Miori Tachibana was a strange sight in the Puppet Corps Headquarters, both due to rarity and her overall appearance. Be it in the past or now, Miori rarely ever actually experimented in the building that had been given to the Puppet Corps, even if it was technically the only authorized place for such testing. But why follow a rule if no one else followed it and it wasn't enforced? Was it even a rule at that point, or an archaic recommendation. Countless puppeteers had their own workshops, and though Miori's was nothing to look at, it was still her safe space. Thus seeing the girl at the headquarters for anything more than a few minutes was a true rarity.

Even when others did see her, her quirk ridden persona made the sight all the stranger. As a child and young adult, Miori's bright yellow hair and usually colorful outfits caught her many strange looks from the other puppeteers. The six arms and overall bad reputation of her 'clan' didn't help either. Now a days though, Miori would almost look generic in Sunagakure, with her now dark tanned skin and brown hair. If it weren't for the fact that she was almost always seen in short shorts, a tank top- and covered in webs- she'd probably look normal!

But the puppet corps' headquarters was one of the few places you could get proper equipment and materials- and the general merchants weren't selling to her anymore. So Miori had to visit more than usual now. Sitting at an empty work bench- vacated the second everyone noticed the Evening Spider was entering the room- Miori was visibly tinkering on a currently deconstructed puppet arm. Valves, cogs, metal cylinders, and countless others bit and baubles surrounded the hyper focused woman as she seemed to be struggling as to how to put the pieces together. This would be so much easier if I knew what her chakra nature was.

The Otori of the Puppet Corps was also something of a social butterfly. Puppeteers were relatively private by nature. Their work was best done when it was done in secret and everyone understood that. There was a mutual respect for the boundaries of a puppeteer's work. Still, as a researcher, that put Shimako in an interesting position. Her work was best done collaboratively. She tinkered and experimented with new ideas to put into puppets and shared those ideas with the rest of the corps to make them stronger. Research sometimes involved peeking in with other puppeteers and trying to get an idea of what they were working on, mining them for inspiration without breaking that delicate puppeteer's code.

She also just enjoyed talking to them, though!

One member of the corps she rarely got the opportunity to speak to was Tachibana Miori, an experienced genin who didn't come around the workshops very frequently. Lately, she'd been coming in to work. Which made it a great time for Shimako to approach and talk to her, get to know her, ask a little about her puppets.

The workroom thinned out, which was a sure sign that Miori had arrived, so Shimako made her way down and peeked in, before coming up to the table.

"Hello there," she greeted, cheery, her disposition as sunny as ever. "What are you working on there?"

Miori was so hyper fixated on her own work that she was uncharacteristically caught off guard by the sudden approach of this random cheery person. One would think that an extrovert meeting another extrovert would be a moment of overwhelming energy. But when one of them was a) considered an accursed person who should be avoided at all times, b) secretly very very depressed and not mentally healthy despite hiding it very well, and c) used to any an all people approaching her doing so just to enforce rules and be assholes- that person would be very very much so taken off guard by such exuberant entrance.

Miori's head would lash around to look at the pinked haired woman next to her, visibly confused as to why she was being approached. If Miori was a bit more active in the puppet corps, she would have likely recognized that the Puppet Corps Researcher was currently speaking to her, a woman who was also the sage of her entire village. But Miori was not known for keeping up on current events, and thus merely saw this extravagant woman talking to her without a care in the world. It was... strange. Not bad, not comforting either, merely this thing was certainly happening. "Hi...." Miori's voice would audibly trail off as she took in the flamboyant appearance of the woman. Shaking her head, Miori was well aware her former fashion choices were needlessly strange. Even her current one was extra in the opposite direction- being almost too casual. Funny how even among the eccentrics I don't fit in. "It's a prosthetic arm."

A prosthetic made from pieces of Miori's former puppet, the skilled puppeteer has made better use of the vacant space within the plates that made up the 'skin' of the puppet. Appearance wise it is a strange creation, covered in pointed sharp edged plates, the limb would seem an almost perfect replication of Tsueno's own arm to the untrained eye. On closer inspection, one might notice key features removed; such as the extra finger. Most notably in it's deconstructed form, one would notice large gaps throughout the arm. Space for a cylinder, a series of web like cloth moving throughout the 'bones' and plate of the arm almost like muscle, as well as a few chakra focusing nodes that Miori had yet to add to the actual arm. It certainly wasn't Tsueno's limb, but it could make for one hell of a prosthetic. "Making it for one of my friends."

Not the most eagerly returned greeting, which took the wind out of Shimako's sails a little, though it wasn't like Miori seemed unhappy to see her. Mostly just confused. Maybe given that the other members of the corps didn't approach her very often, she just wasn't used to this kind of thing? Shimako would have to do her best, then!

As Miori briefly explained what she was working on, Shimako leaned in to get a better glance at it. A prosthetic arm, one of the many uses of puppetry. When medical shinobi couldn't regrow a lost limb, shinobi often looked for replacement, and puppeteers were among the best people to ask after for such things. Even people like the Maikesu existed, who intentionally removed parts of their body to replace them with puppet prosthetics.

More notable than that was how similar it looked to Tsuneo's arm. Shimako had worked alongside Tsuneo on the field before. She'd never gotten close enough to truly examine his components (and it seemed rude to ask anyhow - she wouldn't want anyone asking to see what her insides looked like), but aesthetically, at least, it was quite like it.

"That's nice of you. I'm sure they'll appreciate it. It's an interesting design, too. Did you base it off of Unit 77's framework?" She asked. Now that she thought about it, she thought she'd heard something before about Miori and the legendary Shippai.

Oh she knew about him. A long time ago, Miori was sure she'd be excited to show off her knock off version of the legendary puppet that was Unit 77. A part of her internally cringed at the idea of being proud of that jury rigged attempt at re creating a mythic work of puppet design. Sure the plates looked right, but if anyone paid attention they'd notice the body was too straight, too smooth- something was lost in the attempt at recreation. Heaven forbid someone look at the internals and see the hodgepodge of items shoved in who's sole purpose was to fill the gaps in the puppet's body... oh right she used to be proud that. Acting time.

"It's based on my puppet sevens! I don't have him with me or I'd show you-" Miori would lead with an exaggerated gasp as she ruffled through her tools to pull out a blue print of Sevens, detailing everything that went into it's design; the omni directional joints, the springs and other mechanisms that allowed the puppet to launch itself and opponents, the concerning number of bombs, and most notably the silken lining across the various plates that made up it's body. Externally, Miori would beam with pride at her attempt at recreating the legendary Tsueno of the Shippai clan. Internally she was cringing.

Oh, maybe that was it! Miori had her own little recreation of Unit 77 as a puppet of her own. Shimako was a bit surprised when Miori pulled out the schematics to begin showing them off. She herself was someone who wasn't shy about sharing her designs, considering her position as a researcher for the Puppet Corps made it essentially necessary, but most other puppeteers she knew wouldn't be so open with their secrets. Maybe Miori was just that proud of it? ...Or maybe there just weren't many secrets to keep about the design of the puppet? Either could be the case with something like this.

Either way, Shimako leaned in with great curiosity to inspect the schematics.

The puppet was in no way as mechanically complex as Unit 77 must be to operate like he did, but for a genin creation it was downright impressive in its construction. She smiled as she looked it over.

"The joint work here looks very impressive. This is probably a very mobile puppet - people would be surprised by it being able to strike from any angle," she said. "Especially with those springs. I wouldn't want to be struck by this thing."

She tapped on where the schematic where the bombs were located in the chest cavity.

"You know, I used to do this exact thing. If there's a gap in the design, fill it with bombs. Actually, I'm still guilty of that sometimes," she said, thoughtful. "This is a neat idea for a puppet. Copying a Shippai with such a reputation could lead to confusion on the field."

Miori was admittedly conflicted on the praise of her invention. On one hand, the puppeteer had picked out the few good parts of Miori's puppet. But at the same time, the parts that were excluded stuck out all the more. Besides, it felt patronizing to have such a low quality machine be complimented. In a way it was good it was slowly being recycled. At first there was some comfort given by the fact that this person also did the same- but then Miori realized; she didn't even know who this was. Didn't matter to her, and her youngerself would not have paid attention. So she'd pretend to still be proud of this paper weight.

"I know! Honestly, I'm still struggling to top it!" Miori would proudly proclaim, as she turned back towards the arm she was making. She still couldn't find away to get that chakra blast function into the weapon, and her arm was lesser for it. She had hoped adding it would make up for the removed springs, but every time the chakra blast went off, parts of the fabric she used in place of muscle tore until it was useless. Truly with this one alteration she was struggling to top that poorly made puppet. The fact that this was her rooftop was truly depressing.

Still struggling to top it - which might mean Miori was having some difficulty with this little project here. She was inexperienced and a prosthetic limb could come in many different forms, but if her ally needed a solid replacement she probably wanted to get it as close to perfect as she could. Maybe that was why she was in here instead of at home or in some other workshop. Looking to use the corps' tools, or maybe even silently looking for guidance?

"I've always found the best way to advance your craft is to work with other people," Shimako said. "I was decent when I was by myself in the desert, but I really started getting better when I joined the corps, ah... Fifteen years ago?" She said, after a moment to calculate the time in her head. Had it really been that long already? Wow! "I worked alongside the last head researcher a lot when I was an initiate and seeing all the creative ideas he came up with really inspired me. Then I worked with the master armorer to design most of our current war machines. You can learn a lot from working with other people."

She hoped that Miori could make in-roads with some of the other corps members and share information, and that through that she could grow her skills from there.

Miori would mentally take a callous note to the stranger's own comment. If that was the best way to continue to learn, they should really remember to write that down when recording legendary puppeteers, rather than the obvious signs of genius that everyone ignores until that person is famous. But then came the follow up. By herself... in the desert? Miori was so genuinely take a back, her mimicry of her 'normal' tone would drop to the lower voice she had adopted over time. "You were in the desert?" It was strange to think someone else here had also been in a similar position to her. But... she seemed to socialable to have dealt with the same things Miori and Arashi had been through.

Wait the last head... Oh that's who she was. Miori would pause as she slowly caught up with reality. "Uhh... yeah. I'm... I'm trying to make for the fact that I removed the springs and joints from the arm by adding chakra conductive properties to it. Release bursts from any point to add more power and unpredictable angles." Miori would explain, her old tone returning.

It can only take so many before she'd have to move chakra strings to hold the physical strings together." Miori quietly questioned Shimako's statement about the desert. Shimako wasn't the kind of person who was shy about sharing her life story, so she definitely would've dived right into it if Miori hadn't gotten back on track discussing the puppet arm and what exactly she was trying to accomplish with it.

So she was having some trouble with the musculature remaining in place after it received heavy force from application of chakra. Shimako was no medic, but she knew a decent amount about the muscles of the body just from her time studying puppets and taijutsu.

Leaning in to get a better look, Shimako hummed thoughtfully.

"Part of the issue is probably the, uh... inertia. You know when a cart stops and you keep moving for a second? That kind of thing. The strings are getting the impact of the burst of chakra, and then also the secondary impact of bouncing back once the movement ends. What you could do is create more attachment points for the muscles in order to stabilize them in motion," she offered. "Like if you attach this muscle here... up to this point near the upper part of the prosthetic, where it will attach to the upper arm."

She wasn't sure how probable this next idea was, but she thought she'd recommend it anyways.

"Or you could make the main attachment points of the threads gyroscopic, so that when the arm is in motion the position of the thread remains neutral. Or even make the threads themselves conduct chakra so that they move with the chakra burst and end up with a neutral position as a result."

So that was what was causing the issue. Miori really was ignorant on even the most basic of principles. That should have been the first thing she checked for, and yet it took the head of the entire organization to tell her the obvious. Still wallowing wasn't going to make the issue magically fix itself so Miori began to make edits anyways. A few clicks on hidden latches, the wind of some nobs turning, and the prosthetic arm's panels would open. Looking over the construction, Miori would take a deep breath. Honestly she she wanted to do all three, as on a puppet such unpredictability and flexibility would make any puppet deadly. But the efficient voice in her head knew that would make using this like an actual arm difficult. Some focus would hopefully make this gadget a bit more functional than it was.

Running her fingers along the faux muscle, Miori would trace the design she had already made, repeating the action until she had an exact feel for how the muscles should move. It would be while before she could be able to do this casually- if ever- so now the only way this was getting done correctly was a slow and steady pace. As she felt her pours touch the silk beneath, she would release a steady stream of chakra, creating from nothing new threads of silk around them, connecting each new false sinew to the location to the areas Shimako had pointed out.As she did, wind chakra would flow around the strings, not only infusing the nature into the weapon, but cutting the old muscle mimicry so she could replace it with conductive materials. Slowly Miori would recreate the parts she had dismantled, whilst her free arms would remove the remains of old thread. Nothing she could do with those now.

As she worked the girl would show uncharacteristic focus on her work. Everything around her faded, there was only her creation. Even her own movements would minimize; breathing, pulse, speed. All would slow as her eyes steeled and peered into her creation, taking what was in her mind and making it real. Once she finished, her body would slowly return to a more human speed, before she seemed to abruptly return to her hyperactive persona. Moving to the side, Miori would await appraisal, her eyes returning to their 'usual' gleam. "Well? What do you think? I think it's great. Right!?"

With the advice given, Miori seemed to shift right into focusing on work. She went quiet, seeming tremendously zoned in on the task at hand. She didn't speak or comment, just efficiently going through several of the suggestions that Shimako had made in order to improve the prosthetic limb. She wondered if Miori knew how impressive it was that she could jump right in and make adjustments like that without having to pre-plan them. Even a lot of older puppeteers wouldn't get into the guts of their puppets without sketching a schematic first or something.

Once she'd finished the job, Miori became pumped up and energized again. The stark contrast in behavior, from her quiet focus to that chipper attitude, made Shimako wonder a little if it was put-on. It wasn't like she was someone who could chastise others for being performative (she loved performing), so she wouldn't comment on it, but it did make her curious.

Shimako leaned in to check it out again and nodded, smiling.

"That looks like it will perform much better. Your friend will be delighted to have it. And you got that done astonishingly quickly. Ah, I'm always so happy to meet other talented puppeteers," she hummed.

"You're not around here very often, so I haven't gotten to pester you to see all your work," she joked. "If you ever need help on anything else, let me know."

Miori was surprised to get such praise from the head of the puppet corps. The young puppeteer felt genuine pride in her work. A feeling she hadn't felt since she shut herself away from the world. Maybe scrapping the entire project- her former pride and joy- wasn't the wisest move. She wasn't sure if the senor craftswoman was patronizing her, but Miori knew Shimako was genuine on her appraisal of the weapon. A flipped plate, a few clicks and screws later, and the arm was back to normal. Only one way to find out now.

But you know, better safe that sorry right? That's what my sister always says. So like you wouldn't mind teaching me how to do that would you? I mean assuming you do that, right?" Shimako was maybe expecting Miori to be a little cagey about needing help. Despite being very cheery in conversation, she also seemed like a slightly anti-social person. So it was a fantastic surprise to her when Miori actually expressed that she needed help. In an interesting arena, too!

Taijutsu was something not especially commonly found in puppeteers. However, given their usual propensity for distance fighting, shoring up their close defenses by practicing taijutsu was a really good way to throw opponents off guard. It made total sense to Shimako that Miori would be interested in getting better at this.

"I do know a fair amount about taijutsu," Shimako confirmed, clearly delighted that she was able to be of help here. "I've spent time studying and learning with the hawks. If I hadn't fallen in with puppetry young, I'd probably have been one of those taijutsu specialists," they joked, flexing demonstratively. She wasn't much more muscular than the average shinobi, though - most of her skill was in dexterity and reflexes, really.

"So I'd be more than happy to help." Nothing put the pep in her step quite like helping out younger shinobi. "What do you need to work on? Muscle training? Finding the right style for you? How much experience do you have?" She needed to know if they'd be going back to basics or if she was going to be a more advanced student.

Oh good she actually knows how the hell you fight. The fact that she appearantly learned from 'hawks' threw Miori off for a second, but the girl was certain the 'hawks' were probably just practitioners of a specific taijutsu style. Taijutsu clubs. Go figure. As her thoughts settled, Miori realized was placed in the same conundrum as she was with Ayukawa. She was really at a loss of what to do. She had a bit of experience in taijutsu combat, but she hadn't gotten down fighting alongside her puppet yet. Although she should probably fix her issues with the style itself before implementing both.

As much as she wanted to make her actual experience apparent, Miori didn't need one of the few people with legal authority over her getting involved in her illegal job. "I've had a few spars but not much else. That's actually how I got the idea to make this arm. Not sure on styles or anything like that, but getting fit enough to keep up with others could probably help." Miori would pretend ramble, annoying herself by stalling before the actual point. "None of the workouts have been doing it though. Every time I'm given a problem I just keep thinking of how easy it would be to do with my webs. Weight lifting, push ups, all that."
