SLEEP NO MORE
A gigantic spider was sighted in the northeastern zone of Nohara no Kuni. Takatō had, for some reason, been assigned to the mission to hunt it down.

Not unusual in concept, given his skill for tracking things down; he didn’t have the necessary skillset for sensory abilities, that was all beyond his ken, but he had two working eyeballs and the ability to use them. He had the vague thought that even a genin should be able to find a giant spider if it was roaming around the countryside, but then he supposed that a genin would be hard-pressed to fight the thing off even if they did manage to find it. At least Takatō would be able to find it fast, and take care of himself.

Theoretically.

Takatō had received his orders to meet up with his mission partner in Shōwa, the closest village to where the spider had been sighted. There was a small branch of the Kisei teahouses in Shōwa, of course, so Taka arrived early with the express purpose of acquiring two takeaway cups: a rich, robust black coffee for himself, and a more mild black tea for his companion. Once acquired, he waited patiently near the northeastern exit out of town, towards the border of Bonchi no Kuni.

His mission partner was to be Lord Hisakawa, apparently, which seemed odd, but Taka didn’t know the man well; just that he was kind of weird, and he had no earthly idea why he’d been named Kusa Lord. Nothing against him; there’d just been no one better, apparently? An uncomfortable situation all around.

Taka put the takeaway cups down on the flat top of a nearby stone fence, ensuring they were stable before he took out two blank sealing tags and began inscribing explosive notes. No point in wasting time while he waited.

Giant. Enemy. Spider

Despite holding the highest possible office in Kusagakure's shinobi hierarchy, Yamato was far from being a peak shinobi. It wasn't fitting of a ninja leader to completely lack growth, so there was the rare occasion where he felt it appropriate to embark on a more dangerous mission, at least still within Nohara no Kuni's borders.

This particular mission involved hunting down a giant spider. Thankfully it hadn't run into any villages or outposts, but the sooner they killed it, the sooner people could rest easy. Yamato had hastily made his way to Showa to meet up with his partner for the mission. He knew where their designated meeting point was, and as he approached his sensory abilities confirmed that Takato had gotten them well before he had. With is signature purple book in hand, Yamato bounded up to meet his ANBU subordinate, a soft smile on his face as he gestured ahead.

"Ah, Takato? I hope I didn't keep you waiting for too long, but we should get moving. New intel suggests the spider is looping back towards the east and south, closer to the Hi no Kuni and uhm, potentially towards Nishigo."

While it would be disastrous for the spider to attack a civilian center, letting the spider cross over international borders would also be a political headache. The young lord awkwardly moved to take up the cup that he assumed was his before taking the lead with a light jog back out of the village, though only for a minute or so.

"Erm, I've read in your file that you're quite the tracker? I don't suppose you're catching anything out of place already?"

SLEEP NO MORE
Taka looked up as the Kusa Lord approached. He was struck immediately by how young Lord Hisakawa looked in person like this; he was used to thinking of Kage and Lords in terms of seniority and experience, and had been expecting someone... older? But Lord Hisakawa looked like he was right around Taka's age. It was jarring.

Regardless, he offered a short bow in greeting. "It's no problem," he said. His voice was soft and low, his words liable to get lost in the din of a busy village. "I wasn't waiting long."

Lord Hisakawa took the cup Taka had brought for him. Taka gathered up the two explosive notes he had managed to write in the short time he was waiting and his own takeaway cup before following along in the Lord's wake. Hisakawa was keeping up a light jog, but it wasn't too difficult for Taka to keep up, his own long-legged stride compensating for the quick pace.

He was quiet for a long moment after the question was posed to him, his dark, dull eyes scanning their surroundings as they left the village.

"No webs," he said eventually, scratching the stubble on his jaw. "Haven't seen any, so it's probably a burrowing spider, especially at that size. Should look for holes, caves, turned earth, things like that. Probably no trapdoors if it's moving around, too stationary."

Giant. Enemy. Spider

@all
The young lord fidgeted as he noted the all too familiar signs of someone who hadn't quite come to grips with the idea of someone so unassuming being the head of Nohara no Kuni's shinobi military. Taka did a fairly good job of masking it with respect, giving Yamato some peace of mind as they begun their travel.

Even if there wasn't any immediate physical evidence of the giant spider having come through here, Yamato tilted his head with pleasant acknowledgment on his face. For an expert tracker like Taka, it seemed that a lack of information was itself a way of conveying information. Keeping up a brisk pace, Yamato sipped away at his mild black tea, brows furrowing as he did his best to recall details about the local area. If this spider prefered digging holes or into caves, then it was unlikely the beast had continued any further eastward. He made the call to shift their course more towards the south, and over the course of half an hour or so the terrain shifted from slightly wooded to the more familiar vast, open plains of Nohara no Kuni.

The two shinobi would be able to move at an increased pace now that their beverages were no doubt fully consumed, and with a few more minutes of travel the first signs that Taka had suggested came into view. There was no obvious cave or hole in the immediate vicinity quite yet, but as they continued south they would begin to see strange piles of unearthed soil dotting the landscape. Yamato would slow before coming to a complete stop, awkwardly gesturing for his ANBU companion to do the same.

"Let's... er.. take stock of the situation. I'm pretty sure these small piles of earth aren't natural so it might be beneficial to get a bird's eye view..."

Even as his voice trailed off, Yamato tucked his signature purple tome under his arm, his hands slowly forming a sequence of handseals. At the very end he sharply nipped the tip of his thumb, thrusting his blood onto the ground and creating a puff of smoke. And from that smoke a majestic pigeon leapt forth, fluttering in the air for a moment before perching on Yamato's outstretched palm. [x]

"Kiku! Fly up and find a hole or cave, got it? Hole or cave!"

The pigeon cooed a few times before bobbing its head up and down and taking flight once more, leaving behind a few loose feathers but ultimately moving to presumably follow Yamato's orders. He watched his animal summon soar into the sky for a few moments before turning to Taka, head tilting as he gestured at their general surroundings.

"Is there anything you can glean from these mounds of earth alone? And... where do you suppose the spider is actually going? At the very least it doesn't seem that uhm... it's going into Hi no Kuni."

SLEEP NO MORE

Once they had both finished their drinks, Takatou held his hand out for Lord Hisakawa’s cup, and upon receiving it, would tuck it away in his bag right alongside his specialty coffee. The cups were throwaway, yes, but it wasn’t as if there were any trash bins out in the wilds of Nohara no Kuni, and he had grown up around too many Nakahara to be comfortable with disrespecting the earth beneath his feet.

Their pace quickened, until it stopped. Soil.

Taka watched with quiet interest at the summoning process. The pigeon was a small grey-and-black creature, but what drew Taka’s eye was the gradient of almost iridescent green and blue feathers ringed around her neck.

Lord Hisakawa gave his orders, and Taka watched the bird fly up and away.

"She’s pretty,” he said, crouching down to retrieve one of her fallen feathers. "I like the bit ‘round her neck.”

The feather went into his bag as well, carefully stowed as Lord Hisakawa asked his questions. Taka made a soft noise of acknowledgement—better than just not saying anything, probably, he didn’t want the Lord to think he was ignoring him, but it wasn’t like he’d have an answer until he… had an answer.

Taka crouched down beside one of the piles of disturbed earth. Visually it wasn’t especially interesting, so he got his hands in there, feeling the soil between his fingers, searching for anything hidden in the dirt. He didn’t find anything, so he moved onto the next, and when the results were the same, he searched a third.

"Not Hi no Kuni,” he said, bracing himself on his knees as he carefully sorted through upturned earth and foliage. "We started moving…” he squinted up at the sky. "... south? It’s not going east…towards Tsuchi, maybe, if it wants a cave—oh, here.”

Taka stood up, producing a single long, thick strand of what looked like rigid hair from the pile of earth. It was massive, nearly as long as his forearm, and his tired expression very nearly seemed pleased.

"It was digging,” he said. "...I think. Looking for a place to shelter, maybe, but the earth was dense, not easy to get through, so it moved on. This hair is probably from a front leg.”

Yamato beamed when Takato commented on the bird. Most people believed pigeons to be pests, but he was glad that he had met yet another who saw the beauty of this particular type of bird. At least, he was reasonably sure that Takato was being genuine. More importantly, the young lord watched curiously as the ANBU operative presented his craft, remaining silent at first, but speaking in more bits and pieces as he gathered information from their surroundings. It was quite fascinating to Yamato, seeing expertise in a skill he lacked, and he beamed yet again when Takato came to another important conclusion.

"Digging? That makes sense. Your earlier theory seems to be spot on."

Almost as if on cue, Kiko returned to Yamato at that moment, fluttering to a stop and resting on his hastily presented finger.

"Hole. South. Big hole. Smell."

Between Kiku's report and Takato's analysis, Yamato was reasonably sure that if the two shinobi continued south, they would finally encounter this supposed giant spider, and he gave the bird gentle nod before dismissing her in another puff of smoke.

"Well... it looks like we've got our heading. Let's uhm... not waste any time, but also remain cautious."

More obvious words couldn't have been said as Yamato took the lead once more, dashing in the direction Kiku had returned from. As expected, it wasn't long before a massive, deep hole in the ground greeted the two shinobi, causing Yamato to come to a tentative stop a few dozen meters away. It didn't seem as if though the spider was right below the surface or in their immediate area on the surface, at least for now, and with a slight look of worry Yamato turned to his subordinate.

"Can you tell if the spider's in that hole right now? Or if it's currently out and about?"

SLEEP NO MORE

Lord Hisakawa could in fact be quite certain that Takatō was being genuine; the sad, honest truth was that lying, or soft social niceties that lived down the street from lies, were rarely something he was able to summon the willpower to deliver.
The pigeon came back with her report, which Lord Hisakawa received graciously before the bird vanished, smoke spiraling up into the air. The Kusa Lord gave instruction and took the lead, Takatō following close behind.

The hole was… large. Taka had expected something oversized, considering the reports of spider sightings and the length of the leg hair, but this thing was huge, and the hole went deeper than Taka could have possibly anticipated. He squinted at it, trying to get a good look.

"Dunno,” he said, and surveyed his immediate area. The creature would be sensitive to any tremor in the ground, no matter how lightly he took his steps; he didn’t want to risk getting any closer in the event that it was home. "Uh… here.”

He pulled a sealing tag and a kunai out from his belt, clenching the kunai between his teeth as he also pulled out a small brush and quickly wrote a small seal, giving the ink a moment to dry before pressing two fingers against the paper and pushing a small amount of chakra into it. Some of the still-wet ink bled, dripping down the length of the paper and forming into the kanji for 700.

Satisfied, Taka tied the seal off onto the end of his kunai, and held it out for Lord Hisakawa to inspect.

"Tremors,” Taka said. "Lure it out if it’s home, lure it back if it’s not. Good?”

Partially it was that he was working with the Kusa Lord, but just in general—unless it was a dire circumstance, he wasn’t going to make a move like that without checking with his teammates first.

Giant. Enemy. Spider

The young lord did his best to hide his disappointment when Takato couldn't give a definite answer as to whether the spider was in its burrow or out and about, but he did note that Taka seemed to step more carefully as they approached and so he mirrored the movements. He watched with awe and appreciation as the ANBU operative deftly created a seal and attached it to a kunai, offering his subordinate an enthusiastic thumbs up for a seal well done.

"An excellent plan if I do say so myself. Though I'd like to make one addition of my own."

Yamato reached into one of his hip pouches and withdrew a stack of tags, tags which Takato would immediately recognize as explosive tags. Stepping gingerly, Yamato placed the 20 tags around the entrance to the burrow, spacing them out evenly to cover all the angles. The resulting array wasn't as tightly clumped as Yamato would have liked for dealing with a giant spider, but it would do for now. Throughout the whole process, Yamato kept his guard up, pausing every so often to see if a spider would come out of the ground, thankfully, one didn't. He returned to Takato's side, admiring his handiwork for a few moments before tilting his head in thought.

"Though... if it's in the burrow, I'm not too keen on going in myself. I don't suppose you've got a long range clone technique?"

His tone was friendly, but there was a slight wince on his face. If he were a better shinobi he would have taken the time to learn the shadow clone technique by now, a staple of any competent ninja, but... well there was no but, he took a mental note to prioritize learning that as soon as possible.

Lord Hisakawa was doing an admirable job of concealing it, but Taka was both too observant and too familiar with the feeling of being a disappointment to not recognize the feeling when he saw it. It was a fair thing; he wished he could have provided more information, but that was all he could muster. His approval of the plan seemed genuine, though, which was something of a relief.

He watched as the Kusa Lord staged his sealing tags around the burrow, noting with no small amount of admiration how evenly spaced they were, how perfectly covered each angle was. When he came back, however, he had a question that Taka had only another disappointing answer to:

"... No,” he said softly. He… really should have learned it by this point, but his attentions always seemed to lead him elsewhere. He made a mental note—when they returned back to the village, he really should focus on learning that technique.

After a moment of reflective, chagrined silence, Taka followed up with a simple: "I’ll go in.” Lord Hisakawa’s life was objectively more valuable than his own; and based on the pace they’d taken to get here, Taka was fairly certain that he was quicker on his feet. He was adept at close-range; Lord Hisakawa was a long-distance preparation fighter. It seemed sensible.

Once the Kusa Lord gave the okay, Taka would shuffle back slightly, gripping his prepared kunai tight in his hand. Rather than aiming it directly at the burrow, however, he aimed at a sharp, high angle towards the sky, and sent the weapon flying. At the apex of its arc, he formed a single handseal; and all seven hundred pounds attached to that kunai came hurtling back down to the earth with a resounding crash.

Honō Mako Avatar

Mako had originally been assigned to cleanup of the massive spider that had been spotted in the Northeastern area of Nohara no Kuni. It had been assumed that the Lord Hisakawa and the shinobi that had been sent with him would be more than enough to handle the spider itself, but the cleanup of such a massive body and the creature's potential nest was expected to be another job entirely. The young Hono didn’t want to miss an opportunity to see such a massive spider in action though, so he had left incredibly early with hopes of watching the fight between two shinobi and a massive frickin spider.

Once he had arrived in the small village of Shōwa, Mako would make the necessary hand signs before biting his thumb and summoning Hanatarō who had excellent tracking capabilities. Without much fanfare, he’d crouch down to be almost at the young lion’s level to explain things. "Hey there buddy, I’m trying to find Lord Hisakawa and his friend. They’re supposed to be fighting a giant spider somewhere around here. Once we get close you’re gonna have to go home though, the spider is probably incredibly dangerous.” Hanatarō would give a quick nod as he smelled the air and pointed in the direction that the two had left the village.

Mako would quickly pick up Hanatarō under one arm, and start racing off in the direction that he’d just been pointed in by the young cat. By the time he started approaching the area he’d spot a glint of metal being thrown into the air, before looking down at Hanatarō who would give a nod confirming that they had indeed made it to the correct place. Once the cub disappeared in a puff of smoke, the young shinobi would move at a moderate pace, hiding behind the occasional tree or in some tall grass in an attempt to remain unspotted. He would just barely get within eyesight of the massive hole in the ground before the Kunai crashed loudly into the ground.

While the crash itself had definitely startled Mako, it was what happened next that caught both him and Yamato off guard. A massive eight legged creature sprung out of the massive hole with inhuman speed. It locked onto Lord Hisakawa immediately and smacked him back with a single leg. The event itself seemed to have knocked Lord Hisakawa unconscious and forced Mako to make a quick split second decision. Did he wait things out or play the hero on a mission he wasn’t even supposed to be on? Screw it, he thought. With a single hand sign, he quickly utilized the Shunshin technique to jump to Lord Hisakawa’s side and say, "Yoink,” out loud as he picked up the limp body and started back-tracking away from the spider.

The spider, who didn’t want to lose his snack, quickly started going on the offensive and chasing the young shinobi further away from his hole. Given the predicament he was in Mako would shout as he scrambled to duck, dip, dive, and dodge the spider's massive legs and pincers to avoid becoming lunch, "OOOOHHH GOD! PLEASE GET HIM OFF ME! PLEASE AND THANK YOU!” If he could just get a moment's reprieve to set the body weighing him down onto the ground away from the spider it’d be so much easier to give a helping hand; but setting him down right now would practically be the same as sacrificing him to become an appetizer.

SLEEP NO MORE

Everything was going according to plan—until it wasn’t. The spider was even larger than Taka had estimated it would be, and it moved at truly frightening speeds, tearing out of its den with a righteous fury and sending Lord Hiskawa flying with a single smack.

Taka started to race towards the Kusa Lord, but before he could get there, another shinobi suddenly appeared on the scene—a young man with a head of vibrant hair that Taka was extremely thankful to see right at that moment. He wasn’t quite sure who the man was, but he wore a Kusagakure headband and had just saved Lord Hisakawa’s life, and so he had won Taka’s immediate and eternal loyalty.

Pushing back the buzzing anxiety in his mind, Taka sprung into action, chasing after the giant spider that was chasing after the newcomer and Lord Hiskawa. He pulled out one of the explosive notes he had prepped before he and the Kusa Lord had embarked out into the wilds, and pushed himself to catch up with the spider for the barest second he needed to slap the tag on one of the spider’s long, densely furred legs.

"Take cover!” he called to his new teammate, and bounced back to give himself enough clearance without moving too far away from the spider. Once he saw that the other man and Lord Hisakawa were far enough from the blast radius, he would form a single handseal to set off the tag—a blast that would surely be enough to cripple the creature’s leg and slow it down enough to give the other man some breathing room.

"I'll settle this.”

The gentle murmur of a new voice rung out. The sight of the giant spider was the stuff of nightmares, and Yusei was greeted by seeing another shinobi run. Furthermore, the young lord of Kusakagure was nowhere to be seen. Eaten, maybe? In either case, a new face entered the fray. Yusei's off-white hair stood out all the more. He wore his navy-blue jumpsuit, Kusakagure headband hanging off his neck like a bandanna. He was already covered in sweat, having ran here in time to watch the fireworks.

"...Nice to meet you. I'm Jūryoku Yusei."

He said with a smirk, giving the taller man a gentle clap on the back with an open palm. Reinforcements have arrived indeed. The explosive tag's blast rung out, leaving a trail of smoke and a small wave rippling through the grass.

As much as the three of them were in danger, it's like his body was moving before his brain could. Yusei stepped aside, planting his feet firmly on the ground. His hands clasped together, before forging seals. Tiger. Snake. Dog. The spider's legs trampled the ground quickly, like fingers on a typewriter. But as the explosive tag went off, it flinched and stood at a canted angle.

Yusei held his hands in a triangle shape, aimed at the stationary leg already burned by the blast. A bolt of lightning rung out from between his palms, crackling as it rippled through the open air. He'd hoped to intensify the burn left behind by the tag, and perhaps give the spider pause.

Another voice joined the chaos. Sweat trickled down the nape of Taka’s neck as he exhaled a quiet sigh of relief: the backup was truly timely, and desperately needed. The hand gently clapping against his back was the most comforting touch he’d had all day.

"Takatō,” he replied, the corner of his mouth tugging into the barest hint of a smile. "Thanks.”

His explosive tag hobbled one of the spider’s legs, and was quickly followed up with Yusei’s raiton technique, the lightning crackling in a light-show arc through the air. The scent of ozone and burned hair filled Taka’s nostrils, and nothing had ever smelled so sweet.

The spider made an odd keening noise as the jutsu made contact, stumbling in place as it lost its balance. Mako and Lord Hisakawa were long gone by this point—fled back to the village, no doubt, in search of safety and medical attention. That in itself was a relief, but there was still this massive spider to handle, and it was furious.

"I’m going to try to take out the rest of the rear legs,” he said to Yusei. "Explosive tags at the joints.”

Plan relayed, Taka kept his explosive notes in hand and formed a single handseal, flash-stepping to close the distance towards the great beast—attempting to apply the explosive tags to the creature’s uninjured limbs, though he was chagrined to realize that he had to dedicate most of his efforts to ducking and weaving to avoid its wildly thrashing legs.

He managed to land a strike with a single explosive note on the leg opposite its injured one, and twisted in place to circle around towards the significantly more dangerous end of the spider: the front, which held the threat of deadly teeth but also was clear from the forthcoming explosion.

"Clear!” he shouted, and set off the tag.

"Take out its legs, and I'll work the head.”

Takato's array of explosives gave Yusei an idea. One of several, really. One seemed especially risky, and he'd have to wait for a chance to pounce. The young lord was again, nowhere to be found. He watched the spider bend, falling a little on its weaker legs.

In either case, Takato went about rushing in, affixing tags to the other rear legs of the spider. As he wove through the legs, he dodged thrashing legs and took these opportunities to tag them. He stood at the front of the spider, using a handseal to set them all off.

A blast of fire rung out, followed by a wave of wind rattling the grass. With the spider reeling, it thrashed more with its front legs, like a bug stepped on but not all the way squashed. Yusei ran up, attempting to use the tree-climbing technique. He ran along the side of the most limp leg, trying to scale the thing.

Like any spider, there was a sheen-y exoskeleton. Thin enough to be rocked by explosives, but nonetheless this inspired Yusei. He walked calmly up to the head of the spider, and held his right hand up. in the air. While the average chakra network when visible was blue, an off-white vein trailed from his shoulder to his arm. He put his hand down on its head, and "pulled" its insides, trying to squeeze something against the top of its head.

SLEEP NO MORE

The explosives went off, the spider went limp, and it was at this moment that Taka realized his newfound ally was an absolute madman. Yusei scaled the spider like it was no more imposing than a large boulder; he darted up to its head, above where Taka was standing, and performed some complex-looking ninjutsu technique that had the spider screeching and writhing in pain. It was a horrifying sight, staring down the mandibles of the beast, but he felt a spark of guilt in his chest: it was just an animal at the end of the day, and they were taking too long to put it down. It was in pain.

Unfortunately, the torment was not likely to end any time soon.

With its legs blown out and whatever Yusei was doing to its head in progress, Taka took advantage of its distraction to fire up his fingertip with a flare of chakra, thrusting his hand forward to roughly carve the kanji for five hundred pounds into the surface of the creature’s exoskeleton. He worked as quickly as he could, and he succeeded in completing the seal—but at the cost of earning gnashing mandibles around his forearm, shredding the flesh to ribbons as he bit back a howl of pain and ripped himself away from the creature’s mouth, fleeing the danger zone.

The necessary handseal was difficult to form: his fingers were bloodied, a pulpy mess, and he panted with the effort of contorting them into the necessary configuration. Once complete, however, a five-hundred pound weight would drag the spider’s head down, opposite whatever force was pulling the creature’s head up as part of Yusei’s ninjutsu.

NAME: Shikoku Fuuin - [Finger Engraving Seal]
RANK: C
CHAKRA USAGE: Low [Continuous]
CLASSIFICATION: Fūinjutsu
ELEMENT: N/a
DESCRIPTION:
Chakra is released into the tip of one's finger, increasing its temperature as a small flame-like discharge is generated. This allows one to write upon almost any surface and leave a scar-like mark, working to inscribe the formula of seals or write messages if a writing utensil is not readily available.

NAME: Oshiishi [Stone Weight]
RANK: B
CHAKRA USAGE: Low to Very High
CLASSIFICATION: Fūinjutsu
DESCRIPTION:
An advanced version of Senkin that can be used in an offensive manner. One that requires the user to write the specific seal and weight in kanji upon the object or person of their desire. Weight is variable, anywhere from a few pounds to a ton. When placed on a persons clothes, it is possible for those to crush that person or simply render them immobile. It can also be used as an incarceration technique, if placed on the skin it will not crush but simply render immobile. The seal can be broken with a specific burst of chakra into the seal, much like water and wall walking. Though this naturally requires some knowledge on the art of Fūinjutsu [spec or SA]. The variable weight of the jutsu will increase the cost the greater the variable.
