It had to start raining on her way back to the apartment. Had there even been a call for rain? Much less, a downpour? This time of the year rain was somewhat of a rarity. But here Kyoko found herself, rushing down the street with a box heavy enough to be aggravating. It was filled with a ton of fertilized dirt and a dozen plants--all seedlings, which she planned to add to her garden at home.

Only downside to carrying a box that big was that she couldn't right her balance very quick. So when she turned the corner on the main road, there was no way to stop the impending collision with the person standing there. A lapse in judgment, really. She could've walked slower. And should have been. But she was in a hurry.

The box toppled over and three of the plants fell out. Kyoko's first word was a quick, "Sorry," followed by her eyes snapping up to see just who she'd run into.

Oh. The hanchou. Well wasn't that poor luck. What Kyoko registered more than his title was his last name. And suddenly, she didn't feel so bad. "Less sorry," she tacked on, practically a mumble, before kneeling down to gather up her new purchases. The plants wouldn't be hurt by a little rain but she didn't want to be dealing with people any more than she already had today. Her mood was shit and hanging around this guy would only make it worse.

"Hmm." He couldn't particularly parse what kind of plant he was looking at. Bush? Flower? Ah, no. He'd pull it higher up, dirt dangling off a rather large bulb beneath it. Onion.

Having managed to catch the falling plant, he'd turn his gaze down at the woman - or girl? - attempting to clean up her odd mix and mess of flora. It had caught him by mild surprise. Age is not always kind.

"No worry." he'd reply, continuing to stare at the onion with a slight look of amusement. His voice had little tone to read, bearing a distinct lack of enthusiasm. "I do recommend carrying less, next time." His gaze would slip onto her, almost through her.

"Satori, no?" The family resemblance was frank - although her features were far softer than her brothers. Less monstrous. He'd hand her back the dangling plant, dusting his chest of the remains of dirt.

Kyoko gathered up the escaped plants, hesitating a moment as the last one was held out to her. He'd been quicker. No surprise there. But she hadn't expected--nor needed--his help. "Thanks." While the Tantetsu didn't make it clear whether or not he'd noticed her poor opinion of him, he took the chance to "recommend" she carry less in the future. Kyoko couldn't tell if he was being sincere or just tossing out thinly-veiled mockery. She defaulted to the latter.

"Noted," she grumbled out, getting to her feet. Balancing the box while straightening herself out was a struggle but she managed. It was somehow top-heavy even with the layer of dirt at the bottom.

Kyoko was about to turn to leave, but he spoke again--her last name. He recognized her? Did he know her face from a file? Or from her brother? No one else in the family had a shinobi background...

"Yeah," she confirmed, eyes narrowing. "You need something? Or maybe it's my brother you want?" Maybe he'd just guessed? Who knew. Being siblings there were little similarities in their appearances--though it took a sharp eye to notice. Kyoko dyed her hair and her style definitely wasn't shared by Akira, so from any distance it was hard to tell they were related. Of course, standing side by side, anyone watching them throw jabs back and forth would know instantly they shared blood.

A light shake of his head - lips sealed shut. He didn’t have any particular motives or concerns, their meeting having been little more that circumstance. Besides that, she wasn’t in his immediate jurisdiction.

Chūnin are always interesting, at least. An errant thought. Still holding some kind of misplaced hope.

"Mm, no. Just a passing resemblance, nothing more.” He’d wave a hand as if to illustrate his point, gesturing slightly at her now reorganized pile of fauna. "Although the botany, I didn’t expect.”

A large part of the man considered leaving, small talk not being a courtesy he was often fond of with...

Well, his day was free. "I assumed that Satori wasn’t one for keeping things alive near him.” His tone was cheerful, a faintly cracked smile for the coarse words.

"But of course, I shouldn’t judge the sibling based on theirs.” He’d turn slightly, offering his arm outwards. "Do you want help?”

Kyoko would've been surprised he didn't know of her family's trade if it weren't for the fact they were civilians. Their craft flew under the radar for most who didn't know them personally. If they'd been shinobi historically, it probably would've made it onto a page in some file somewhere.

"Life's full of surprises," she said dryly, not all that interested in what his expectations for her had been. She was more interested in keeping out of the rain--which she wasn't doing by standing out here yapping.

Her pressing need to leave, though, morphed into a more firm press of her feet against the dirt with the Tantetsu's jab about her brother. "Wasn't one for keeping things alive near him"? Her eyes narrowed, a sharp glare shot back at his smile. This man liked pushing buttons.

And then, an offer of help? She scoffed. "From you? No. Your blood helped my family enough." She shifted her feet, turning her body away from him some as if she meant to leave. "Say what you want about my brother. At least he can keep a conversation from dying. Fuck off."

She turned on her heel and made for home. If her mood hadn't already been poor it definitely was now. She could only assume the hanchou's remark had been in reference to Akira's teammates's deaths--and by his hand, no less. To point it out like it was some kind of joke? What a jackass.

She'd hardly be in any mood to put the new seedlings in when she got back.

His response would come in the form of a short laugh, a complete dismissal of the girl's rather aggressive reproach to his offer. "You're not wrong. Toshu has always been on the slower side." Whether or not it'd stop her from stomping off, he didn't know, or particularly care.

But it was the beginning of an idea - however small it was.

"The only thing I have to say about your brother, Satori - " he'd pause for a moment, seeing if he could catch her attention. "Is that he needs help. You can choose to believe whether or not I'm offering it, but what you believe won't change the truth."

Neither would his, frankly. With a turn on his heel, he'd start off in the opposite direction. If she stopped him, he'd have a chat. If not, he had other places to be. Nothing is lost if there's nothing to gain in the first place. Blood can't always be drawn from a stone.

      -END?-
