As per usual, the sky above Kumogakure was a perfect, azure blue, seeming almost disdainful of the paltry clouds that attempted to silence its glaring haze. The clouds, whisper thin as they were, achieved little with their futile efforts and so almost the entire village was soaked with the violent UV rays their land was so well known for.

Almost the entire village, that was.

Any open window was a porthole into the abuse of the sun, lighting everything up and brightening every room that it could reach. But Sho, at least for now, was beyond the reach of the violent interloper. Instead, he was bathed in the artificial lights of the clinic once again.

Bathed in that artificial lighting stood the young, brown-haired Genin. Dressed in the clothes he used as an assistant, he had made sure to disinfect everything that could be disinfected, and his hair was pulled up by his headband, keeping those chestnut brown locks from falling into his face.

Still, lacking his regular calm and almost serene atmosphere, there was something that hung over the young boy like a shadow, casting a dark form of mirthless worry upon the handsome young face, sullying its otherwise flawless visage.

Called in that morning for what he couldn’t help but feel was an almost aggressively mundane shift, Sho wondered, momentarily, just why he was here - He wasn’t complaining of course, he would never complain about getting a chance to serve his village but considering his recent decision to once more join the Active-Duty roster of Kumogakure he couldn’t help but wonder if there weren’t other people who could have done this level of work. After all, the time that he spent just waiting around for something to happen and occasionally checking on long-term patients was time he could spend training. If they wanted him to take his new charge seriously, then wasn’t that important too?

Still, there was a part of him who understood why he was still being used as an assistant; Kumogakure was far from the smartest or most careful villages out there. Their forefathers had chosen to live somewhere almost constantly blasted by the sun with little natural shade and little water to speak of, after all.

When nobody put any thought into where to put the village in the first place, you couldn’t really expect them to put much thought into their daily lives.

As such, whilst a lot of their active-duty servicemen were great warriors, you wouldn’t go to Kumo for strategists. Or, in other words, one of the most common tactics of the village was 'run in and consider the implications of your actions later.' Or, more realistically, never. Thus, there would always be a need for more doctors.

Surprisingly, outside of the Yamamoto clan, Kumo wasn’t known for having a large number of doctors.

You would assume a village that had survived a plague would have an entire generation scarred and wanting to act as doctors to prevent this from ever happening again. You would assume that, of course, but that didn’t mean that that was actually the case. Instead, they were just as staffed (that is to say, under-staffed) as they were before the pandemic. Not like he had actually been alive to see that though, he was just going off of reports.

Speaking of reports, Sho was at that moment consulting the reports he had gotten back about a few relatively new patients. None of them needed urgent treatment, most of them were out cold, but it seemed that people had gotten hurt in a nearby landslide.

Such things were common around here - They were surrounded on all sides by mountains, and mountains by their nature had unstable bits. It would be a long month if someone wasn’t brought in after being crushed by nearby rocks and boulders.

Still, from the records he was able to see, there had been an unusually large amount that month. One or two was normal, yes, but they were getting near to ten or so. It seemed like there was a whole bunch of activity all of a sudden. He hoped, privately, that this wasn’t the sign of something greater to come.

Regardless, it was as he was considering this that his eyes looked up as he heard sudden, frantic footsteps. It was coming from further along the hospital and seemed as if they were coming his way. This was a clinic, it wasn’t uncommon to hear hurried footsteps, but this sounded more like a whole crowd, a miniature stampede, and heading his way.

The safe thing to do, he knew, was to wait in the room for it to pass. But what if it was something important? What if this was something he needed to check out? Besides, think about how the curiosity would eat away at him if he never found out what had caused it. So, reluctantly, he moved away from the nearby empty hospital bed and towards the door, ready to stick his head out of it, to find out what was going on…

Turned out, the gesture was entirely unnecessary as the door slammed open, with such voluminous force that Sho worried for a second they would break the glass frames within.

On the other side stood two people, one carrying the weight of the other. The one who was carrying was a young man, about Sho’s age or at most a few years older, dressed in the usual flak jacket of one of the village’s men.

The pale brown tabard gave him away immediately, which was good as he was conspicuously missing his headband. No, not missing, simply lacking it. It was wrapped like a makeshift tourniquet around the arm of his… co-worker? Friend? Teammate? The relationship was unclear, but that hardly mattered right now, given the state of his injuries.

From head to toe, the man looked like he’d been beaten to within an inch of his life. Every inch of bare skin, which wasn’t a lot to be fair, was grazed and bruised. He was bleeding both from his mouth and his nose, the former’s lip-skin clearly having been cut open whilst the latter seemed like a blunt force impact.

However, the thing that Shu noticed immediately was the fact that he was absolutely drenched in grime, covered in what looked like both wet and dry mud, even the hair was clumped together with dirt and filth.

"... Rockslide?”

It was a guess, a fluke really, but he couldn’t help but put forward a guess.

Immediately, Sho felt foolish - you weren’t supposed to guess what had happened; you were just supposed to fix what was wrong. Whilst knowing the cause of the injury was important, the incidental details often just bogged one down or led to presumptions and, thus, a wrong conclusion. Still, the nod of the man’s head served to at least confirm his suspicions.

"We were training, out by the foot of one of the nearby hills. Suddenly, boom! Harui was caught underneath it before I could even try to help him.”

This puzzled Sho for a moment. He knew rockslides could be fast, given enough time to gain steam from the top of a hill it was like being hit by a bulldozer, but these were two trained shinobi. Judging by their age, he had to assume they were Chuunin, unless they were held back like him.

If they were that skilled, why would they have trouble with something like this? Surely they would have some way of detecting something was wrong far before it became any sort of problem, right?

"How did you no-”
"Look, we can talk later. Just hurry up and fix him, alright!”

The other boy’s tone seemed angry and frustrated as he all but pushed past Sho and dropped this "Harui” on the bed, something that elicited a sharp yelp of pain from the victim as his leg collided with the bed.

Almost instinctively, Sho took a sharp intake of breath - He had been so busy looking at the rest of him that he hadn’t actually stopped to realize what was wrong. Sure, he was beaten to hell and back and he had scrapes, bruises and a bloodied nose, but the actual problem here was his leg.

It should have been obvious, Sho thought with a moment of self-irritation. The guy had needed to be carried in here, he was clearly limping, avoiding putting weight on that leg. Every time something pressed up against it, with even the lightest of pressure, the man's face contorted in a grimace of pain and suffering.

Now he saw why - the leg was clearly broken. Sho would need to do a scan to know more, but anyone could see that it was broken with even a token glance. Which, Sho knew, was a problem above his paygrade.

Most of Sho’s time working at the clinic or with his family had been to do with diseases and illnesses, fevers gained from people working themselves into exhaustions or flare-ups of local fevers. He could diagnose medicine, tell people to take bed rest, even sometimes be an aid for a surgery or two. But handling something like this on his own had not been part of his training just yet.

If he was alone, he would have been panicking and all but screaming for help. As it was, his eyes shot up and back to the doorframe, seeing as the other sounds of footsteps suddenly reached the room.

The figure of an older man in a similar coat to his own caused Sho to let out a sigh of relief. A somewhat familiar face, though not one that he had ever been assigned to before. Until recently, he had been directly under the care of other Yamamoto members, meaning he didn't know many of the regular doctors on first-name basis.

Still, even were he not a doctor, there was something intimidating about the silhouette that he cut. Tall, dangerously thin, with a look somewhere between exhaustion and fury plastered across his aged brow.

Flanked by a pair of other Kumo-nin, Sho had to assume that they had been with them whilst they were training and had been following behind the doctor whilst this one had run ahead. Indeed, that quickly proved to be the case as the attending physician chastised the pair who had shot forwards without restraint.

"What do you think you’re doing?! You all but ran with your injured friend! What would you have done if you’d tripped, huh? You almost made it far worse than it already is.”

From the tone of voice, Sho could tell that the man wasn’t actually angry, more exhausted with this kind of shenanigans. Dealing with patients was often seen as one of the worst parts of the job, though Sho disagreed. Regardless, now wasn’t a time to sit about dictating would’ve, should’ve nor could’ve.

Approaching the bed, the doctor looked down at the leg and pressed it gently with a finger. Recoiling smoothly and gently as the patient let out a cry of pain, he nodded to himself, as if content with his suspicions being proven, though it seemed unnecessary - anyone could see it was broken without even needing to touch it at all.

"Yes, definitely broken… Yamamoto, I want you to run a scan over his leg, see just how bad it is.”

Sho nodded, moving quickly to perform Ikkou Gazou over the patient. This kind of casual disregard from the older doctors was common; yes, the man could have done it himself, everyone in the hospital knew that technique, but it cost chakra. Considering how costly some medical ninjutsu could be, every little could help.

"Right… No major internal damage, everything seems mostly superficial… The leg’s pretty bad though. Broken in two places, pretty jagged breaks too. We’re lucky it's not a splinter.” The doctor nodded, seemingly satisfied with the job. Then a pause fell between the two of them, each clearly waiting for the other to speak, to act, to take charge.

"So…. Set the injury, Yamamoto.” The doctor broke the silence first, clearly impatient, probably still exasperated from earlier.

"Uh… sir, I don’t think I...” Sho began, before being cut off by the doctor shaking his head. Immediately, almost involuntarily, Sho's mouth shot close, as if that simple gesture alone had complete thrall over him.

"Alright, if that’s the case, let me show you how this works. Save you from having to rely on others in the future.”

It felt bad, like he had disappointed the older man, that he had failed somehow. Despite barely knowing him, Sho knew he was a senior doctor, someone who had mastered this field and was recognised for their brilliance.

To fail someone like that... it formed a knot in his stomach. Yet he kept quiet about that, instead mutely nodding as the older man took some of the victim’s blood from his leaking nose and dabbed it onto Sho’s outstretched finger.

"Alright, now trace this sign onto the skin…”

Like an expert calligrapher with a paintbrush, Sho’s finger was guided to trace a symbol on the boy’s leg, before another was formed on each of Sho’s palms. Finally, his hands were pushed down, making contact with the skin once more, much to the patient’s chagrin. Judging by the sounds made, this had to be raw agony.

With but the lightest application of chakra, the sigil began to radiate a crimson glow, like someone was shining light directly through the blood itself. As the light intensified, the broken fragments of bone seemed to shift about within the man's leg, knitting back together as if it had never been broken in the first place.

It was a thing of beauty, though judging from the sheer noise within the room, that appreciation for the art was clearly not shared by everyone in the room.

"Now, this only lasts for about an hour or so, so I’m going to have one of our nurses set this one up with a cast to keep it in place so it can heal.”

The man nodded, content with his decision for now. Judging by the looks of other people across the room, he was the only one who was quite so content. The face of the patient was drenched in sweat, his face still a portrait of ghoulish unpleasantness. The other nin within the room all seemed to be slowly looking at the doctor, all seemingly thinking the same thing.

Sho, for his part, looked slightly alarmed, his eyes moving up to look at the man still in the bed. Those cries sure didn’t seem painless, though he supposed fixing broken bones rarely was. Still…

"Sir, are you sure we shouldn’t have given him some form of anaesthetic first?”

A long silence followed, this one heavy with pregnant pause, before the doctor smiled wickedly.
"Nah, this’ll teach the little brat not to run in the hallways.”
