Despite the fact that he was going to meet the same group of friends, the joyous thrill never waned. And who could blame him? He was a kid and it was fun! Zipping through the green lands with tall grass and mud, Shō effortlessly maneuvered through familiar terrain until he reached the flat area where most people lived and grew paddy rice. Unlike them, Shō's family lived near higher ground and woods, cultivating mushrooms and medicines. As he walked along the poorly maintained road, passing numerous residences, his attention was captivated by a larger than usual wooden house, the only two-storey building in the village, symbolizing wealth and power.

Kiki!” Despite the peaceful atmosphere of the sparsely populated area, he had to raise his voice to ensure his friends, who were heavy sleepers, could hear him. He learned this painfully during a previous sleepover when even shouting outside their room’s door failed to wake them up.

"Do I have a choice?” Shō responded, giving her a bewildered face as he entered the house. The interior was just as magnificent as the exterior. Unlike the other houses, this wooden structure exuded grandeur. The living room boasted tatami mats and a few zaisu positioned at the center. If only his friends weren't occupied with bathing and getting dressed, Shō would have made his way to their room. While the living room was impressive, it felt somewhat awkward to remain there alone.

His cousin chose the powerful and mighty Tiger, Haruka was the Phoenix since she was the only girl in the group, and Natsuki became the Tortoise due to his slow nature. Obviously he did complain a bit but to no avail. The whole thing may have seemed cheesy and cringe-y, but they were just kids, after all.

During the summer celebration, mask-wearing was a prominent tradition. Everyone would don masks during the nighttime festivities, with some opting for full masks and others choosing half masks as they strolled through the streets. At least, that's what Haruka had told him, as he could barely remember what had happened last year. But one thing he knew for sure was that Haruka was very disappointed and unhappy.

You see, only men were permitted to wear masks during the festival, leaving women to rely on makeup to partake in the revelry. Haruka had voiced her discontent throughout the year, and Shō was determined to grant her the wish. He had prepared a set of traditional boy's kimono, coupled with the mask he was crafting. When Haruka wore the disguise, nobody would suspect her true identity.

Snow Ear, Caterpillar Fungus, Shiitake Mushroom, Maitake Mushroom… Shō had lost count of the precious fungi he had secretly planted out of his father's knowledge. God knows what would happen if he was caught. But he was not regretting. When summer arrived, he planned to harvest the fungi and prepare a delightful dinner and dessert for everyone. He remembered vividly that Haruka had a particular fondness for Snow Ear mushrooms, so he made sure to plant an abundance of them.

The scene darkened and then snapped back to life. Colourful surroundings filled Shō's vision as he opened his eyes. It was a dream again. He always wondered why human could not differentiate dream from reality until they were awaken... Well, it was not really a concern for now. His afternoon nap had been short lived. Loud noises could be heard even from their distance. Toma woke up soon after Shō, and even the twins who were otherwise heavy sleepers followed as the screams grew louder.

Confusion filled the air, and Natsuki was the first to break the silence. "What... What's happening?" From their vantage point on higher ground, they could see villagers running around and smoke rising from the watchpost. Haruka and Toma rushed to comfort the panicked Natsuki.

This was the first time they had met such an incident. Shō did not know what exactly was going on, but he sensed it was something terrible.
