Appearances were important. Appearances were everything. It was a sentiment that was drilled into each Kuronmeru from a young age. They were the superior Clan in the Village and one had to project that image at all times. Actions only gave half the picture. The rest of the blanks were filled out by how people viewed you.

And, apparently, some in the family hadn’t been fulfilling their duties.

Inei didn’t know what he had done to pull this particular short straw, but it was apparently his responsibility to drag his feral cat of a younger brother out into the city and show people that they were the regal princes they were supposed to be.

Of course, they could only get out into the city if said younger brother would wake up on time. Inei was trying to play nice, not wanting to upset the parents this early, but Enyo was making it difficult. It was time to get things moving.

Entering the younger boy’s room, near-silently, the elder Kuronmeru sighed in disappointment at seeing Enyo still asleep, all comfy cozy in his bed. If Inei knew his brother, it was all appearance and the boy was probably tense, with his hidden blade under his pillow. That was how Inei slept, anyway. Boring.

Shoving his foot underneath the mattress, Inei kicked with all his strength, sending the futon mat tumbling and definitely waking its occupant. He waited for the reaction, on the defense, even though his stance was loose and relaxed.

"Morning, baby brother," he said, all bubbly and cheerful. "Parents say we’re going out to the city today. Get ready."

Enyo was one to fall into deep sleeps once he had positioned himself just right within his bed. He always had the window slightly open in the summer allowing cool air to flow into his bedroom which was adorned in beautiful blues and purples. A few miscellaneous items and decorations were hung upon the walls. It spoke of a little prince, though the few weapons displayed spoke of a little more than that. A prince obsessed with not only appearances but also a touch of violence.

This was hardly discouraged in this particular household, though, so he kept them up a threatening display.

The genin was unaware of the desires that were made by his parents that morning and he was not one to wake up early if he did not have to. With nothing on the docket he had made an intentional plan to continue sleeping, his entire upper half bare from the summer heat, the blankets shoved down one arm over his head while the other was firmly concealed under the pillow, concealing something else in the process - a fumei ha.

The littler of the two did not notice his brother walk in, nor expect the sudden and extremely rude awakening as he was in the midst of a particularly delightful dream of stabbing someone that he did not like repeatedly in the leg. Which meant that the kick and tumble into a nearby wall was particularly jarring for the young Kuronmeru when he landed face first against a nearby wall.

Standing as quickly as his groggy reflexes would allow him he was alarmed, and his fumei ha fully displayed as he slowly came into awareness of the fact that his brother had kicked him.

"Huh? I'll get you ready, ready to go the hospital." He hissed not so pleasantly as he often did.

To Inei’s surprise, Enyo seemed to have been in a deep sleep rather than the expected light one. He surmised the kid was either really brave or really dumb to sleep soundly while in the compound. Probably dumb. At least the knife was there, so Inei hadn’t been completely wrong about Enyo’s sleeping situation.

He smiled at his younger brother’s threat, completely unphased by it. It wasn’t the first time the boy had threatened to send Inei to the hospital. He had yet to follow through with the threat though. Normally, Inei would goad the boy into attacking, and then violently put him down. But today was different and Inei wasn’t going to detour from his plans and risk the wrath of his parents.

"Not today, you’re not," he said sharply. He flicked out his own hidden blade in case Enyo tried anything despite the circumstances. "This comes from father and mother directly, so either get ready or go complain to them."

Talking back was basically a death wish and all of the brothers knew better than to argue with their parents.

"We’re going out, whether you like or not, Enyo," Inei said, straightening up but not retracting his blade, waiting to see what the boy would do.

Enyo was cold - he realized - now that he had been kicked out of his bed so roughly and unceremoniously. He was staring, still quite sharply and aggressively towards Inei annoyed by the circumstance. The fumei ha was shown and he glanced towards it, before he was back to meeting Inei's own gaze somewhere in the middle. The orders came from their parents, and that was not an order to be trifled with. Enyo stood slowly, retracting his blade from its sheath with a flick of his wrist as he stared at his older brother. His guard dropping a bit as he folded his arms across his bare chest, sneering.

"Fine, but are you going dressed like that?" It was an insult to his brother's outfit, since he was not supposed to attack him or do anything particularly violent today it seemed. They were supposed to go out and be seen or something like this. This was not the first time their mother and father had given them such orders. He knew better than to anger them and frankly he didn't want to end up with a bunch of bloody cuts from his brother either if he tried to argue the topic more.

"I'll get ready, just get out and fix yourself. You look like an ugly pirate."

Wake up call successful. Inei rolled his eyes at Enyo’s insults. No matter what the boy thought, he knew his appearance was fine. The only reason most people associated it with a pirate-like appearance was due to the eyepatch and Inei’s work with the Suiryu Butai. Take those away and he’d be considered just as regal as any of the other Kuronmeru. Unlike the feral brat who was currently standing half-naked in the middle of his room.

"Don’t take too long getting pretty, princess," he sneered as he left the room, waggling his fingers in a mocking wave and sheathing his hidden blade. He didn’t mind turning his back on the boy now. Enyo wouldn’t attack, now that he knew Inei was working under parents’ orders rather than his own malice.

He didn’t go far though. Inei waited just outside Enyo’s door, just in case the brat decided to try and be rebellious and go out the window. Part of him hoped he would, just because it would be fun to have to dole out the punishment for such actions.

As he waited for Enyo to emerge from his room, the older Kuronmeru checked to make sure all the parts of his outfit were perfect. Ugly pirate, his little brother had called him, but the appearance had served Inei well over the years, getting him what he wanted. Enyo just wasn’t experienced enough with the world to realize that.

Being called a princess didn't really bother Enyo as much as Inei might have hoped it would. He took great pride in his appearance - and most Kuronmeru did - so he felt absolutely no shame in getting ready as long as it was necessary, because he wanted to look absolutely perfect and beautiful for the world to see. It was how he was almost every day, his vanity was rarely surpassed. He liked to see himself in reflections passing by, to see just how beautiful he was. How much *better* he was than everyone else around him. The result of perfect genetics, the best of breeding.

So once he was ready, with his hair tucked and brushed just so and his outfit with all the right accessories and color pops, he slid the door to his bedroom open and stepped out, shoving past Inei quite aggressively to go towards the front door of their family home so he could slide into his sandals.

"Well hurry up now!" He announced petulantly, clearly reversing the roles between the two of them. Making it seem as if Inei was the irresponsible and slow one in comparison to him - who was clearly perfect in every way.

Inei’s hopes that Enyo would give him a reason to use violence was dashed when the boy came swaggering out of his room all prim and proper. Then the younger rushed past him, as if he hadn’t been the one trying to sleep in.

He gave a scoff at the cheek of his younger brother, but followed nonetheless. His hand twitched reflexively, wanting to strike Enyo as he passed, but he pulled back. He had a duty to fulfill today, afterall. He would have to play nice, no matter what he thought the brat he was stuck with deserved.

It was still rather early in the day, but there were enough people out that they would see the brothers as they emerged from the compound and made their way into the Village proper.

Inei didn’t have a set plan for the day, he honestly just wanted it over as quickly as possible. Make an appearance, prove that they weren’t the rabid, rage-driven neanderthals that some people thought they were, go home and continue with his training. That was the extent of his plans.

He supposed he could follow Enyo, see what the kid wanted to do, but that idea just put a sour taste in his mouth. Anything Enyo would find enjoyable would probably be torture for him. He’d have to come up with something quickly to avoid that.

Lo and behold, the duo passed an apparel shop. He did need a new jacket, after one of the old ones had gotten roughed up during training. Might as well see what they had to offer within.

"Enyo," he called out to his brother. "We’re stopping here." And he did, turning to walk into the store without so much as glancing to see if Enyo obeyed or not. The boy knew the consequences if he caused too much trouble, after all.

It was well known that the Kuronmeru were quite cruel, their family was perhaps the worst of them all. Some thought the worst of them, but in Enyo's mind, they were the best - and frankly some feared them for all of what they were. Rightfully so. Regardless Enyo understood the power of being sighted not in fact trying to kill each other in public. It created a certain illusion around them, that they might be the very noble people that they tried to make themselves out to be. The noble clan that Enyo wholeheartedly believed he was born into.

Noble. Not barbaric.

Inei was not going to lead this expedition though, until he did. And commanded Enyo to stop, they were going to look at what was inside this little apparel shop. Annoyed that he was given a command, Enyo felt a prickle of distaste, but paused. He knew better than to disobey in such a scenario. But there was a hint of impatience in his body as he rolled his shoulder around.

Was he supposed to stand around outside and wait for his brother? No.

So he didn't. He wandered into the apparel shop after Inei to inspect what had his brother so interested in this little dinky spot in the first place. Enyo padded up behind Inei, wearing a small smile. Not the kind he used to wear when he was exuberantly and genuinely curious about what his brother was doing, but rather a venomous smile. A mask. He leaned in close to observe.

"Whatcha looking at, huh?"

He entered the small store without checking to see if Enyo was following him. While small, the place seemed to be rather high end. Which was good, because if he had walked into some hole in the wall, there would have been problems.

Inei moved directly over to the displays that had jackets on them, looking over them with a critical eye. Everything was individually handmade apparently and with high quality materials.

Enyo popped up then, grinning like a cheshire cat, asking about what Inei was looking at. Inei didn’t believe for a second that the boy was being sincere in his query, so he just looked at him like he was an idiot pointing out the obvious. Which he was.

Grabbing one of the definite "no”s off its display, he shoved it at Enyo and dropping it over the younger’s head. He didn’t have the patience to deal with his brother’s attempts to be cheeky.

He looked back at the displays and pulled a few options from the stands. They were currently in their "one-size-fits-all” state, so he would need to get them taken in so they fit him perfectly.

"Are you going to look around, or just stand there like a training dummy?" he said, looking at Enyo as he moved over to one of the store’s workers.

With something being dropped over Enyo, the boy prickled and grabbed at the fabric with feverish fingers to shove it back where it was supposed to be refraining from kicking Inei in the shins in the process. Honestly, what was he thinking? That small almost faltered, but instead it turned to a small smile of annoyance even if remained steadfast upon his features.

"It's ugly in here," He responded with a bit of bite to his tone. Though it was hushed as to not openly offend the store employee, mostly to keep up good graces for the clan than anything else. Not that the Kuronmeru were known for their good graces.

The genin cleared his throat and looked around briefly.

"Everything here looks like what you put on, ugly pirate." He hissed. Enyo himself preferred beautiful, luxurious silks for his kimonos, yukatas and traditional wear. To some degree he actually very much looked down on Inei for foregoing such beautiful clothes for more simple pieces... Jackets and trousers, what peasantry often wore. What Enyo wore was a symbol of nobility in his mind so of course it was something he felt he had over on Inei. And something he would hold against the older brother until the day he died.
