The hopeful Genin would step through a large metal door on the northern side of a square room, the man on the other side would say nothing as he stared down at him with his one eye, the other hidden by a patch. No words of luck would be said, no hints or help from the only other soul in the chamber. This was unlike the Genin Exams. There was no polite good luck or audible words given to audiences and crowds. Yumi was simply alone and as soon as the door clicked shut behind her, with the circular dog on the bulkhead door being span shut as she stepped through. It clicked shut, leaving Yumi in deafening silence.

If the young shinobi paid attention she would note that there was no airflow, no noise or outside distraction. Just the sound of her and her breathing. The room was equally as bland. Grey and concrete, walls on each side with two divots on each wall that led to eight dead ends. The dead ends seemed to hold nothing to them but a torch that lit up the dismal room with seven torches, one sat in darkness but it was much too dark to see into without some kind of light.

There was echoing of years of lack of care but it was obvious the room was well trodden. Used but not maintained. The delicate moulding along the edges of the walls where pretty symbols and sigils danced across the edges. Some were whole, some were damaged. There was a specific sigil on one wall directly opposite the entrance door and over the small platform, larger than all the others and certainly had had more time spent on crafting it. But for now it sat in total darkness, crumbled and uninviting.

In the centre of the room would be a barely maintained platform, four steps up and four steps down with nothing seemingly in the middle of the room, nothing unless one looked properly, except the torch light didn't quite reach the center of the room and without the light it would be hard to see what sat, if anything, on the platform. Parts of the floor had been damaged, dents in the stone some looked pretty like they were shaped intentionally, others were smashed with rock on them.

There was no obvious way out of the room, but there had to be one, for that had been their instructed task. Pounding on the door would almost certainly offer no help except to waste precious minutes as the air slipped out of the room. There was a puzzle to solve, but to solve the puzzle one had to explore the room.

Watching the older male leave her alone in the gloomy room silently, Yumi looked around. She seemed to be in some sort of square room that was badly lit. With no obvious exits, seeing as how the only one had closed behind her. Taking a moment to take everything in, the young kunoichi noticed something strange. It was quiet, too quiet. Almost as if nothing was getting in or out of this room now that the only entrance was closed. On the positive side of things, she didn’t have to worry about outside distractions bothering her. On the negative side of things, she was receiving no more fresh air. Seeing as how she needed oxygen to live, if she didn’t solve whatever mystery this room had, she would probably suffocate to death. Since that outcome wasn’t particularly appealing to her, Yumi got to work. Standing around doing nothing would just make her death come quicker. She had some exams to pass.

Reaching into her pocket and grabbing her scroll, Yumi unsealed Ms. Bubbles. As a puppet replica of herself appeared beside her, she directed her to the nearest torch to the east of her. Yumi herself stayed near the entrance in case there was some sort of trap near the torches. She doubted it, but it was better safe than sorry. Watching her puppet near the torch, the young puppeteer would attempt to see if anything was strange around the torch, such as a button or item. She would also have Ms. Bubbles attempt to remove the torch from its position on the wall. If it could be removed, she would have Ms. Bubbles carry it with her in order to light up the dark places in the room. If nothing happened after the first torch was checked, Yumi would have Ms. Bubbles check out the rest of the seven torches in the room. Along the way, Yumi would keep her eyes peeled for anything strange in the room, since things were definitely not as they seemed.

If Ms. Bubbles managed to grab one of the torches, Yumi would have her walk up to the fourth step back by the entrance and shine the light towards the middle of the room. Ms. Bubbles would then wave the torch around so that every corner on the rundown platform was revealed by the flickering light. Yumi would take special care to examine the dents in the stone since some of them seemed too unnatural to be caused by natural means. Ms. Bubbles would also attempt to clear off rocks on some of the pieces that looked important and were covered in rubble.

Once this was done, Yumi would send Ms. Bubbles to look at the sigil on the south side of the room. With a potential light source in Ms. Bubble's hand, Yumi would attempt to look at the sigil that should now be visible. Once she saw it, the young kunoichi would attempt to look around for anything else noticeable around the sigil. Attempting to memorize the sigil in her mind, Yumi would turn back and look at the symbols that decorated the edges of the wall in order to find some sort of pattern or if any of the symbols were the same as the sigil she just found. Last but not least she would check out the unlit area of the room east of the sigil to see what the darkness hid.

The kunoichi would set to work straight away, summoning her puppet and setting it to explore different areas of the room. Using the puppet to test the torches would prove to be a smart move, though ultimately not important. The first torch would unveil nothing, simply a torch attached to its holder and bolted onto the wall. Attempts to move it would prove unsuccessful.

The second through to the sixth torches would prove the same, none would move and none had anything to offer that showed any secret to unlocking the clue to open the way forth. One of the torches, not specifically the last one, would prove to be loose. Not quite loose enough to easily lift, but with a little strength from the puppet it would come away from its iron castings and sit steadily in Ms. Bubbles' grip.

Stepping up onto the fourth step with the Genin behind her would allow the torch to illuminate the room around her in a 2 foot radius, not enough to light the entire room but enough to see the central platform and all the different slots in the floor. The puppets attempt to remove the rubble would prove successful and some of the stones would reveal yet more of the platform until the illuminated floor of the raised platform appeared to have several intentional carvings in it, all of them different. Some squares, others hexagonal, three circular of different sizes. But time was not spent looking at them all individually. Instead Yumi would look at the sigil on the south wall before moving herself behind her puppet as Ms. Bubbles explored the dark, unlit corner. If she explored the corner herself she would find seven sigil blocks on the floor, different shapes with different sigils imprinted onto them.

The puppet casting the light would illuminate the darkened corner, several metallic blocks would be seen on the floor. But without the Genin getting up close herself to look at them it would be hard to discern what each block had imprinted into it. If the Genin was perceptive enough, she would note that the torch Ms. Bubbles held and those in the other corners were beginning to dim and as time went by, the radius to which it illuminated would lessen. For now there was no real difference, but with time tarrying away, who knew how long the light would last?

Thanks to the light of Ms. Bubbles’ torch, Yumi was able to notice all of the different slots in the clearing. Based on the empty depressions in the stone, she would need to put something in them in order to get a reaction. And judging from the shapes and sizes of the carvings, she would need a variety of keys in order to fill up all of the empty spaces. She didn’t look at them too closely though since she planned on coming back for them. After all, the odds of the carvings disappearing were slim to none. Inanimate objects just didn’t move by themselves after all.

The sigil on the south wall resembled some sort of flower with petals. Sixteen petals to be exact, but she wasn’t sure if that tidbit of information was important. Still it might be nice to have in the future.

Noticing that Ms. Bubbles had found something in the unlit corner, Yumi approached cautiously in order to take a closer look. Thanks to the light of her puppet’s torch, the young kunoichi was able to see seven metallic blocks with different shapes on them. Moving her fingers slightly, Yumi had Ms. Bubbles hand her the torch. With a torch in one hand and chakra strings controlling her puppet in the other, Yumi had Ms. Bubbles pick up the seven blocks. She stuck some of them in her puppet’s pocket while the others she had Ms. Bubbles carry in her arms.

As the duo walked back towards the clearing, Yumi noticed that her surroundings seemed darker than normal. Were the torches slowly going out? Narrowing her eyes slightly, the young puppeteer made up her mind to work even faster than she was. Trying to solve whatever puzzle this was in the dark would probably be impossible for her. And that wasn’t a theory she wanted to test.

Once the two arrived back at the location of the carvings, Ms. Bubbles placed all seven of the blocks on the ground. Handing her puppet back the torch, Yumi had her hold it over her as she examined the blocks she found. She turned over each block in her hand and examined what imprint was on each one. As she did this, she glanced at the impressions that were on the ground to see if any matched up with the blocks she was examining. If they did, she would attempt to slot the blocks in the carvings based on their shape, assuming that the blocks even fit. If they had the same shape, then the blocks should fit, theoretically speaking.

Yumi was right to look at the blocks on the ground, seven altogether, some really oddly shaped - diamonds and hexagons, some perfectly cylindrical. Three were flat circles; one about a centimetre in depth, the second about three centimetres in depth and the last was about ten centimetres in depth. Upon further inspection she would note that two of the seals had the flower insignia on it one with fifteen petals and one with seventeen petals, the last - and largest - petal would have sixteen petals on it. Significant or not, the girl would take note before carrying all the seals back to the centre.

With the puppet holding the dimming torch light above her the girl would begin to work out where each one clicked into place. Some of the shapes seemed to slot into place without issue, though nothing of note would happen in the room except the sound of metal clicking into stone as Yumi pressed some of the shapes into the right slots.

The last three she would hold would be the three cylindrical seals of different sizes. There would only be three remaining slots and the girl would attempt to click them into their proper place. Yet placing all three in their appropriate slots of different times seemed to do nothing, nothing would light up - almost as if she hadn't put them in in the right order, or perhaps because she had not placed them in at the same time. Then again, could that really be expected of a Genin with only two arms?

Yumi would have to look a little harder at the seals and the slots, determine if there was a way to place all three of them in at the same time and if there was a correct order to placing them in... undoubtedly, there was.

After a bit of finagling, Yumi managed to slot four of the seven metallic objects that she had. The three remaining objects were flat circles of differing depths. The first had fifteen petals, the second had seventeen petals, and the third and biggest one had sixteen petals on it. The same amount as the seal on the far side of the wall. The young kunoichi wondered if there was some type of relationship between the two. Having the same number of petals on both objects just couldn’t be a coincidence, could it?

Putting that thought into the back of her mind for now, Yumi would look at the three remaining slots she had left. She had put them in randomly last time, but nothing had happened. Judging from the look of things, there were only nine possible solutions to this puzzle. However this was incorrect. Although there might be nine combinations, that only applied if she put in one seal at a time. If she placed two seals in at once, then the number of combinations she could would increase. The same thing would happen if she decided to put in all three in at once as well. There wouldn’t be too many more combinations if she did it that way, but it was still more than the amount she started with. Still, the quicker she got started, the faster the puzzle would be solved.

Lining up the thinnest circle with the first slot, the three centimeter circle for the second, and the widest circle in front of the third, Yumi glanced at the ground. For her first experiment, she wanted to try putting the seals in their slots at the same time. It wouldn’t be too hard for her, seeing as how controlling multiple objects was her forte as a puppeteer.

Extending her unoccupied hand out, Yumi had her chakra strings encircle the three seals. Wrapping around them tightly, the young kunoichi lifted them up and placed them down into their slots at the same time. If this first combination didn’t work, she would rearrange the seals and try to place them down in a different order. Once she tried out all of those attempts, she would begin placing two seals down at once and then the third one last, all while testing out the few combinations there were.

NAME: Kakomu mojiretsu [Encircling String]
RANK: C
CHAKRA USAGE: Very Low
CLASSIFICATION: Ninjutsu (Puppetry)
ELEMENT: None
DESCRIPTION:

By extending their chakra strings, a puppeteer is able to encircle an object and grab onto it with their strings. The puppeteer can then either pull the object closer to them with the strings or fling it away. This technique is often used to pull distant switches or grab faraway objects. This technique only works on light, small to medium sized objects. If the object is too heavy, the strings won't be able to do anything but latch on.

The seals would prove to be a bit of a ballache to get into the right slot. Time after time of attempting to place the seals into their slots would prove fruitless, or they'd go in and then pop back out as if something was protesting to her proceeding. Eventually though, after much perseverance, when Yumi would slot three of the seals in at once, with the petals lining up in numerical order, they would fit into their seal holes and click in place before receding into the ground and locking into place.

One by one the seals began to light up, petal by petal until each petal across each seal was lit. The light pooled across the petal and began to bleed out across the floor until the cracks in the podium floor began to swell with light, trickling slowly towards the door. Painfully slow, really, since the air was getting thinner. The light sifted down through the podium cracks until it pooled at the base of the large seal on the far wall. Suddenly the light shot upwards until the petals illuminated on the far wall and the seal began to rumble. And not just the seal, but the floor in which Yumi was stood on too.

As if the shaking was a sign the floor would part upon the podium steps, bricks and stone falling away into darkness. Yumi would have to react quickly, for the floor would give way around her too if she didn't move. Darkness gripped the hole in the floor below, surely a place to take a torch if one had the courage, while the seal on the wall had parted in two to reveal another room. Not as shrouded in darkness, square and musty with a door sitting on the far side of the six foot room. Yumi had two options if she had not fallen into the floor: search the room ahead or search the dark cavern below. If she chose to search the cavern below she'd find herself in a room about thirty foot high that ran parallel to the room she had started in. There would be no obvious ways to get out of the room and just like the beginning room it was darkness.  If she chose to explore the room past the seal there would be nothing of importance at first, except the growing cobwebs that sat stale in the musty air and a door that wouldn't budge regardless of what kind of strength was thrown at it.

After a few sets of trial and error, Yumi finally managed to solve the puzzle. As the seals clicked into place and receded into the ground, she watched as each seal began to light up. The moment all of them were lit, the light began to bleed into the floor and into the surrounding room. Feeling the floor beneath her feet rumble, the young puppeteer quickly moved back with Ms. Bubbles next to her. It was a good thing too, seeing as how the floor she had just been on had now crumbled away into nothingness, leaving only darkness behind. Glaring into the blackness warily, the young kunoichi glanced towards the direction of the unlit seal. She had heard some rumbling there as well, so something probably had happened in that direction.

With her puppet in tow, Yumi walked alongside the wall next to the podium and approached the newly revealed room. Sending Ms. Bubbles into it first to light the way, the young kunoichi began carefully examining her surroundings. The only obvious thing there was a door that wouldn’t move when she tried to budge it. She would try to examine further to see if there was any detail she missed at first glance. If she didn’t find anything, she would have Ms. Bubbles walk around every corner of the room, tapping the walls here and there. If Yumi couldn’t find anything special about the room through her observations, she would head back into the previous room to look at the gloomy darkness that was now present in the recently opened hole.

The kunoichi would examine the dark hole first, but without throwing a light source into the darkness it would be inevitably harder to see. She didn't take the plunge of faith into the dark, whether it was a smart or wise move remained to be seen, instead she chose to examine the new doorway created by the parting of the seal and as she walked into the room it would be disappointing to notice that asides the door that was immovable by any means there were four pedestals sitting around chest height in front of the door.

With nothing else in the room except the drab sand and cobwebs, it would be painfully obvious that energy would best be spent looking at the new area opened up in the floor. But caution was used and the dying of the light would only show so much as the girl moved to stand back over the hole. Bare licks against the darkness the torch only provided the assessment of how far the dirty floor was down, roughly six foot. Not a tremendous height for one so agile... but then much hinged on whether the girl would take the plunge into the dark or not. There was something missing in the adjacent room to the platform, with only the pedestals providing the clue that something was meant to be upon it.

If the girl took the plunge, she would have to be careful not to let her torch light extinguish from the sudden jump. If she managed she would find that the torch light once more had receded in span, now only a 3 foot radius around herself, opening up the hole in the floor had spread the oxygen out significantly... The sound of dripping could be heard from the hole. If she chose to explore the dark depths the girl would come across a smaller room still to the one above it, similar style patterns on the walls as on the seals, crumbled and decaying edging but no seals this time to pick up. Small jugs, made of clay and ceramic, sat covered in dust in various corners of the room. But she would only see this if at first she took the plunge into the darkness, determined whether to trust her instincts and take a plunge into the unknown or take another look back around the room she was in, where the light was strongest.

Inside the newly revealed room the only noticeable things were four pedestals in front of the door. Seeing as how she couldn’t brute force her way out, Yumi would have to put something on these pedestals in order for the way out to open. But what did she have that would allow her to do that? The only movable objects she had found in this area were the multitude of shapes that she had slotted into the floor. But even if those shapes were meant to be on the pedestals, the young kunoichi wasn’t even sure if she would be able to remove them from their slots. The last three seals had definitely locked themselves into place, but she couldn’t remember if the previous four shapes had done the same. There was only one way to find out.

Before she left the room, Yumi attempted to examine the pedestals more in depth to see if she could find any hints. Would there be words or symbols engraved on the pedestal that she had missed, or would there be nothing at all? After examining the pedestals, the small genin would walk back into the previous room only to let out a pained sigh. How could she have forgotten?

Even if her theory was correct, the shapes she had put into the slots were now in the dark hole that she had wanted to avoid. She didn’t particularly want to go down there, but it seemed her choice had been made for her. Nothing nearby was new, so the only place left to explore was the gloomy darkness that was currently beneath her feet. And judging by the receding light from her torch, she would need to be quick about it. Exploring around in complete darkness would only lead to negative outcomes. If she got out of this, she would definitely make sure to make a puppet that had its own source of light. Still, thoughts like that wouldn’t help her out right now, so she put that little tidbit of information into the back of her mind.

Based on the light from her torch, the floor located in the sinister darkness was about six feet down. A pretty decent drop for one as small as herself. Before she made the unwilling plunge however, she would need to make sure she would be able to get back up. If the newly revealed room didn’t have those pedestals in it, she probably wouldn’t have worried about it. But since it did, Yumi was quite sure that she would have to eventually go back up there to unlock a way out. Normally she would just wall walk her way back out, but she wasn’t sure if that would work in this particular case. After all, it wasn’t like she had a conveniently horizontal wall to walk back up on. Thanks to how the floor crumbled, she was pretty sure the walls were uneven or lumpy. She would’ve loved to check and see if that was the case, but unfortunately for her, the dimming light of her torch probably wouldn’t be enough to show her what she wanted. It only took her a few more moments of thinking before she figured out a solution. The young puppeteer would use her puppets obviously!

Reaching into her pocket with her unused hand, Yumi grabbed her puppet scroll and unsealed Mr. Bubbles. It wasn’t often that his immense size came in handy, but this was one of those situations. Directing him towards the edge, Yumi had him jump down into the darkness. Due to how large he was, the drop barely affected Mr. Bubbles. Opening up his arms, the young kunoichi had Ms. Bubbles leap into his arms while carefully holding the torch. Once Ms. Bubbles was safely down there and lighting up the nearby area, Yumi leapt towards Mr. Bubbles as well.

While being caught by a puppet made of metal wasn’t particularly comforting, it was better than getting a sprained ankle. Patting Mr. Bubbles on the side, Yumi looked around. With Ms. Bubbles close to her, she could only see up to three feet around her, which was quite worrying. She wanted to go faster, but needless rushing through unknown areas would only lead to her death. So she would need to move at a moderate cautious space even if she wanted to move faster. A ninja that wasn’t careful was a dead one.

As the puppeteer and her nonliving menagerie explored, they soon found a small room with various patterns on the wall. She couldn’t see any of the seals she had previously used, so she wondered if they had been destroyed. Still, there had to be something down here. As Yumi set Ms. Bubbles to look around the room once more in case she missed anything, she redirected her attention to the jugs sitting around in a nearby corner. Directing Mr. Bubbles over to that location, she would have him grab each of the jugs and place it near her. Once they were all nearby, she would have Ms. Bubbles come back from her exploring and light up the area around the jugs. With the now needed light overhead, Yumi would peer into the jugs to see what she found. Would the objects she needed be in there? Or would she find nothing but dust and cobwebs?

Into the dark Yumi went! But smartly, a good thing too because any wild jump down surely would have extinguished the flame from the torch... She climbed onto Mr. Bubbles with a short jump and was placed down in the small room. The room wasn't as big as the upper room, but it had certainly more detail to it than the upper room.

Walls were decayed, yes, but the jugs littered around the room were an obvious indicator that something was needed to access the door way above. For now, Mr. Bubbles would collect the jugs and bring them back to Yumi in the lit part of the room. She would peer inside them, but would find nothing but the dusty clay innards of the jug. The outside, however, would prove to be much more interesting. The white clay jug had a narrow lipped hole on the top, expanding wide like a milk bottle. Each jug had a different animal on it; one a horse, one a lion and one a wolf all with the same blue inked pattern.

Now the decision was to be made: did Yumi continue to look around the dark room? Or would she continue back to the surface to see if she could make anything of the jugs in the upper new room?

A) Continue to look around the room.

Unfortunately for Yumi, the only thing she found inside the jugs was dust. Thankfully the trail didn’t end there. The three jugs that she had found each had a different animal on it. One had a horse, another had a lion, and the final one had a wolf. These pictures were no doubt for a puzzle she would encounter later on, but until then they would just be mere decorations.

Leaving Mr. Bubbles to guard the jugs in the dark room, Yumi began to walk side by side with Ms. Bubbles in order to closely investigate the rest of the room. There had been four pedestals up top, and she had only found three jugs with those specific images on it. Based on the count, the young kunoichi could make an educated guess that there was still a missing jug with an animal depicted on it down here. She needed to make sure she checked every nook and cranny because if she had to come back after missing something, her precious time would be wasted. And then she would suffocate to death because of her idiocy. That was something the female puppeteer didn’t plan to let happen.

As she walked throughout the room, Yumi would poke at the decayed walls to see if any would crumble or were close to that state. There might be something hidden behind them after all. She would also keep a close eye on the ground since that was the most obvious spot for another jug to be. There had to be another clue down here, and all she needed to do was find it.

The girl would set to work collecting the jugs, she too would be correct in noticing that there had been four pedestals yet only three jugs to hand. Mr Bubbles would guard the jugs, standing silently over them as Ms Bubbles followed her closely so that the dimming torch light would illuminate the small room around her.

The shadows would give nothing much away. Old ruins, mostly, cobwebs covering cracked walls and the sound of dank dripping just off to the left of her. The girl began to prod at the walls, cracked as they were, it didn’t take much to let the rubble drop down around her feet. There would be nothing achieved in this method, rubble fell down sending dust up in the air. But with the receding air meant the dust sat longer, falling slowly towards the floor and sitting over Yumi and Ms Bubbles. The first few cracks showed nothing much, except another wall behind that - signs that the room wasn’t completely abandoned as first thought. There was some preservation at least.

The third wall Yumi examined, however, wouldn’t be barren in her attempts… the sound of rubble falling would be the same as before except this time… the sound of metal clinking in the wall. Further inspection would show a circular tap embedded into the wall behind the rubble where Yumi had prodded. Not the jug she thought she was looking for, but something nonetheless.

Would she twist it? Or would she continue to search in the ever growing darkness for what she thought she was looking for?

Prodding the nearby walls didn’t come without cost to Yumi, seeing as how she and Ms. Bubbles were now covered in dust. Still, she would rather have this outcome than death. She could handle a little dust and it wasn’t like she hadn’t gotten dirty before. Managing her puppets tended to leave her covered in oil and other substances so she was used to moments where she wasn't clean. Thankfully the young puppeteer didn’t have to deal with too much more dust as a circular tap soon revealed itself. As for why it was hidden behind crumbling rumble, she had no idea. Still, she had found another clue so she wouldn't complain. Normally she would turn it to see what would happen, but she decided against it. She needed to finish exploring, and if the tap somehow released something like poisonous gas, she would no longer have that option. No need to take unnecessary risks after all.

Yumi would spend the next few moments doing what she had been doing but for the entire room. If she didn’t find anything, she would go back to where the tap was and have Ms. Bubbles give it a twist. All while standing several feet back just in case something disastrous happened. You could never be too certain in these types of situations.

Searchy search! But searchy search did nothing except reveal dead spiders and old cobwebs, some rubble littering the floor like no ones business. But nothing except the tap and the already collected jugs seemed to reveal itself, despite Yumi's continued prodding and poking. Time was a wastin', so Yumi took the plunge...

Or rather, Ms Bubbles did with Yumi stood at a safe distance away from the tap. Just in case. Smart, precautions in life were necessary. In this instance the tap would turn and seemingly nothing would happen. For a time. And then, slowly, the stillness of the room - the disquiet of the lack of air - was replaced slowly by the sound of rumbling. From underneath the entire room, something shot underneath the floor. The old walls where Yumi had not pulled away shook too, dust and dirt and rocks falling to the floor as the side of a metal pipe revealed itself. Something was building in the metal pipe, the pressure from the tap not being pulled for years by the looks of it.

Water erupted from the pipe, violently at first, as if for the years it had sat dormant - like a volcano - demanded the catch up. It would collide straight into Ms Bubbles... hopefully she was waterproof! But after a few seconds, a reasonable few moments for the water pressure, the pressure seemed to lessen until the water flowed steadily but less violently. It poured out healthily, but hardly at an alarming rate as it would have been if the pressure had continued so violently.

But nothing else would happen! No new walls would move and open into a new room, no secret passageway would be revealed! What could Yumi do with her jugs and the water pouring onto the floor and making the dust sticky?
