For a year, he had tirelessly pursued the missing-nin, honing his skills and mastering his long-term spore technique until he was able to take down the prominent criminal. The missing-nin's body was sealed into a scroll and delivered to their superiors by another hunter-nin, leaving him alone in the wild to rest.

Sitting near a crackling fire, he savored the taste of a few cooked potatoes - a simple yet satisfying meal after months of surviving in the wild. But even as he ate, his thoughts drifted to his sister, who was waiting for him in the village. She was the one who kept him going, her face and unwavering support driving him forward through the darkest of times. Then he fell asleep with the bonfire still actively burning.

A few days ago, the morning at the Gurē residence began like any other. Customers arrived, An assisted them, and everyone went about their business. However, something unexpected happened when a letter arrived for them. The letter was carefully placed in a good envelope, addressed to the Gurē residence, with the name "Shō" written next to it in smaller letters. Shō, the eldest grandchild and An's elder brother, had been absent from Kirigakure for about a year. Surprisingly, the letter was initially sent to their old address but was later brought to their new address by some old neighbors.

An realized that Shō had no idea they had moved because he had mentioned that communication would be difficult and he would be gone for a long time. They couldn't exchange letters during his absence. The letter itself was straightforward, mentioning that Shō would be returning to the community in a few days. The family decided to leave a note with their new address and a request for the neighbors to notify Shō if anything happened to the note.

An, excited about Shō's return, took the small piece of paper and decided to deliver the note herself while talking to the neighbors. She hummed with excitement as she put on her shoes and headed toward their old address. Fortunately, the older Gurē couple had a good reputation and had made friends with their neighbors over the years, so An had no trouble asking for this favor. Moreover, the neighbors adored the young child.

Passing through the village's main gate, he kept his head low and moved quickly, not wanting to attract any attention. Once he had passed the identification check, he made his way to the bustling business district, determined to find the perfect surprise gift for his sister.

Despite living in the same house, they hadn't spent much time together since An entered the academy three years ago. Shō had been promoted to the ranks of chuunin and embarked on a year-long mission. An understood the importance of his duty, especially at a time when many children had become orphans due to the civil war and the sanbi rampage. Her classmates at the academy served as a constant reminder of this reality.

The two helpers were busy preparing food, while the elderly woman supervised the two young children, ensuring the quality of the dishes. The elderly man relaxed and sipped his tea. "Why didn't you wake me up? I could have helped too!" An exclaimed with a hint of disappointment as she approached the pleasant scene.

It did not take much time for Shō to locate his new home. The estate was nothing short of magnificent, standing tall amidst lush greenery, nestled close to the river of Kirigakure. The structure itself was divided into two parts, with the main building situated on the left bank of the river while the secondary building on the right. The building would be connected by a bridge made of fine woods that glimmered in the sunlight. The serene and peaceful flow of the river would add tranquil ambiance to the surroundings.

As he made his way towards the main building, he walked across a magnificent stone pathway that branched from the village’s main route. His heart was filled with excitement and anticipation as he approached the entrance. He knew that his sister would be inside along with his grandparents, eagerly waiting for his return after a long year working outside the village.

As they waited in anticipation of the arrival of the young Gure boy, the two females engaged in conversation. It didn't take long for An to catch the sound of approaching footsteps near the front entrance. She counted in her head: one, two, three...

"ONII-CHAN, OKAERI!" An, dressed in a simple yet elegant white kimono with a light blue haori draped over it, reacted with lightning speed, leaping into her brother's arms with a beaming face. An and Shō had spent a significant amount of time apart, as Shō was sent to the Academy shortly after An's birth. However, he always made an effort to visit his little sister whenever he had the chance. As a result, their reunions were known to be quite dramatic, as the adults would playfully describe them.

Upon stepping into the building, Shō was immediately caught off guard by a young kid who lunged onto him with open arms. Upon closer inspection, she was none other than his sister, An! As a response to her hug, he would lift her up high, spinning her around. As she giggled and screamed, he could feel the weight of her body in his arms, a reminder of just how much she had grown since he last saw her. It wasn’t exactly that heavy but he could not help but grinned and teased her, "Look at you! You… have grown some weight, did ya?”

After playfully holding her in the air for a few seconds, he would finally put her down, ruffling her hair gently and apologising to her with the most insincere face and tone. "An! I’m sorry! Oh god, I promise I am not laughing at you!” In the end, he could not resist and burst into laughter. A simple joke indeed but that was a sense of warmth he had been craving since he was a child.

Subsequent to the brief chuckle, he cleared his throat, assumed a more serious demeanour before turning to his grandparents. "Baasan! Sorry for making you worry.” He said, bowing deeply in respect. Although she had previously advised An to let go of his brother, she and Shō would share a short but warm embrace. No words were spoken, but it was clear how much they both have missed each other.

The light-haired girl playfully pouted at her brother's statement, "Onii-chan!" knowing well that he was joking. Shō embraced his younger sister tightly before releasing her and placing her back on the floor, which An mimicked. Although An didn't want to let go of her big brother, she softly held his warm hand with her own.

The trio proceeded to the main tatami room on the first floor, which had been cleared of most of the tables typically present during business hours. Only one large, low-raised brown table with cushions remained, positioned near the open windows. They all removed their shoes before stepping onto the room's floor, following the customary tradition.

"You took your sweet time," remarked the elder with gray hair, his tone lacking any bitterness. An chuckled to herself, noting that Ojī-chan was a true tsundere. "Yes, dear," responded the old woman as she approached her husband's side.

"Onii-chan, let's sit here," An guided her elder brother to the opposite side of the elderly couple, where they sat together, still unwilling to release their grasp. "An," the grandma gently called out, prompting the young Gurē to understand immediately and let go of her brother's hand. The grandma distributed damp towels to everyone at the table to clean their hands, leaving the small girl momentarily separated from her brother's palm.

"So, how have you been, Shō?" the grandma inquired as she finished pouring the last bowl of miso soup from the nearby pot, waiting for the grandfather to begin his meal as a signal for everyone else to start. An devoted her undivided attention to her brother, almost as if she were scrutinizing him from head to toe, eager to see how much had changed since they last saw each other. "Mhm, I'm curious too, Onii-chan. Tell us about your experiences and where you've been," An expressed, yearning to hear stories from the outside world. Due to Kirigakure's policy on travel for aspiring shinobi, she hadn't been able to leave the village since joining the academy.

As Shō approached the dining table, the smell of delicious foods wafted through the air, making him much hungrier than before. As he looked at the table, he saw that it was filled with an array of dishes, including some of his favorites. A feeling of gratitude filled his heart and he muttered a quiet "Thanks baasan” under his breath. He then turned to his grandfather and gave a deep bow as a sign of respect before being escorted by his little sister to his seat.

"An, Onii-chan is not going away this time.” He chuckled as he pried her hand away from his. He couldn’t help but feel grateful for having such a cute little sister. His grandparents, as expected, inquired about his mission, but he was mindful of the fact that his little sister was present and didn’t want to worry her. He simply brushed over all the sensitive details, only revealing that he was now hunter-nin level.

"Sorry for letting you all worry. I am fine, just busy working on some standard hunter-nin missions.” He said with a smile. Despite his huge omission of details, everyone on the table, except An, knew what the hunter-nin actually does. In Kirigakure, most hunter-nin, including Shō himself, were known as Hunter-nin and were responsible for hunting and killing people.

Despite the warm color of the room and foods presented on the table, the atmosphere remained somber. Shō had considered giving up on his mission multiple times and knew firsthand the weight of the darkness that his job entailed. However, he was determined to focus on the present and enjoy this moment of warmth and comfort with his family. As he patted over his little sister's head, he spoke up, "But my job is finished for now, and I will stay in the country and spend time with An every day!”

"Itadakimasu!” Shō repeated after his sister’s cheerful exclamation. A sense of relief and happiness filled him as he finally managed to enjoy a meal with his loved ones peacefully. God knows how long it had been since he could have dinner without watching his back.

As Shō was about to pick up his hashi to dig into the delicious spread in front of him, his little sister's innocent question caught him off guard. "What is hunter-nin?" she asked, her big light-blue eyes staring up at him in curiosity. For a moment, Shō was at a loss for words. He had mentioned hunter-nin casually, without realizing that his little sister would actually question him for more. Maybe he should have stuck with the "Chūnin” story instead.

Collecting himself, Shō forced a smile to hide his anxiety and replied, "My dear, are you secretly a cat?" He teased her once more, knowing how feline creatures were renowned for their curiosity. After a brief pause, he continued, "Hunter-nin is a special force tasked with serving the Mizukage. However, I cannot tell you all the details right now. Onii-chan must reserve some for your bedtime stories, right?" he finished with a chuckle.

Shō felt a sense of calm wash over him as his sister giggled at his joke, and he couldn't help but let out a small smile. And did we... ... ...” It turned out Shō was just as curious like An — like brother, like sister.

Despite being young, the child noticed her elder sibling's reluctance to discuss the subject. She held her brother in high regard, considering him a sensible person who had reasons for his actions. Trusting him implicitly, she decided not to probe further and returned to enjoying her lunch with a smile. "I understand," she replied.

"Of course not, onii-chan! Can you imagine the fuss Mom would make if I started being picky about my food?" she quipped. Their mother was usually calm, peaceful, and sophisticated, but there were moments when she transformed into an entirely different person. In short, it was best not to get on her bad side. "Thank you," the young girl expressed, graciously accepting everything Shō placed on her plate and finishing it all without leaving a trace.

After the satisfying meal, An and their grandmother headed to the kitchen to fetch some desserts and green tea. "You know, nothing much has happened in the village since you left on your mission. You see, ever since I was a child, I've always dreamt of opening a café. A few months ago, an amazing opportunity to move to this area presented itself, so I couldn't resist," the elderly woman chuckled, responding to some of the young man's inquiries, while the little one and her husband continued relishing their sweets.

"Shō, I can tell you're exhausted. Why don't you go upstairs and take a rest? We haven't thrown away anything; everything from your old room has been moved to your new one," the grandmother suggested, expressing concern for her grandson's well-being and the need for him to catch his breath.

"Mhm, go rest, onii-chan," An chimed in with a smile. "If you fall asleep, I can wake you up later." "It's good to have you back, Shō," their grandfather added, rising from his seat at the table before leaving the room. Meanwhile, An and the elderly lady started tidying up the table.

The dinner table was swiftly cleared by An and her grandmother, who worked together with excellent coordination. The hall quickly returned to its usual state, filled with tables that had been stored away for the family gathering. "An, you can go upstairs; I'll finish up here," signaled the older woman, motioning with her hand. An, the young Gurē, bowed and replied softly, "Okay," before making her way upstairs.

Upstairs, a serene atmosphere enveloped the area, and An made sure not to disrupt it, knowing that Shō was sleeping in one of the connected rooms. She entered her own room, changed into her pajamas, and headed to the bathroom for a relaxing bath. Despite her calm surroundings, she was still brimming with excitement about her sibling's return home.

After a while, a petite figure of a girl stood before a closed door. "Onii-chan, are you asleep?" she whispered, slowly opening the wooden door, allowing a faint beam of light to seep into the dark room. "How about a bedtime story?" An very softly suggested, hoping her brother wasn't asleep. She hoped he wasn't, and that if he was, he'd wake up even with this low amount of nose, but she knew it was fine if he didn't.

An’s soft and gentle voice brought Shō back to consciousness, and he smiled at the sight of his little sister peeking into his room. "Of course! Come here!” He waved at his sister as he quickly scrambled through his mind to pick a decent bedtime story for her.

As An climbed and snuggled up to him with eyes wide with anticipation, Shō knew how much she loved stories, and he was more than happy to oblige. He cleared his throat and changed his tone a little to mimic a wise old narrator. "Ahem.”

"Once upon a time, there were two siblings who lived in the woods. Due to poverty, they were forced to venture into the woods looking for food.” This was a story that Shō picked up during his covert operation in the far east. Seeing An’s face light up with curiosity, Shō knew he had made the right choice. He paused briefly before continuing with the story.

"After days of wandering, they discovered a big tall gingerbread house…”

"A house made of cookies?” An interrupted excitedly with shining eyes.

"Yes, a literal cookie house.” Shō chuckled, knowing An would not hesitate to move into it if such an opportunity arose.
