A chilly near cloudless day had graced the citizens of Kumo this day, but it was not one that would be spent at leisure, at least for a chosen few. There was work to be done and progress to be made which left no time like the present. Sora had been assigned a couple new genin and while the team tactics session would come at a later date today had been scheduled for some one on one tutelage. Being the fresh shinobi that they were there was a near limitless amount of subjects he could have chosen for todays lesson, but they had settled on something more practical and essential to shinobi life: the water walking technique.

A stream ran to the right of the six armed man as he awaited his charge to arrive to the training grounds. The current wasn't too strong nor was the water too deep to cause harm should the boy fall in, or rather, when he fell in. There wasn't a person dead or alive the man knew who hadn't dunked themselves at least a few times while learning this jutsu, but to be honest it was the more forgiving of the two considering failing at the other often landed you butt first on hard ground.

Alas, perhaps this one would pick up on the technique quickly allowing them to move onto other things, but that would all be for naught if the boy couldn't figure out how to stick to surfaces or keep himself above water. A shinobi could never be certain what type of environment they would be in at any given moment and these basic techniques were paramount to adapting to said situations. Kaminari no kuni itself was filled with various terrain ranging from mountains to coastline making the need to learn both walking techniques undeniable.

[Natsuo Jokyū]

The weather as Natsuo made his way to a stream was quite unusual for Kumogakure. No clouds in the sky, a chilly breeze flowing. It was definitely a strange occurrence. He'd learned that his sensei was going to be teaching his teammate a technique he needed to learn as well, but he wasn't the type to ask if he could attend. Instead, he'd be nearby, and act as if he was there by chance. It was a good plan, even if Natsuo had a habit of getting lost.

Eventually, the boy found a stream. A good focal point to know where he was. Navigation was all about significant landmarks, after all! He'd make his way up the stream, eventually seeing the familiar face of his new sensei. He hadn't really had time to come up with the reason he'd come yet though. His sensei wasn't the easiest to lie to either. Mostly because the six arms he had creeped Natsuo out a bit. Suddenly, Natsuo was missing his old sensei. 

After a while of debating whether to approach him or abort mission, Natsuo eventually moved towards the man. "Hey sensei, you out for a walk too?" He would ask, trying his best not to give away his real reasons for being here.

[Kyuumu Takame]

Progression is what Takame desired. While he was forced to undergo the stupid ninja structure the village ran under he would do his utmost best to make it as quick as possible to promote and sway away from it. Ranks meant nothing to the inner clan heir when it came to the village's system, but rather using their system to get what he needed to push him further in his clan. So while he did agree to this training session his team leader would be offering him he would only do it to get out of this team as soon as possible. Their meeting point would be the training grounds near a stream. The reason for this location was that Takame would be learning how to perform the water walking jutsu. This would mean he would be infusing chakra onto the soles of his feet and creating a sort of platform for him to walk across the water without submerging himself. Seemed simple enough to the young shinobi. So he didn't think this would be a very long lesson which just meant he could return to the compound and talk to his birds! Upon making it to the training grounds though Takame would find his sensei not alone. Wasn't this supposed to be a one-on-one session and not a team-based one? So why was Natsuo here? Honestly, this immediately put Takame into a bad mood so he owuld approach the two and shout at Natsuo, "What the flying **** are you doing here?" He would then turn to his sensei and ask, "Wasn't this supposed to be a closed training session?" Takame would cross his arms before adding, "Already lying to your students then? Not very honorable of you now is it?" Takame wasn't really that angry at the whole situation, but rather more annoyed, but he did enjoy stirring the pot a bit between people so this was him simply trying to either get a rise of the other two or make them fumble with their words. Fate was a funny thing in that it was difficult to predict and always changing in spite of those who believed certain events were set in stone. A voice calling out to the man, familiar yet not the one he expected, shifted Sora's attention to his other student Natsuo. It was a pleasant surprise and the catalyst for a smart yet potentially damning idea that was sure to not go over very well with who the man was originally supposed to meet up with. "Ah, Natsuo. Not quite, I'm actually--"

Words cut off by the angry mouthing of today's special guest and member of their squad: Takame. The boy was none too pleasant on a good day and seeing Natsuo here was liable to send him over the edge. However, this was not Sora's first rodeo dealing with unruly students and while it was annoying the boy did at least listen and follow orders at the end of the day even if he was grumpy the entire time. "Perfect timing, Takame. Today was supposed to be a solo lesson, yes, but as fate has it neither you or Natsuo here know the water walking technique so why not kill two bir, er, just gonna teach ya both to save time." Sora sometimes forgot about his grumpy little genin's predisposition to birds and it wasn't until recently did he realize just how many bird related phrases there were.

"Doesn't do the squad any good if one of you are lagging behind on the basic techniques, and just maybe a little competition will help you pick up the jutsu faster, and then we can get to the fun stuff. So! Let's get to it." Either of the two could object and not participate if they so chose but that was only going to set them back in the short and long run. He would motion the two to follow him to the edge of the stream before stopping and turning to face them.

"Alright so the important thing about this technique is balance, not necessarily balancing on the water but balancing your chakra so that you can stay on top of it. You'll focus your chakra like you do with any other technique but instead of creating a fireball or blast of wind you'll just coat your feet. Too little chakra and--" Sora would demonstrate by focusing a tiny amount of chakra to his feet and stepping onto the stream with a single foot that promptly fell through. "Now on the opposite hand if you apply too much chakra to your feet you'll either stick yourself to the surface or--" He'd once again demonstrate by channeling quite a bit of chakra to his foot and when he did step on the water it erupted violently beneath him. "--You get that result. But with just the right amount of chakra you'll be able to stand just fine." A final demonstration where Sora would apply a perfect layer of chakra to his soles before stepping onto the surface and standing with no issue.

"Now for starters just try to get a feel for a single foot before stepping on the surface and remember, too little and you'll fall through but too much and you'll make the water too choppy." Sora would instruct to his two young wards. He hoped they'd be able to focus on the task at hand enough to make decent progress but emotional teenagers were unpredictable at best.

[Natsuo Jokyū]

Takame was loud as always, asking the boy why he has here. "What? You don't ever go on a walk? I just happened to be in the area. What are you getting so worked up for anyways? Afraid I'll get a handle on the technique faster than you, the so-called prodigy?" The boy asked, raising an eyebrow at the boy. They hadn't interacted much, but Natsuo could already tell Takame had a superiority complex. So, he was pretty sure that'd hit a nerve. 

Their sensei was much better at deescalating the situation than the Genin. Granted, Natsuo wasn't really interested in trying to calm down his supposed teammate. It wasn't his job, after all. Regardless, Eitama-sensei made good points. If Natsuo was here anyways he might as well learn the technique with Takame. He basically had the whole a squad is only as strong as its weakest link philosophy. Natsuo stepped in once he finished, "Yea, you're here to train, aren't you?" A rhetorical question to continue stirring the pot, whether Natsuo realized he was doing it or not.

Natsuo followed their sensei to the edge of the stream, stopping once the man turned around and began explaining the technique. The most fundamental thing with many jutsu was balance, the water walking technique was no exception. Eitama-sensei demonstrated the ways the technique could go wrong. Too little chakra coating your feet, and you would fall through the water. Too much, and you'd be stuck to the surface, or the water would begin violently erupting under the soles of the user's feet. They would need to use just the right amount to stand on the water as if it was a hard surface. 

"Got it!" Natsuo would say as he heeded the man's instructions, but what amount of chakra should he start with? He started with a rough amount of what he thought it would be, but it was unsurprisingly not enough chakra. He wondered how Takame was starting out as he looked over to the boy.

Natsuo seemed to also have a bark of his own and seemed to think Takame thought highly of himself or something. Just because he was the heir to his part of the clan didn't mean he was super confident in his abilities or anything. Just another reason to dislike his teammate he was always jumping to conclusions and making up false information to fit his narrative. Takame was not the bad guy in this scenario and he wouldn't let Natsuo make him come off as one. "I could care less if you could handle this technique or not just don't go scaring away the birds with that loud mouth of yours!" Takame would cross his arms and glare at the silver-haired teammate of his before listening to his sensei. Takame's anger would spike twice from Sora's statement, especially from the killing of two birds' comment. Sure he caught himself before finishing the line but it crossed his mind and still presented itself to the Kyuumu clan child and the frown on his face deepened further. The frown would then turn into a scowl when Natsuo would speak especially when he antagonized him about them being there to train. He hated that the boy had a point in this matter and simply said, "whatever." His annoyance at the situation was palpable, but he followed along obediently as he felt the sooner they get this over with the sooner he could get away from the two of them. Following the group they would get close to the stream and Sora would begin teaching them about how the water walking technique works. Honestly, since Takame was a genjutsu specialist controlling his chakra was something that came easy for him. Still, it wasn't he was going to risk it all and be overconfident that he could do it on the first try so he took it carefully. Focusing his chakra onto his foot he placed it upon the water and after a slight wiggle to adjust it fully that foot would stabilize pretty quickly. Takame would look over to Natsuo with a slightly smug grin on his face to see if the other boy would be able to keep up with his so-called prodigy as he put it. It was certainly a team full of personalities and thankfully Natsuo was flexible enough to let Takame's crass language roll away like rain off a leaf, though even the nicest of people had their limits so for everyone's sake it was best to get their motivations focused on something else rather than each other. Sora would watch between the two as they took their first attempts at the technique and they went about as well as one could expect given the two's respective backgrounds. Natsuo struggled with finding the correct balance and plunged his foot in the water while Takame --who did have some skill in chakra control-- picked up on things pretty quick.

The reason Sora had started with the water walking technique instead of tree walking was to lessen the chances of injury as a wet foot was better than falling off the side of a tree over and over again. "Not too bad, either of you. While you don't want to over do it don't be skimpy on the chakra, Natsuo, or you'll fall through every time." The man would direct to his eager beaver of a genin before settling his sights on Takame. "You've picked up on how to control your chakra pretty well so go ahead and try standing on the surface with both feet and remember to distribute your chakra evenly or you'll tip over." He would speak to his avian inclined youth.

There was always the possibility with multiple students that one would show a better grasp on a certain subject than the others and there was little doubt that Natsuo was better at something than Takame so all in all things would even out at some point down the line, but that mattered little without first mastering the basics.

[Natsuo Jokyū]

Natsuo gave his teammate the most bewildered look as he told him not to be too loud, "You're louder than me, idiot." He scoffed. Just as his teammate had, Natsuo crossed his arms. They weren't really rivals; their personalities just didn't mix well with each other. The same went with the other of their chaotic trio, none of them got along. At least Sora-sensei wasn't too intolerable. It just always felt like he was coddling them, but that wasn't always a bad thing.

It seemed like both Natsuo and their sensei hit struck a couple nerves with Takame, double team... nice. Regardless, they moved onto the actual learning of the technique. While Natsuo had started falling through at first, he slowly increased his chakra levels until his foot stood firmly on top of the water, just before his sensei had started to give more instructions, "I got it sensei, just had to get to that point first." He gave a small smirk in Takame's direction. They were going through at a fairly similar pace. With one foot firmly on the water, he would await further instructions from Sora-sensei on whether he was clear to go ahead and attempt being on the water with both feet.

Takame rolled his eyes in annoyance at Natsuo and the smirk he gave him it wasn't like what he was doing was hard so why did he need to feel like he had accomplished something so grandiose? Controlling one's chakra was so easy so it wasn't something to write home to mother about. It didn't matter if the other boy completed the jutsu or not he probably would fall in the stream a lot if the single-foot training was evident from it. Sora would tell Takame to attempt to use both feet and to remember to distribute his chakra evenly to which Takame would roll his eyes again. Not adding more words to the mix of angry tension that existed between him and Natsuo since the boy wasn't worth his time he would attempt to do his water walking. Concentrating his chakra into his foot that wasn't on the water he would take a step onto the stream. While it didn't sink or explode upward getting him wet something else happened instead. It was exactly an even chakra he used, but rather angled. So when he stepped forward with the new foot he felt his body almost lunge forward as if he was skating across the water. He was able to stop himself before doing a full split, but his legs were outstretched and it was visible he didn't do it correctly at first. These kids were going to be the start of his hairs going gray with how much they chirped at each other. Takame was a little rough for sure but Natsuo hadn't quite figured out how to let the insults roll off like beads of water; part of it was being used for motivation yet there was a lack of focus in spending time and energy trying to one up his teammate, or at the very least attempting to show that he was capable of being on the same field as him. Friendly rivalries were common but unless the two had some kind of unspoken respect for one another this was far from that.

Looking over the duo's progress, Natsuo had finally managed to get one foot to stay firmly on top of the waters surface after a bit of trial and error. Good progress for his first time through but this was just the beginning. "Good good, now go for two feet." Sora would instruct as he caught Takame trying his best to imitate a gymnast with the splits he was doing. Focusing chakra to one foot was hard work, two was even worse, and they hadn't even gotten to the best part yet: walking! "It feels like trying to stand on ice, right? Just remember, wherever your body weight is going needs to be where you focus your chakra. It's tricky trying to keep up with that when you're moving but it'll become second nature soon enough." The man added. He wouldn't bring up the split to avoid putting Takame in an even more foul mood or running the risk of distracting Natuso, but Sora had seen it.

"Once you feel comfortable try taking some steps. Stay near the streams edge so you can hop back over if need be." He'd speak to Takame. The pair were progressing well, at their own respective paces, but it wasn't a race. Getting the basic genin-level techniques down was the important part and would be a springboard for everything else they learned as shinobi.

Natuso neglected to mention anything about Takame doing the splits, mostly due to the fact that he didn't know if he was going to have a similar outcome. As he put his second foot on the water, he had quite the opposite situation to Takame. His legs were way too close to each other. At least he didn't sink or explode either and it wasn't like he couldn't walk like this. It'd be difficult, but possible. 

He slowly increased his chakra, going slightly over how much he needed, but not to the point where he was doing the splits like his teammate. Eventually, he got it to the point where he was able to stand on the water as if it was solid ground. He wasn't doing bad, by any means. Neither was Takame, all things considered. He turned so that he'd be going along the line of the stream and turned away from Takame before taking a breath. He took a step forward, his foot dipping under the water briefly. The act of releasing your chakra then bringing it back to the same spot it had been was definitely the most difficult, and rather annoying, part of this lesson. He brought his other foot forward, once again it dipped under the water, but he'd officially taken a step.

At this point in the lesson, Takame had phased out that Natsuo was even in the lesson at all. Focusing hard on the technique they both were being taught by Sora. This was probably for the best anyways since it meant they wouldn't get distracted by each other's ire for each other. When two bad attitudes clashed it usually meant no common ground could be found and no solution would approach itself. So being able to tune out the silver-haired metal boy was probably for the best for the bird boy. It just meant he could concentrate and accomplish this training with relative ease. Sora would give some pretty sound advice about walking with two feet and then suggesting to take a few steps while staying close to the edge of the water should they need to hop back and honestly Takame didn't follow the latter of this instruction. He had pride and wanted to prove he was better than Natsuo. So he would begin walking to the center of the stream taking each step slowly. Once or twice his foot would sink slightly, but he kept his hand prepared just in case it decided to launch him out of the water. He had already known wind walking which was similar to water walking so hopefully he could use that to stop him from being launched out of the water to only fall back into it. After a few more steps his chakra was still not perfect for the technique, but he was walking on the water so that was some progress for Takame. There was relative silence for the next little while as the two genin focused solely on their own progress, it was a nice feeling and allowed Sora the opportunity to not have to worry about pulling them apart from each other verbally and instead see what they needed to improve upon. Natsuo was slowly making progress yet looked like he was afraid to take a step or even bring his feet shoulder length apart; wouldn't get far doing that, though in time he would take at least one step. "Separate your feet a bit more, Natsuo, so you can get a feel for how you would normally stand then work on taking steps." He'd instruct to the boy.

Then to Takame. Be it his headstrong attitude or hubris the boy chose not to stay by the safety of the riverbank as he began to walk. There was a bit more risk to things but perhaps it would force the boy to give that much more focus to his efforts and help him learn the technique that much more quicker. Sora would watch as the youth would take decent strides across the waters surface with only minimal missteps. He had picked up the water walking jutsu quickly probably in no small part to his above average skill with chakra control which would no doubt help him in future endeavors, one of which they were going to test right now. "Excellent work, Takame, but now it's time to pick up the pace. Try sprinting to that rock up there and back a few times."

Pointing to a decently sized boulder about fifteen to twenty meters down stream he'd instruct the birdy boy to try his hand at getting in some speed work. Focusing was simple enough when you only had to take slow, methodical steps but moving at pace would be a more true representation of what he'd expect out in the field.

[Natsuo Jokyū]

Natsuo noticed Takame not staying near the edge of the water. Overconfidence would be his downfall. He had to stop himself from doing something to distract the boy, like throwing a kunai near him or something. His training was more important than that though, so he managed to hold himself back. 

More instructions from Sora-sensei that he was already working towards, his instructions to Takame, however, could help a bit. "Already on it, Sensei." He'd say with an under the breath sigh. Natsuo began by walking, a bit faster than he normally would, his feet were now spread to where they were shoulder length apart. He then started walking in place, building up speed until it became jogging in place. It took all his focus, but he didn't dip below the water. Or at least, he didn't notice it if he did. He wasn't quite ready to sprint yet, but he felt he could probably jog now. He went away from the edge, jogging around the water until he felt satisfied. He knew what the next challenge probably was, sprinting to the rock and back. Now though, he'd have more experience with using it at a faster pace. Whereas Takame hadn't experienced going faster yet.

With each step, it was becoming easier and easier to walk on the water, which was good, but his steps were careful and calculated which in a combat or mission scenario wasn't going to be very useful at all. He needed to pick up his pace much like Sora asked of him. Yet how? One of the issues with his eyes was that he could see the movements of the water a lot faster and react with that same precision in his mind, but would his body listen in time? Would his chakra flow correctly to follow the quick waves and ripples of each step? Even more so when other ripples and waves were created by the environment and Natsuo too. Still, he kept silent during this training session not wanting to lose his focus by simply bad-mouthing Natsuo or being defiant like he always was to others outside of his clan. He needed to keep his cool, especially considering he was so hot-headed at times if he was to complete this lesson. So he would do his best to pick up the pace. Starting with a saunter which was a lower version of rgular walking. Then he would raise it to his normal pacing. Once that was stable in Takame's mind he would begin to power walk increasing his stride with each step to cover a bit more ground. Things were turning out okay with this so he would raise it another level this time trying for a jog and he could feel some slight disturbance in his chakra. He was molding it fast enough just yet to be fully stable with his feet showing some slight rolling movement each time he took a step. Takame was able to keep his balance and didn't let the slight rocking motion of his feet stop him, but he was having difficulties. Still, he didn't want to give up so he decided to just risk it and go for the sprint Sora asked of him and began his run. Results were immediate as the first step pushed his foot into the air causing him to lose balance backwards. He was able to put enough chakra under him though to catch himself from at least sinking. So outside of the spray of water that launched his foot back, he at least stayed mostly dry.
