Before being assigned to another mission, he needed to seize the time off given to him to train, and become much stronger. Despite his aversion to violence, he came to understand that strength was essential to protect loved ones. Swearing to be the guardian angel of his family, Shō chose to tread deeper into the darkness, pushing the moral line even further. Clutched in his hand was a small piece of paper bearing a list of names - the names of former hunter-nin, many of whom were among the elite. However make no mistake, none of them were your everyday friendly neighbours, they were anything but. Yet, in his pursuit of strength, he had to seek them out, even if they were not sharing the same views or personality.

"Kuronmeru Keiji, also known as the Bloodhound..." Shō read the name aloud in his bedroom. Given the emphasis on privacy, there was not much additional information provided. Even as a hunter-nin, acquiring such a list from the higher up was already fairly fortunate, so he had no complaints. However, being an educated Kiri-nin, Shō was aware of the fact that Kuronmeru is a prestigious clan in Kirigakure, possessing a formidable kekkei genkai capable of manipulating blood. "That likely explains the moniker..." he mused.

After a long pause, he stood up from the bed. "I suppose it's time to go." With that, he donned a simple grey robe before departing from the house. Making his way to the Kuronmeru clan compound, Shō resolved to test his luck and try to meet the infamous Bloodhound.

A young woman slid into Keiji's room, though it was in truth a study - he hadn't slept here in many years. The ruffling sound of papers could be heard from the desk as he pushed scrolls and documents around. Racks and shelves lined the walls to the point where it seemed like they ought to be sagging.

"There's a man here to see you, sir." The woman said meekly. His relative attempted to retreat behind the door, but Keiji called out and stopped her. "Bring him here for me."

She froze up a little. Clearly, she'd been told not to escort anyone in without express permission from a true Kuronmeru. Keiji no doubt had been mentioned as an exception to that. Or, at least, a grey area. "Well, the clan head said-"

"Don't care," he spat. They locked eyes for a moment. Keiji's won. "Get him."

The girl scurried off, her footsteps retreating down the hall. She glided down the stairs and to the main foyer, sliding the door open to Gurē Shō who stood waiting outside.

"This way, sir." she said while looking around to make sure there weren't any other relatives around.

After a quick walk, she opened the door for him into Keiji's study. A light breeze wafted in from the window behind the Kuronmeru, carrying the scent of old parchment. He traced his fingers over the dark grains in the finished surface of the wooden desk.

With a gesture to the comfortable chair that sat afore him, Keiji greeted his guest.

"Gurē Shō, yes?" He smiled, though it didn't seem overly genuine. "I've heard good things. How can I help you?"

The soft rustling of scrolls and the scent of aged parchment mingled in the air, creating an atmosphere of knowledge and power. As he approached the desk, Shō met Keiji's gaze, a mixture of scrutiny and assessment. The young Gurē couldn't help but sense the potent aura emanating from the man before him, confirming that Keiji's reputation was indeed earned.

"Yes, that's correct." Shō replied to the man’s question, his tone respectful yet determined. "I am Gurē Shō. Thank you for granting me an audience." Shō took the offered seat, settling into it with a controlled calmness. He could feel the presence of powerful chakra lingering in the air, a reminder of the power that resided within this family.

"I've heard tales of your reputation, Kuronmeru-sama." Shō began, his gaze steady. "You are strong, hence I come seeking to learn from you, through spar or just shared training." He paused, his expression earnest. "I, too, am on a journey to become stronger. Of course, it would not be free. Do tell me if you want anything in return." Shō's eyes held a glint of determination as he locked gazes with Keiji, awaiting for the man’s response. The room seemed to hang in anticipation, the weight of their interaction tangible in the air.

The air hung for a moment, the room quiet. A creaking noise split it as Keiji's leaned back in his chair. He played with his thoughts.

"They teach flattery in the corps now?" he jested with a wry smile. His hand waved through the air in dismissal of payment or compensation, cutting through the sunbeams cast by the open window. Small grains of dust flitted away through the light.

Folding his hands together under his chin, he pulled at his lip with a finger. Keiji didn't seem to have much distinction between how he acted when alone and when with company.

"I won't begrudge anyone wanting to grow," he said. "I'm happy to help, however I can. Free of charge."

Keiji studied the young man's face. Gurē Shō, he thought to himself. His dark-dark eyes peered into his junior's piercing blue ones. The Hanged Man. He'd heard and read much, despite the classified nature of some of it. Little was truly barred from someone with one foot in the Oinin and one in the Suiryu.

"And how do you aim to become stronger, Shō?" Keiji asked while watching him with interest. The lack of an honorific was a deliberate choice. He doubted Gurē would squirm all that much about it. "We can always swap blows, but I'd like to know more about your goals first."

A training courtyard could be seen behind Keiji's silhouette, through the window and below. It was always an option, like he'd said, though in his mind he pictured Shō as a katana - he was strong and sturdy, the time for beating the steel into shape was already past. At least for Keiji. Yet perhaps he could sharpen the edge to a fine point.

The swift and positive response from Keiji might have been the best outcome Shō could have anticipated, yet it carried an unexpected tinge of humour and sarcasm that was oddly reassuring. It was as if he was conversing with a familiar teacher. Just as Shō was about to respond in a more relaxed manner, a flicker of caution interrupted him - a reminder that nothing truly came for free in this world, especially in Kirigakure.

Taking a measured breath, Shō subtly bowed while remaining seated. "Thank you, Kuronmeru-sama." he acknowledged, his voice carrying a hint of gratitude without dropping the honourable suffix, even though Keiji had been conversing in a much more casual manner. Honestly, Shō did not really mind; it was just their style of conversation.

After a moment's reflection, he formulated his response to Keiji's question. "My ultimate goal is to enhance my genjutsu skills, and for that purpose, I'm dedicated to refining my chakra control." Shō recognized that strengthening genjutsu techniques encompassed various methods, spanning from layering illusions to creating lingering effects. However, they all shared a common requirement: a high level of chakra control.

Anticipating a potential reluctance on the part of a stranger to engage in joint training, Shō hastened to add, "If you'd prefer to engage in a spar rather than training, I completely understand." Sparring would also contribute to Shō's advancement in his pursuit, allowing him to apply his acquired knowledge. Yet more than that, sparring would be much more exciting than the former, a sentiment that shared by many.

Quite formal, Keiji thought to himself. Or cautious. That wouldn't be entirely unwarranted. His reputation encompassed more than just his strength, and most of what was said was unsavory. Shō might not have anything to fear from Keiji, but he no doubt had heard about the kind of work he took pleasure in.

He ran his finger up his cheek, scraping at the short stubble that'd grown in.

"I'm certainly not adverse to it," he commented. "My genjustu could also use some work, though that'd be in berth and not fundamentals." Many of those techniques could be incredibly useful - it wasn't like Keiji to leave advantages untaken.

"Why not both?" he asked as he picked himself up from his chair and crossed to a shelf on the other side of the room. Keiji spent a few moments plucking out a choice few scrolls before returning to his seat and pushing them across the desk to Shō. "These are a couple of techniques I never got around to learning," he said while opening one up.

There were a few different lower rank techniques contained within them. Keiji left the choice of which they'd practice with up to Shō. They could all come in handy, so he wasn't too picky. Besides he'd come to him for help: it wouldn't be fair to force one on him.

"Give us both a chance to pick something new up, and for you to practice your chakra control." He rolled his up and placed it with the others on the desk. "There certainly some pointers I can show you while we train. I've learned to make the most of things: chakra," he smiled with a mocking grin, though it wasn't directed at Shō. "and some of those excuses for shinobi they saddle me up with for missions."

Shō's gaze wandered over the extensive collection of scrolls and books that encircled him, each containing a treasure trove of knowledge waiting to be unearthed. The realisation that such a wealth of information was at his fingertips was humbling, and he marvelled at the depth of understanding these scrolls represented. After a short pause, he composed himself and responded, "Yes, and thank you." Despite his best attempt, he could not really hide the sense of awe and excitement.

Shō's focus swiftly returned to the scrolls, each one a potential key to his growth. His fingers brushed delicately over the timeworn edges of the parchment, lingering briefly before descending onto a specific scroll. With extreme care, his finger hovered over the scroll's surface, tracing the delicate lines of ink that gave life to words, intricate diagrams, and symbols. His eyes moved diligently across the meticulously penned instructions, absorbing the contents of each technique into his mind.

Among the array of options, the technique named "Nise no Kuchiyose" was the only one captured his attention. It appeared to be a low ranked but effective subtle genjutsu. The description outlined the ability to manipulate an opponent's perception, inducing the belief in the summoning of a creature that existed solely in illusion. It presented a strategic deception, capable of creating advantageous openings during the heat of battle.

Recognizing that mastering this technique could not only enrich his genjutsu repertoire but also refine his chakra control, Shō's conviction solidified. His gaze shifted to Keiji with absolute certainty. "I've made my choice. I will be selecting Nise no Kuchiyose." he affirmed with a touch of excitement in his tone. "It is a really interesting and useful technique." Despite having been granted the freedom to choose, Shō chose to wait for Keiji's response as a sign of respect.

"Very good choice," Keiji said with a genuine smile. "I've been eyeing that one heavily. Very useful."

He scooped the others up and deposited them into a tray beside the desk to be put away later. Keiji'd be the one to do it, of course. He didn't trust the servants with his things, expectedly. And if he knew exactly where everything in the room was, he could see easily if Yosei or Enyo'd been snooping.

Pushing off the desk, he stood and gestured for Shō to do the same. "Let's get to it then, shall we?"

Leading the young man, he locked the door behind them and then leisurely headed down to the training courtyard. Together they stepped out onto the dusty, coarse ground.

Keiji loosened the belt around his kimono a bit, then adjusted his clothes for comfort. He took the scroll they'd chosen and unfurled it, taking a moment to read over it in depth.

"Nise no Kuchiyose..." Seems simple enough, he thought. Though genjutsu is always more difficult in practice than theory.

When he'd finished, he passed it over. "How about this? You're more familiar with the basics of genjutsu, and I, chakra control. I'll detail the intricacies of control, you explain the genjutsu process. Help us both get the fundamentals down."

Making a hand seal, Keiji began to build chakra up within himself. He narrated the process, explaining the proper ways of combining the body and spiritual energy and the proper ratio for genjutsu such as this. "Good control is less about using the least amount of chakra possible, at least at first. It's about molding the proper ratio, on the first try. Get the ratio wrong and you'll overcompensate with more chakra of the other type."

How much of this Shō already knew, Keiji wasn't sure. But emphasizing ratio was often the best way to prevent any excess of wasted chakra. Beyond that, one had to have a good understanding of their own body and mind.

"Your condition has bigger impact than most people realize. If you're exhausted, you'll have a hard time molding body energy. Bad mental state," he said. "And you'll experience the same with spiritual. The latter you can influence, the prior not so much."

Keiji released the seal and focused on Shō, watching carefully. "All right, take me through the Genjutsu side of things."

Feeling relieved immediately after receiving a positive answer, he listened intently to every word his senior shared, mentally noting the crucial points to remember. As Keiji concluded, Shō nodded in understanding, preparing himself to contribute his part to the training. "I will do my best to explain, although I must admit I am not really that good at teaching." Shō prefaced it with a touch of humility. Over the course of their interactions, it was clear that his confidence had grown, and he felt particularly assured discussing the subject he was specialised in. "Allow me to share what I've learned."

Shō's voice carried a newfound confidence, reflecting his expertise in the matter at hand, while still maintaining a humble tone towards his senior. "A genjutsu is created when a ninja controls the chakra flow of a target’s cerebral nervous system, thereby manipulating their five senses." He quoted the fundamental definition directly from the textbook before continuing in his own words, "In other words, effective execution of genjutsu demands precise chakra control."

Taking a brief moment to clear his throat, Shō resumed, "However, 'chakra control' is a rather broad concept, so let us delve deeper. In the context of the technique we're about to explore, Nise no Kuchiyose, subtlety takes center stage." His words carried an air of intrigue, inviting his listener to delve into the intricacies of the jutsu. "Many individuals tend to shy away from genjutsu due to its perceived vulnerability to quick dispelling and its perceived lack of immediate damage. Yet, they fail to grasp the key of illusion is to create an illusion so convincing that it entirely deceives the victim's senses to create an opening." Shō's words held true, the so-called useless moments of misdirection and vulnerability were often underestimated. A single lapse in focus often decide a shinobi's fate and that was not something you could easily attain through the use of ninjutsu.

"Mm, good. You're right," he said with a faint smile.

"Let's you do much that you wouldn't be able to otherwise. Far from useless."

Keiji recalled the scrolls contents, then prepared to test it out. He had some experience with Genjutsu, though truthfully he was probably less skilled at it than his junior.

"Let me give it a try then, if you don't mind."

He built up his chakra, focusing it inside of him. With a slap to the ground as though it were a real summoning jutsu, Keiji attempted the genjutsu. With fine enough chakra control, he targeted the parts of Shō's mind in an attempt to materialize the image of a large rat.

As he'd imagined, despite getting the chakra usage and ratio as close to perfect as one could hope for on a first try, it wasn't a particularly impressive showing. Thus far he'd only delved into simple Genjutsu, such as blurring vision by targeting the visual areas. Even with superior control, the intricacies of where and what to target would take more work.

No doubt to Shō's eyes, the large rodent Keiji'd 'summoned' didn't even appear as such. Instead it'd appear more like a grey smudge, blurry and with a quality that obviously suggested it wasn't real.

Of course, Keiji wouldn't be able to see the 'rat' himself: he'd have to rely on Gurē's feedback.

"How was that? Sure didn't feel quite right," he said with a grin. "but first attempts rarely do."

Keiji released the genjutsu, then motioned for Shō to give it a try as well.

"I doubt you have much issue with it, but make sure to keep a calm and focused mind - it'll help with control."

The image of the rat, or what was supposed to be a rat, materialised with a lack of precision, appearing more like a censored picture more than a creature. It was far from the level of realism that both of them aimed for. As Keiji turned to him, inquiring about the outcome, Shō's mind raced. Should he sugarcoat his response, or should he be candid and provide honest criticism? His upbringing and the principles he had learned from his parents emphasised the importance of diplomacy and tact. Brutal honesty wasn't a virtue; it was a vice. However, he also understood the value of precise feedback in a training scenario, especially in a field as nuanced as genjutsu.

Shō decided that striking a balance between honesty and respect was crucial. With a nod, he began, "Your attempt showed a great deal of potential, especially considering it was your first try." He chose his words carefully, highlighting the positive while not disregarding the room for improvement. "The concept of subtlety and precise chakra control was definitely there. However, the clarity of the illusion itself could use some refinement. Currently it is hmm... a little blurry." He made sure to maintain a friendly and encouraging tone in his honest evaluation.

To conserve his chakra, he slapped his hands together, dissipating the illusion as he awaited Keiji's assessment.

Shō's golem stood tall afore Keiji, though it possessed an ethereal quality. In a similar way to his own, this 'summon' seemed incomplete.

In the golem's case, it seemed to be from a lack of chakra invested in the technique - causing the vision to not appear as concrete as other things seen by the eyes.

Keiji cradled his chin with his hand. "Too little chakra, I think."

The proper amount and ratio would come with practice, but otherwise Shō's attempt did not lack the proper form that Keiji's had. "It's got a definite form, but it's not all there - like a lingering shadow over my vision."

He'd likely have to pour more than necessary into the technique, then whittle it down to the correct amount and ratio.

Keiji built up his chakra once more in another attempt. He slapped his hand on the ground once more, though unbeknownst to him he was no longer targeting the correct part(s) of the mind necessary.

The rat's form was more be more concrete this time, but his target had subtly moved on accident from the visual system to the one directly upstream from it. Shō's mind might realize there was a rat in front of him, though he wouldn't really see it.

"Thank you." Shō responded with an awkward smile. Though failures were expected during the initial practice, he could not help but feel a twinge of embarrassment, considering he was a specialist of genjutsu. Nonetheless, he brushed these thoughts aside and settled in to observe Keiji's turn.

Keiji's hand met the ground once more, yet this time, there was no visual manifestation. Despite the lack of a visible image, Shō's mind detected a presence, an image of a rat lurking somewhere within his thoughts. The illusion was much improved this time, carrying a sense of solidity and realism. However, it seemed that Keiji might have encountered some difficulty in targeting the illusion to make it perceptible to the eye.

Still, the second attempt had clearly shown improvement, indicating that Keiji was getting closer to mastering the technique. "I couldn't see it, but I could sense it," Shō commented, his tone offering constructive feedback. "The form is far more defined this time. You just have to target it correctly." Shō then proceeded to dispel the lingering illusion from his mind using a quick hand seal, allowing his consciousness to return to its normal state.

As his turn came around once again, Shō recollected his previous attempt and aimed to build upon it. He mentally refined and evaluated his chosen ratio. With a controlled clap of his hands, he pressed his palm against the ground, initiating the technique. Even though the hand seal was not required, Shō still did it, it was more of an instinctive habit. He knew that these could help in making the whole illusion more realistic, even if they were just minor details.

A delicate haze of smoke materialised before Keiji's eyes, dissipating to reveal the familiar golem. This time, the image was notably improved - more lifelike, with well-defined features and a greater sense of substance. It was not perfect, but it was a commendable advance from his previous attempt.

Curious about the result from Keiji's perspective, Shō inquired, "Is it working now?" Despite the fact that he could not see anything from his point of view, he could vividly feel it in his mind as he controlled the movement of the golem.

"Better, much better," he said with a smile. "I'm sure it'll improve with practice, but it's usable as is."

Keiji eyed the imposing golem, checking it over for any mistakes. He didn't spot any, at least not any that pulled him out of the illusion. But for Shō's sake, he wanted to be sure. "Don't release it yet," he said. "I want to inspect it closer."

Carefully weaving his seals, Keiji cast a Kuronmeru jutsu that would boost his sight. Blood pooled around his eyes, darkening them as his visual acuity increased. Squinting, he focused in on the minute details of the 'summon.'

Certain minor things were off, such as the textures and sheen. Without the boost, he'd never have seen them - but with it, he could tell what was off. The minutiae almost made it seem like a cheap toy. Yet it'd be more than enough for most shinobi without enhanced perception.

Releasing his technique, he explained all the minor errors he'd seen - not to nitpick, but in a hope of aiding Shō. If he wanted to fool the most observant of enemies, he'd need to hyperfocus on the details: but that was another lesson for another time, preferably from a more experienced mentor.

The skin around his eyes returned to its normal pale color. Keiji rubbed his nose, then wiped his face with his hands to, apparently, manually move the used blood around. "How are you feeling about the chakra control?" he asked.

As the training session continued, Shō couldn't help but notice Keiji's use of a sight-enhancing technique, which resulted in a rather peculiar transformation of his eyes. Though his curiosity was piqued, he refrained from asking about it directly, understanding that certain techniques and abilities were personal to each shinobi.

"Thanks for the feedback." Shō responded sincerely to Keiji's assessment of his genjutsu attempt. He appreciated the guidance and the areas for improvement that Keiji had pointed out. With a quick hand gesture, he dispelled the illusion once again, ready to move forward.

Shō conveyed his observations to Keiji. Chakra control was a foundational skill for any shinobi, yet it held a distinct significance for genjutsu specialists. The intricacies of precisely manipulating chakra were what enabled the creation of seamless illusions capable of deceiving the senses. Every minutiae held importance in rendering the illusion genuinely convincing.

Determined as ever, he decided to hone his abilities through this approach. The prospect of simultaneously refining chakra control while mastering new genjutsu was nothing short of a dream come true for every genjutsu specialist.
