The last few strokes of An’s black-inked pen touched the white paper of the notebook, noting the few things that were written quite neatly on the blackboard by the teacher before the long-awaited bell, informing the students and the teacher of the end of today's classes. "That will be all for today, finish writing down everything that is on the blackboard and you are free to go,” the stern-looking teacher said, before leaving the still quiet classroom full of young shinobi all bent down trying their best to finish copying everything that was on the board as fast as possible.

Usually, most of the kids would just dart out of the classroom as quickly as they could, without really paying attention to their teachers, but this man was known to be strict, yet fair at the same time, as exams mostly contained the things he had talked and especially wrote out on the blackboard. One by one the students started to pack their things into their differently shaped and colorful backpacks, as they had finished the task, the young Gure including. "An, do you wanna go somewhere and eat some snacks?” a cheerful-looking girl, who was seated next to An asked. "Ah, sorry, not today," she answered as her palms came together before her face forming an apologetic manner, "I already planned to go to the training hall and practice something.” The other student waited for the light-eyed girl to elaborate on her answer, especially the "something” part but as An didn't continue her classmate understood, "Ah, okay. Then another time, see you tomorrow!” The jolly classmate waved her hand as she and a few other girls, who had been waiting at the wooden doors of the classroom, went their way.

An decided to double-check her backpack and her desk for anything she might have forgotten to put away before taking her training katana which had been wrapped in a soft cloth and heading out of the room. The almost evening sky and the trees outside the building made for a quite the scenic view as the young girl made her way thru the numerous corridors the academy had until she reached one of many training halls that was located inside the building itself, as the outside had a huge outdoor training ground, where many new and already seasoned shinobis gathered to practice their crafts or just have some friendly or maybe not so friendly spars.

The indoor hall that An entered had many weapons on display, for the youngling to try their hand at different types of weapons. As academy students were shinobis in making it was a wise decision to let the kids experience and familiarize themselves with all kinds of styles of bukijutsu. But today, the young girl had come here with a specific weapon in mind. It was not a popular choice as compared to many other types of weapons, it might not be the most practical, yet An felt that she might be quite compatible with it. Her eyes scanned the available options until they landed on the one - the tessen. A tessen was a type of fan, it had different shapes and sizes, and styles, which was used in combat, compared to the one An usually carried with her, a dancing fan.

It appears that the academy went to great lengths to provide the young kids with as many options as possible. The tessen segment had a wide range of sizes, from exceedingly large to small and light, akin to An's dancing fan. Because the light-haired girl had a little structure, larger versions of tessens were out of the question, and the girl honestly believed that they would not match her essence very well. As a result, she headed straight to the smaller tessen portion, which was much more familiar to her. Because the only way to tell if one is compatible with a particular weapon is to handle it and check it out, the An decided to go through each one and find which one she was most compatible with. Though they all appeared similar, and most certainly were, the young Gure girl still had the need to test them one by one and find the one she believes is the one for her.

As she took each one in her hands, folding and playing a little bit with each, getting a feel for their weight and shape, she eventually discovered the appropriate fit for her after about 10 minutes or so.

The ability that An wanted to practice today was a simple technique, but it needed a good deal of chakra control, which the young learner was still struggling with. Hayauchi, or a quick draw, is a skill designed specifically for persons who use or plan to use tessen. To summarize the notion "by forcing chakra into the hinge of the fan, the tessenjutsu user causes the fan to open or close almost instantly, mimicking the mechanical skill without actually requiring dexterity outside of basic tessenjutsu training”, is what An had memorized from the recent bukijutsu class where she had seen the skill being used.

Putting her chakra into something wasn't a problem, but controlling the area where it should go into and stay was something new to her, but as hardworking as the young Gurē was, this was something she would come to enjoy learning, at least that was the way An tried to look at it.

There is no better way to learn something than try doing it yourself. Slowly but surely she put a very small amount of her chakra into the object, but as expected it spread out everywhere. The girl let out a small sight that only she herself could hear.

First thing first, she should learn to limit the area to which her chakra spreads, for this particular skill it should concentrate on the hinge of this weapon.

Holding the fan in her right hand, her eyes almost glued to it, while her body gathered a small amount of her chakra in her palm. Slowly An started to release her chakra into the tessen’s hinge, but it did not take long for it to start going all the way to other parts of the weapon. Not this time! She thought to herself as she tried to pull the spread and put chakra back, closer to her hand. After a good amount of failures the young light-haired girl, it seems, was able to grasp the way of holding her essence in one spot.

Alas, she got happy too fast, as at the moment she relaxed her focus for a mere second, the chakra like a stream that was trying to fill all the corners of a dried-out river, spilled out of the hinge into the carcass of the item.

An was not one to give up easily, her persistence helped her understand the way to trap the necessary amount of chakra in the hinge after a few hours of failure and some successes. For some, it might be long, while for some fast, but for An all that mattered was to master the basics to perfection. It was no chance at all that her nindo was "Practice makes perfect.”

Once the first step was mastered, she decided to move on to the second stage, opening the fan. Theoretically, it should not be hard, no it might even be more convenient than doing it manually, as it would shorten the time and stamina needed to do that, but practically for someone who had yet mastered the skill it was no easy task.

As An held the chakra in its place in the hinge as per instructions and tips, she remembered from the bukijutsu class, she quickly but precisely pushed the chakra that was sitting in one spot in the said area, as if she had pushed some kind of button, to open the tessen.

After a good amount of practice, in an hour or so she had understood the principle behind opening it and felt quite comfortable doing so. With the opening technique mastered, An felt a surge of confidence. She could now perform a quick draw with her tessen, albeit with a limited range. It was progress, nonetheless, and she knew that with continued practice, she would be able to improve her control and extend the distance of the opening.

It was a small victory, but it fueled her determination. She continued to refine her technique, making minute adjustments until the tessen closed swiftly and precisely.
