[attr="class","skullbody"]Ichi had been charged with a list of tasks, and to say he was stressed was almost an understatement. However, this was how he wanted to live his life. This was the way that he wanted to spend his time, and that ooutweighed any stress that the herculean tasks could ever impress upon the boy. After all, Nohara no Kuni was what mattered - he was just one of its many parts.

Wearing only his normal farming clothes the giant's somewhat tanned body was exposed to the sun as he smoked over his shovel. Down below was the digsite that would launch the project the Daimyo had greenlighted from his suggestions for country defense tasks. It was already an odd position for a nineteen year old boy, but Ichi was up to this. The Ashigarou assisting with the work already on it as he waited for his lieutenant on this mission to appear.

Digging out the beginning of a new era from the nothing that they had had before. Ichi was eager to start, but he needed allies who knew the task at hand, and he further needed them to know what was at stake. Atagi filled that bill quite well and so Ichi had every thought to tell him more of what was going on. More then what the mission really mentioned.

Ichi's SA's and Techniques in Use:[break][break]

『Harvest Moon's Child』
Ichi was born to the Nakahara clan on the night of a Harvest Moon. Born with quite the green thumb he was assumed to be an inheritor of the clan's natural talents with plants. The roots ran deeper, however, as Ichi was born with a Kekkai Genkai, being a rare natural occurance of Wood Release outside of the Senju. In learning of this he has trained his kekkai to the best of his abilities. He is no master, seeing as he has no reference of Mokuton, but he has found a way to bring out techniques along side his own talents in a cohesive manner.

Ichi was born with Mokuton, but he was not graced with the same level of chakra as the Senju would be in his situation. Being roughly average for an individual, Ichi instead focused on the skills his birth clan preferred. Practicing his medical skills, he has gained a higher quality of Chakra Control. Ichi is much less likely to leak chakra than the average shinobi because of this.

『The Festival's Atmosphere』
Having practiced his skills with extending his senses outwards with the use of mokuton chakra, Ichi is particularly adept at sensing life in an area. Capable of finding life through the very nature around people. Within [20 meters] Ichi is capable of passively sensing out plant and animal life in a general sense. Able to differentiate it between plant and animal, but no further. Unlike chakra sensory Ichi can not more or less readily sense others based on their chakra, but instead purely senses the 'vitality' in things, though even those with seemingly boundless vitality will read the same as the elderly or a newborn to him. Also unlike usually sensory to actively search out individuals Ichi requires Mokuton, or the use of his pipe (though using it makes his position much easier to locate), as a catalyst to extend his senses, only going out as far as the technique's range, or twice his passive range in case of the pipe. It is also notable that the deceased, and those that feign death in some fashion, as through a poison or a jutsu, are completely invisible to Ichi. Notably the furthest he can extend his senses is [100 meters].

[Uzumaki Atagi]

Yearn for timelessness

Atagi Uzumaki’s first through third instincts, upon being assigned the task of digging a tunnel, of all things, were those of excitement and exuberance. Even a job like this was important, after all– if every mission was ultimately in service of the people, and the country itself, then what could be more emblematic of that than simple construction? After the initial happiness (that never truly seemed to fade from the optimistic mind of the maroon-haired shinobi) though, there were other questions. While the ninja force of countries often did what could be described as ‘grunt work’, it seemed slightly odd to him that this one in particular seemed to be an all-military project. Not to say that he, nor Ichi, nor the Ashigaru were incapable of breaking the earth, but…it just seemed strange to not employ people who did this sort of thing all the time.

Then again, between his raw physicality and Ichi’s mind, perhaps they could make up for the difference, he thinks to himself.

Jogging on up to the area that looked down at the digsite proper, cordoned off by obviously temporary rope fencing and stakes in the ground for markers, Atagi has the appearance of someone who’s about to go out for a workout, instead of the usual mission attire, layers and padding and all. Instead, he looks like naught but a simple farmer, a plain brown haori (with no undershirt), simple tan pants shorts…and they weren’t quite shoes, but he’d switched out sandals for tabi that had a little extra solidity to the toe area, perhaps made for things like, say, construction. Packs of weights, recent fixtures that seemed about permanent, a testament to the Uzumaki's dedication to the carving out of a greater physical form-- they clashed a little with the rest of his outfit, colour-wise, and he got the sense that doing a full day's manual labour in them would be exhausting...but just as they'd build a better Nohara no Kuni, he too would seek to build a better him, one day at a time. Atagi’s even brought his own shovel, not that it was likely necessary, slung over one shoulder like some sort of weapon.

With his free hand, he snaps off a lively little salute toward the jolly green giant, sidling on up alongside him. "Ichi-san!” he chirps. ”Long days and pleasant nights, t’you. I see the crew’s already hard at work– many hands, and all that. What's good, bad, or other?” An exchanged greeting, a simple pleasantry or two. It seemed from the other man’s expression alone that he had a lot on the mind and even more to spill from it, so Atagi resists the urge to continue chattering away, giving a look with aureate irises that said he was open and listening.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Glee took over the Nakahara's face as the formed a seal and snuffed the head of his pipe so that he could put it away. With his co-conspirator here to help cover the work Ichi could only feel as jovial as the Uzumaki made himself sound. The young man had done more than recover, and even as Ichi physically imposed over him in terms of height, there was no contest in between who had the better body between a scholarly farmer and an absolute over-achiever in terms of physical gains. Giving a respectful nod Ichi would wrap a hand on the handle of his shovel and lift to to turn and sit on his shoulder like it was natural, and it was for a raised farmboy shinobi.

"Good to see you as well Atagi-San. I see that you really came to work today," Ichi would state mentioning towards the obvious extra weight that the young man was carrying on his body to help train it. Ichi was not going to comment on why he thought that was the case for Atagi, but it also didn't matter. He needed to debrief the young man, especially because Ichi wanted him to help more with this particular mission as well, the full project could use Atagi's skills, "I'm sure you know we are digging, but it wasn't in the initial debrief to why. I think I owe you an explanation of the basics if I want you employ you for the full project. The long and short Atagi, we are building a village. A village deep underground that is out of the normal purview of the normal citizens. Something we can use to deploy ourselves far easier to the many places around Nohara. For that to work though, we have a lot of digging to do, so I hope you aren't opposed to the hard work."

Ichi's words were calm, jovial, and casual despite the weightiness of what he was actually suggesting here. It was the type of thing that would have massive effects towards the things the village could do, and by extent the military as a whole. Perhaps Atagi didn't get the full picture, but Ichi certainly did and he would continue to work towards the completion of these new military projects.

Ichi is incredibly smart for someone his age, but he lacks the qualifications to be a scholar. This is because his intelligence is not found in understanding of principles and anything so magnificiently deep. It instead lies in his observational talents and ability to react to everything that is going on around him with an absolute calm. Being able to plan and act with just minute details to go off of, Ichi is best described as a schemer and a diplomat rather than a genius. This makes him perfect for roles that are heavy in Tactical and Diplomatic Decision Making, as he grasps larger images and can put together clues better than others. Effectively allowing him to take in the wider picture of everything going on and piece together practical responses in mere moments with little to no hesitation or error.

Eyes of gold trace the path of Ichi’s own gaze, as he flicks to the weights, then comments on them, that grin on his face briefly taking up the character of bemusement. He was here to ‘really work’? Of course, he might’ve remarked, Atagi Uzumaki simply wouldn’t be satisfied unless he worked ten times as hard as everyone else and was the last to leave, to boot. At the notion of the briefing, there’s an extra little twinkle in the eye, and the maroon-topped man shuffles a step closer to Ichi, the two of them looking like farmers with their simple outfits and slung shovels alike. One ought to have drawn a sketch of them like that, he mused, with a big ol’ "building the better Nohara no Kuni of tomorrow: today!” or something similarly inspiring.

Then, the knowledge gets dropped on him. Not a simple tunnel, not some mining operation or well or a place to store crops for the winter: but instead a whole village. It prompts Atagi to whistle, throwing Ichi a sly look and a cocked eyebrow. The hand that wasn’t holding the shovel is raised up to his chin, palm over his lips as if he was rubbing at his cheeks with thumb and forefingers…but there was no itch, there, merely a desire to scratch at the worry someone might be reading their lips from afar. A shinobi could never be too careful.

”That’s...sort of a massive undertaking, yeah? To say the least.” It doesn’t sound like he’s at all discouraged– in fact, if anything, he sounded more excited. ”Well. You picked the right man for the job, yeah? Especially if it’s to be of service to the good people of this country in a time of great need. I’ll lend you my full support.” The full picture? No, it was unlikely that he’d even begin to be able to fully understand and rationalize all the implications that the project had…but a place to tuck away civilians in times of war and a way for the military, shinobi included, to get around in a quicker, stealthier, better way? That’d be useful all on its own.

A gesture’s given to the site with the shovel cordoned off as it was. ”I don’t suppose we’ve got a blueprint, diagram, or proposition? Just getting started, I get the sense it won’t be anything more complex than the main tunnel going down that we’d start the rest of the work from.” The hand is lowered from his mouth, finally, as he recalls they’re no longer talking about anything that’s to explicitly be under wraps.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Atagi's habits showed more attention to detail then paranoia to Ichi and that was perfectly fine to the soon to be lord himself. Pulling out an enclosed paper he would hold it out to Atagi, a deep look at the young man as he presumably opened the paper and say just what they were doing. It was not like they were simply opening a tunnel into a fully man-made location. It was more of a tunnel system being dug right though rock and stone and into a natural chasm below their land that Nohara had been aware of for a while. The goal was to clear it all out safely and get it a safe state so that they could construct and reinforce the entirety of the inside using every trick in the book for the matter at hand. It was an insane sort of project, but Atagi would also know the massive lake central to Nohara was also man-made and not a naturally occurring piece of the land's nature.

"I'm glad you feel as such Atagi-San, I am of much the same mind as is our Daimyo since he green-lighted this project. This is more or less us finding a location out of the way for us to find an initial way in and a certain court member gave us this location as one of the most shallow non-cave entrances into the tunnels below. This is history in the making Atagi-San, and I will be damned if it does not leave both of us better and Nohara better then before we started this project," Ichi would comment with a smile that quickly turned to a grin. Shifting his shovel to stamp it in front of Atagi, Ichi would call out below, "My fellow man, I would ask you all go and take a break for the moment! We have a lot of digging to do and my co-expedition leader and I will be taking over the digging at least for an amount of time. Please take your rest!"

Ichi's call was met with a resounding number of whoops and cheers as they moved away from the digsite and Ichi lumbered off the side of the ledge to the beginning quarry site and landed near where they were slowly declining the earth down and into the ground towards their cavern entrance. Breathing once inward deeply Ichi began to string handseals together one after another before placing a hand to the ground with a deep exhale as chakra poured like water onto a garden dwelling in the earth during spring showers. A small rumbling as massive tendrils as thick as some trees rose from the earth and began to bend and sway somewhat freely as the expansion continued for quite some ways. Arches and tunnels, make-shift shade forming over and around the workers as they rested most somewhat unnerved or fascinated by the sudden forest of roots. Ichi keeping still to the earth began to command the one's before him to reach into and break apart the dirt near the digging point, wanting to push them deeper down into the earth to expedite the job to a degree. If Atagi were to join a space would be immediately cleared for him, but for now Ichi was doing something rather ridiculous - this project seemed to require ridiculous.

The Uzumaki unfurls the paper and looks at it with awed eyes, but overall? It seems to excite him. The two of them got along right as rain and seemed to read each other’s hearts effortlessly– in Atagi’s case because he was so straightforward, and in Ichi’s case because he was so obviously dedicated to the love of the country and its people; a trait they absolutely shared.The maroon-topped shinobi had indeed known about the cavern, but had never dreamed they’d use it for something like this. In fact, he had always been under the impression that it was haunted, or had beasts in it beyond imagination, or something similar; what else would explain the lack of developing it into anything already?

Well, aside from the tumultuous economic and political precipice Nohara no Kuni always teetered on, anyway.

As Ichi shouts for the men to take a break and clear out, most of them seem relieved, glad to have a respite. Many of them grab some water. Nearly all of them cheer on. Atagi stands behind Ichi a few paces, head tilted to one side quizzically, but smiling nonetheless, trusting in his senior (in rank, anyway) to do something amazing, as he expected. To add a little fuel to the fire, Atagi shouts, too. ”Aye, leave the heavy lifting to me and Ichi-san, yeah? That’s what shinobi are for! There’s a lot of work ahead, so don’t forget to pace yourselves, and lean on the two of us as much as you can, bahaha!” A good natured laugh to cap off an inspiring word, like manual labour was supposed to be fun. Well, Atagi was just the sort of optimist to find a way to spin it like that, so it was fitting.

When the ground begins to move, those massive roots sprouting skyward, bending like they were sentient (and indeed, maybe they were) even Atagi is given pause, mouth a little ‘o’ and brows raised at the sight. ”Holy hat…I was expecting something amazing, but this is downright awe-inspiring, yeah?” Still, there’s no time to waste; there never is, in his mind.

The shovel’s picked up, and Atagi’s darting this way and that, taking up the task of helping to break up particularly ornery patches of dirt for the wood to worm into, creating little ‘access points’ where they seemed pertinent. He also takes upon himself the responsibility of hefting out any rocks or other debris that create an obstacle, already working up a sweat, but always insisting that he take on the most taxing job at the time, and never without a beaming smile.

It was not a technique he could actually handle for very long, but it would help to finish the job a bit ahead of schedule if he could do it properly. Stilled and stuck to the place he started his jutsu, Ichi would focus on the location of others as the roots grew out and spread still to their full extension. It was hard to press the boundary of what one's jutsu could actually do, and this was one of those cases especially. He couldn't let Atagi be the only one pressing his limits in the labor after all. Ichi's own abilities being birthed singularly in ninjutsu made the physical labor hard, but what he lacked in physicality he more then made up in his training of his barriers. As his roots burrowed and chipped he pushed to extend the range of his barrier, new roots growing further into the ground as it whittled away in front of the two shinobi's combined force.

Chuckling as they two worked Ichi would call, "Its moments like these I wish my reserves were larger then they were, mind if I borrowed from you Atagi-San? You usually seem to have more then enough in the gas tank for these sorts of things." Ichi would shout with his chuckling turning into full on laughter, his stance to the ground firm as the earth pulled apart by the roots around them, his push to dig as deep as possible while he had chakra showing a few fruits for his labor already. No, their labor.

『Harvest Moon's Child』
Ichi was born to the Nakahara clan on the night of a Harvest Moon. Born with quite the green thumb he was assumed to be an inheritor of the clan's natural talents with plants. The roots ran deeper, however, as Ichi was born with a Kekkai Genkai, being a rare natural occurance of Wood Release outside of the Senju. In learning of this he has trained his kekkai to the best of his abilities. He is no master, seeing as he has no reference of Mokuton, but he has found a way to bring out techniques along side his own talents in a cohesive manner.

Ichi was born with Mokuton, but he was not graced with the same level of chakra as the Senju would be in his situation. Being roughly average for an individual, Ichi instead focused on the skills his birth clan preferred. Practicing his medical skills, he has gained a higher quality of Chakra Control. Ichi is much less likely to leak chakra than the average shinobi because of this.

『The Festival's Atmosphere』
Having practiced his skills with extending his senses outwards with the use of mokuton chakra, Ichi is particularly adept at sensing life in an area. Capable of finding life through the very nature around people. Within [20 meters] Ichi is capable of passively sensing out plant and animal life in a general sense. Able to differentiate it between plant and animal, but no further. Unlike chakra sensory Ichi can not more or less readily sense others based on their chakra, but instead purely senses the 'vitality' in things, though even those with seemingly boundless vitality will read the same as the elderly or a newborn to him. Also unlike usually sensory to actively search out individuals Ichi requires Mokuton, or the use of his pipe (though using it makes his position much easier to locate), as a catalyst to extend his senses, only going out as far as the technique's range, or twice his passive range in case of the pipe. It is also notable that the deceased, and those that feign death in some fashion, as through a poison or a jutsu, are completely invisible to Ichi. Notably the furthest he can extend his senses is [100 meters].[break][break]

Ichi is incredibly smart for someone his age, but he lacks the qualifications to be a scholar. This is because his intelligence is not found in understanding of principles and anything so magnificiently deep. It instead lies in his observational talents and ability to react to everything that is going on around him with an absolute calm. Being able to plan and act with just minute details to go off of, Ichi is best described as a schemer and a diplomat rather than a genius. This makes him perfect for roles that are heavy in Tactical and Diplomatic Decision Making, as he grasps larger images and can put together clues better than others. Effectively allowing him to take in the wider picture of everything going on and piece together practical responses in mere moments with little to no hesitation or error.

[Uzumaki Atagi]

Yearn for timelessness

It doesn’t take long before that telltale sheen of sweat takes to Atagi’s brow and every movement is accompanied by what could only be called haggard breathing, the body eager to drink up every ounce of oxygen that it was able to. He’s got plenty of stamina, sure, but he’s hardly a machine. Half of it was sheer gusto, even, a desire to press onward, dig deep(literally), and get it done. Dirt flies, pebbles are produced, and the tunnel begins to take shape. There’s a profound respect present from the Uzumaki in the presence of a man who is so happy to actually get down on the ground floor and get his hands dirty for a good cause, so if he fails to at least match Ichi’s fervor, then it’d have been a personal failing, something that was obviously and utterly unforgivable.

There’s the chunk sound that always follows the pushing of a spade into dirt, Atagi scooping up yet another shovelful and dumping it aside, before using the tip to cross hatch a few ‘hard’ spots where the roots could do the rest. An arm comes up, wiping at some of the sweat, but it’s not as effective as it could be considering that his arm’s also basically covered in the stuff, soaking into his clothing and the pads of his training weights in away that would make it impossible to lie to anyone that saw him about not working hard today. (Maybe he could come up with some cover story about being on the run from some wild, rabid animal.)

Turning over his shoulder, he calls back to Ichi with some mischief touching his voice, even as he’s setting the shovel aside in order to quite literally heft up a rock with his bare hands, hauling it out of the way and setting it onto the ground again with a thunk, and a relieved exhale of breath. ”If I could, I would, believe me! It’s hardly a fair comparison, especially when I’ve got no jutsu so wildly useful or impressive for a task like this, yeah?” No, and it was exactly because of that that the Uzumaki was intent on making up for the difference in their skills with sheer enthusiasm, as he usually did. There’s a mental note made, a reminder to pick up some utility sooner or later; or at least, to enhance himself enough physically that he really could do things as impressive as Ichi’s massive root digging technique with his body alone.

Reaching deeper and deeper into the nearly dried well that was his reserves to push into the ground the roots seemingly swelled all at once. The tips exploding into the burrow of dirt. A blasting grind of stone sounded as the tunneling took place, the earth being broken apart as the roots reached deeper, and deeper, and deeper. A stride being reached as a crescendo with his technique before Ichi felt the coming of exhuastion hitting his body. He had been using likely his most expensive barrier to date to push the envelope of what they were doing here, how far they could go.

For all his muscle, Ichi knew he was no Atagi. His body was frailer, and his means of correcting that very thin and far between - not that he cared to. He was strong enough to perform manual labor with the help of his friends and village when needed. This was no different, "I am about tapped here Atagi-San. The Ashigaru should be able to help you get fairly deep once the roots start to dissapate more!"

Ichi would call out in strain, obviously pushing the limits of what he could do even in this situation. This would be the end of the massive barrier, but he would be more then capable of handling the rest from a managerial position. His roots so deep to the stone and dirt that he wasn't sure how deep he was inside of the earth fully... a hundred meters? More? It seemed like more, but there was no way to truly confirm that here and now.
