Many of the others were sleeping to recover their strength from previous activities or were standing watch nearby. He wasn’t a sensor, so he didn’t officially have a turn on watch since so many of them were. Hotaru instead spent his time trying to come up with plans and strategies to grow the influence and numbers of the organization.

Anything that he could think of lay out in basic sketches in his tent, but his brain was tired and he wanted to expend some energy. Being an on-again, off-again shinobi had put him behind in his proficiency levels. Although he’d been a prodigy as a child, he was nearing the age where most people his age were at the level of jounin. There was a lot of catching up to do if he wanted to make sure that he wasn’t an easy target.

He stepped away from the camp a few hundred meters into a little training area they’d designed in a circular clearing. His goal today was to practice reviving a heart. Although this wasn’t exactly the best place for practicing medicine, brushing up on his skills was essential.

Hotaru rolled out the large scroll that he carried on his back onto the forest floor. He began making a series of hand seals and the black symbols on the scroll began to fade, in their place a corpse emerged from the scroll. It was still fresh, a bandit with dark black hair like his own. Though they weren’t exactly identical, the white robes they wore covered up much of the difference and minor surgical modifications the rest.

He began by exposing the chest of the corpse. The smell of death grew stronger then, but only the early stages of decomposing had begun and had been mostly halted through his work on it. Taking a deep breath out, he cracked his knuckles and then brought his hand forward. Chakra flooded into his hand as he channeled the chakra scalpel technique. There was enough concentration that a faint azure light rippled around it.

He ran his fingers slowly across the sternum and a thick crimson line formed. The blood pooled up but didn’t flow, for it wasn’t fresh and the heart within did not beat. It was Hotaru’s goal to rectify that, although he knew there was no coming back for this person.
