Uzumaki Ichigoni usually only came to Kirigakure for one reason: to meet with the Gensui-kaigun-taishō to report the western fleet’s progress, get briefings to raise his situational awareness of naval activities, and to receive missions to distribute to his Kaigun-shōsa. Whenever he came into the village, the Uzumaki found himself in awe of how much things had changed. When he was last stationed in the village, it was in shambles from the attack of a demon.

The Grand Admiral’s gave him a strange goodbye this time. Ordering him to head to Crescent Lake for a surprise combat evaluation. Something about their manner of speaking caught Ichigoni off guard, they looked like they were grinning through their teeth at him. He suspected some sort of mischief was afoot, and they would not tell him who would be giving the evaluation or any further details.

Arriving at the shores of the lake himself, he peered through the haze of the day in search of who his evaluator might be. Not spotting them immediately, he rubbed his chin. Maybe they meant that he should actually be out on the lake itself?

Channeling chakra into his feet, the jounin traveled out onto the water. He took the time to prepare himself while he waited. First, he began forming hand seals for some time. On his forehead, beneath the headband, a diamond shape appeared. Then, he lightly quinched his right arm and a meter long metal stake dropped down from the sleeve of his Suiryu Ryodan jacket and into his hand. He rested it over his shoulder as he waited.

As soon as the Mizukage might appear, the surprised admiral would kneel, pushing chakra into his knee to keep afloat on the surface of the water. "Lord Eighth,” he would say in acknowledgement. "It is you who I am to face, then?”

He seemed calm and collected, but there was no doubt that his heart had begun racing.

To be pierced by this metal-rending spear is to activate the sealing effects of its nature, as it quickly binds to and paralyzes the actions of the surrounding body parts. The stake itself actually fails to wound its target, despite how it may appear, only petrifying the tissues surrounding the seal. This works to immobilize the enemy, as a single stake to one's limbs or torso is enough to turn a fight against their favor. Implied by the name, the user may also create and launched a stake from their body, manifesting as an unexpected flying projectile with sealing capabilities. When added into another seal, this technique acts as a temporary paralyzing defense mechanism against those who physically tamper with the benefitted seal, save for its user. This includes outside threats as well as those within the seal, preventing captives from releasing themselves through rudimentary means.

The day was warm as summer days often were, Toru had given the majority of the office the day off - though one bodyguard always dutifully lingered in spite of his suggestion for such a nice day - so that they might enjoy what sunlight that the village did receive hidden in the misty mountains. Warmth was regarded as a blessing in some manner, and the sunlight more so as its golden rays poked holes through the iron clad mist that blanketed the area. The village was not called hidden in the mist for no reason, it truly had the perfect storm of ingredients to almost always have a coating. Though the visibility altered depending on how warm or cool it was.

The warmth of the summer day mixed with the cool air blowing from the mountains with sunlight on this day meant a strange but beautiful light show of mist and golden sun, though visibility lower to the ground and in lower areas in general was quite grim. Many had rooftops that they could enjoy the sun on, a trend that had caught on in the last several years with the improvement of the economy and more leisure days.

This 'off day' meant Toru was free to wander to Crescent Lake where he had bid one of his trusted jounin meet him - Uzumaki Ichigoni.

It was strange to call an Uzumaki trusted and among his ranks, but Toru was certain that he had a loyal mind and steadfast body. It was why he was going to privy of the battle that they would have today.

The young leader wandered out onto the lake, perhaps running a little late as he stepped over the water's edge, his chakra and footsteps causing the softest ripples. He had a naturally soft almost silent step, but without any attempts being made an attuned mind would hear him approach - especially since it was harder to dampen sound on the water's surface.

The man kneeled before him and Toru gestured for him to rise.

"Yes, but there is no need for such formality." He put one hand on his hip and observed Ichigoni. "Do you have any questions before we begin?"

A thousand questions ran through Uzumaki's mind. At the forefront he wanted to know why he was being evaluated? Why was the kage the one evaluating him? If he had done something wrong? Was he being considered for something? But these were selfish questions, and Ichigoni refused to let insecurity rule him.

Those questions would answer themselves in due time. One did not get to speak to the Mizukage every day, especially when they were at sea more often than shore.

"Just one, sir. The units under my command in the western fleet handle much of the burden of national security in day to day operations, and they do not often come to Kirigakure to hear the words of their supreme leader,” he said. Pausing for a moment to rise as he’d been given leave to. "What would you say to them if we had a chance to get them together in one place? What wisdom would you impart?”

Well, that was two. But he didn’t bother to correct himself. Instead he waited patiently to see how Toru would respond. If it was something great, he would be able to use the words as part of his motivational speeches as he toured each ship throughout the next few months.

"Perhaps I should come to the West to give my word," Toru remarked in passing. It was a surprising question, he did not give inspiring speeches often. Only when it was asked of him, and the things he thought of to say and wrote down were only things that he would want to hear as a soldier. He wanted a feeling of support as a soldier, to know that the leader was there, and that the leader cared. Toru did care, but he was so busy sometimes it was hard to spread oneself as thin as a puddle to try and please everyone. There was a constant need for Toru's presence as Daimyo and Mizukage in every aspect of the nation.

"Tell them that I am always with them. Tell them that they are among the best in the world, for we have the strongest navy and why should I not have my strongest out at sea... Tell them to reflect upon themselves as they would on the water's surface. A warrior must know themself, and their enemy so that if they enter a thousand battles they will carry a thousand victories."

That seemed sufficient, though he was uncertain if it was very inspiring.

Toru looked down towards the lake's surface where they stood.

"Are you ready then for our spar? We should do well to push each other, but not use deadly force."

Ichigoni listened intently to the mizukage’s words. It was good material and he could feed it to his captains during tours and give them words of inspiration from their leader. He nodded in approval of the words.

"Thank you, Mizukage-sama. Although your presence would be most welcome, I will pass your words on to the fleet. I’ll make sure every sailor in my command gets to hear your message.”

Toru shifted the conversation back to the spar. The Uzumaki felt nervous, holding no illusion that the young age of the Mizukage meant anything. They were in a world where children often surpassed the power of adults, and to be elevated to leadership likely meant he was even stronger than an adult pick for the job might have been. How would he hold up against the best in the village?

Deadly force wasn’t to be used, something that he understood well. "My main weapon does not cause injury. I am ready to begin.”

To begin the spar, Ichigoni moved ten meters back and then bowed, and waited for the Mizukage to return the gesture. Beneath his sleeve he flexed his forearm and a rod of chakra slid down from it. He grasped it with his right hand and began spinning the sealing stake in slow gyrations while intently watching the Mizukage to see what his first move would be.

DESCRIPTION:
The user is capable of maintaining incredible momentum with their polearm by twisting and twirling it in their hands. By rotating their hands, arms and body in various ways, they can twirl and spin the polearm around their body in large circles. Doing this works as a functional defense capable of slapping away mundane blows and projectiles. This can also act as a powerful offense, delivering sweeping strikes backed by the momentum of the spins.

Toru gave Ichigoni a nod, if that was good enough for him then it was good enough for Toru. He had not come with words of wisdom or inspiration in mind so it was a little off the cuff in some regard. Perhaps he could have a meeting with the council about some naval visitations later on for words of inspiration and perhaps some joint missions so that the navy could see their leader working alongside them. That usually lifted spirits, especially when one was looking at water for months on end something new was just that - something new.

The leader was about to move but Ichigoni did so first it took a moment to create that much distance between them but it was actually quite sufficient. Once the man bowed Toru reciprocated the gesture silently.

"What I am about to do, please do not fear it... Or speak of it to your men." He hoped that would be enough, Ichigoni was loyal of this Toru was certain - he had proven himself as such over his years and all the files that Toru had read of him it was quite obvious where his loyalty lied but not everyone needed the information that was about to be shown.

With that said, Toru released the seal inside of himself and a red shroud with one tail immediately came out of him like a flame. His body took on an animalistic form immediately. With this activation, Toru would perform one hand seal within his sleeve and a thicker - much thicker - mist would roll into the area until the visibility was null.

Kirigakure no Jutsu [Hidden Mist Technique]

Version 1 Tail 1 Shroud Form

A singular tail now appears from the chakra shroud, Toru begins to gain features that resemble the Sanbi. The ominously red boiling chakra gets thicker, and getting close to Toru is painful as if the chakra itself burns the air all around at a low heat. Speed - now rivaling the speed of a taijutsu sole - and strength is boosted. Toru can move at these speeds on all fours, though with his control over this shroud he can stand on his legs all the same. The cloak allows Toru to tuck and roll to utilize some of the Sanbi's shell techniques. Furthermore, Toru is able to control the chakra shroud by shooting out chakra arms that can lash out at targets that are further away. All passive abilities are amplified - especially durability that now begins to allow Toru to tank most attacks that come his way, entirely unaffected by anything that is not explosively powerful in nature. Toru also has the natural ability to breathe underwater in this shroud, and his suiton abilities are powered up as he is able to expel bursts of water from his mouth.

The Uzumkai nodded in agreement, although what came next was a total surprise to him. Before even the mist came, the air began to permeate with a strange feeling. One that he had felt before, but he couldn’t remember from what. The white orb that remained under his eye patch started to feel like it was burning.

"What is this ninjutsu?” he spoke outloud, though he didn’t expect to receive a response. The mizukage’s body seemed to be almost chitinous beneath a boiling red shroud of energy that heated the water around it.

Seeing hand seals forming in the Mizukage’s hands, Ichigoni quickly channeled wind chakra into his glove and tossed the sealing stake towards Toru with punishing speed. He wouldn’t get to see the results because of the coming mists.

After the throw he took in a deep breath and let go of the chakra at his feet to plunge into the water where the mist couldn’t permeate. He knew he would have to take every advantage he could think of if he were to stand any sort of chance.

The lake water itself wasn’t entirely clear, murky enough that visibility only went out to about five meters or so before things started to get hazy. He’d look for ripples in the water in hopes of denying Toru any sort of surprise.

Toru had impeccable reflexes so even as the mist rolled in, all he needed was to see the flash of something flying towards him, he stepped out of the way. Side-stepping in such a way that his muscles basically contracted only for him to move not even a foot to the right. It was only enough to allow the weapon to fly by without piercing him. Since he could not identify the weapon itself he felt it was best to not be struck by it especially within the first several moments of the spar itself.

Unfortunately as the mist rolled in, Toru soon realized that he could not smell Ichigoni within it. That meant something was afoot - the man other disappeared into the mist, or disappeared into the water. There were not too many places to hide around here after all, especially not from Toru's sense of smell. So, Toru did immediately what any sensible opponent would do, not allow for the element of surprise to be turned against him. He was quite adept at making sure it was always on his side, he had even found a way to fool the Sharingan.

So another set of hand seals quickly with one hand before he disappeared quite literally into the mist. Now there would be nothing for Ichigoni to see - not even ripples.

Toru has impeccable control over his body and muscles, to the point that he appears as if he might be dancing around his opponents with mockery. Not only quick on his feet, but he also seems to have the reflexes to go along with his speed. It takes a similarly lithe and feline-like opponent to land a proper hit on the small boy. An elite jounin with similar speed and reflexes - and proper training - can tire Toru out properly enough to do so, or perhaps a jounin although it may take longer - as long as they have this same training. Toru is a slimy opponent and is difficult to pin down.

DESCRIPTION:
Similiarly to the hiding in water technique the user becomes the vapor all around them, effectively disappearing into the mist entirely. However, unlike the hiding in water technique, the user does not have to remain still as the fogs nature is mobile. This utilizes the Kirigakure shinobi's full deadliness, allowing them to get in close and assassinate in silence. However, being attacked, hit or have any significant physical pressure applied the user will immediately become visible. For this technique to work, there must be rather heavy mist already present in the area, or the user must cast either the hidden mist or advanced hidden mist technique.

There was no sign of Toru, and Ichigoni could not spot any movements on the surface of the water above. In a position like this, he would lose the waiting game because he could only hold his breath with a jutsu for so long.

Ichigoni was sure the mizukage could handle himself enough that even if this next technique worked, there wouldn’t be a life threatening danger that he couldn’t put an end to if he needed to. Weaving a string of hand seals, the Uzumaki beneath the water raised his hand up and pushed a discharge of chakra into it. The water directly above him would begin to rotate and pull with a violent current.

He’d learned the technique from his father, who was known to some as the "Shipwreck Priest”. The ability to create a whirlpool had been passed down in his family for generations, part of the namesake of the lands that they hailed from.

He was trying to get his opponent out of the mists above with the area of effect technique, to pull him down to the bed of the lake with him where the mist couldn’t be used to his advantage. Another chakra rod slid into his hand as he waited in the epicenter. Throwing would be useless right now because of the current, but arming himself seemed wise nonetheless.

The whirlpool was a touch unexpected, not because Toru was unaware of it's existence as a technique but rather because he didn't expect it to be performed in the moment. It tilted him, causing him to reappear, but the speed with which it was bringing him down to the epicenter was just as shocking as the technique itself. Finding his footing and using a bit of the water walking technique, Toru quite literally forced his feet to stabilize and his legs to stay sturdy enough to surf down to the bottom of the lake - which was really far down - or at least approximately to where the whirlpool ended it's movement to the bottom.

Generally speaking, Toru also was aware of how to pull out of a whirlpool, there was a very plain technique to it that could also be used on real whirlpools, though this was definitely quite a bit more powerful.

If Ichigoni wasn't fast enough he might just get hit by Toru's entire body coming down the pipe, and that would have been a very unpleasant seeing as Toru's body was harder than a diamond coming down at a high speed. It would be akin to being pelted by something harder than a boulder at quite a high speed.

Ichigoni watched as the Mizukage surfed atop his whirlpool, using it to descend towards him at an insane speed. His eyes widened, and the only thing that he could do in the moment was raise his manifested chakra rod and hold it forwards to ready against the charge. That was one of the benefits of spears, one didn’t have to be the fastest, and could use a foe's speed against them.

When Toru made contact with him, Ichigoni could not tell if the chakra rod successfully impaled Toru’s left thigh, or if it got knocked away. Either way, he got hit hard and it tossed him down onto the bed of the lake. He nearly cried out in pain, but managed to maintain his discipline: if he had let his breath expel he’d have lost the jutsu letting him fight underwater.

His chest throbbed with pain, but Ichigoni was too stubborn to give up after one blow. He got ahold of his bearings and swam near the bottom, keeping an eye on Toru. The mizukage might notice that he didn’t create another chakra stake this time. He was trying to determine if the previous one had gotten through and petrified the tissue beneath Toru’s left leg first before making his next move.

Due to the slightly messy way by which the stake made contact against Toru it did not manage to penetrate, between the fact that Ichigoni was standing in water - making movement slower - and Toru's extreme durability it seemed it would require a bit more to actually make its way into his flesh. It came to no surprise as Toru was likely - though this was more definitive than simply a guess - the most durable thing in the world that was living and breathing.

It definitely made for any impact to be made quite a bit more difficult. Though this came as an advantage to Toru, he knew he still had to be careful. He was unsure of what the properties of those chakra rods were, and he wasn't one wanting to find out. He would have to rely on his bukijutsu, speed and reflexes to make sure that he could parry them out of the way appropriately.

Once at the bottom of the whirlpool with his opponent knocked down, he stabilized himself, finding his footing as he took a deep breath within his cloak, staring at the man underwater.

With Ichigoni having restabilized himself, Toru would do the next big move to drive Ichigoni further away and also to keep him on his toes in an attempt to keep him from performing too many jutsu here as well.

He pushed a palm forward and from his palm a driving force of beautiful coral sprouted from the ground, it would move towards Ichigoni quickly not stunted in speed in the water since it was ripping from the ground as opposed to being thrown in the air, it was a series of spikes intending to impale.

Things were getting difficult for Ichigoni in this battle, especially with this wound in his chest, though what was one to expect from Lord Mizukage? Still, he wasn't about to give up just because his attacks couldn't penetrate their ultimate defense, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to try. He had to have a weakness or some sort of blind spot he could take advantage of, but the question was what? Determination being his guiding factor he would look for some way to put up a good fight for his Lord.[break][break]

The biggest issue now was the lack of preparation Lord Mizukage was giving him. Keeping him on his toes forcing him to not have much of a reaction time to their techniques made things even more difficult. So the series of spikes coming his way was going to prove to be deadly. Activating his future time seal release he would make use of his sealed jutsu underwater submarine voyage to move about the water freely to narrowly avoid most of the spikes. A few of them caused some gashes and nicks to his body, but nothing he couldn't handle as he let his determination and drive keep him going. [break][break]

Letting his momentum carry him Ichigoni would once again create another stake. He would then place the attraction seal on this stake before chucking the stake like a javelin at Toru in hopes of wedging it in his body while he prepared for another attack. It was a very risky move, but if it worked he could gain the advantage in this battle, if he didn't he would be playing cat and omuse with eh Mizukage just for his survival.[break][break]

The user grips their javelin firmly before launching it towards the opponent with incredible strength and speed, enough to pierce straight through an entire boulder. The strength of the attack allows the javelin to match up to low tier ninjutsu such as fire balls, waves of water or large boulders and even electrical or wind based attacks, and using its piercing power allow it to strike right through such techniques and into the opponent. Needless to say this tech can allow a javelin user to pierce right through an opponent or even a group of them, and the speed allows it to fly as if one threw a kunai.

To Toru it was only a slight disappointment that Ichigoni managed to dodge the spikes, but it was also par for the course considering that the man was a jounin and nothing less was expected of him. Toru, would not lay off putting on the pressure though... Except for when Ichigoni prepared another stake and tossed it at Toru.

In this case the water was slowing the stake down enough that the Mizukage would swing his sword in an arc, deflecting the stake with the flat side of the katana so that it could essentially sink to the bottom of the lake that they were standing in. But he did not wait for it to languish and look so defeated at the bottom of the lake, instead he diverted his attention immediately towards Ichigoni, at the end of the sword's arc.

All Ichigoni would see of the leader's face would be his eyes, laser focused, as the shroud moved like a living breathing being around him, before sending a large arm with claws out towards the naval captain, and if he was not particularly large he would find himself being grabbed - literally - by the arm, before being smashed right into the sandy-dirty lake floor.

There was no avoiding it, Ichigoni was snatched up by the arm. He felt an intense heat on his body before he was slammed on the lake’s floor. He let out some of his held breath, tasting salt water on his tongue. Through sheer discipline he maintained enough air to last him just a little longer.

There was something sitting at the back of Ichigoni’s mind. Something familiar. Something disturbing. Though the sting in his back was prevalent, but the heat he felt was a part of a puzzle piece that came together with the coral. Coral that had once claimed an eye.

The monster that took his eye and the Mizukage were related. Perhaps even one and the same. Maybe he had been sent here to be the monster’s next meal. He couldn’t plea for answers within the depths of the lake. But the distress in his eye looked worried beyond a simple spar.

He needed to surface, so after being slammed down he did the only thing he could think of and formed the seals for a body flicker. The water above him erupted and he landed on the surface using water walking, finding himself standing in the blanket of mist that he had tried to avoid beforehand.

Ichigoni kept as still and quiet as he could, hoping to buy some time to regain his breath.
