PREFACE

Legends tell of an ancient temple hidden deep within the Western mountains of Hi no Kuni, wreathed in mist and morning dew, flanked by centuries-old pine forests. Denounced by scholars the world over as little more than obscure folktale, hardly worth academic consideration, across the four corners of the shinobi world, from fishing village to bustling metropolis, poem and song referencing the crane-scholars of Takamikura-ji, or the sacred sun-dappled peach gardens of the lost Untaidake peak frequent the lips of peasant and bureaucrat alike. And while its depictions may differ, warped by the passing of time and the creeping influence of wandering minstrels eager to please their patrons with fanciful tales, the sprawling temple-palace of Takamikura-ji is every bit as real as it’s tales would claim.

Home of the Shinkaku crane-scholars, lore keepers, lovers of the Four Great Arts, musicians, poets, painters and strategists, they keep watch over the shinobi world, bearing witness to the rise and fall of men, observing yet seldom interfering. Tracing their lineage to a time when the world was young, these avian philosophers take great pride in the depths of their archives, cavernous halls filled with scrolls, more knowledge than one could consume in ten lifetimes. As secretive as they are ancient, the Shinkaku hold themselves with an air of pompous nobility, a chilling ethereal grace, detached from the petty and oft inconsequential squabbles of the rabble beneath them. Over the past century, few shinobi have had the privilege of setting foot in their midst, bearing witness to the peach gardens of eternal spring, or dining in the halls of manifest virtue, but to those select few who have sampled the arcane proverbs of the Shinkaku, is to have sampled wisdom itself.


LOCATION

Shrouded in mystery, kept secret by powerful Genjutsu and barrier seals, the location of the mountain range of Untaidake is hotly debated among even the most occult of scholars. Some would claim that it is located in the western region of Hi no Kuni, others laughing at the through of it anywhere beyond the boarders of mountainous Kaminari no Kuni. While others claiming that it mysteriously disappears, only to reappear a world away on the eve of an auspicious celestial omen. And while the truth may lie somewhere in between, in the eyes of those who have actually visited, tight lipped as they are, the mountain paths are treacherous, winding through raging rapids, snaking through ancient pine forest, deep into an unending mountain fog, all the while, a the faint sounds of whispering bamboo flutes, and twanging zither strings call out to those who have been invited.

Nestled atop the peak, larger and more opulent than the most ostentatious of Daimyo below, the sprawling compound of Takamikura-ji embodies an otherworldly decadence utterly foreign to all but the most fortunate. Expansive halls flanked with delicate screen walls, painted silk-pannels chronicling the histories and folk tales of the land, ornate circular doorways framing the unnatural beauty of carefully cultivated trees and flowerbeds. Arranged in mathematically precise angles, in accordance with the most convoluted of divination and superstitions, breathtaking gardens and orchards dot the landscape, segmented by stout tile-roofed walls, and oppressively grand towering gates.


CULTURE AND TEACHINGS

Fancying themselves scholarly gentlemen, the Shinkaku cranes spend their lives in the pursuit of perfection of the Four Great Arts: the longing melodies of the guqin zither, the divine strategy of the Go board, the divine simplicity of ink brush calligraphy, and the harmonious brushwork of silk-screen painting. While more than capable in the ninja arts, and worthy combatants in their own right, to engage in Lowlander disputes would mean centuries long humiliation. For a shinkaku crane to obey the call of their summoner and aid them on the field of battle is a rare sight indeed. Much more willing to invite a Lowlander into their sprawling temple compounds, than leaving their roost, albeit a rare honour few would dare take lightly, the Shinkaku take great pride in themselves as teachers and philosophers, the exploits of their pupils an incredibly potent form of social currency. To form a bond with the Shinkaku is to take on a master, a teacher and parental figure, a guardian transcending the mundane bonds of the student's prior life, one who will shape and mold their student into the wisest, most powerful shinobi of their age, or so they would have you believe. Dogmatic and wrapped in layer upon layer of proverb and allegory, it is often unclear what divine truth one should pull from the sparse teachings of these ancient beings. Rarely content with explaining themselves further, they can be of maddeningly few words, the intention behind them, utterly incomprehensible.

In the times when greater meaning can be gleaned from their overly-poetic turns of phrase, it is clear that the Shinkaku believe in the Dao, the Way, a way of understanding the universe as a unending flow of inseparable dualistic-monism, harmonious existence in a world of paradoxical simultaneous unity and duality. To live is to die, to die is to bring life. From weakness, there is strength, from unity, division.


HIERARCHY

Arranged into a vaguely meritocratic bureaucracy, the Shinkaku cranes obey a strict system of hierarchical ranks assigned based on age, scholastic accomplishment, the accolades of their students, and myriad other factors ill described to even their most devoted of shinobi companions. Rigid in their structure, and bound by the copious sets of laws governing their society, for a member of the lower ranks to oppose their superior would be nigh unthinkable. And while dissenting opinions and spirited debates are quite often celebrated among the Shinkaku, political slights, especially those that would cause a loss of face, are quick to turn into century-long feuds between the aggrieved parties.


INTERACTIONS WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD

Migratory in nature the cranes of Takamikura-ji can often be spotted flying along the costal regions of the shinobi world, albeit generally indistinct from other birds of their ilk. And while there may not exist consensus on how to best form a bond and contract these fickle creatures, there has never been a shinobi who did not have to perform some act of great personal sacrifice in service of the Shinkaku. Unwilling to reveal their true nature, the avian scholars are content quietly observing man kind, gracing them with an ancient dance should they keep their distance long enough. A common folktale in the rural communities of Hi no Kuni tell of a man, recently widowed, saving a dying crane from a poacher’s grasp. That night, his bed was graced with the presence of a woman of otherworldly beauty, a bird given human form. While the latter half of their tale may bear embellishment, the benevolence of the Shinkaku should not be underestimated towards those willing to aid their cause.

DESCRIPTION:

Hardening their beak to a near-unbreakable state, the user divebombs their target, tucking their wings to spin in a drill-like fashion, intending to impale their target. The effectiveness of the technique relies on the mass of the user, with most human sized birds piercing through targets like a lance wielding samurai on horseback. Far larger birds have been known to topple the stoutest of stone walls, or tear massive trenches through the earth.

Standing at an imposing 6’8”, 8’7” with his neck fully extended, Zuihō bears the markings of a red-crowned crane, stark white plumage replete with inky-black wing feathers, crowned a rich cinnabar red. Ancient and wise, a glimmer of mischief has not faded from his round jewel like eyes.


PERSONALITY:
Clever and witty, Zuihō holds himself with an air of great wisdom. Like many of his compatriots, he finds the trappings of human life to be incredibly dull. Easily bored, few can hold his interest, unless willing to engage in spirited philosophical debate, or muse endlessly about the Arts. A cunning strategist, he has little interest in engaging in combat himself, but will do so to aid his summoner in a just conflict. To hold his favour, one must be of outstanding moral character, dedicated in their pursuits, and most of all, display a receptiveness to his teachings.

A model scholar, Zuihō’s prowess with the Guqin rivals all but the greatest of his ilk, the deep warbling of his melodic song bewitching and ephemeral. One of the greatest strategists of Takamikura-ji, much like on the field of battle, his skills on the Go board are second to none. Deeply concerned with the pursuit of beauty and art, he rarely favours the most direct path, looking to out-wit his adversaries at every turn. He detests meaningless conflict,

Short for his stature, Hiei stands above 5’9”, peering down from a comfortable 6’11” with his neck outstretched. Ostentatious even among his avian brethren, he bears a crown of brilliant yellow plumage, a mane of downy white feathers, and creamy tipped wings.

PERSONALITY:
Of incredible intelligence, Hiei has infuriatingly little patience for those in his tutelage. Eyes as sharp as any, able to deduce even the most incomprehensible of situations, he has an incurable need to prove his intelligence to anyone who is willing to listen. Unwilling to explain anything twice, he is incredibly difficult to pin down, abandoning his summoner as soon as he feels "his work is done”. Easily offended and quick to anger, he can be easily baited, and will fight to defend his pride even against the wishes of his summoner.

Though few and far between, those who are capable of outwitting him, or at the very least, holding their own in a spirited debate will often win his favour.

Large for a bird of her species, Shōkaku stands 4’8”, comfortably over 6’2” with her neck fully extended. Crimson eyes crested with brilliant white plumage, her silky black breast feathers slowly fade to a silvery blue.

PERSONALITY:
Graceful and ephemeral, Shōkaku’s voice is like the morning dew. Much like her kin, her wisdom is expressed in terse riddles, with the weight of her many hundred years of wisdom behind them. Serene like the surface of a midnight pond, few are able to read her, her desires unseen even by those closest to her. While incredibly gracious and good-natured, it is near impossible to compel her to do anything.

Caring of others, she wishes for harmony in all things, detesting open aggression and chaos. Rarely outwardly contrarian to those who would summon her, to enlist her aide in battle one must endeavor to build a great deal of trust with this mercurial creature.

Tall and slender for his age, Hatsukaze stands above 5’8”, his neck reaching to 6’5” when fully extended. His brow stained a dusty crimson, his mild complexion varies from light sandy brown to salty white and grey.

Observant and cautious, Hatsukaze has a strong aversion to reckless behaviour. Methodical, organized in his thought and incredibly intentional in his speech, he is content with quiet contemplation over instinctive action. Incredibly skilled with a horse-hair brush, his talent for art is second to none, his eyes detecting even the smallest of imperfections. Beautiful yet unremarkable for a Shinkaku crane, as a younger member of his kin, Shōhō stands a modest 3’7”, able to reach 4’5” with his neck extended. Crowned a rich cinnabar much like many other denizens of Takamikura-ji, he bears a crisp white coat of feathers with inky-black accents.

PERSONALITY:
Abrasive and condescending, Shōhō is quick to put challengers in their place. Haughty and oftentimes pompous, this young scholar is eager to prove himself amongst the ranks of celebrated scholars and artists within Takamikura-ji. Diminutive among her kin, Sazanami stands just under 4’5”, reaching 5’7” when craning her neck upwards. Wearing a coat of periwinkle blue feathers, her tail nearly brushes against the ground, dyed a smoky indigo-grey.

PERSONALITY:
Capricious and fickle, Sazaznami is a trickster at heart. While drastically more intelligent than any Lowland scholar, she is rarely serious, confounding those gullible enough to be caught in his clever turns of phrase. Incredibly resourceful and a sly combatant, her skills on the battlefield are as deadly as they are unpredictable. Bearing a weak sense of loyalty, even among her ilk, she has been known to deceive her summoner should it prove amusing, which is most always does.

Well suited to those with a taste for mischief, she takes a liking to those who are able to hold her amusement.
