The familiar sights greeted Touwa as he walked into the classroom—the neat rows of desks, the expansive view of the outside landscape, and even the empty seat next to his own. However, a single change hung in the air like a storm cloud—Touwa's attitude toward this particular class. What had once been an enjoyable experience in the Jungle Survival curriculum had turned into something entirely different this year, all due to the new teacher, Hotaru Tadashi—Touwa's own father.

To say their relationship was strained would be a grave understatement; it was fractured in ways that words could hardly capture. Touwa struggled to comprehend why the Head Academy Instructor, with his multitude of responsibilities, would decide to teach a class—especially one in which his own son was a participant. Did he deliberately choose this path? Touwa had been mastering the art of evading his father's presence quite successfully, until now.

"Hey, you're pretty lucky, you know? Having your dad as the teacher must mean straight A's for you," Touwa's seatmate teased, unknowingly rubbing salt in the wound. The irritation that had been simmering within Touwa only intensified. "Just drop it," he retorted sharply, his gaze returning to the window, his thoughts a tumultuous mix of frustration and longing. He couldn't help but daydream about escaping this class altogether if only his deep-seated sense of responsibility toward his clan didn't hold him captive.

The ringing of the bell echoed through the room, signaling the start of the class. Yet, Touwa remained resolute in his defiance, fixated on the world beyond the window pane.

He had planned for this for a long time and it had finally been approved by the board. While as head of the academy, he could simply just do things at his own will he felt some responsibility to do things by the book and even if this was just a way for him to get close to his son this was still his job and training the minds of the youth was something he was going to do properly. This lesson would entail the use of surviving in the jungle and while Tadashi had no problem doing this due to his many years as a shinobi the children might not have the same abilities. He was certain most of them didn't know much about surviving with practically nothing. So this would be a twofold lesson and he was excited for the second part, to say the least.

The students would be the first to arrive as he wanted to make sure everything was set up for the lesson before he made his appearance in the classroom. His frame was giant in comparison to all the children in the class he took stock of those in the lesson spotting his son staring out the window practically giving him the cold shoulder. He couldn't blame him though after all the years he was absent in his son's life and he was only now trying to get back into it after all the mistakes he made. Still, he wouldn't want to embarrass him by calling out to him so he let him be for now. Once behind the instructor's desk, he would call the role for each student on the roster and once everyone was present and accounted for he would begin the lesson.

"Alright let's get things started," Tadashi would say clapping his hands after putting down the attendance sheet. Turning to the chalkboard he would start by writing his name, "My name is Hotaru Tadashi and I will be your instructor for this term of Jungle Survival." Once his name was written on the board he would turn his attention back to the class and ask them a question, "Who can tell me the fundamentals of surviving in the jungle?" This was an open-ended question that had no real wrong answers for those who paid attention to past lectures, but this was how he was gonna scale his lessons on each of their abilities and knowledge sets.

Touwa continued to stare out of the window, his frustration mounting as his father, Hotaru Tadashi, began the class. He couldn't believe his father was really going through with this, teaching a subject that was once his favorite and had now become a source of discomfort and embarrassment.

As Tadashi wrote his name on the chalkboard and asked about the fundamentals of surviving in the jungle, Touwa felt a surge of anger mixed with a twinge of longing. He wanted to be anywhere but here, forced to confront his strained relationship with his father in front of his peers. Still, a part of him couldn't deny that he needed to learn these skills for the sake of his clan, no matter how much it felt like a betrayal of his true feelings.

With a reluctant sigh, Touwa finally turned his attention away from the window and reluctantly raised his hand. "Surviving in the jungle requires adaptability," he said, his voice tinged with a hint of bitterness. "You need to be able to find food and water, build shelter, and avoid dangerous wildlife. It's about being resourceful and learning to rely on your instincts." His gaze briefly flickered towards his father, a mixture of resentment and a faint glimmer of hope in his eyes. Maybe, just maybe, this class would be an opportunity for them to bridge the gap that had grown between them over the years.

The one to answer his question was, in fact, his son which gave Tadashi a speck of happiness to know his son was willing to participate. He was even more proud of him for giving a good answer to his question so gold star for him! Though he could sense the bitterness in his son's voice and while that made him sad he decided not to dwell on it. No matter his relationship with his son and his determination to mend their broken relationship this was still a class he was teaching. He needed to show decorum and an unbiased learning environment. Still, he couldn't help himself as he said, "Very good Tokonatsu-kun." Tadashi would then turn back to the board and write down the word readability as he would hide his smile with his turned back.

Facing the class again he would begin pacing the front of the room before continuing, "Being able to look at your surroundings and figure out a plan on how to both get out of the environment you are in and living in it are vital to your survival. This information carries over outside of jungle survival too and with some modifications to the rules of survival to fit the environment one can survive even in harsh deserts or out at sea." Tadashi would look over at each student in turn in an attempt to make sure he was keeping each of their attention before continuing. "A main rule to follow is the acronym STOP." Turning to the board he would write the four letters and explain them in turn, "The S is as the word says to stop. From there, you go to T which stands for think. One must always calm themselves and not let fear get the best of them so think about where you are and your goals for survival. O stands for observing. This means looking at your surroundings and seeing what's at your disposal and what can signify your location. Is it safe to step up camp here? Is there a source of water nearby? What is there to eat and what animals might be nearby to provide a food source? Looking at your surroundings can give you a lot of information about your survival and it is key to take it all in."

Tadashi would then write the final letter before turning back to the class and finishing up the acronym explanation. "That leads to P which stands for plan. You need to be levelheaded and make sure you can take the information from your observation and figure out a survival plan. While at times you can wing it in the wilderness without a plan you could cause yourself to be in a situation without food, water, or shelter. At which point your body will begin to fight itself and you could end up losing both your mind and life if you aren't careful." Looking at the children in the class he would ask another question to see who was paying attention. "Now who can tell me what is the first and most important resource one needs when surviving in the jungle? Bonus points if you can also tell me what you can learn from this resource."

Touwa listened intently to his father's explanation of the STOP acronym, trying his best to focus on the lesson and put aside his lingering resentment. When Tadashi posed the question about the most important resource in jungle survival, Touwa raised his hand once again. He felt a mix of determination and a desire to prove himself to his father.

"The most important resource in jungle survival is water," he answered, his voice steadier this time. "Water is essential for hydration and can also provide clues about your location. You can often find water sources near low-lying areas or by following the presence of certain plants and animals. The presence of certain insects or the sound of flowing water can guide you toward a potential water source. But you also need to be cautious because stagnant water can carry diseases, so it's important to purify it before drinking. It's not just about finding water; it's about making sure it's safe to drink."

His words served as both a response to the question at hand and a subtle message directed towards his father. Touwa aimed to convey that he embodied the quintessential behavior of a true Tokonatsu, highlighting that he hadn't inherited any traits from his father's clan, albeit in reality, Tadashi was not responsible for this fact or was he. However, the underlying sense of resentment and his deep-seated desire to grow closer to his father constantly clashed within him.

To say Tadashi was proud of Touwa was an understatement. Even if there was some slight sting to his words due to the fact Tadashi did not influence how his son grew up. Something Tadashi did regret practically every as of late, but he couldn't change the past and all he could do now was try and repair their relationship the best he could. Smoothering the child was probably the worst course of action he could take especially in front of his peers in school. No, he would need to keep things professional while at the academy, but maybe when they got home they could try and rekindle their bond and make up for lost time.

This thought was more than enough to keep Tadashi going as he smiled at Touwa and responded with, "Excellent work Tokonatsu-kun!" Turning back around he would begin writing on the board emphasizing the importance of water. "As Tokonatsu-kun has mentioned water is a resource one has to have to survive. One can go about three weeks without food, but without water one will find they will perish within three days. Yet how do we know if the water is safe to drink?" Tadashi would question the class before adding, "We don't. Lots of creatures drink from the water, others use it as a place to relieve themselves, and others simply wander in and out of it, that's also not including the creatures that live within its waters."

Tadashi would draw different pictures of animals who used the water as a part of their ecosystem. "So we have to figure out a way to make this water drinkable for us so would anyone like tell me how one can do this and if you don't have the tools available on you to do it manually where in nature you can get the tools?" He would look towards Touwa a bit before scanning the class to see who would answer this question, but he simply wanted Touwa to answer as letting him shine in class seemed to be something that might just help their bond grow.

"However, if we don't have the tools at our disposal, we can utilize nature itself. Large leaves or even a piece of cloth can act as a filter to strain out the larger impurities. Charcoal from a fire can also serve as a natural purification method by absorbing toxins from the water."

"Correct again Tokonatsu-kun! Been doing your homework I see," Tadashi would say giving the boy a smile to show both his acknowledgment of his answer and a sort of pride in his son's ability and knowledge. Even if the two had a strained relationship at the very least Tadahsi can say the boy was knowledgeable and that alone was enough to make him a proud father. Turning back to the chalkboard he would draw out a schematic of the options Touwa mentioned with lines pounting to each object. These lines would have small notes explaining what they did for the purification process and he would answer any questions the other children had on them.

Once this section was complete Tadashi would begin the next section of the lesson. "Alright now that we got the theoretical application of jungle survival out of the way let's go about a practical setting." He would put his chalk down and wipe his hand of leftover debris before adding, "If you will follow me we shall be doing a quick training exercise in the forest nearby." Waving a hand for his students to follow he would lead them to the forest where a volunteer instructor would be waiting for them. A woman with green hair in tight curls in a yellow body suit with a webbing motif to it. Once all the students were present Tadashi would begin speaking, "This is Chiba Sensei she will be assisting with the evaluation of your jungle survival skills." Tadashi would then let the woman take her turn to instruct the students.

Chiba sensei would clear her throat and with a surprisingly whimsical voice say, "Alright students Hotaru Sensei here has given me the rundown of the lesson you all will be learning today as such we will be pairing you each up with another student to practice the techniques you learned in class." Chiba would then take out a clipboard and begin naming off the student pairs leaving Touwa as the only student by themselves. Noticing this Chiba would turn to Tadashi and give him a slight glare wondering if he planned this. Tadashi would dart his eyes away as he looked over the other students to try and hide his innocence. Grumbling to herself and how childish this was of Tadashi she would approach Touwa and ask, "We are at an odd number of students so I'm going to give you a choice you can either attempt this lesson on your own or you can have Hotaru Sensei be your partner for this exercise." She would then lean in close to the boy and ask, "Though don't let him do anything if you take that option as it a lesson for you and not for him."

Chiba Sensei gave Touwa a warm smile and a slight nod at his answer as she returned to Tadashi's side while he began handing out the unique scenarios to each student keeping the one his son would be undergoing on his hoping that the boy did choose him as a partner after all. Once these instructions were all handed out and Touwa had approached Tadashi Chiba would then direct the class into the forest where their exercise would begin.

As they all walked into the forest they would stop at a clearing where Chiba sensei would say, "Alright you may now read your instructions and begin your scenarios now." With that Chiba sensei would then begin walking around the area to see how each student was doing since she was now the primary instructor with Tadahsi now acting as a student partner for Touwa.

Tadashi would smile at Touwa and hand the instructions to him with a smile saying, "I'm only here as an extra body so feel free to direct me as you wish." This was Tadashi's way of saying he was letting Touwa decide the fate of this lesson and though he wanted to take control of it himself he felt for the education process it would be best if he held back. The scenario the two of them would be following is as such:

While returning home from a completed mission your partner suddenly becomes ill. Your objective is to figure out the cause of the illness and treat it.

Tadashi knew what was in the instructions since he made them and once he was certain Touwa had read it he would then fall to the ground pretending to be under the illness Touwa would be trying to solve. While he couldn't imitate all the symptoms he would give verbal or visual clues to help him. The first clue he would give Touwa is shivering saying, "So c-c-cold" It wouldn't be much to go on right away, but each step would be different for Touwa to figure out and Tadahsi would give new clues each time he came closer and closer to the answer and solution.

"Cold... could it be exposure to the elements?" he muttered to himself, contemplating the possibilities. He began checking Tadashi for signs of exposure, looking for any wet clothing or evidence of prolonged exposure to harsh weather. "Exposure to the elements is a possibility, but the scenario also mentions 'returning home from a completed mission," Touwa mused, thinking aloud as he continued his examination. "Could it be something related to the mission? Perhaps a foreign substance or a reaction to something encountered during the mission?"

"Could it be something he ate or drank?" Touwa continued to ponder aloud, considering the broader factors that could contribute to the simulated illness.

"Let's consider what we encountered during the mission," he said, his tone a mix of concentration and determination. "First, did you ingest any unusual plants or substances?" Touwa's questioning was methodical, a reflection of the survival lessons he had absorbed over the years.

Honestly acting the part of someone sick wasn't that hard for Tadashi since most shinobi had to be convincing in their espionage skills, but with his son being the one doing the prognosis he couldn't help but want to push him forward to the correct answer. However, he also had this sort of nagging feeling inside of him when his son spoke. He was almost like a medical professional with how he spoke and it reminded Tadashi of Yukari. This put a little bit of sourness on this experience to Tadashi as it reminded him of their falling out and all the rough times they have had.

Yet at the same time, it also reminded him of the good times they had together. Like when they first met and how his heart would flutter in her presence. How it seemed like they would be together forever. Well technically they still were together so they might as well have been, but their hearts were no longer in it and if it weren't for both of their clans they would be completely separated. This saddened Tadashi cause that meant he would be completely out of his son Touwa's life so at the very least he had this grain of salt he could call his silver lining.

He began getting so lost in his memories that he almost forgot about the lesson. Only being brought back to attention when Touwa asked him if he ate anything unusual plants or substances. To which Tadashi put up his best sick voice, "Just some blackberries we found when we set up camp the day before." He didn't want to give too much information since this was a test for Touwa after all, but he wanted to make sure he was giving the information as needed for the lesson. "I should be fine though so please just get me some water," Tadashi would add to give a clue on the severity of his symptoms.

He was on the right track and honestly, Tadashi was happy for his son to be doing so well on the lesson. Sure it wasn't that hard of one especially since this one might have had the easiest practical solution of all the other survival scenarios the other classmates got, but it was just as important to know. "Hurry back," Tadashi would say weakly as Touwa ran off to get the water he requested and while the boy was away Tadashi would look over to see how the rest of the class was doing.[break][break]

He would catch eyes with Chiba sensei would would glare at him and shake her head as if telling him not to check up on the other students since they were under her jurisdiction now. He should focus on the task in front of him and since he was playing the victim he should act like one. Tadashi would give her a smile that said he was sorry before turning back to how he was facing when Touwa left while he awaited his beloved son to return.[break][break]

After some time Touwa would return with a container of water which he would hand to Tadashi who would take it acting weakly to give the lesson scenario a bit more relaisim. Shakily he would open it and begin taking a drink and right away Tadashi could tell this wasn't fully filtered, but it wasn't contaminated as badly as it could be. So it was technically safe, but it would mean a demerit to his overall score. After a few chugs, Tadashi would begin coughing to simulate someone drinking too fast. After finishing his coughing fit Tadashi would stand up and say, "Good analysis and overall solution to the problem at hand. Slight demerit for not filtering the water itself for safety precautions, but overall still a good job Tokonatsu-kun." [break][break]

Handing the canister back to Touwa he would smile at him before saying, "You are dismissed for the day for completing your task and I hope you found the lesson to some degree helpful to your education as a shinobi." Looking over his shoulder to see if the other students were looking he would bend over and address Touwa in secret and say, "I'm proud of you son and I wish you luck with your other classes." He would return to his standing position and finish up by saying, "I'm going to be checking up on the other students now so enjoy the rest of your day Tokonatsu-kun." He would give his son a wink before heading over to Chiba to get a status report on how the other students were doing.
