The academy was ... a great way to create underlings. He had done it out of the kindness of his heart in a past life, and now it was loaded with the opportunity to get the best, brightest and youngest from the get go. So, he had taken an interest in Kusagakure's educational system. Call it one of his 'learning curves' - granted, he had only been in two ninja villages but they were remarkably similar. Their content focused on different things though, and for a time Sozin would sit in on those lessons.

At the time it had been as a guise as to better 'evaluate' their system. It had actually been so he could get a foundational knowledge of the village. Still: nobody had been foolish enough to deny the councillor entrance or authority to teach or to offer insight. And true: he did remember much of the way of the ninja. Some of it just couldn't be forgotten, he supposed.

And what else a perfect way then to set in Akui's visions and piousness then through the educational system?

It had posed actually, that it would be much harder than he had intended. The religiously secular land as he had first come to realise was intent on it being free: Sozin had mistakenly mentioned a God once, and found himself in the presence of four more teachers in his next lesson - watching him teach.

It was that same concern that made him pull it back, speak to the brain and reevaluate his approach: it could not be done so easily here. But, with all great things: a rot could cause the church to fall. Not his church, mind: so righteous and true. He understood, therefore, for now while he changed the system - and oh he would: all the attitudes in the world could not stop him, would place his efforts in smaller classrooms. Quietly: slowing down.

And that started with some of his free, stupendous one to one teaching: all the way up to small groups of up to 5 budding Shinobi/Kunoichi.

He waited for it to start.

Lessons at the academy were a hit or miss for young Saito. On one hand, he learned new techniques and jutsu like his classmates and the history of the village, but on the other hand it never really felt like it applied to his interests. The art of the fight and the flair for the extravagant and Avant Garde were what he desired. While some children wanted strength and fame or power and wealth he simply coveted that which made him stand out and fill the need for aspiration for the young blonde. [break][break]

That's not to say he would skip the lessons they taught though but a lot of time he had trouble sitting still in these classes and would simply create new poses or phrases in his head or sometimes in scrolls to keep his mind occupied. He would get in trouble at times for this, but he didn't care since he still learned the information and stuff they taught him he just simply had other priorities in his ever-racing mind.[break][break]

Arriving into the classroom he would say aloud, "Fear not for the hero of salvation has arrived!" Striking a dramatic pose he would add, "Flying at the speed of light Swallow Tail is here!" He would hold his pose for a few seconds to take in the applause in his mind before taking his seat in the class with a smile on his face so bright he could blind someone. Pulling out one of his quotes scrolls he would immediately take notes of his entrance so he could remember to compare it to his other phrases later.

Sozin continued getting ready as the people filed in - then there would be one... particularly bright, loud, and all things effervescent in the ninja world entering the classroom. Sozin had no control over who was and wasn't in it, but he was thankful people were showing up all the same.

Sozin audibly laughed. The clothing reminded him of him. Back when he wore blaring orange to everything: and still somehow managed to remain stealthy. This would be an interesting class, if nothing else. Annoying too - certainly. But entertaining. Sozin would make bets with himself about how long that would last before his patience waned depending on how seriously or not the actual... theatrical boy took himself. "Settle in." But would otherwise not respond to the ... gesture.

It boded well for the philosophy of ninja: where the reality had not settled in yet. Perhaps Sozin needed to include a frank conversation about death? Still - one other person filed in after Saito. The five of them were there. He had prepared some content already but this was not unlike that which he had performed in the past.

"Tell me about our Leadership, and Daimyo." Sozin would pick out Saito- pointing at them directly. There was no request: no breking in as to how the lesson was going to go. Did they expect this to be a lesson on chakra? He, who could not use it?

No. It was history. But history would serve a reminder to what battles had taken place in the past... and how they could inform the future. All by the helpful aid of scribes, noting down their precious history.

The audience was not amused and no round of applause would bless the boy's ear as he made his entrance! Must not have been dramatic enough! He would have to try harder to appeal to the masses! For now, it was time for class to begin so he would get to his seat and sit in the glory that was his throne. A seat worthy of future lords and ladies it would be the future seat of someone who was destined for greatness and it was Saito's seat so he would take pride in his spot as it would be the building block to his future![break][break]

The lesson would begin and it would be about history! How wonderful! Tales of the brave and bold! Danger and deceit! Things that were worthy of the tale of the heroes of old and tales worthy of a child of the theater! This was a perfect model to build himself off of and Saito was the chosen one to explain to the leader they would call their teacher. Quickly jumping up in his chair he would stand tall and strike another dramatic pose and respond with, "A being of great renown for their tongue and fortitude! A pillar of peace and a beacon of the people! The Daimyo will bring the land to the forefront of peace and success!" Whether this was true or not Saito didn't know as honestly he was sputtering utter nonsense, but it sounded right in the youth's mind.

"You're right." Sozin nodded. While he hadn't perhaps gone into anything other than surface level detail, Saito had done what others hadn't: spoken up. Sure, Sozin might've called on him but it could have quite easily been a response of silence. "Hirano Tetsuo-sama is our Daimyō. With the desire to see the people of Nohara no Kuni prosper, ^{and has been...}" Sozin would go tangentially into his sermon: some of the more studious students of the time would have known that it was from the textbooks, because it was textbook, save for the change of some language that Sozin himself used more colloquially.

Unfortunately because of that, it would be almost universally boring to all of them. It was for his own sanity as well that he had a purpose to learn these things. There was a potential concern that they weren't taking it in, but he had gone through and learned what he could about just everything. It was good that he had a good enough memory - and he'd been a good at identifying those people when being the Tsuchikage's Assistant. So, it was interesting that he ended up here and now, teaching a lesson for the new generation. Again.

But, it did provide him with some comfort as he taught because it was familiar to him, he had taught like this before. But he'd call out more people, and have different questions for everybody. "And what are the three pillars of learning?" A topic they'd all heard at one point or another, moving onto the related topic.

His words were greeted with affirmation which meant his answer was correct how fortuitous! Saito couldn't help and give the teacher a big smile as he sat back down in his seat and celebrated this tiny victory himself. For who not other than the prince of salvation to bring light to the fabled land of grass? He would be the hero of legend that the whole village will one day praise once the trials of education have been completed! Till then he would tally forth and onward and best these obstacles till his eventual rise into stardom![break][break]

As the lesson would continue and the decorum of the students would begin to wane. Saito would find himself lingering on the thoughts of his inner monologue. Thinking of feats and accomplishments he could attain once his education was complete. The addition and praise he would get from the spectators of the world. The tales minstrels would sing of his accomplishments and the history that would be etched into the books of lore. How magnanimous this would be for him and how praised his uncle could be for raising the twin boys to their lofty expectations! Such wonder and beauty it would be and while Saito knew it would take a toll on his body and mind as time went on he knew he held the fortitude to complete it![break][break]

Soon it would be time to express and show off his mental prowess with another question given to the class. This time it was based upon the temple of learning, how fitting, and what keeps it aloft. This was a bit trickier for Saito since this was more of a philosophy question which was certainly out of his realm of expertise, but that didn't mean he couldn't try. So getting up again like last time and striking another pose he would respond with, "To bring in which can be absorbed, initiated, and rightfully executed!" Saito wasn't fully sure if this was correct and it did lack a bit of the normal theatrics that he normally exhibited, but when he couldn't think of a way to say something more eloquent he would sometimes lose his speaking habits.

[attr="class","eijLord"] "A bright boy," a voice called from the entryway of the classroom. There stood an elderly man in a green kimono hunched over a lacquered walking stick. "That sure is a lot of build up to tell them that they are to be getting evaluated today, Sozin."

He laughed to himself while using his free hand to cover his mouth. Eiji was wearing a guise to appear as he last did when he was openly in the public eye, appearing to be an old geazer. It was too difficult to explain to academy students that a thirty-something year old man had revolutionized the countries knowledge of barrier ninjutsu. Appearing old would stop too many probing questions.

Sozin stood up. "Students, this is Sanagi Eiji. He was once an instructor and a retired member of the council. He's going to be taking you one by one for an assessment and giving you a one on one lesson in something that should help to improve where you are weakest."

Eiji nodded. "I will take your golden boy first, Sozin. The rest of you, please be more engaged in learning, you only get to go through academy once."

It was a light scolding, but for someone who had seen a lifetime of war it was the best wisdom that he could offer. Besides, it was always good to come off a little strict up front to get them to pay close attention.

Assuming that Saito would follow, Eiji would take him from the classroom out to a field in the back, where several school staff members watched them from afar. Eiji was truly here to assess the school's effectiveness than the students themselves.

"What is your name? How long have you been in attendance at the academy?" Eiji would ask first. "And what do you feel you are struggling with most on your journey to graduation?"

A new voice would enter the classroom and much like the other students in the class, Saito would turn his attention to it. It was an older man someone who had experience as a shinobi which meant he had to have some fame to him right? Saito couldn't help and have a bright smile of glee at their appearance as it meant there could be so many wonders the old man could teach him and even his brother if he could recommend him to Kaito. He was so enamored with the idea of someone old and possibly famous showing up that he didn't even process the fact they were being evaluated. [break][break]

The one thing he did hear was one on one lesson which just meant even more for Saito to build up to be this superhero of Kusa he dreamed of being. So when he found out he was going to be the first one to be given this lesson Saito couldn't help and jump out of his seat with a ton of exuberance and follow the older gentleman. He would be led to the field out back and Saito could feel the eyes watching. Which to regular students would make them nervous, but for Saito it meant he had an audience. [break][break]

The man would first ask Saito a few questions mainly; his name, how long had he been at the academy, and what he was struggling with which Saito had an answer for two for sure, but not the other. So what did he do in these situations? Simple he made it up on the spot. Striking a dynamic pose with both arms arched out like wings of a bird and lifting one leg off the ground he would proclaim, "The wings of justice that fly above the fields of green! A hero in the making who brings light upon the darkest shadows! I am Swallow Tail!" [break][break]

After this little spiel he would take the cape of his outfit and swish it around in a circle as he crouched low to the ground with one leg outstretched behind him and a hand out in front of him. It was a dynamic set of poses to show off his theatrics, but he would still answer the questions given to him by his elder. "Many moons have passed since the Futago twins have descended upon this academy but we both vow to show the world the true dedication and ambition of a hero!" Saito would then arise from his crouched position and regain a normal stance a shinobi would normally take in combat before adding, "The biggest hurdle that comes from this academy is the focus on individual specializations, but rather a general blanket of technics for each student. A future hero must have a signature style or jutsu that sets them above the rest." While Saito did understand why the basics were important his impatience did want him to advance quickly as a student and become the best of the best.

Eiji cocked his head to one side in response to Saito’s… unusual introduction, his face impassive as the boy went on a fairly lengthy spiel about being a hero before, finally, getting to the meat of his answer. Ah. Another young prodigy unhappy with the speed of the Academy’s curriculum. It was a common enough complaint from the Students, most of whom thought becoming a Shinobi would entail learning many destructive Ninjutsu with which to slay their fellows with (not that they’d actually kill them, of course) before walking off into the sunset a hero of the village. He’d had dreams like that, once, but reality had a way of crushing them into the finest of powders.

"I see.” He said, leaning back in his chair as he caressed his chin, a gesture he’d picked up watching an old man he knew. It signified deep thought- or, at least it would to someone as young as Saito. He already knew what needed to be done here, it was simply a matter of how to get the boy to follow the right mental rabbit trail, without veering too far off course.

"While that certainly is an important part of being a Shinobi, I think you underestimate how valuable the Academy techniques are as a foundation.” He paused then, scrunching up his face as thinking harder, only to smile widely as he said, "Perhaps a demonstration would help. Is there any technique you’ve been struggling with recently? I would be happy to show you how to make it work.”

He should have figured his over-the-top dramatics wouldn't phase such a renowned shinobi. Especially since Saito was just a lowly academy student right now. He hadn't made a name for himself just yet so of course his brilliance would go unreconized. Still despite this, the man had a point to his words. The academy did teach the basics because they needed to know them and even though he felt he was above this all it wasn't like he took these lessons for granted. He had learned a few of the techniques already as instructed by the instructors and his peers he just wished for more.[break][break]

Sighing slightly Saito decided to try and lower his more extravagant side to himself and be frank to man. "Honestly the substitution technique has been giving me problems," Saito's tone lost its flurry of words and elegance for a more straight gentle tone. Something more fitting for a student his age instead of an actor on the stage. His arms didn't flourish in dramatics nor did he pose in an extravagant way. This was to show he was a serious person on the inside he just liked to add a bit of flair to his presentation as it was his stamp on the ninja life. To demonstrate the technique he would weave the hand signs for the technique not realizing he made a sight mistake on the dog hand sign having his hands switched in position.

Eiji’s wrinkled face smiled as Saito dropped the act, his face growing somber as he relayed his struggles with the Substitution jutsu. The boy, it seemed, enjoyed acting; more so than most of his peers, for the transformation that came over the Futago was quite dramatic once he stopped pretending, appearing more like a child his own age than a performer hellbent on attention. Saito was honestly unsure about how this was supposed to help since he had the signs down in his mind. He also never gave much thought to what each hand sign meant and did for each jutsu he just followed the instructions in the scrolls they were given to study and the demonstrations they were instructed on. So a theoretical approach to the jutsu certainly wasn't in his wheelhouse of expertise still he was willing to learn if not to just master the ability.[break][break]

"Well," Saito would begin as he named each hand sign while also signaling them. "Tiger, Boar, Ox, Dog, and then Snake. If performed correctly is supposed to replace your body with an object of similar size when a user gets hit by an attack." He still made the same mistake on the dog hand sign as before. "Essentially making it a way to evade attacks and surprise your opponent with an attack from another direction or build space between you and your opponent for a ranged attack." Saito would look at the man confused about the whole jutsu not because it was complicated, but because he felt like he might not have been entirely accurate with his description of the technique.

"Yes… I think I see where you are going wrong.” Eiji said, smiling as he watched the boy perform the hand seals- and again, made the same mistake with the fourth, mirroring where his hands should have been. Without saying anything, the man slowly formed the same hand seals, focusing on a small chair on the other side of the room- only when he did it, he did not make the same mistake as young Saito did, forming the Dog seal properly before letting his chakra fling out towards the chair, instantly switching places with it in a puff of smoke.

"Did you see it, Saito?” He asked once the jutsu had finished, still smiling as he walked back over to the boy, curious to see if he had spotted his own error, or if it would have to be pointed out to him. Either way was fine, but Eiji hoped the Futago would notice it on his own; it was always far less painful for a child to learn of their mistake on their own, rather than having an adult point them out. Particularly one they were obviously trying to impress. He would do it if he had to… but he hoped he wouldn’t.

"Wait what?" Saito said in confusion as he watched the man switch places with a chair after doing the hand seals. Isn't that what he was doing? He was certain he did everything correctly and the same as the man had even demonstrated so what was wrong? Saito looked at his hands thinking maybe he was putting his chakra in wrong or maybe he wasn't concentrating on the object he was switching with, but neither of those made sense in his mind. Looking back up at the man, his confusion evident on his face, he wanted to ask what he did wrong, but at the same time wanted to figure it out on his own.[break][break]

"One second," he would say replaying the scene in his head. With each movement, he would slow down trying to analyze everything as if it was drawn in a scroll. He would even begin to mutter as he mimicked each motion, "Tiger seems right. Boar is correct. Ox. Dog." Saito would pause at the dog and his brow would furrow. "Wait," he would say looking at his hands as he did the sign in conjunction with his memory of what he saw. "Why does it look the same," he would question noticing his right hand being in the position where the man's left hand was in and vice versa for Saito's left. Was that the issue? Saito would look up with hopeful eyes and ask, "Was that it?"

"I think you may have found the issue.” Eiji said, smiling as he nodded towards Saito’s efforts, forming the Dog seal along with the boy just to ensure he saw what the issue was. When the boy looked between them, something seemed to click in the young Futago’s head, a connection made between their two positions, and he asked the all important question- was that it? "Why don’t you try switching your Dog seal around? If it is the issue, you’ll be able to tell quite quickly.”

Eiji paused then, allowing Saito a few moments to prepare his jutsu, watching the lad as he molded his chakra carefully through each hand seal, this time using the correct version of the Dog seal before latching his sights on a nearby object… and immediately switched places with it, the small chair he had chosen appearing where he had stood while the Futago boy landed behind a desk, wobbling in place but there.

"Bravo!” Eiji said, his smile widening as he gave the boy a small clap, allowing him to bask in his success; positive reinforcement was key in teaching rambunctious children like the Futago. Keeping their attention only helped so much- you had to reinforce the good behavior, emphasize their learning through experience, rather than mere memorization. "Well done.”
