round 3 - - fight 1

It was finally here; the last round of the chuunin exams. Kashiwa did his all to contain both excitement and regret, yet the feelings managed to seep their way into his headspace regardless. His attempts at some makeshift form of meditation were meaningless as the excitable genin surrounding him bounced in their seats and cheered at each passing fight. He recognized a few faces, Ichi and Okingshi to name a couple, but he was mostly focused on the battleground before him.

Each fight he watched intently, observing the tactics and methods of his fellow genin as they fought. He had the luxury of going relatively late in the order, third to last, and thus had plenty of study material. How could he incorporate the ring around the edge? Maybe he could scale the walls and fight from there? There was a lot of potential but Kashiwa needed to make full use of every advantage.

The last two rounds had been suited to his strengths and he'd performed accordingly. But one-on-one combat was probably his weakest area, at least when compared to the caliber of talent at these exams. He might have been better off waiting a year, training up some more jutsu and going on some more missions. But it was too late for that; he was here now. He pinched his leg to bring his attention back to the present just in time for his name to be called.

He spotted his opponent as soon as he exited the large door that exited out into the arena, catching her from across the field as she did the same. It was the mummy-looking girl from his group in the first round. And after Haruka and Jou had to fight each other as well. Though it was probably a logistical impossibility to avoid those types of match ups. He regretted to say he didn't actually know much about her abilities. She'd used a clone and seemed pretty physically fit from what he could remember.

He kept his eyes forward, focused on her, as he joined her in the center of the arena, standing about eight meters apart; a comfortable distance but still within talking range. "It's good to see you again, Kei." His tone was serious and determined but there was a genuine kindness behind his words. "Good luck."

As soon as the proctor's hand fell Kashiwa would jump back, pulling his bow from his back and an arrow from its home. Fingers ran across thin lengths of wood to check their smoothness before he brought the arrow to meet the side of his bow, curling his fingers around the fletching and nocking it. He'd wait the shortest beat, allowing a bit of his chakra to flow from his fingertips to the arrow in hand, before releasing.

It would likely miss. Shinobi were trained to dodge projectiles, right? Anyway, Kashiwa expected it to miss and accounted for it. His left hand fell, bow in hand, and his right followed the arrow, fingers splaying in a tight circle in the direction of the projectile. If the arrow sailed past his target he would manipulate the residual wind chakra in its shaft and direct it to turn, following his target like a heat seeking missile.
