Kobashi felt the sharp throbbing in his hand from the cut on his palm, but more than that he felt the blade lose what force had been pushing on it until eventually Hisao's hand had fully dropped from the blade. Kobashi's eyes watched unblinking, trying to peer into the mind of Hisao almost in an effort to see if his lesson had been understood.

Judging from the outburst that shortly followed it seemed to fall on deaf ears at that moment. Kobashi was undeterred however and simply maintained his stare towards the boy before him. Kobashi said nothing further, he made no movement and expressed little emotion beyond a stern gaze which conveyed he had no plans to be argued with on this matter. Heartbeats passed by and silence filled the air before finally Hisao said that he understood. Whether it had been the words earlier finally clicking into place, Kobashi's stare or some other factor did not matter; the only thing that did matter was Hisao's agreement to what Kobashi had said.

With the matter resolved in Kobashi's mind, the jounin finally eased his grip on the kunai and allowed it to fall to the ground, the metal clang seemingly unnaturally loud when compared to the silence that had filled the air before Hisao's affirmation. With the blade no longer being held in the wound by Kobashi's hand the blood flowed anew with the crimson drops making a steady dripping noise on the paving stones below their feet. The hand was held out for Hisao to attend to, although Kobashi voice no acknowledgement of the demand for treatment. It seemed though that Kobashi had no intention of resisting such an action.

While Kobashi waited for his hand to be bandaged his eyes wandered over towards the wall of their home, where the now mostly ruined bag of groceries laid on the ground the primary casualty of this impromptu lesson. A tiny frown formed on Kobashi's face as he realized he would be forced to go to the market again to purchase replacements. It was an annoyance to be sure, but a small price to pay if it had provided some insights to Hisao. Still, he could imagine the boy's irritation would be rekindled once Kobashi relayed his intention to go to the market again. This statement could wait until after the bandaging was finished.

" Just surviving in life isn’t the same as living "

Having retrieved some bandages from his jacket and not feeling any resistance from Kobashi, Hisao quickly got started tending to the cut. While he hadn’t intended, or ever thought it even possible for him to physically be able to do so, seeing his brother wounded by his own hand, his blade, wrecked him with guilt. It was likely not what Kobashi had intended for Hisao to feel, judging by what he’d said - what he wanted Hisao to be ready to do.

No. What Hisao understood in this moment was what Kobashi was willing to sacrifice and for what, or rather. Who. Him.

He couldn’t believe anyone would do something like that, especially someone so strong, so good, like Kobashi. How could his life ever compare to his? He’d done nothing but hide and cower. Hisao was pathetic, Kobashi was strong. Reliable. Confident. Liked and respected by so many.
While Hisao disliked one day potentially having to use his comrades as a shield, it couldn’t compare to the mere thought of using Kobashi as a shield or worse, actually leaving him behind and running away..
So caught up in his thoughts, that he almost missed his brother’s frown towards the abandoned groceries. He tightened the last bandage a little more than necessary, a sort of punishment for Kobashi to have been wounded in the first place maybe, before clearing his throat and speaking up.

"I-.. While I apologise for the mess I made, I will not apologise for the attempt..”

Kobashi gave only the faintest twitch at the corners of his lips when the bandage was tightened. It might have been too much force in Hisao's mind, but Kobashi just assumed it was a necessity and so said nothing of the act. Once the bandage was on the only further acknowledgement of the cloth he gave was just the act of opening and closing his hand a few times to test the impact it would have on his hand's movement.

"There's nothing to apologize for. You made use of the environment as best you could. This is something you should be doing... I'll need to go back to the market now though."

Kobashi imagined that Hisao was likely not to be pleased by this. Kobashi hesitated for a few moments before finally moving towards the ruined bag to pick through and see what if anything was unharmed and what would need replaced. Setting just a handful of items not ruined on a window sill he placed the destroyed remnants back into the tattered bag and took it to a small compost pile in the corner of the courtyard. He was preparing himself to leave afterwards, but hesitated for a moment. He could leave Hisao here to train on his own, but the boy had done well enough even with his limited training. Perhaps a modest reward was in order.

"Accompany me Hisao."

They were simple words and stated more like a demand than an offer, but it truly was the later. Kobashi was not at all the best at expressing his emotions, but this was a genuine attempt to show some amount of pride and acknowledgement to the young man.

Hisao gave a nod to show he had heard him but didn’t trust his voice to vocally respond and so he stayed quiet, trying to comprehend what he had just heard.

Was that.. Praise? From Kobashi? What was going on??

He snapped back into reality as Kobashi picked up the bag and started sorting through it. He followed his brother up to the house like a lost lamb, watching him move about, his face more open and unguarded than this usual, practised scowl. He stayed on the engawa as Kobashi moved away to dispose of the destroyed groceries and as his eyes followed the older Sourei, Hisaos’ eyes caught a glint of something in the grass. He focused on it and realised it was the kunai, blade still covered in blood and barely visible above the patch of grass it’d landed in. He sucked in a breath and felt frozen. He looked up as he heard Kobashi come back and looked at him as he ordered him to follow him. Hisao had been so caught up in his thoughts he didn’t know why or where they were going but even so, he obediently, and gladly even, followed Kobashi’s command with a nod of affirmation. He would have stayed near, unless otherwise instructed staying just a step behind him and on his left, and not vocally question anything even as they left the estate.
