches into the water lifting a handful as she let's it run through her fingers her gaze contemplative, "Then one day my use to them ran out."

"Now I still belong to them, but am not one of them. I belong to them as a weed belongs to a garden. An unwanted specimen that exists at the whims of the gardener and just as easily pulled out by the roots should I be noticed or spread." She admits with a mirthless laugh and a shake of her head before she turns a smile on the boy and gestures to the river.

"Rest your feet on the surface of the water. Feel the current brushing against your skin, the vibration of the water molecules and the resistance of the surface against you." Azarea carefully instructs. "Then slowly channel your chakra down to your soles. Imagine the chakra spreading out from the bottom of your feet like plates and spinning at the same speed as the water. You should feel the surface tension atop the water increase. Too much and the water will just splash everywhere. Too little and your feet slip in." She explains demonstrating as she once more hones her chakra with the water walking technique. Slapping the soles of her feet atop the surface like a seal against a dock. The river as sold to her as a wooden walkway.

Eiji stared, his wide grin faltering slightly as the woman spoke of her past.

It seemed they shared some troubles with shinobi clans. It was clear that this was a personal subject but... he was glad she chose to share. After a nod he puffed up a cheek and spoke. "Yeah... my mom's an Akimichi. I guess they didn't like me when I was a baby since my dad's not from the village." He laid his palms flat on the rock beneath him as he dangled his legs in the stream. Unlike Azarea's more refined contemplation though his brow quickly furrowed. "But screw 'em! Those lousy gardeners from your clan too." It was more of a youthful outburst than true rage, made apparent by his grin returning as he stared at the woman once more. "They don't know what they missed out on... because you're no weed." He paused, closing his eyes. "You're a flower." An earnest compliment. Suddenly the realization hit him, and after opening his eyes to look at her he slapped his own forehead and broke out into laughter. "Wait— hehe, your name!~" The boy giggled to himself. "I didn't realize." It really was fitting. A red beauty named for a striking red flower.

Cute moments aside, Eiji quickly composed himself and punched his fist in readiness once she began her instruction. "Osu!" Again said with a nod, raising his feet to touch the water's surface. He listened to the woman's words, forming the Tora hand seal once more to help him focus his chakra. She did a good job explaining the mechanics behind it and after a moment of thought he started. "Spinning plates, got it." Eiji breathed deeply and began to funnel chakra to his feet. For a moment there was a faint blue glow and then... woosh!

Water splashed everywhere as energy poured like a torrent from his soles. "Too much, too much!" Quick as it had come it dispersed, breathing a sigh of relief. An eyebrow arched in confusion but he was no quitter. Narrowing his eyes he tried again, this time hoping to control his chakra's flow. He had plenty to spare... but apparently it was very volatile.

Azarea chuckles as Eiji comes to the realization of the meaning of her name as she inclines her head, "You are not wrong and Azalea's are poisonous. I won't be so easily pulled or eaten by anyone even less my former clan." She agrees with a toothy grin the earlier dourness fading somewhat. "But I am sorry to hear about your family. The clans of Konoha can be a bit exclusive I've heard." The red head murmurs as she watches her would be student work with a smile. Her arms quickly coming up to shield her face as Eiji splattered them both in water. Thankfully neither of them were exactly dry to begin with and she'd thankfully moved her clothes closer to the fire. Otherwise they'd both be huddling by the fire come night in nothing, but their britches.

"Not a bad start. Try and channel in the smallest amount you can. It's ok if your feet go in the water. It's easier to start small and work your way up." She instructs and then demonstrates as she lowers her own chakra output as her feet slip slightly into the water like it's jelly rather then liquid before she solidifies her control once more resulting in her pushing her foot back out of the water.

"And once you get really good at it you can use water sort of like a trampoline to bounce on. It's a lot of fun." Azarea adds hoping the prospect of such a enjoyable activity would only further encourage rather then discourage Eiji if he found himself struggling overly so.

Joō no Taikanshiki no Regaria [Queen's Coronation Regalia]
A mutated variant of the Aburame clans Yūdai no Omorejō ["Bewildering Grandeur of the Alpha"] resulting from the subsequent poisoning of Azarea's former Yūdai no Omorejō hive to prevent potential hijutsu theft. While the Joō no Taikanshiki no Regaria lacks the Yūdai no Omorejō size instead Azarea's hive has maintained the ability to produce alpha pheromones and commanding vibrations. Evolving instead to hyperspecialize in these two aspects allowing them to produce pheramones and vibrations strong enough to be detected by human hearing and sense of smell.

Reigning Chakra Control
Fine tuning her chakra control to a razor's edge Azarea is capable of performing delicate techniques with minimal to no wastage of chakra. Allowing her to conserve her reserves in prolonged combat and managed more finickity techniques and jutsu.

Kagura Mind's Eye
Born with a natural affinity towards sensing chakra like her Father before her Azarea has trained herself to become a capable sensory shinobi. The boy's head nodded up and down in agreement upon hearing her words.

"That's right, you show 'em." It was a subject he obviously felt strongly about, and it didn't take much for Eiji to consider someone a friend. Azarea had been nothing but kind to him so far... so he already couldn't stand whoever this clan was that treated her so badly! "What clan are you from?" He asked, realizing that she had not named them. Maybe it was a secret and if not he wouldn't pry. But his natural curiosity was on full display. She seemed to sympathize and said sorry about his family to which he shrugged. "No family of mine, except Ma. People let relatives walk all over them... I say you get to choose who your real family is." His smile had not abated and he nodded as if to emphasize his point. He had his mom, Yama, Sora, even his grandpa probably still out with his turtles. His father too, wherever he was. He had no need for a clan who didn't want him... even if they had softened to him recently.

Listening to her instruction Eiji pumped his arms and gave it another go. "Start small..." He repeated, his grin turning into a focused frown. 'Control' was the last word that came to mind where he was concerned. But he had to do his best. "Hmmm..." A hum of concentration sounded as his feet rested just above the water. Chakra slowly began to travel to his soles, as small an amount as he could manage. Images of spinning plates played in his mind as he closed his eyes and focused. If she glanced over she would notice his clenched canines start to elongate. Thin, near invisible wisps of fuschia began to streak his naturally blue chakra. "Come on... come on..." It seemed the more he drew out his energy and the more frustration built changes began to occur. If she had sensory capabilities she would also feel an unease. Like his chakra wasn't quite human...

Having faith in the woman's words he leaned forward to take a step off the rock and sank... but instead of falling into the stream he slowly began to rise back up to the water's surface. "I did it!" Amazed, he opened his eyes and looked down. His grin now significantly more toothy. "I did-" Before he could say it again he took another step, wobbled, and plunged face-first into the waters. Bubbles rose to the surface where he fell... and after several moments he burst up from underwater swinging uselessly at the river with his fists. "Damn it!" A menacing scowl had replaced his smile. His fingertips had also turned a darker color, near black with a reddish hue. Chakra intermingled with that same red-pink color wafted off of him emanating from his feet. Not much, just thin vapors barely perceptible to the eye rising above the water. A change had indeed occurred... and it seemed like he was oblivious to it.
