The Futago twins had always been a frequent sight in Taka’s home, but now that they were both enrolled in the Academy he saw them more frequently than ever, twin hurricanes of pure, unbridled enthusiasm. It was something else, how well the boys seemed to be handling... everything. Their combined energy never faltered, never flagged, the twins always greeting each day with as much gumption and cheer as they had the day before. They both undoubtedly still had to be deep in grief, but kept busy regardless, and seemed to be making the best of each day. He wasn’t an instructor in any capacity, least of all formal, and he would be his own last choice as a leader of any kind; but he felt strongly responsible for the boys, and it was ultimately harmless for him to help show them the basics of the lifestyle he’d chosen for himself when he was their age. That Taka had lost a brother was nothing in the face of what they had to overcome: a mother and a father both gone much too young. The grief wearing him thin didn't matter; if he could help make it any easier on the boys, then that was what he was going to do. They didn’t have classes this morning—a weekend—so they’d slept over at his apartment after their lessons. He let them sleep through the late morning while he prepared his coffee and got to some semblance of functionality, and braced himself for the inevitable rush of activity when they woke and started running all over their apartment. He started most days with three cups. The twins usually necessitated four; today he would have to break out the big guns. "Saito, Kaito,” he said, sipping the dregs of his fifth cup of coffee, "let’s go see if Auntie Yui needs any help over at the teahouse. It’ll be… mission practice.” Not necessarily as important as actual D-rank missions, but it might be a useful exercise in helping them develop their skills in teamwork and following orders. Something to focus on would help the day pass easier for all of them.

Sleep was the only time when Saito was docile and his more dormant personality was more apparent. A quiet child who simply enjoyed the day-to-day activities and who had normal fears and aspirations he was practically average in every way when his mind wasn't running a thousand miles a second, but once he would awaken it was like a hurricane of emotions and thoughts would inhibit his mind. Even more so the closer and closer they got to the twin's mother's death anniversary. While he wouldn't let it show he was affected by this a lot more than he would let on. Even if his memories of her were foggy at times the fact she was gone meant a lot more than he would ever let on. Sometimes he would have nightmares about her and would end up crying in his sleep. He would never wake up but would cry silently and quietly as the pain enveloped his dreamscape. Once awake though he would quickly wipe his tears and begin his normally energetic and theatrical endeavors of the day![break][break]

The call of their uncle was what would get him to rise this morning and he would excitedly get ready as he did every morning rushing towards their uncle and asking, "verily does though speak the truth?" Saito would ask with so much enthusiasm in his voice. To be able to do mission practice at such a young age was very thrilling especially since they were still only academy students who never got this opportunity! He would turn back to call out to his brother and he would shout, "Thy whose claims the title of loser shalt be a foul-smelling pheasant!" Trying to rile his brother up and make a fun little game out of this mission for the two of them.

Dreams of fantasy filled the mind of Kaito as he slept, although one would never guess it from the outside. On the outside, Kaito was calm and at peace with his sibling. Both laid next to each other, Kaito upside down to his brother. Yet they both face each other and instinctively moved towards each other. A small comfort in a currently very... vacant world. It was coming up on a year since they had lost their parents. Try as others might, Kaito and Saito couldn't fill the hole left by that. Not that they were emotionally mature enough to even fully comprehend the issue they were having- let alone how hard it would be to fix. For now such gaps were filled with flights of fancy, at least for Kaito.

Though he seemed quiet and calm, within the boundless illusions of his mind, Kaito was riding dragons, killing demons, and saving countless grateful civilians! He was untouchable, a practical divine among men! A-

Kaito would awaken in sync with his brother, both moving as if every nerve path in their bodies were ready to fire off at a moments notice! The only real thing that slowed their start would be Kaito's quiet noting that his feet weren't wet like they had been the past few days. As he prepared, Kaito would take care to put his outfit on as meticulously as possible. As they were given a short description for their mock mission, Kaito would speak to his brother's challenge. "If only a mission were so easy to take on. The task being given should fit the rising suns of the Futago clan! Tell us uncle, what are the details of this quest!?" He'd hope he could convince his uncle to give a mock mission briefing- as his sibling had decided to turn the early part of the mission into a race and Kaito was certain his outfit was more complicated and harder to put on. Hopefully this would provide enough of a stall tactic to even the odds for the actual race.

And just like that: there was the activity. Verily does though speak the truth? Saito asked, bright and enthusiastic, shortly followed by the eloquently spoken: If only a mission were so easy to take on. Taka smiled despite the unfinished fifth cup of coffee. They were an odd pair, to be sure, and difficult to keep up with, but Saito and Kaito’s quirks were so uniquely them that it never failed to charm him. They raced to get dressed and get out the door, while Taka took his own sweet time finishing his coffee and putting on his shoes. Once they were both ready—with a pat on the head as spoils to the victor—he lead the way down the road, starting the short five-minute walk to the teahouse. "Delivery service,” Taka said decisively. He wasn’t honestly sure what needed doing, but there were always good coming and going from Auntie Yui’s teahouse. "We’ll have to make sure everything gets to where it’s going safely, quickly, and accurately.” Accuracy being as important as everything else: a good exercise in reading mission briefs, maybe. It was a quiet morning at the teahouse, not too many patrons. They must have just missed the breakfast rush. ”Taka, Saito, Kaito!” Yui exclaimed as the group entered, bustling over as she wiped her wet hands on her apron. ”What are you boys up to today?” "We come in search of a mission,” Taka said, casting a sidelong glance at the twins, echoing their oddly formal manner of speaking. "If you’ve any tasks to issue, for the honor of the Futaago clan.” Yui smiled and cocked her head as she thought about it. ”Hmm…” she said, pondering. ”Well, there’s an order of tea leaves and coffee beans ready at the Nakahara compound for me. And Akihiko-san just down the road said my order of cups and plates just came in. Here—” She fished around in her apron pockets, and produced a little notebook, from which she ripped out two pages: what looked like order manifests. "If you boys could help get those for me I’d greatly appreciate it.” Taka turned to look at the twins. "Are you up to the task?” he asked.

The race was one-sided against Saito since he had fabric that was a bit unyielding at times and would bunch up easily. Plus his brother had gotten a head start having gotten ready a little before him so he would claim the title of the loser in the race to begin the day, but that didn't mean it was the end of the race as they would need the result of the mission itself to determine the true loser of the race! The mission in question would be about the delivery of objects to the people which meant the speed of-completion race was definitely on for the mission! So Saito had to rack his glorious brain on how he would beat his brother in this race of fame and glory! They would arrive at the teashop and uncle Taka would speak slightly like they would which practically put stars in Saito's eyes. Was he finally turning around and embracing the theatrical life and showing off his coolness? How serendipitous! The two boys would be given pieces of paper with their instructions and Saito would look at his brother and give a goofy grin before turning to Uncle Taka and proudly exclaiming, "Fret not for the twins of eternal glory shall accomplish any task!" He would pose dramatically hoping his brother would do the same as him.

Having cleverly snatched victory from his brother, earning himself first place in their two person race. "Seems you still have much growing to do little brother!" Kaito would proclaim, a slight jab at his sibling, knowing he abhored being called the younger brother. Once they approached the counter, Kaito was ecstatic to hear his uncle play along with their game. The young boy's eyes would gleam with energy enough that he was certain they would cast light upon the entire room, his body tensing as he got ready for the upcoming mission.

A delivery mission. Truly, a small task, but all heroes must start somewhere. It would seem the Futago twins were destined for humble origins. None the less, the boy would have an equally childish grin on his face, mirroring his brother as they readied themselves for the task ahead. With but a few motions, the brothers both knew what would come next. Standing next to each other, both would strike a pose as if this delivery would be recorded in their county's history for aeons to come! Now of course, the boy would realize he probably should have read the orders he'd been given before striking his pose in a way where he could no longer read the slip, but it was already too late. One does not simply cancel the heroic pose.

The twins struck twin poses, grandiose and heroic, so inspiring in their construction that Taka was compelled to start a gentle round of applause. Auntie Yui joined in—of course she did—until a customer jingled through the door and she lifted a hand to wave in greeting. "Thank you, boys,” she said, bustling back over to the counter. "I’m counting on you!” "Okay,” Taka said, gesturing for the twins to join him back outside. "Let us convene.” They were so starstruck by him copying their mannerisms, he couldn’t help but continue… as best he could, anyway. To commit so completely to the bit took both a vocabulary and a creativity that he just didn’t have. "The most important thing about accepting a quest,” he said, "no matter how small, is first understanding the whole scope of your… adventure.” Not quite the right word when their ‘adventures’ in the future would be more violence than fun, but it surely wouldn’t hurt for them to enjoy this innocence while it lasted. "Auntie Yui gave you your destinations and your goal. Let’s make sure we all know where we’re going, what we need to get, and how we’re going to get there and back.”

"Twas but a fluke!" Saito would rebuttal to his brother about being the loser in their initial race. It wasn't that Saito didn't mind losing to his twin, but rather when it came at the cost of being teased about being called little. Just because he was born just a few minutes after his twin, which unfortunately made them be born in different years, didn't mean he was anything less than his twin. Still, it was fun to play around with his brother so he would take his brother's jests with a grain of salt and wouldn't let them get to him.[break][break]

Their poses were met with applause from their uncle and their mission giver and Saito couldn't help and smile grandly for the applause. While it wasn't a roar from a giant crowd it was still applause which meant they were on their side of this performance. Every clap was like a boost of energy in Saito's mind so his morale was certainly increased by it. Yet the applause wouldn't last as Auntie Yui's attention was drawn to a customer and Uncle Taka ushered them outside to begin the mission. [break][break]

Uncle Taka would continue speaking similarly to the twins which just made Saito so happy. It was like he was slowly becoming the role model Saito so dreamed he could be. Someone so strong and vibrant who just made everyone around them smile. A true hero indeed. His radiance even made sure to encompass the twins by making sure they fully understood the assignment they were given. Saito being as eager as he was would recite one section of the mission, "Obtain rations of leaves and beans from the Nakahara compound!" He would then turn to Kaito and hoped his twin would remember the other part of the mission since it would probably be a good idea for them both to know what they were after.

In reality the young boy had been given the task of simply picking up supplies and bringing them back home, but between his uncle choosing to play along and the applause from his relatives, Kaito felt as though he was a giant- truly the hero he often said he was! As his uncle stressed the importance of the scope of the adventure, Kaito could recall countless legends. The Demon King took place almost exclusively around one loan village, with the details of the demon king's previous conquests being left to the background- while Ojimokusei's quest affected not just the continent in his time, but even those same kingdoms in the time of of his son. To think the twin's own stories could go from this small step to that of myth was an inspiring thought!

It was no different than the battle-bond that longtime team members shared, Taka supposed, but he’d never worked with a single team long enough for him to ever develop such a close relationship. So often he worked in solitude, which was, he thought, often for the best. "Very good,” he said, nodding. "Akihiko-san is closer, but the goods he provides to Auntie Yui are more delicate. Think wisely, for your decisions shall impact the outcome of our quest.” He would follow along with whatever it was the twins agreed upon: ultimately this was their mission, and regardless of whether or not they arrived at the same conclusion that he would have if he was in their shoes, the experience should be enlightening for them regardless. Failure was one of the most valuable teachers, and if they chose a path that led to their mission being more difficult, then they would learn just as much as if they chose a different path.

As expected Kaito would continue the mission rebriefing alongside him creating a sort of tandom between the two memories of the mission which just made the whole twin act of theirs even more believable. Of course, it wasn't just an act since they were indeed twins, but the whole dynamic they did together was something the two boys found pride in and enjoyed doing especially around others. Plus it helped hide any of their problems from the world so it was a nice bonus for the two energetic boys.[break][break]

Then Uncle Taka would ask the boys which was the most important of the two sections of the missions to undergo first. Saito the one who tended to think about how things were ordered in comparison to Kaito who did things by emotion, this difference between the two helped balance out their shows and dynamic more than either would care to admit, decided he would be the first one to speak up, "Fortune favors those who take the path less traveled by that knowledge we should begin our journey towards the Nakahara compound forth haste!" The plan was clear as day in Saito's mind as traveling to the compound to retrieve the order from there and then grabbing the plates and cups on the way back seemed the most sensical to Saito.
