There is only one path left to take.

The ruse seemed to work. For now, at least. It at least bought some time for Kasumi to linger a bit and ensure that the Empress was safe. With her injury, she decided to head back towards the gates she just left from. The guards there were on high alert, but definitely recognized her. "I need some medical treatment. Can I enter?"

Reluctantly, the guards moved aside to let Kasumi through. She immediately spotted the Empress who was surrounded by guards. Luckily none seemed suspicious of her. Not yet, at least. Kasumi quickly moved closer, producing some bandages from her pack as she sat as close as she could to the Empress and her guards. Close enough to eavesdrop, at least.

As she wrapped her arm, cleaning the blood and making sure the wound wouldn't get infected, the guards bustled back and fourth trying to gather more information. A few words that stuck out to the Chuunin were 'bandits' and 'he's dead'.

Not that she had any doubts about Toru's ability to finish the mission. She knew he would be flawless. The one thing that did seem to worry her were the side eyes the empress was starting to get. Ones that were starting to flash towards her as well.

Kasumi might need to use the decoy letter after all. She was glad she came prepared.

Kasumi has become known for her strange chakara form. When in a dire situation, she is capable of releasing her chakra, which in turn takes a strange color unlike the normal blue color of chakra, and takes the form of a demonic cat figure. She is then enveloped in a demon shroud.

This ability grants her a fierce looking aura, that may come off as intimidating and a tenacity to push beyond their normal limits physically- when this mode is activated, Kasumi is harder to knock out or kill and will generally fight for longer than a normal body is capable of.

After a bit of meandering down the way, he wasn't really interested in taking forever but he had to make sure he did not return to the village immediately. There needed to be some time, and he needed to come from a direction that made no sense for where the bandits would have been spotted. As he arrived upon the heels of the attack and spread of information he was hearing whispers and eventually as he got up into the line of the gate the guards started stopping people. Toru didn't stop then though, if he left the line now he would look suspicious, so he stood there knowing he needed to get closer to Kasumi in case things went wrong.

"Papers?"

Toru was calm, reaching into his pouch to retrieve forged paperwork to hand to the guard who inspected it.

"What's your reason for your visit?"

"Looking for work with someone."

"Aren't you too young for that, kid?"

"Not too young to be an apprentice."

"Mm..." The paperwork and scroll was handed back with an annoyed look. "Fine."

And he was let through. Toru kept moving then, quickly towards the center, following Kasumi's scent so he could be close and make sure nothing went wrong. For now though he was loitering by a mango stand.

There is only one path left to take.

The time seemed to pass slower than it ever had for the Chuunin, but it wasn't a bad thing. It felt like she was thinking faster than she ever had as well. Seeing the guards eye her. Fingering her decoy letter. The suspicion as the guard recognized her as the courier that had talked to the Empress just moments before the disaster.

"Oi! You! What did you give the lady just before this happened?"

Kasumi didn't even smirk despite the way things played out the way that she had seen it from moments ago. Instead she stood up with confidence, only spying Toru in the crowd now and feeling even better about her play,

"Just this, sir." She gave him the letter. It was a father writing to his daughter. He spoke of love and how much he missed his daughter and wanted to visit. Even asking what days would be good for her if he came by. Demanding a reply sooner rather than later.

It wouldn't be long before that passing suspicion was cleared. Now it was just on the guards that were searching to come to the conclusion that bandits had done this. Then the mission had gone off without a hitch.

Kasumi could only hope that Toru would be satisfied with how she had handled her end of things.

The mango merchant was staring at Toru as if he had lost his mind, mostly because Toru had no idea how to pick out a proper mango so he kept picking up one and then putting it down. It wasn't suspicious, but it also was a little suspicious. Granted, Toru was a teenager and he looked like one too so it definitely helped the situation looking pretty innocent as if he were a teen who didn't know much about mangos. In time the merchant started to assist Toru in the process, and helped him purchase a few mangos that were ripe and perfect for consumption. The little leader handed over some coin and once he was certain that the tension had fallen by the wayside he went to sit under a tree perfectly in Kasumi's eyeline but some distance away so that she could join him when ready.

In the mean time he picked up a stick to mess with, bag of mangos put off to the side as he inspected the stick thinking about what he could whittle it down to in the meantime. He was not some master at whittling but he did on some very small occasion when boredom filled the day - which rarely happened anymore.

There is only one path left to take.

With the guards suspicion quickly fading, and the chaos of the news passing throughout the area... Kasumi couldn't help but think that suspicion of the Empress had cleanly passed. There would be an excuse and alibi for where she was when the whole thing happened. No connection, Kasumi was sure, to any abilities that Toru had used in the killings. It was a perfect situation.

Now, she just had to worry about finding their way out. Kasumi was sure she could leave as she wished- unnoticed by the guards in the chaos. She just needed to make sure that Toru was still fine.

As she had the thought she spotted the boy whittling some stick nearby. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes and sigh in disappointment. He had clearly had the harder part of the mission and finished it with less issues than Kasumi herself did her end. So much for proving herself.

Once they made eye contact, she knew the boy could read lips so she mouthed the words. "I think we're good to go. Meet at the gate?"

She tilted her head at the last part, as if to prove it was a question. She was hardly bold enough to give orders to the Mizukage himself. If he gave a sign of confirmation, she would meet him there, making their escape that much easier.

Kasumi appeared in his eye line soon enough and mouthed about meeting at the gate, to which Toru responded with a subtle motion of his head. She was a shinobi, she should be able to read his exit strategy just fine. They had to meet at the gate opposite of where he had entered initially to avoid suspicion since he had entered under the guise that he was looking for apprentice work and the guard would likely not love to see him exit not long after with some random girl in tow if he had been honest. Which meant they had to exit via a different gate with a different set of guards.

So, Toru tossed the stick aside finding his whittling to be not so inspiring. He tucked away his weapon too and slung the bag of mangoes over his shoulder before working and weaving his way through the crowd pretty casually towards the gate until he was there. Out they went after a quick rendezvous at which Toru waited some ways away before he spoke again, and in that he was just offering a mango to Kasumi since they had a decently long journey back home by sea.

"Hope things went well on your end, I thought I'd buy some mango... Though not really part of the plan." It had not been, but it had been a good enough part of the cover that he had gone through it, and having some fresh mango was always a treat.

There is only one path left to take.

When Toru gave his nod of confirmation, Kasumi stood to move to the gate. She was a little surprised to have headed in the same direction as her Mizukage without even thinking. Kasumi was a ninja, and did have the thought that it'd be suspicious to leave from the same gate that they came in from. Even without the covers, any face seeing them more than once put them at risk.

When they were finally safe enough to speak to each other, the fact that her and the best ninja in the entire village had the same idea hardly even mattered anymore. In fact, she found herself getting a boost of confidence as she was able to give a positive answer.

"No problems on my end." She said, snatching a mango, and giving him a look that made it clear it wouldn't be the only one she took. "I will say though... I think I'm better at more straightforward missions. Feels weird to act all meek and scared. Not that I can't do it, but... sheesh. I like gutting our enemies more than tricking them."

Of course, she was admitting a flaw to her Mizukage, but... well, she had yet to fail a mission so. Perhaps her thoughts on what she was and wasn't good at weren't that important.

Either way, her mood was bright as she chewed the mango with her mouth wide open and they headed towards home from a successful mission.

"A good shinobi knows how to do it all, and you are in an operations position you should be versatile." He remarked with a shrug, reminding Kasumi of what she should be capable of as opposed to her preferences. There was merit in every aspect of being a shinobi. Though everyone had to play to their strengths sometimes it was impossible and one had to play to the mission or job that needed doing. Toru had always preferred stealth in truth, and he did not see it as cowardly at all. He saw it as an art, skillful art. Killing loudly was one thing, killing softly was another.

On they walked, Toru peeling a mango for himself with a kunai and nibbling on smaller pieces unlike Kasumi who was taking whole bites of the fruit. Soon they would reach the docks and board the ship that they had come from and would be on their way, Toru spending the majority of that time staring out into the sea, eating mango or simply taking a nap when the sun had started to dip over the horizon. The sea was endless and beautiful, and he loved to not see land beyond the horizon.
