It was the middle of the night when Nari walked into the training grounds. Stumbled would probably be more accurate, with the bandages he had lining the side of face, neck, and shoulder, healing the burns he had sustained. He probably shouldn’t be out so soon after the bout with Katsuo, but the boy couldn’t get images of the fight out of his head, so he had decided that he needed to do something to keep his brain occupied.

Training would provide that.

Ignoring the warning grumbles of Hisuiyuri, Nari knelt to the ground to pull his boot off. He dug his bare toes into the dirt, loosening it, as he switched feet and did the same with the other boot. He tossed the boots to the side, wincing slightly as he stood back up, the motion pulling at his burns.

He had also taken the, probably unneeded, precaution of choosing one of the smaller, out of the way, training grounds. There was no one out here at this time of night, no one to watch him or bother him. It wasn’t a large space, but it would be sufficient in training some footwork.

Nari was under the belief that if he had been quicker, his movements more controlled, he could have ended the match sooner and prevented the final outcome. But the past was the past, and all he could do now was try to improve so a mistake like that wouldn’t happen again.

  A young member of the scattered Araikettei Clan, Narihira has the ability to wield the strange and powerful Life Blades. He created his own Blade at a young age, under the tutelage of his mother, however, instead of making a sword as was common for the Clan members, Narihira designed his in the shape of a polearm.

  Giving it the name Hisuiyuri, he began learning to properly wield it from the moment he could hold it. Due to the connection the blade shares with him, should it ever be broken, both Narihora and the blade's soul would die, so he keeps it on his person at all times and cares for it meticulously.
• 『Deep Chakra Pool』[break]
  Narihira was lucky to be born with a deeper-than-average chakra pool. It allows him to fight and use jutsu for longer periods of time before he tires, compared to those with average-sized chakra pools. It's especially useful for him, due to the fact that his Life Blade is constantly absorbing chakra from him. But thanks to the depth of his stores, he never feels the strain from that drain unless he has depleted the polearm's stores in combat.
• 『Life Blade Chakra』[break]
  As all Life Blades, Hisuiyuri absorbs Nari's chakra continuously as he carries it around, stacking up a decent amount of chakra inside of itself equal to half its wielder's chakra pool. The chakra becomes Hisuiyuri's and cannot be accessed by anyone other than the spear, allowing it to have the ability to self-repair small nicks and scratches it may obtain during combat.

  It also allows Hisuiyuri to have its own built-in security in case someone other than Nari grabs onto it. Using its futon chakra, sharp blades of wind will strike at the stranger's hands and arms until they release the spear. These gouges are minor cuts but they do sting quite a bit if they manage to hit skin.

  When entering combat, Hisuiyuri will use its own stores to fuel its abilities until it runs out and then will begin taking from Narihira. Thanks to his deeper-than-average chakra pools the wielder and weapon are able to go for a decent length of time-fighting in that state, but eventually, it will cause Nari to lose consciousness if the spear takes too much chakra.
• 『Flying Jades』[break]
  Using its natural affinity to fūton, Hisuiyuri is able to detach the six small jade points that line the sides of its spearhead and allow them to hover. By sacrificing the shredding ability the points usually grant the spear, Narihira is able to fire them off either one-by-one or all at once towards his opponents.

  At it's current skill level, Hisuiyuri's points move at a speed slightly quicker than a regular thrown kunai, due to being powered by fūton chakra and Narihira's able to control the path the points take up to 30m.

He set Hisuiyuri up against one of the training dummies next to his boots. He didn’t want to leave the spear out of his training, but for this part, at least, the spear would hinder more than help. The spear grumbled, but otherwise kept quiet at the slight.

Digging his feet a bit deeper into the dirt, Nari crouched down again and then stood. Down, and then up again. He bent at the waist and reached for his toes, fighting through the pain of his injuries and curling his fingers around his toes once he reached them.

He needed to stretch before he attempted anything, otherwise he would probably end up aggravating his injuries even more than he already would be. Once he stood back up, he twisted at the waist, pulling at one arm with the other before switching to repeat the motion with the other side.

Once he felt limber and the pain in his face and shoulder had dulled down, he crouched down once again and placed his fingers against the ground. There was a beat, Nari exhaling into the chilled night air, before he took off.

It was at a speed much slower than his normal pace, but he wanted to start small, so he could go longer than if he went all out right from the get go. But he would eventually see how far he could push himself before his injuries decided enough was enough.

Nari decided to do short sprints. He would run to a point along the length of the training ground, quickly lean down to tap the ground, and then run back to the start. Then he would turn back and run to a further point, and repeat the motion.

That would, probably, help him get his reaction time up and help with his speed. He had entered this Exam thinking he would have it in the bag, but both the first and second parts of the test had shown him otherwise. He needed to be faster. Quicker.

Once, twice, three rounds, not even at full speed and Nari could already feel an ache starting to set into his muscles. That fact just served to irritate him. He’d done this sort of workout before, it shouldn’t be affecting him already, even with injuries. The boy grit his teeth and pushed on aiming for a farther point than he had just returned from.

He reached the point, tapping the ground with his fingers and shoved off to run back to the start. At the start he paused, bracing his hands on his knees breathing sharply in and out through his nose. He couldn’t stop yet, one more set before he was allowed to rest.

Barely a few seconds and he launched off again, aiming for the other end of the training ground. Reaching the end of the lane, he slapped his hand against the ground, pivoting and shooting back in the other way. Well, shooting might not have been the best choice, it felt more sluggish to him than anything, but he was going none-the-less.

Once back at the start, he heaved out a heavy breath through gritted teeth, bent over with his hands on his knees. His face and shoulder were burning in irritation, as if they were on fire all over again. It was painful, and annoying, and served to spur him on even more. He needed to keep going.

Hisuiyuri’s voice said as it entered his mind. Nari shot a glare at the spear, not wanting that chastisement.

"It’s just some burns, I should be able to push through that for a bit of running," he hissed through breaths.

Pushing against his knees, Nari forced himself up straight again, moving to stand at his starting point again, rolling his shoulder to try and make the burning feeling go away. It didn’t. If anything, it seemed to get a little worse. Shaking his head, Nari braced himself, digging his feet into the dirt again and resumed his sprints.

He decided to go all the way to the end of the training ground first this time around, doing the routine in reverse. This time, to spite the pain radiating on his side, he put more speed into his running, trying to finish quicker than he had done the time before.

Nari put his eyes on the line in front of him now, focusing all his energy into digging his feet in and pushing off strong to get along. He was going to do this. He had to. The line was there, he bent over, slapping the ground again and pivoting back to head back to the other lane.

He felt sweat forming on his neck; already? He tried not to get too frustrated, but failed. He hadn’t even made it halfway through his second set before the burns forced him to stop, the pain radiating so much that it bypassed burning and felt like ice against his skin.

No stopping. Not yet. The boy pushed himself further, grunting as he sprinted he reached forward, slapping the ground against and turning around.

He made it back to Hisuiyuri and nearly collapsed to the ground, only saving himself by leaning his good side heavily against the training dummy. Nari reached up and peeled the bandages from his face and neck, even the barely-there weight of them was too much for him at the moment.

  Narihira was lucky to be born with a deeper-than-average chakra pool. It allows him to fight and use jutsu for longer periods of time before he tires, compared to those with average-sized chakra pools. It's especially useful for him, due to the fact that his Life Blade is constantly absorbing chakra from him. But thanks to the depth of his stores, he never feels the strain from that drain unless he has depleted the polearm's stores in combat.

  As all Life Blades, Hisuiyuri absorbs Nari's chakra continuously as he carries it around, stacking up a decent amount of chakra inside of itself equal to half its wielder's chakra pool. The chakra becomes Hisuiyuri's and cannot be accessed by anyone other than the spear, allowing it to have the ability to self-repair small nicks and scratches it may obtain during combat.

Using its futon chakra, sharp blades of wind will strike at the stranger's hands and arms until they release the spear.   When entering combat, Hisuiyuri will use its own stores to fuel its abilities until it runs out and then will begin taking from Narihira. Nari pushed off the training dummy and grabbed Hisuiyuri, sliding the spear back into its holster on his back. The added weight would help push his muscles even more. Even with the worry radiating from Hisuiyuri across their link, the boy ignored it.

He stood at his starting point and pushed off, running towards the first point, leaning, tapping, and turning around. The chilled night air did wonders against the heat of his now exposed burns and the minor relief allowed him to breeze through the first three points. Sweat dripped from his hairline causing the air to chill his skin as well, it felt fantastic.

Nari slapped the ground and ran back to the starting, his feet burning from the exertion and the fact that they were bare, but he still knew he wasn’t going to stop. His breathing was still heavy, but he forced himself to hold each breath in for a few seconds before exhaling. It calmed him, making his frustration slowly ebb away.

He kept going. Starting at the dummy and running the set, adding more speed with each pass. Nari’s tight muscles weren’t in so much pain anymore as they loosened up and he focused on breathing, pushing through any pain he felt. His attention was solely on the next line ahead of him, allowing the thoughts of the Exams and Katsuo and his own mistakes fade into the background.

Nari decided he had two more laps to do, but even that felt like forever away. These sprints were killing him. Sure, his muscles had limbered up a bit but the dull pain was still there. He tapped the ground and ran back to the start. Two, three, four.

He was getting closer to the end of the lane. He narrowed his eyes, gritting his teeth as he pushed himself forward towards the end of the lane. Once he was there he only had to do one more set. That would be easy, right? No issues at all doing that.

There it was, there was the final line. He took his final step towards it, bending over, and grunting as he did so, feeling something split on his shoulder - probably a blister bursting. He turned on the ball of his foot and sprinted the final length of the field.

He’d been counting them all along and hadn’t even realized it. Normally, Nari would laugh, thinking that it was an odd thing to be focused on, the number of steps, but right now he was thankful for the distraction the counting brought.

One, two, three reps done. He could feel fire in his quads as he pushed himself, the strain pulling on the muscles.

How many steps was he at now? Twenty-five? It was interesting how now that he was paying attention he couldn’t keep track. Perhaps this wouldn’t be good training for his mind. He could feel each step reverberate up his leg and into his spine as his bare feet struck the earth.

Now what was the number? It didn’t really matter now as he slapped his hand on the ground at the fifth line. He was nearing the end, the finish line was right there. Pain lanced into his body from his injured shoulder, even though that hadn’t been the one to strike the ground. It made Nari sharply suck in a breath, but he managed to keep himself from letting out the pained groan that threatened to escape.

Slowly rolling onto his front, careful of the burn and Hisuiyuri, he exhaled a soft chuckle. Breathing heavily, he smiled. He was sufficiently exhausted and was pretty sure he had split open the burned skin on his shoulder, but he had managed to complete what he had wanted to do. Tucking his legs under him and clenching his core muscles, Nari forced himself up into a kneeling position without using his arms for support, they would probably give out, if he was being honest.

Are you quite finished trying to injure yourself? Hisuiyuri didn’t sound the least bit impressed with its wielder. You should return to the hospital. Nari rolled his eyes and climbed up to stand.

"Not yet," he told the spear, "I want to try something else before we go back."

He removed the spear from its holster for a second time and set it up to lean against the training dummy again. "We’re gonna fire the jades at me and I’m gonna dodge them."

Disbelief and anger ran down the link between him and the spear. Hisuiyuri was not happy about this idea, at all. Absolutely not. You’re already bleeding, I’m not contributing to shedding more of your blood.

  A young member of the scattered Araikettei Clan, Narihira has the ability to wield the strange and powerful Life Blades. He created his own Blade at a young age, under the tutelage of his mother, however, instead of making a sword as was common for the Clan members, Narihira designed his in the shape of a polearm.

  Giving it the name Hisuiyuri, he began learning to properly wield it from the moment he could hold it. Due to the connection the blade shares with him, should it ever be broken, both Narihora and the blade's soul would die, so he keeps it on his person at all times and cares for it meticulously.
• 『Deep Chakra Pool』[break]
  Narihira was lucky to be born with a deeper-than-average chakra pool. It allows him to fight and use jutsu for longer periods of time before he tires, compared to those with average-sized chakra pools. It's especially useful for him, due to the fact that his Life Blade is constantly absorbing chakra from him. But thanks to the depth of his stores, he never feels the strain from that drain unless he has depleted the polearm's stores in combat.
• 『Life Blade Chakra』[break]
  As all Life Blades, Hisuiyuri absorbs Nari's chakra continuously as he carries it around, stacking up a decent amount of chakra inside of itself equal to half its wielder's chakra pool. The chakra becomes Hisuiyuri's and cannot be accessed by anyone other than the spear, allowing it to have the ability to self-repair small nicks and scratches it may obtain during combat.

  It also allows Hisuiyuri to have its own built-in security in case someone other than Nari grabs onto it. Using its futon chakra, sharp blades of wind will strike at the stranger's hands and arms until they release the spear. These gouges are minor cuts but they do sting quite a bit if they manage to hit skin.

  When entering combat, Hisuiyuri will use its own stores to fuel its abilities until it runs out and then will begin taking from Narihira. Thanks to his deeper-than-average chakra pools the wielder and weapon are able to go for a decent length of time-fighting in that state, but eventually, it will cause Nari to lose consciousness if the spear takes too much chakra.
• 『Flying Jades』[break]
  Using its natural affinity to fūton, Hisuiyuri is able to detach the six small jade points that line the sides of its spearhead and allow them to hover. By sacrificing the shredding ability the points usually grant the spear, Narihira is able to fire them off either one-by-one or all at once towards his opponents.

  At it's current skill level, Hisuiyuri's points move at a speed slightly quicker than a regular thrown kunai, due to being powered by fūton chakra and Narihira's able to control the path the points take up to 30m.

Nari tilted his head and looked at his bad arm. Huh. Sure enough, a thin trickle of blood was running down the length from beneath the sleeve. He decided to ignore that little detail, it wasn’t like he was gonna bleed out from it.

"We need to do this while I’m exhausted, Hisuiyuri," Nari said. "That way I’ll be able to do it during the next part of the exams, if it comes to that point."

The spear was silent for a moment, before letting out a sigh of resignation across the link and one of the jades came loose and began hovering in front of it. You get injured, we’re done. Understood?

"Yes, dad," Nari said with a grin as he dug the ball of his foot into the dirt and awaited the knife to come hurtling towards him.

And waited. Nari was sure that Hisuiyuri was just doing this to annoy him in retaliation for being reckless. Or it could have changed its mind about helping him. Or - oh heck.

Just as he got the idea of the spear giving up on him, the knife launched forward. It was all Nari could do to spin out of the way, stepping to the side to make sure the jade point didn’t slice into his arm. He still felt the air as it whizzed by.

The spear gave him a moment to recover, letting the jade return to its starting point. But then there were two jades hurtling towards him. He grit his teeth and shifted quickly out of the way of the first one and ducked down under the second one.

So the spear definitely wasn’t pulling its metaphorical punches.

The twin jades flew back, returning to their spot at the base of Hisuiyuri’s blade and just as quickly the spear sent out three of the points to hurtle towards him. The teen twisted on the balls of his feet, moving left to dodge the first, then right to dodge the second, and narrowly getting out of the way of the third by rapidly backpedaling.

"More, Hisuiyuri," he said through heaving breaths. "Faster this time." His legs and feet were burning from the exertion, but Nari knew he still had some more left in the tank.

The spear grumbled, anxious worry radiating down their link, but seemed to acquiesce to its wielder’s wishes. Four jade points detached from its base to hover menacingly.

They sprung forwards, faster than before, just like he had asked. Nari quickly moved to get out of their paths before they could strike them. Keeping on the balls of his feet, he skipped left, right, left, dodging the fastest of the two points.

The third snuck up on him again, but this time he avoided it by quickly spinning on his feet over to the left and continued his spin out of the way of the fourth jade.

He wasn’t expecting a fifth jade, but it seemed Hisuiyuri was taking his order of "more" to heart. Nari yelped as he quickly spun around to the right to dodge it as it almost nicked his cheek. Then there was the sixth jade.

That one completely came from left field and he didn’t even register it until he twisted directly into its path. He tried to get out of the way, but he wasn’t quite quick enough and the blade sliced into his injured shoulder, sending cold shockwaves of pain throughout his body. It hurt enough that Nari let out a pained shout through his gritted teeth and slumped to his knees, holding onto his arm just beneath the burn, as if it would stop the pain.

He let out pants of breath as he waited for the aftershocks to dull - he could feel his pulse throughout his entire body. Everything felt like it was made from jelly, standing up right now would be a futile effort.

A smug sense of satisfaction traveled through the link, the sound of Hisuiyuri 'tsk'-ing at him filled his mind. Are you quite finished destroying yourself now?

Nari nodded, not even having the energy to snark back at the spear. He was tired and hurting, but at least he wasn’t thinking about all the stuff he had been before. The only thoughts running through his head were OW and getting into bed.

Once he could make his legs move, Nari stood up and collected Hisuiyuri and his boots. Time to go back to the hospital and get an earful from the healers while they patched him up once again. Then he probably would sleep for an entire week.
