It was just past midday and a few clouds were lazily moving across the sky. There was a slight breeze, but it had been an otherwise quiet and so far, uneventful day for Hisao.

Putting on his outdoor shoes, Hisao had left the main house, shuffling around rather loudly in the otherwise eerie quiet. He would usually have tried to stay quiet and normalise not making unnecessary sounds, but he saw no reason to when he was, once again, alone. Kobashi would likely not be home for a few more days, neither would their sister and Hisao didn’t expect anyone else to come around either. He knew he should be more cautious, that Kobashi would probably reprimand him for slacking off like this, but being quiet day in and out, the simple noise of shifting fabrics or his own footsteps made everything seem a little less abandoned and spooky.

He had taken a late shift at the hospital last night and so he had today all to himself and whatever mindless tasks he could think of to waste some time before his next shift tomorrow morning. He had made a shopping list, but truthfully he did not really need anything, the act of shopping functioning more as a distraction than a necessity. He had washed his clothes and sorted his latest study notes. Truthfully he was bored beyond imagination.

He looked back at the main house and thought for a moment. The building itself was very traditional in style and he knew from more than one (or ten) previous attempts where to step and land, as he crawled up and planned to use the side of the building and roof to launch himself to the walls surrounding the private estate grounds. He berated himself quietly for not learning how to walk on vertical surfaces yet - a skill he had seen others perform but not personally thought of as important enough to prioritise.

Hisao landed on the right side of the main house roof and looked up at where he planned to land on the high wall. The exact spot was already slightly scuffed from his previous journeys up there. From there he would have been able to look out at the buildings below. He would sometimes sit there for hours, just looking out. This was a quieter area in town and so it was usually pretty difficult to people-watch from there, but the view was nothing to scoff at as you would be able to see quite far out. As he was debating the best way to go from this part of the roof he heard voices - unfamiliar ones at that. Hisao crouched down and leaned slightly over the edge, just enough to see the gate entrance to the front of the residence.

[Miyamoto Ikana]

Frankly, despite having a member of her team who was a Sourei, she never imagined herself coming to their actual clan compound. Namely because from what she saw, the people seemed to be narcissistic, self absorbed, selfish, and rather antagonistic when it came to other people of Kirigakure. Or perhaps that was more of an Enyo thing. Regardless, she generally associated most Sourei to be black of blood and black of heart. Granted, Kobashi didn't really fit within that stereotype. The fact she was invited to their home was a bit bewildering. Yet, she'd come all the same.

She didn't come dressed in any nice Kimono, nor any sophisticated or well adorned hakama. She instead came as she usually did, dressed in a slightly baggy blue shirt with tight cargo pants. A somewhat frayed and tattered cloak adorning her person. Some might consider Ikana's style of dress, garish, as it hid away most of her bodily features and left her looking somewhat plain and ugly. However, she could care less about such things. She didn't find herself particularly pretty, or cute, or deserving of much attention in the first place. Upon arriving to the somewhat archaic place, she looked left, and then right as she stopped before the house. Hisao in fact might recognize her.

For several years, Ikana worked in the hospital. Primarily, she worked in the morgue, but also transported medical supplies and tools to the doctors and surgeons. She was capable of using sealing techniques, and as a result was someone useful to have when it came to the topic of sealing corpses in scrolls either for data and or disposal at a later time period. Whichever would come first. The small girl walked, hands in her pockets as she made her advance towards this home. Looking somewhat glum or rather perhaps emotionally absent, one might imagine what the day had in store.

The morning sun's gentle rays streamed through the window, rousing An from slumber a few moments before her alarm clock was set to ring. She could already sense the bustling activity outside her room, a predictable occurrence considering the cafe/restaurant they managed always opened early. By now, the preparations for the day would be well underway.

With a languid stretch, An extended her limbs beyond the cozy futon and took a moment to collect her thoughts. Gradually, she rose from her bed, meticulously rolling up the futon and stowing it away. These morning rituals were the initial steps in her carefully choreographed routine.

As she savored her breakfast, her mind embarked on a journey of possibilities for the rare day of freedom that lay ahead. Yesterday evening, fatigue had left her incapable of crafting any detailed plans, so now her thoughts darted around, attempting to cobble together the perfect schedule for the day.

The resounding theme that emerged amidst the mental whirlwind was "training." However, the specifics remained elusive. She contemplated, "Where should I train? And with whom?" These questions lingered in her mind, weaving a tapestry of potential adventures. Perhaps a serene morning yoga session by the tranquil lakeside, with the soft rustle of leaves providing a backdrop to her practice? Or a vigorous hike through the nearby forest, absorbing the invigorating scent of pine needles and the symphony of birdsong?

Ultimately, her footsteps led her to the imposing gates of Sourei Kobashi's house, where she harbored the hope of encountering the owner of the residence. This seasoned trainer had guided her through previous training sessions, and her anticipation was palpable as she approached the unfamiliar location. To her surprise, she discovered she was not alone in her quest. A well-known female figure stood by the entrance too. "Ikana-sensei?" An called out to the other.

An has the ability to grow fungi on just about any surface. Because An’s genetic makeup is more similar to that of fungi than that of humans, she can use techniques based on Fungi anatomy, such as secretions or enzymes from various Fungi. She can easily generate or grow any part of a Fungi's anatomy from her own body by using chakra to further alter her own cells. Finally, because these techniques are made from her own cells or bodily fluids, such as converting her saliva into a specific Fungi secretion, An is immune to their effects.

His hand had drifted to his belt where his kunai hung and it wasn't until Hisao leant over the edge, looked down and saw who the voices belonged to, that he felt he could breathe again.

Oh. It's just that girl.. Hm, perhaps not as unknown as I had first thought

He thought to himself, as the moment of adrenaline left his body. Her name had escaped him until he heard someone else called it out.

He had seen Ikana around the hospital before. He had never introduced himself, his own paranoia when he first started keeping him from making any friends and later once he had felt more comfortable there, it had seemed too awkward to start introducing himself to people he had technically already met.. Besides knowing her name from there, he knew Kobashi had trained her before. He wondered if their sessions were anything alike, somehow not wishing that on this girl. She had seemed sweet and hard-working enough from a distance alone, so much so Hisao briefly wished his brother wasn’t always so.. strict.
Frowning at his own train of thought, his attention moved from Ikana to the new approaching figure. Her long white hair, had made the hairs on his arms stand up and he had quickly thought through every face he could recall of the Sourei clan household

It can’t be - no, I don’t think so.. She looks young. Best not take any chances though..

As a safety precaution, Hisao drew his mask up over his nose and secured it. He had watched the two of them for a moment longer, and eventually decided that they were likely not here to hurt anyone. If so, they were frankly making too big of a scene to get away with it anyways.

He leaned back and followed the edge of the roof to drop down further away, trying to make as little noise as possible. He knew every nook of this area within the tall residence walls, and quietly moved around the side and back out to the front of the house. He could still see them, but it was more difficult to hear them from here.

As he was about to sneak closer he sort of realised how strange it would have looked to them and stopped himself.

A masked figure stalking around outside someone’s home? Yeah better not. No reason to be even more unpleasant looking than you already are, you idiot..

He mentally scolded himself and as quietly as possible cleared his throat, mentally and physically preparing to speak.
He stepped back into the open, looking like he just came from around the bend of the house, where some of the training equipment was still out in the main yard, and walked directly towards them, a forced restraint in the way he walked. He would stop just a few meters away from them, far enough to give him a chance to react should they come closer.

He had his hair braided back into two long brains behind his back and was wearing his usual long off-white, high collared coat, with the Sourei Clan symbol on it, overtop of some basic dark clothes. He walked and stood straight, leaning into being easily the tallest one there. To anyone looking closely, he was thin. His ribs were barely showing through the dark cloth, his physique betrayed by him wearing less layers and belts to cover himself with, as he had frankly not expected to see anyone else today.

"A good day to the both of you. May I know the reason for your loitering at our door?"

Hisao greeted, perhaps a bit more rudely than he originally intended but with a hint of curiosity betraying through with a glint in his eyes.

[Miyamoto Ikana]

When one looked a bit closer at Ikana, especially her young pupil by the name of An; she'd find that Ikana looked...thinner. With the dark rings around her eyes, it showed either she was tired, or at least was not having restful slumber. "Good morning. An-Chan." She calls out with a wave of her hand. She gives a mock salute with her right hand, but comes to pause when eventually called out to by another figure. A white haired boy with those eerie eyes of his. From the way he looked, she discerned that he must have been related to Kobashi.

"My name is Ikana. The reason why I've come is to potentially train with Sourei Kobashi. He offered me tutelage regarding Kenjutsu." Making her answer curt, easy to understand, and still respectful. Frankly. Ikana didn't really know what to make of this figure before them. "If now's not a good time. Then I can come by later, if you could pass on message that I arrived." Turning towards An, she finds herself reflecting on the day. "Maybe we could get you another lesson today. Free of charge." She finds herself closing her eyes in a smile, a slight tilt of her head in her good nature. 

Though she was tired. Very tired.

An blinked in surprise as the white-haired boy emerged from the shadows, his mask adding an air of mystery to his presence. The unexpected encounter with him momentarily flustered her, but she quickly composed herself. Her expression shifted from surprise to a friendly smile as she greeted him.

"Good morning," she said, her tone warm and polite. "I am not loitering around; I was hoping to meet Kobashi-san and maybe ask him to help me train." An introduced herself, trying to appear less suspicious. "I'm Gurē An."

She shifted her attention back to Ikana, who appeared to be very tired for whatever reason. Nevertheless, An was not one to pry so she did the next best thing she could, she smiled at the offer of a free lesson. "I like that idea, Ikana-sensei," An replied with enthusiasm, her excitement bubbling beneath her composed exterior.

The Sourei clan was known to have white-colored hair, as such while looking at Hisao, An had come to a conclusion. "Could you be related to Kobashi-san, by any chance do you also practice bukijutsu?" An inquired, her interest in martial arts evident in her voice. Her eagerness to learn from others had always been a driving force, and the thought of training with a fellow practitioner intrigued her. It was even more appealing with Ikana present; perhaps they could all have a training session with Kobashi.

They sought Kobashi out? Kobashi?? Did they not have any nicer teachers out there??

Hisao barely concealed his surprise at that, mostly because of the mask covering his face. He supposed then that would make sense as to why two so young as them would be here. Usually only adults came to visit and even that was a rarity.

He shifted his stance and gave a slight bow towards the both of them as he spoke up, in a tone that betrayed how practised and perhaps often he would repeat this with complete neutrality.

"Pleasure to make your acquaintance, I am Sourei Hisao, Kobashi’s younger brother. I am sorry to inform you both that the Master of the House is away right now. I cannot inform you on when he will return.”

He raised his head back up and looked at An. He didn’t know much about her or her family relations. Not that that was really a surprise, but not knowing her somehow calmed his beating heart. She looked young but capable - however he figured only time would tell if he would understand why Kobashi would train her. Either of them, really.

He quirked a brow and returned the question without really answering hers, his tone having shifted slightly you could almost call it curiosity.

"Did Kobashi Ani-Ue teach you bukijutsu, Miss Guré?”

Hearing her answer he would then have looked them both over. Ikana seemed tired and he briefly let himself examine her for any obvious signs of fatigue or sickness.

What now.. I’m not really allowed to invite people inside.. But.. they’re already inside the gate - and it’s not like I invited them here.. But he never specifically said I couldn’t let his own students roam around the training grounds or garden.. With supervision of course.

Hisao seemed to have made up his mind about something and with a steady hand, he’d remove his mask and flash them an overly practised, polite smile.

"I am sorry you had to travel all the way here in vain. To rectify that, while it may be a bit unorthodox in any other case, the two of you are more than welcome to use our training grounds today, if you wish. Although, if you are tired, perhaps I could simply show you around our garden and then perhaps you might regale me with tales from these.. training sessions you've both had with Kobashi Ani-Ue?”

While at first he says this with the name forced neutrality as his greeting, it later becomes more clear that he might truly want them to stay. Now, whether it was out of some sort of obligation of politeness or excitement over these new people wasn’t exactly clear, but either way he seemed to truly mean it - they were welcome to stay should they wish to do so.

Hisao spoke so formally; it was borderline painful. In Ikana's mind, it looked as if he was behaving like a noble that was trying very carefully to choose words; as if they were some great nobles that would smite him or think down on him if one word was spoken out of turn. It didn't frustrate Ikana to be frank. She'd been around these types of people before. Some were less obnoxious, and some of them more so. It could be worse though. He could be someone like Enyo.

"Your brother might be stern; and a bit cold on the surface, but he's not a bad man." That was her immediate observation. "He has a strong work ethic." Ikana calls forth. She sighed softly as she knew that Kobashi wouldn't be here today. But at the very least, she could bow her head and show courtesy. Though; she didn't really know how to tell him. How to regale this young brother on the tales of her training. Mainly because her training with the swordsman of the mist was very limited. More superficial as he corrected her stance and posture. He sought to correct her small mistakes and lend her into the finer details.

"Why not a mix of both? We could converse and train in the same breadth. I came here today to keep my skills sharp. And I have a young student of my own who'd undoubtedly like to do the same." She suggested neutrally.

"Ah, yes. Some time ago, I had an upcoming examination scheduled at the Academy," An explained with a touch of nostalgia in her voice, reflecting on the past. "That's when another sensei asked Kobashi-san to assist me with some additional practice. He helped me a lot by pointing out all the small nuances I had missed and giving me a lot of good tips and tricks. Of course, I passed the exam with no problems afterward." Her words flowed smoothly, laced with genuine admiration for Kobashi's skills and a hint of gratitude. As she spoke, she couldn't help but notice that Hisao's speech, though polite, felt somewhat rehearsed, almost as if it were a script he had memorized. However, she dismissed this as simply a peculiar aspect of his conversational style.

Shifting her attention towards Ikana, who had responded to Hisao's proposal to explore the garden and training grounds, An nodded in enthusiastic agreement. "That sounds like a wonderful idea, let's see how it goes," she chimed in, her smile bright and inviting. She turned her gaze to Hisao, her anticipation evident, ready to follow him as he took the lead in guiding them through the garden and training grounds. Her interest was piqued, and she was very curious to see what awaited them.

Hisao would have responded to An with a faint smile. If you were perceptive you might catch an underlying thought that went unspoken, but he quickly moved on after that.

"I am glad he could help you”

Hisao led them around the house, first through the left side past a beautifully tended pond, where flowers and bamboo patches were scattered around. It seemed like nature was more freely let go to dominate here, within reason of course. The pond was about 12ft wide and surrounded by a flat stone path. If you looked closely you might be able to see movement in the water. By the edge of the pond lay a few simple sitting mats and a closed book - like someone was sitting there earlier but had left without their things.

Leading them through and further around the house they passed by a few hand decorated wooden boxes with different herbs and flowers. They looked loved but by inexperienced hands - some too close and some not getting all the sun they need.
Just past that, they entered the training grounds. It was a decently sized short cut grass area with a smaller area sectioned off from the grass with a base of bricks, laid in a pattern where it moved inward. There were training dummies and other training implements placed around this area, neither too close to the surrounding wall nor the house itself.

"It may not look like much, but I must confess it is.. Nice. To have your own ground to train within. Feel free to inspect and use what is here as you see fit for your training”

He offered with a pleasant smile. Hisao had then cleared his throat and lowered his hand back down, holding his hands behind his back. Wherever they wanted to go from here, he would lead them - except inside the house itself.

"Apologies if this is a little too forward for me, but I must confess I am curious to speak to others who have trained with Kobashi. How did you come about this?”

He asked them both and then afterwards more specifically An.

"Miss Guré An, you spoke of a different Sensei. Did they not qualify to teach for that specific lesson, or did they seek my brother out for a different reason?”

"Congratulations on passing your examination An." Pleased with this prospect, the young Ikana would walk alongside Hisao and An, taking in the scenery and every detail of their location. The flowers were of note to her, as Ikana did do a little bit of garden tending herself, but that was besides the point. The place looked nice overall. Until eventually, the trio would make their way to what seemed to be a modest looking training yard. Dummies and training tools strewn about. Given the metaphorical freedom to explore as she liked? Ikana did so. Her hand fiddling as she did one handed seals idly in her motions. Some idle practice.

Familiarized motions as she stopped before the area. She found herself looking freely upon the field before focusing her attention upon An. Then Hisao. "He saw me, training Kenjutsu on my own. Beyond the basics, he adjusted my stances and helped me adjust my posture. Simple things. That's about the extent we've trained and met. But he told me his training was always available." She underplayed her skills and value, but felt that was acceptable more or less. Though. That said, considering An was on the verge of graduation, at least as far as she could tell?

"What should we train today?" Crouching downwards onto her haunches, she stretches her legs, and has her arms behind her head in a sort of bunny hop form. Bouncing a few times, she hops, and then raises her arms to the sky to stretch. Limber herself up. "I can cater to your needs."

"Thank you, Ikana-sensei," An smiled at Ikana as she followed Hisao for the house tour.

As they moved through Hisao's house, An continued to be captivated by the sights around her. The left side of the house, with its meticulously cared-for pond and the scattered flowers and bamboo patches, felt like a tranquil sanctuary where nature coexisted with human influence. The pond, with its substantial 12-foot width, drew her attention, and she leaned in closer, hoping to catch a glimpse of any subtle movements beneath the water's surface.

During their tour, An's gaze fell upon the simple sitting mats by the pond, accompanied by a closed book. It seemed as if someone had recently been in deep contemplation there but had departed, leaving their belongings behind. An couldn't help but wonder about the person who had sat in this peaceful spot.

As they passed by the hand-decorated wooden boxes filled with herbs and flowers, An's smile broadened. They bore the marks of tender care, despite the hands that tended to them being somewhat inexperienced. It was a testament to the beauty that could emerge from heartfelt efforts.

Upon entering the training grounds, An's admiration for the place only grew. The well-maintained grass area and the section with the carefully patterned brick base exuded a sense of both serenity and purpose. The training dummies and implements were strategically placed, creating a harmonious fusion of nature and a space for honing martial skills. An felt a unique blend of tranquility and excitement as if she had discovered a hidden treasure.

Turning to Hisao, An couldn't contain her enthusiasm. "Hisao-san, your house is truly remarkable. The pond and the surrounding greenery create an ambiance of serenity, and the training grounds are exceptional. It's clear that you've poured thought and care into every detail of this place."

When asked about her situation with Kobashi-san, An replied, "I'm not entirely sure, Hisao-san. I was simply practicing on my own when Kobashi-san approached me and mentioned that my regular sensei had asked him to assist me. It's primarily a matter between the two adults, and I was just following their decision."

"Why don't we have a three-way spar?" Suggesting a three-way spar, An's voice carried a hint of uncertainty. She knew Ikana's abilities well but was less certain about what Hisao could bring to the table, despite his familial connection to a skilled older brother.

Because An’s genetic makeup is more similar to that of fungi than that of humans, she can use techniques based on Fungi anatomy, such as secretions or enzymes from various Fungi. She can easily generate or grow any part of a Fungi's anatomy from her own body by using chakra to further alter her own cells. Finally, because these techniques are made from her own cells or bodily fluids, such as converting her saliva into a specific Fungi secretion, An is immune to their effects.

"Thank you Miss Guré An. It is important to keep your surroundings peaceful and proper. Living in chaos will only create more within yourself.. Or so I was taught. I must admit I just like the tranquillity of it all, even if my skills are fairly novice still..”

Hisao responded looking about as they did, attempting to clear the feeling of paranoia that plagued him still, triggered deep within him simply by having people here without his brother’s direct knowledge and approval. He had let his mind wonder and having had people to talk to he had absentmindedly continued talking.

"I was hoping more of my herbs would have grown stronger roots by now, but I may need to replant them somewhere else.. I had to evict certain plants before they overtook the rest, it may be a - Oh, but you’re not here to listen to my pondering about plans, apologies”

He stopped and awkwardly fidgeted with the bottom of his mask, wanting to cover his face back up to hide the forced smile he knew likely did not help him seem less awkward than he felt.


As he had listened to them both talk about their experiences training with Kobashi, Hisao’s eyebrows had drawn together in confusion.

"So. In both of your cases, Sourei Kobashi, my brother, actively guided your training without-”

Hisao started, disbelief or surprise evident in his voice before he seemed to catch himself and stopped talking.

"Apologies. It is not that I do not believe you both.. I just. It’s very interesting.. Even it it was just ‘corrections’ as you said, I hope they will help you both”

He would clear his throat and take a step back at the suggestion of sparring with him.

"While I sincerely appreciate you wanting to involve me in this, I fear that might go against-. Um. Well, while you two may train here and with each other, I would have to ask my brother’s permission before entering a sparring match with anyone. I would rather not incur his anger, neither on my or your behalf.. Apologies again.”

While Hisao seemed uncomfortable he also seemed truly apologetic and perhaps a tad embarrassed still. He lowered his gaze for a moment before steeling them back at the both of them.

"Best I can do for you in this regard is comment from the sideline or should either of you get hurt I can treat you. But beyond that, I am but a humble host and watchful eye”

His face had mostly lost all emotion and he seemed to have reset back more to the Hisao you had first met, with stiff shoulders and a polite but neutral tone of voice.

[Miyamoto Ikana]

A three way spar was suggested, and in this frame, Ikana looked on with a raised brow when he mentioned that he couldn't spar. Couldn't actively participate without his brother's consent. The boy looked as old as she was, and yet he acted as if he was a dog, whelped and whipped into submission. Though considering Kobashi's intimidating nature, perhaps it could be so. She gazed upon him then. Trained in the Shinobi arts so it would seem, and yet hidden away like he was some sort of danger. Or perhaps a treasure that was too precious to release. It was a curious thought to Ikana for the whole of five seconds. After that? No longer.

"Very well then." Taking a step back, she'd move step after step across the training yard, until she stood before the dummies. "I'd imagine at this point, you must be getting close to graduating the academy. In record time." So she had hoped and imagined. "Feel free to show me what you've learned." Standing there neutrally, she enters a loose martial arts stance. One hand held level along her waist, the other level with her chest as she clenches her hands into fists. She was eager to see how An's development had been, even more so when she'd finally rise to the rank of Genin. Whilst Hisao served as a witness. Sit and stew on his observations. 

"I'll go easy on you."

An listened carefully to Hisao's explanation, his reluctance to spar, and his concern about his brother's approval. She could sense the weight of responsibility and expectations that rested upon him, and it made her appreciate the complexity of their situation.

"It's completely understandable, Hisao-san," An replied with a gentle smile, trying to put him at ease. "Family matters can be quite intricate, and I respect your decision to prioritize your brother's wishes. There's no need to apologize. Your willingness to offer your insights and assistance is already greatly appreciated."

Turning her attention to Ikana, An nodded with determination. An had indeed been working diligently on her training. Thought Taijutsu was still not her strong point. But it was always good to try and improve a skill that she was weak at. "Thank you for understanding, but we have a medic on site, so i think it is okay if you don't go easy on me, Ikana-sensei. And thank you for the opportunity to demonstrate what I've learned. It would be an honor." She stepped forward, her stance mirroring Ikana's.

Not waiting for long, with a swift and calculated movement, she closed the distance between them and attempted a series of taijutsu strikes, combining agility and precision. Her first move was a quick feint, aiming a low kick at Ikana's legs to test her balance and reaction. She followed up with a rapid jab aimed at Ikana's midsection, aiming to keep her opponent on the defensive. An's movements were fluid, showcasing her training in taijutsu techniques.
