The Devil That You Forgot

Knowledge

The Kumogakure library was an old and expansive building carved directly into one of the mountains that made up the village and with new rooms hollowed out with the use of doton each time the building needed more space. The upper floors where those with open access to civilians, academy students, and genin. With the lower levels reserved for those scrolls and books with more restricted access that required the rank of chuunin and up or other select special positions. What Azarea sought within those beloved bowels however was not a scroll, nor an ancient crumbling manual of techniques. It wasn't even a novel or other item of particular interest to most individuals.

In fact the woman beelined instead for probably the lost little used and least loved section of the library, the Filing Department. Where various applications, document outlines, and bureaucratic guides lay in wait to be copied and utilized to torture those poor souls in positions of political power. A resource more often employed by the villages civilians then their shinobi, but in this horridly dry diatrades of drivel Azarea sought one. specific. target. An application and set of rules that should she succeed in applying properly would make her life, and work, now that she was no longer under the headship of Riku, far far easier.

Azarea was looking for the Kumogakure Notary Application.

The Devil That You Forgot

Is

Flicking through the various files it took Azarea nearly half and hour to find both the application, and the requirements guide for filling out and submitting said application. She had however, come prepared, and reading down the list of qualifications she found to her relief she'd met all the basics. In order to file to become a notary one needed to have been in residence within Kumo for five years and have proof of such and thankfully Azarea had kept her old apartment statements from back in the day. In addition one needed to have proof of citizenship and employment within the village. Not a difficult thing for her to prove with her Kumo headband and her ninja identification. Then there was just the matter of the fee. The price of which made her wince, but with the recent mission payments she'd raked in from B-ranks she could pay the piper here and not put even a dent in her hobby funds for the next couple months.

Besides if she didn't find something to occupy herself while she was on mandatory downtime she'd go stir crazy. She'd never done well being idle. It was after all half the reason Riku had given her a desk job. Lest the try and chew her way out of a hospital room or go nuts with boredom. The need to be at least mentally engaged if not physically a driving part of her nature she'd never entirely understood, but couldn't deny. Maybe it was a Hatake thing? That feral energetic nature combining in the worst ways with the Aburame drive towards hard work.

Or maybe it was just Azarea herself. Either way it wasn't as if she had a relative she could sit down and ask. So unable to investigate further she simply pushed such matters from her mind.

Taking the application to one of the copying alcoves she carefully placed it down onto a fuinjutsu covered stone before setting a blank piece of paper on the other tablet beside it and fed it a smidge of chakra. The fuinjutsu lighting up as the text was copied over to the blank piece of paper leaving Azarea to return to file the original application. That done she set about getting her qualifications in order before approaching the Librarian at her desk. The woman an elderly Kunoichi missing an eye and with a prosthetic leg. Her face heavy with lines and hair having gone white with age as she observed Azarea's approach with her own good eye.

"Can I help you?" The Librarian questioned in a tone that stated she'd really rather do anything else as Azarea borrowed a pen and filled out her application before passing it to the woman. "I'd like to apply to take the Kumogakure no Sato Notary exam please." She requested waiting patiently as the woman flipped through her paperwork and checked her proffered headband and Shinobi ID for authenticity. When nothing comes up amiss the woman grumbles and grunts as she leverages herself up off her chair and pads back through the door behind her into the other room. Azarea getting just a glimpse of stacks of filing cabinets before the door closes and she is left to wait.

And

Thankfully Azarea is not left waiting long as the woman returns with ten sheaf's of paper stapled together and a scowl as she returns to her seat. "Payment please." She croaks out holding out her hand as Azarea digs for her wallet. Pulling out the little fabric beetle purse as she counts out the proper stack of notes mourning their loss, but reminding herself they would purchase for her opportunities for better gains. The old woman takes her time counting the money ensuring it's all there before she hands Azarea the papers and a pen and points to a desk and chair right across from here in plain sight.

"Sit facing me. Do not cheat. Cheating will see you permanently disqualified from taking the test again and no there is no underneath the underneath. Do. Not. Cheat." The woman states firmly because apparently there was an issue with paranoid shinobi believing the test in and of itself was a test instead of simply a basic quiz on Kumogakure no Sato's laws and legal regulations. Something Azarea could understand as she offered the woman a nod and took a seat facing her. Her hands in clear view as she flipped the test over and stared down at the first page with interest. At least the whole thing wasn't timed, but she didn't doubt that if she was too slow she would be judge and too fast she'd be considered ignorant.

The test was not easy, but nor was it the most difficult. If the questions could be described in a single word Azarea would have picked the term 'dry.' The technical know how of the villages bureaucratic process something rarely studied by shinobi who didn't intend to be career genin or civilian council members. However her time under Riku had taught her enough that Azarea found herself skirting over the questions without major difficulty. The trickiest part was to watch for the wording and make sure everything was done to the letter. The written portion mostly pertaining to writing out the oath of witness every notary was expected to know and take and in no time at all the red head was rising from her seat and handing the test back in to the Librarian.

The old woman pulling out some glasses and perching them on the bridge of her nose as she read over Azarea's answers nodding slowly to herself before she pulled out a metal clip imprinting the village seal on the test and filing it away at her desk. "Congratulations. You have passed. Please fill out this certificate and pay the equipment fees." The Librarian recited as she grabbed another sheaf of paper urging Azarea to write down her name as the woman signed her own and stamped it. Leaving the Kunoichi to sigh and count out yet more money to pay for the stamps she'd require for this new position.

"Thank you for your time Ma'am." She murmured not forgetting her manners as the woman waved her off, "You'll see your stamps in the mail in three days time. Don't lose your certificate." The Librarian instructed waving the paper till the ink was dry before proffering it to Azarea who rolled it up and carefully tucked it into her pouch before backing away with a short bow.

The Devil That You Forgot

Corrupts.

Stalking back through the stacks of books Azarea wound her way through the piles and shelves of tomes like a panther. Her fingers reaching out to trail over the spines of the novels and texts as she passed. Her eyes flicking from one title to the next as occasionally she'd snatch down a book like stealing a babe from it's crib and add it to the growing pile in her arms. Law wasn't something many shinobi studied. It was the warfront of politicians and political figures. The battle grounds of rats and snakes, and the righteous, but she'd be a fool to turn away a tool at her disposal.

And right now Kizumi-sama needed a sharp mind to turn to the work of turning pages as much as she needed quick hands that were quicker to catch and kill. Yet the mountain of work ahead of her was steep and eyeing the growing stack Azarea couldn't hold back a sigh. Well better her then Daisuke she supposes. As a Sage apprentice his time was already strapped with training and duties as the Raikage's assistant. If she was going to be stuck in the village for a time she might as well make use of the resources at hand.
