LATER

The woman showed no resistance to his advances, and a kiss that started more softly and delicate, quickly grew more passionate, with their lips firmly pressed against one another, their tongues dancing together, and a nibble or two to her lower lip, as he felt the electrifying sensation running down his spine. He was infatuated with her, that was made clear when instead of picking up Kanesada from the corner of the room, he chose to hear her story, try to understand why she had defected, and to see if there was any potential solution.

But the sole fact that he acted this way meant that something had changed inside of him, and while he wasn't quite sure what was happening, he decided that the best way to find that out was to continue to explore that feeling, that odd behaviour he was displaying. It was all very new to him, but he was enjoying the journey, even if he didn't fully understand it.

After their kiss, they pulled away enough so that they could once again gaze into each other's eyes, and he could see the confusion in her golden orbs. "Listen..." he started, pausing as he took a deep breath. "We will need to talk this through at some point... But right now... That is not what I want to do." he admitted. "I don't want you to be scared. I will not harm you, far from it. I believe what you said, I will help you make things right, once we figure out what that may be... But again, I don't want to do that right now..." he reiterated.

She clung to every syllable he made, his voice so soft and reassuring. It didn't matter to her anymore whether he spoke the truth, even though she knew deep inside she prayed to the unknown gods that he was speaking nothing but the truth. She nodded her head, understanding that the fact he said they would explore a possible solution later was more than enough for her now. Shiina still had a head attached to her neck, after all. And more importantly, she had this man in her arms that was willing to give her that chance for her head to remain attached. "Mhm..." she let out a noise of affirmation.

This time she would be much more direct and forward, the pent up frustrations for her village and its people pushed to the back of her head. She threw her arms around the back of Toshizou's neck, and allowed them to explore his back, a dejavu moment for the white-haired man, she was certain. She brought face close to his, so that there were only mere centimeters between them as she kissed him first on the nose playfully, brushing her own cheek against his as she went to kiss his cheek, his ear and his neck. She was very gentle, possible the gentlest she had ever been, as though he was made out of glass. But that was how she displayed love, care and passion. She brought her lips close to his ear, the same sweet voice that had captivated him once, would resurface. "I think..." she kissed the part in between his neck and ear, the part that some men and women alike would find quite sensitive "...that I like you a lot..."

Shiina didn't dwell on the words she spoke, but allowed her actions to speak volumes. Undressing him of his shirt, she pulled away from him to allow his arms to be free of the garment, exposing his muscular body in broad daylight once more. With a sly smile, she hooked a finger to one of the belt holes on his pants, pulling him towards the hot springs room. "Let's finish what we couldn't yesterday..." This was who she truly was, who she had wanted to be for years but had been deprived. Pulling Toshizou into the hot springs room, she would allow her finger and subsequent hand to wander and explore his abdomen before pushing him against the wall, the sound of the running hot springs engulfing their senses.

They were in their own little world now, a world where there was no village, no hatred and no people other than them.

And she hoped to keep it that way.

OUR WORLD

Shiina threw her arms around his neck, exploring his back and he enjoyed her touched as he made it clear as a subtle smile formed on his feature, their faces inching close to one another, and when she kissed him on the nose, the smile widened a bit, and then she proceed to kiss his cheek, his ear, his neck, all very gently, in a way he was definitely not really used to. Toshizou didn't do emotions well, or this degree of emotional intimacy, but somehow, he his walls were slowly coming down, and even though it didn't make much sense, he decided he would try not to overthink it. "Must be that stupid therapy..." he thought to himself, but if he was upset with that, well... That faded when she whispered on his ear, saying that she believed she liked him a lot. "I can see that... I'm enjoy this myself..." and that was the closest anyone ever got from hearing something sentimental from him.

The Hatake had been emotionally closed up his whole life, and it was still far to early for him to let down all his walls, but still, he was there, mesmerized by her presence, wanting to be nowhere else at this moment. His shirt was easily pulled away, exposing his pale physic. He liked her sly smile, and when she reached for his belt, pulling him towards the hot spring room, he nodded and followed, but his hand grabbed her towel, seeking to unwrap it, freeing her body from its coverage. "You won't be needing that there..." he teased her, and when they got into the room and she pushed him against the wall, he would wrap his arms around her waist, pressing her body against his, as he went for a passionate kiss.

He wanted her, badly, and right now this little pocket of the world was theirs and theirs alone.

Shiina believed what she was hearing, especially from a man like Hatake Toshizou. She smiled and blushed, knowing that she had overstepped her own personal boundaries, with emotions. She too was not an emotion being, having rid herself from it a long time ago. The woman entertained this new feeling she now had for the man in her arms, and knew for a fact that she was going to exploit all that he and her feelings had to offer. Although he didn't confirm that he harbored the same feelings for her, at least he didn't deny it, taking the chance to allow his hand to reach the hem of her towel, the one which bound her body tightly, Shiina didn't say anything and merely nodded at his comment about not needing it.

And like a dancer on their own personal dance floor, she allowed the man to pull at the towel, her body spinning in small circles as she gracefully unwound from the towel herself. She was a practiced dancer by profession and so it was not very hard for her to spin consecutively this way although not for that particular purpose. She hoped Toshizou would be there following her movements, so his arms could catch her once the towel was free from her body. It was all very aesthetically pleasing, for she was a geisha, and almost everything she did symbolized grace and beauty.

As they pressed against the wall, his arms now around her waist, she could and would no longer deny the fact that the passion, driven primarily by love, would consume her. Shiina let her arm travel from his back towards his head, pulling gently at the back of his neck before ultimately reaching his hair, grabbing onto strands of it gently. Using the other arm to balance herself, she pushed against the wall, as to ricochet them both off of it, like a diver would push off the ledge in a race, wrapping the arm she used to push off the wall and wrapping it around his body tightly. She would take him to her own dance floor, spinning them both in circles until they got to the hot springs room. She would release from the passionate kiss enough to look at him with loving eyes.

"Let's reach for the stars..." she whispered in his ear.

BEYOND THE STARS

Her movements were gracious, as expected from a performer of the finest arts. Still, he was enchanted by it. Well... To be fair, he was mesmerized by the woman almost completely. From her gorgeous look, with so many incredible contrasts: the tanned skin, the purple hair, the golden eyes, to her sweet and caring, yet somewhat sassy personality, to the way she moved. And their chemistry was completely undeniable, electrifying, and extremely addicting to the man, and he had slept around quite a lot in his life. There was just something different about her, and he had only felt something similar once before in his life, and it never amount to anything, so in its own way, the short amount of time he had spent with Shiina was quite real.

While immersed on their passionate kiss, they ricochet against the wall, in an improvised dance as they made their way to the hot spring room, spinning around in circles, until they released their lips from their touch so they could stare at each other in the eyes, where scarlet and gold intertwined once again. Her words were met with a light chuckle from the man, who shook his head. "We are there already... Let's go beyond!" he whispered back on her ear, reaching forward a bit more so he could nibble her earlobe lightly, before moving on to her neck, kissing, nibbling it, making sure she knew that at this moment, they belonged to one another.

And free of the constraints of the rest of his clothing, which he removed with one of his hands while the other kept itself wrapped around her waist, their bodies were free to touch one another completely, and they could now once again enjoy that hot spring. Time seemed to have stopped in his mind, as nothing else seemed to matter right now, but their moment together.

And they would share more than just that moment together.

Of course, that moment was one of the most special, as two people became one, their bodies and souls intertwined. Between the passionate kisses and the singing of praises to one another, they enjoyed every second. Shiina gave him all of her, and she would assume that Toshizou returned the favor. There were multiple times throughout that moment she wished for time to stop, for the feelings he gave her to last forever. And each time it came and went, she would want more, and it would seem that she was no longer who she had been before she met him. Not a bad thing entirely, but one that made her question how someone could make her see and feel the way she did.

For the next few days, the two would explore every corner of the ryokan room. What was originally just a one night stay turned into three, and then turned into a week. Each day and night they woke up and went to sleep in each other's arms, with the occasional consumptions of food in-between. On the morning of the eighth day together, Shiina would open her eyes to the bright sun's rays shining through the window, all too accustomed to seeing Toshizou's sleeping face next to hers. She moved a hand to touch his face but stopped, inches before her fingers touched his cheek.

The days and nights had been like a dream, and she was not ready to wake up from it.

But all things, good or bad, would come to an end. She knew that they couldn't stay at the ryokan forever, and there was still so many unanswered questions. The woman couldn't bear to think about not seeing and not being with Toshizou, the bond they had created in the last couple of days impossible to just let go. But she was a reputable woman and so if he wanted to cut ties with her, as he would if she were just a fling, she would let him go silently, without a fight nor words exchanged. But if not, there was much more than needed to be unpacked, that their feelings alone couldn't possibly cover.

Hopefully he was ready for that conversation...

WAKING UP FROM A DREAM

Time passed by so quickly it might as well just be flying by. What was supposed to be just a one day stay at the Ryokan continuously extended until they were there for a little over a week. And during this time, the two of them continue to share the heat of their passion, spending a lot of time together, in between their room, the hot spring, and walking around the vicinities of the Ryokan, enjoying the more mild winter days they seemed to have been blessed with. He was enjoying her company a lot, in a way that was almost completely alien to him. And while they had agreed not to talk about the more serious issues for a while, during these days it felt like he was almost too distracted to even bother bringing it up, and when he stop to think about it, he got concerned, feeling a weird knot inside his throat, which would fade away enough whenever he saw the woman's smile.

On this last night, however, he had some stress dreams, probably due to the emotions and thoughts he had been repressing during these days, in order to continue to live an illusion of a life without responsibilities or consequences. He had never done anything like that before, with anyone, so when he woke up that morning, he looked a little stunned, as if he was trying to confirm if this was just another dream, of if he had finally return to the real world. His scarlet eyes were quick to pick up the figure of the woman, her fingers close to his cheek, but not quite there, almost as if she had frozen. "May be on her mind as well..." he thought to himself as he sit up on the bed, running his hand on his face and taking a deep breath.

"Shiina... We need to hop of the dream and talk. It has been enough time." his tone was way more serious than it had been the past week, his gaze staring through the window near the table.

It was only her luck that he indeed felt the need to have the conversation both parties seemed to have pushed away for longer than intended. Shiina let out a small sigh as she nodded at his words, retracting her hand slowly from mid-air, having not touched his cheek. He was right; they had spent so much time together, so many glorious hours in each other's company that it didn't make sense for them to keep running away from what was bound to come. Feeling him sit up, the woman would do the same, grabbing her yukata she had casually tossed on the ground the night prior, in amidst the passionate kisses and whatnot. Her expression turned into a serious one as well, matching Toshizou's.

"I suppose we should..."

Her words though soft, carried a very different tone as well. Shiina stood up, tying her yukata with her obi sash, found hanging from the back of a chair. She walked to the window, standing with her back to him, the same way she had done when she had told him about her real identity. She couldn't fathom what was going to happen, but there was nothing she could do to further delay it any longer. "Toshi...Hatake-san..." she quickly corrected herself, her gaze unwavering as she stared at nothingness out the window. "In my current predicament, do you think there really is a solution...?" She hadn't explored many solutions herself, merely been on the run for the years she had left the village. "Nothing I've done can be turned back, nor would I under my own principles..."

She knew that she was merely stating obvious things now, but the woman had wanted to desperately break the silence. She wanted desperately to turn around to look at him, to stare into his wonderful face, but she knew that this would only cause her to becoe emotionally irrational. She couldn't afford to keep allowing her feelings getting in the way of what was important, despite her heart and mind wanting nothing but that.

SOLUTION

Toshizou would get up, collecting his pants and shirt from the floor, and quickly dressing up so that they could have this conversation without being distracted by each other's body and their own urges. Once he was dressed, he would walk to the table and sit in one of the chairs, pointing at the other one so that they could talk while looking at each other, for the conversation would be rather dense. When she addressed him, she went on by the caring nickname, before correcting herself to become more formal, and that now felt a bit wrong. He preferred when she called him simply 'Toshi', but he didn't say anything.

Shiina wondered if there was any solution to her predicament, mentioning that she would not turn back what she did, because not only it wasn't possible, but it would also hurt her own principles, and he respected that. "I believe there is a solution. And that solution is to negotiate a return to the Hidden Cloud Village." he said in a firm tone, full of conviction. It must have sounded like a bold statement, but he was assessing this from a pragmatic point of view, and also from his own experience. "The plague was a dark moment in your country's history. Many bad things happened, many people defected. But more than that... Things are changing now. The Cloud has a new Kage, who happens to be a friend of mine and..." he paused, grabbing a small book from his back pouch, a book that she would immediately recognize: a Bing Book.

Toshizou would open it on the page with her information, which was a little out of date, yes, but it showed her picture, her name, and her rank. "You are a Jounin. They could use your strength. The Land of Lightning is working hard to recover, to improve. You are a good person, Shiina. You were set up. I interrogated you and... Well... People can't lie to me. I can read their emotions due to a technique that I know." the Mind's Eye of the Kagura was indeed a fearsome technique, and extremely useful. "It won't be simple, and I assume they will want to test if you are being genuine, which usually involves missions... Dangerous ones... But, it is a way." he added, looking at her to see how she would react to his words.

The woman would turn her body at the words he spoke, silently listening while her mind was busy at work. There was a new Raikage and they could pardon her? Was that even possible? Or more so...could she explain herself in a way that the could be believable for this new Kage? It had been her word against the entire village once upon a time and so she was plenty skeptical, for good reason. The woman didn't voice any of these concerns, knowing that Toshizou was correct in saying that it wasn't going to be an easy task.

When he pulled out a Bingo Book. her eyes widened a fraction. Of course, she wasn't THAT surprised, perhaps, seeing that he was a powerful shinobi. And he had mentioned some time ago that he had killed many in his day. This meant that he had plenty of exposure to neukenin, which meant that it would be logical for him to have one. Shiina saw her own picture in the book, nodding her head slowly. Indeed, she was a Jounin and she could be beneficial to the village if she returned. The only question was whether it was going to work. The woman heaved a small sigh, trying to find the right words.

"Do you think...do you think this new Kage would believe me?" She didn't want a repeat of history, a repeat that led her to be forced to live a different life. The woman then allowed her eyes to travel from the book to Toshizou, looking at him with a look that implied her true feelings; one of sorrow and anger. She wasn't angry at him but at the predicament that she had found herself in because some council member had decided she was too much of a threat. "And more importantly...what should I do?" It was very rare for Shiina to be asking such questions, implying that she was asking for help. She had built her character to be one who could hold her own ground and yet, now at this precise moment, all the years of building had shattered before her eyes.

She was lost...and a little afraid...

NEGOTIATIONS

He could feel the anger and sorrow penting up inside of her, but could he blame her for that? Absolutely not. There was nothing worse than being set up, and be forced to choose between your life, or your country. Many would choose the former, and that was something that Toshizou from the past would condemn, but especially after getting his eldest daughter back in his life, someone who had been set up by her own clan, and almost executed, he had come to realize the world wasn't really black and white, and meeting Shiina just further confirmed that. She wondered if the new Kage would believe her and Toshizou nodded. "Kizumi is a reasonable person. A good leader. One that wants to restore the Cloud to its former glory. And she is a close friend of mine."[ he explained, hoping that the final part would help ease her concerns.

Shiina was trusting him, making herself vulnerable, asking what she should do, and he valued those things, especially coming from her, the woman he had grown to care for very deeply. He could sense that she was afraid, lost even, and that prompted him to get up from the chair and walk towards her, his hand reaching for her own, lacing his fingers and holding it firmly yet gently. "Come with me to the Land of Fire. You can stay on my country home, while I reach out to Kizumi, so we can start this negotiation." he started. "I will help however I can, and you will be under the protection of my man. They are loyal to me alone." he explained with a firm nod.

If the Cloud added Shiina back to their forces, that would be a decent boost to their military power, according to the information he had on his Bingo Book, something their alliance needed, especially as the Mist and Rock grew stronger, and bolder.

All the resolve she had shattered the moment he stood up and took her hands in his. Her eyes widened a fraction, searching his face. It was without a doubt that he cared about her deeply, and she him. "T-Thank you...Toshi..." her voice cracked a little, silent tears cascaded down her face. It had been a long time since she had genuinely cried in front of anyone, and all it took was one man to bring out all of her weaknesses. She was like an open book, such vulnerability unparalleled. There had been hesitation to show him this side of her, the true woman inside. She had fought with herself aggressively, caught between whether to trust him or not. And she chose to trust him, chose to allow her feelings to rule over her head.

And she hoped that she made the right choice.

The young woman casually brought her other hand up to her face to wipe the remnants of tears. "I-I'm sorry...I must look like a mess..." Even the way she was speaking had become more casual, dropping all need to choose words carefully anymore around the man. She would move closer to him, inching closer to rest her head gently on his shoulder, her eyes cast down to the ground as she cried. Of course she didn't wail or scream, her shoulders moved slightly as every part of her body became consumed with sadness. If she was going to cry, she would go all out and never cry again.

Or at least she hoped not.

The two would stand there for quite some time, him standing still with one hand intertwined with hers and her using his shoulder as a means to hide her inability to control her tears. She never felt safe before, as safe as she did right then and there. It was no longer about the passion, growing to harbor deeper feelings for him beyond that of infatuation. As they had spent the last few days together, she had already understood this about herself. A woman who never fell for anyone had to admit that she had fallen for this man, and would do anything to protect that feeling.

Even at the cost of her life.

"A man who can't uphold his beliefs is pathetic, dead or alive."

BY YOUR SIDE

When she thanked him with a cracked voice and tears running down his face, he shook his head while his free hand moved to her face, gently wiping the tears which insisted on rolling down. "It is only fair." his tone remained calm and collected, but there was care there, even if hidden beneath his serenity. He needed to show her things were fine, that he could keep them under control. When she claimed to look like a mess, he chuckled softly and shook his head once again. "A mess? If a mess looked like you, this world would be a sight to behold. You have been through a lot, it is easy to feel like there's not hope." he said, noticing she moving closer until she rested her hand on his shoulder.

With the hand he previously used to wipe some of her tear, he would touch the back of her head, stroking her hair with the tips of his fingers. "Let it all out. Because after today, we need to keep those tears at bay. We need to show strength. But here, just the two of us, it is okay. I'm here with you." he tried to reassure her that he was going to be on her corner, but also remind her that they were shinobi, and they couldn't display weakness to others.

The two stood there for quite a while, hands laced together as he continued to offer his shoulder so that she could cry as much as she needed to. He was going to protect her, make sure her honour as a shinobi was restored, and that she could rejoin her nation. And with that, perhaps something could come of them... And when that thought crossed his mind, he felt his body tensing up a bit. Was he really considering settling down? As alien as that thought used to be before... Somehow, it was more enticing.

In the city of fools, I was careful and cool but they tore me apart like a hurricane.

NOTES -
And while time seemed to stand still for the two of them, she would continue to cry, her head resting on his shoulder. What he said was correct, she knew that internally. There was no room for weakness in the shinobi world, the mere hint of it being let out could cost a person their life. But she allowed herself, just this once, to show Toshizou that she too had a weak side to her, that despite the cold and collected exterior she often showed to others, there was something more...human inside. The woman nodded her head, before finally lifting her head from his shoulder, her face still tear-stained. At least the tears themselves would cease, her eyes searched his. There was so much inconsistencies he displayed in the way he spoke and moved.

But then again...so did she.

The woman could feel his body tense at something, but decided to disregard it at that moment. She was concerned about the man, but she knew that their relationship had not yet been defined to the point where she could display such concern, at least not yet. "Thank you, being here for me is all that I can ever ask..." she continued to think about the solution that he had proposed earlier. "What do you reckon we should do next? Of course, we need to get out of here. I've never been to the Land of Fire, so you will have to lead the way..." She would take a moment just to appreciate his face, his voice, his warmth before allowing her eyes to travel to around the room. They had kept the room clean and part of her felt still a little bit depressed that they would have to leave this little place behind.

Now was not the time to explore their personal feelings for one another, even though she desperately wanted to. There were much more important things in jeopardy, and whether she could and would return to Kaminari no Kuni as a shinobi successfully relied on the fact that she kept a level head.

"more than infatuation, not quite love".
"A man who can't uphold his beliefs is pathetic, dead or alive."

CHANGE

Shiina would ask him what they should be doing next, and while she admitted they needed to leave the Ryokan, she also pointed out that she had never been to the Land of Fire, and that he would be the one leading the way. "Of course. I will have measures prepared for our arrival. My country house is to the southeast of the country, not too close to the Hidden Village, and still far enough from the Land of Lightning. It will be safe while we start negotiations." he said with a calm tone. "Once we are there, I won't be able to stay in the place at all times. I have many duties within the village, and with the current Chuunin Exams. But I will make sure to always have some of my men in the area. Like I said, they follow my orders alone." even within prestige positions within shinobi villages, not many shinobi could claim to have men loyal to them alone, which pointed out to Toshizou's special position, or level of influence.

He would then look around to the room, and a hint of sadness would cross the scarlet orbs of his. Leaving would be a bit sad, as they were sent back into the real world, to shoulder the burden of their responsibilities. But if everything worked out, her life would be back on the proper track, no more running and hiding, and her village and their alliance would grow strong. And that would mean that whatever this thing they had going on between them would have a realistic chance to flourish, even though the thought still sounded a bit foreign to him.

But the fact that it was a thought nonetheless was a real evidence that the man was indeed changing.

"You can train a dog with food. You can buy a person with money. But there isn't a man alive that can put down the Will of Fire. Some things will never change. The Will of Fire will never be extinguished"
