"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."

On a sunny day amidst the brisk autumn season of Kusagakure, Sachi found herself assigned to a rather routine yet challenging mission. She'd be working alongside Atagi-senpai, a skilled older genin with a penchant for these sorts of tasks, and Saya-senpai, a good friend of hers who became a guardian of the gates. Despite being far from a combat-oriented Kunoichi, Sachi felt confident in her senpais’ abilities, having heard tales of Saya and Atagi’s numerous past missions, separately but both were very accommodating to the Kisei's lack of experience. This time, their mission was to investigate the road between Hohei-cho and Hirata and offer medical assistance to a passing shipment that had recently attacked.

"Good afternoon, Atagi-Senpaaaaaai!" Sachi's cheerful voice sliced through the crisp air as she hurried to meet her teammate outside the village's post. She sported the Nakahara pipe, which she briefly held in her mouth before using it to wave at him. Though her body felt somewhat stiff due to the pipe's effects, it was clear that her resistance had improved. She extinguished the smoke inside her pipe before running over to the ever-punctual Uzumaki, who always seemed to arrive before her, noticing that the other redhead hadn’t arrived yet. Sachi was generally the first one to arrive when she could, but Atagi somehow always beat her to the punch.

"Quite the coincidence to run into you around these parts," she remarked with a bright, jestful smile, her childlike enthusiasm evident in her body language, a sweet nectar smell clinging onto her body. "As expected, you're here early, as always!"

Sachi then delved into other information she heard but seemed relevant to the mission, her voice animated and filled with energy. "Oh, did you hear about the recent troubles in the business sector? Yasuha-Ojiisan told me that there are individuals targeting shipments again! He’s the traveling good merchant a couple of blocks down from the Kisei Café if you’ve ever stopped by." While it was concerning news, the young Genin looked like she was more excited than worried or fearful as she relayed it to Atagi. "He often gives me news about various going-ons in the business sector.”

Pushing the pipe back into her case, a hand resting under her chin as she recalled months prior. "I have a feeling it might be the same bandit group we're dealing with on this mission. It's quite impressive how they managed to ambush the shipment just a mile outside the Hohei-Cho city gates. The damage was big enough that they needed additional medical assistance, and well, I'm the only trainee medic available at the moment somehow." Once again, they had called upon those who were available to lend a hand.

"I'll be relying on Senpai once more it seems.” She ends her words with a small "tehe” before inquiring, "Have you met Saya-senpai yet? Kojiro-senpai’s cousin?”

Saya was rarely, if ever, late. She took it as a point of pride to always be, at the very least, perennially on time to each and every appointment she had, if only so she could serve as a good example for not only her clan, but Kusagakure as a whole. So when the redhead looked at the clock in her room after waking up from a long night of sword practice with her Uncle and saw that she had a grand total of twenty minutes to get ready and make it to the gate, she did the only logical thing possible; she panicked. Moving with a speed hitherto undreamt of by her mortal body, the Hono Genin flew through the bath, dressing herself and somehow managing to shovel down a full breakfast with five minutes to spare, Hitsuiken held in her left hand as she barreled through the village, a piece of toast hanging from her mouth.

Late, late, late oh gods I’m gonna be laaaaaaaaate! She thought, at last managing to stuff her sword into her obi as she ran, weaving through the crowd at a breakneck pace. She was wearing a simple outfit today, though one she probably wouldn’t have chosen if she hadn’t been in such a hurry; featuring a blend of old and new styles, her kimono was shorter in the front than the back, with wide slits on both sides that showed off her legs (though not all the way, as she did have on leggings), while the top hung loose below her shoulders, giving the whole thing an informal look one might expect at a party.

Eventually, however, Saya made it to the designated rendezvous point just outside the village, breathing heavy, hair a windswept mess, looking for all the world like she was about to head into some salacious soiree… but smiling all the same. "Sorry to keep you waiting! I overslept.”

Virtue is bold, and goodness is never fearful

It was one thing to be punctual as a matter of principle, and Atagi Uzumaki definitely wasn’t short on it– but, frankly put, half the reason that he (nearly) always showed up first to these sorts of things was that stillness eluded him. Tranquilness of mind and spirit cropped up on occasion, but if he was sometimes a pond then he was nearly always a roaring rapid, so ready to move and groove that it felt like he didn’t have a choice. A true materialist, the sort of philosophy that he could never find himself agreeing to, absolutely would’ve remarked that he didn’t…have a choice. Locks of crimson gently move and catch the sunlight, as he does a few stretches, limbering up in the event that they needed to suddenly exert themselves. In fact, the prospect seemed downright likely.

A jovial wave is given Sachi’s way as she trots on over, remarking about the very fact that he’d beaten her to the punch yet again. A toothy, winning smile, not practiced but definitely well-worn, is sported. ”A fortuitous coincidence indeed, isn’t it? I was just looking for a medic in training to accompany me on this task.” A good natured response, leaning into the joke much as he could muster without screaming…yet. Listening carefully to the girl who was never short on information, a look of thought overtakes his features, even if Atagi continues to pace, walking and talking while considering it.

”A mile outside the gates is terribly brazen, but moreso is the idea that…well. They would just be going to a hospital if it was a matter of the people, right? But the fact of the matter is, there must be stuff they held onto or protected that’s worth making a second pass for, if the two…three of us, are being dispatched. Probably to help bring the stuff back, too.” Sometimes he had moments of clarity and intelligence, definitely when it came to stuff he’d experienced before and could intuit.

For his part, he was clad, in the usual mission attire, Uzumaki emblem and sode and all, along with the training weights that he’d recently burdened himself with over the past year or so. Not that it made him move or seem and less sprightly.

Then, there was the telltale pitter-patter of running. The Uzumaki raises up a hand in the universal gesture for ‘don’t mind’, laughing jovially at the display. ”Bahaha! Well-. You know how to make a good first impression, at least.” Gesturing to himself, first, Atagi gets the introductions out of the way. ”Atagi Uzumaki, of the grass– obviously. Future great person, close combat specialist, quick as sin n’ tough as nails. Nice to make your acquaintance, Saya-chan. Thanks for always takin’ care of Koji, in your own way.” A little expression of peace at the mention of one of Atagi’s closest friends is overtaken by a beaming expression, confidence simply dripping off the older genin, in short order.”I’ll be relying on you, I’m sure. Sacchan can introduce herself.” he tries out yet another nickname for Sachi, an ongoing process of determining what he’ll settle on as a term of endearment for her. He also allows the pinkette to offload the same debriefing to Saya, as well as (presumably) their soon-to-be departure. Eager as he was to always get a word in edgewise, getting to know Saya could happen while walking and talking and working– they had a job to do, after all. The sooner the better.

"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."

Sachi couldn't help but giggle at Atagi's response to her greeting, muffling it with her hands before replying, "Indeed, quite brazen. I can imagine they might come back for remaining items or even attack other shipments departing from Hohei-Cho, especially since they were successful today." She then shared additional information she had received about the situation.

"I was notified that the hospital staff in Hohei-Cho had a strangely busy day today," Sachi explained, her expression thoughtful. "It seemed like everyone was experiencing health issues, and as a result, the dispatch to the location was not only slow, but they couldn't attend to everyone. They had to prioritize those with concussions and major wounds." It was clear that the situation raised some concerns and Sachi did find it a weird coincidence that most clinics in Hohei-Cho were busy as the capital wasn’t small at all, at least to her.

Before they could delve further into the topic, they were interrupted by the arrival of another kunoichi with equally bright red hair as Atagi. She was Sachi's good friend and another senpai, Hono Saya.

After Atagi's grandiose introduction, Sachi walked up to the kunoichi with an excited and warm smile, giving her a heartfelt hug. While Sachi didn't typically show such physical affection outside of her family, Saya was an exception, and Sachi felt comfortable enough to drop formalities around her.

"Atagi-senpai and I are early, so you weren't late at all! ~" Sachi reassured her friend as they exchanged greetings.

"Saya-senpai and I have been friends since I moved to Kusagakure."
She explained to Atagi as she broke away from her hug.

With a relaxed expression, Sachi briefly explained their mission to Saya, reiterating what they were tasked with. "I told this to Atagi-senpai already, but we were sent out because there was an ambushed shipment about a mile outside of Hohei-Cho, on the path between Hohei-Cho and Hirata. They want us to investigate it and perhaps retrieve the stolen goods and also administer medical aid to whomever who needs it."

When Sachi came forward to offer her a hug, Saya didn’t hesitate; despite her tiredness, she returned it, wrapping her arms around the Kisei girl in a display of affection that was reflective of how close the two were. She had been one of the first people Sachi had ever met upon moving to Kusagakure, and the pair of them had bonded over a shared love of books and quiet spaces.

"You two being early doesn’t change anything, but that thanks." The Hono said, her lips twitching down in a soft, joking frown as she and Sachi split apart; she wasn’t exactly happy at being the last to arrive, but she wasn’t about to let it ruin her focus for the mission. Especially when Koji’s sorta-cute friend was with them. Taking in several deep breaths, the red-head motioned for her teammates to go, faux-frown shifting to a light smile as she gave both of them the opportunity to take the lead… though if neither took it, she would.

"So. Bandits, right?" She asked once they were moving, one hand resting on Hitsuiken’s hilt, not quite ready to draw but close enough, her ears perking up at Sachi’s explanation of the situation. It was unusual in and of itself for bandits to be attacking a shipment anywhere near Hohei-Cho, but the fact that they had been successful enough that they needed to call in a medic (even a Genin) from Kusa to help tend to the wounded had the gears in her head turning, if only a little.

"Do we have any more info on these guys?" Saya asked, already focusing on what the trio might need to do to deal with the threat. Finding bandits wasn’t exactly a difficult task, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t a dangerous one- one wrong move, particularly for a trio of Genin, and they’d be in big trouble. Numbers still mattered, after all.

Well, he supposed it was for the better that Saya wasn’t simply content with the situation as it was. Something about that obsessive desire to stick to one’s values, to live up to one’s moral code (whatever that meant at the time and place) resonated with him. So, he curbs the part of him that wants to reassure the Hono, again, that her tardiness really is fine, and allows it to just be.

The hug, admittedly, surprised him. Somehow, he hadn’t imagined that the two of them would be friends, though honestly enough your average Kusa-nin seemed to have lists of friends miles long. Himself included. Folk like Okingshi excluded, though that was more by choice than anything else, wasn’t it?

Atagi, naturally enough, takes point, acts as the tip of the spear. He has the most confidence in his defensive capabilities (and is the toughest) so it only makes sense for him to be in the first and most exposed position in their little formation of three. If Saya is tenacious upon it (though he’d insist and re-insist that he ought to be taking charge) then the Uzumaki is fine with letting her at least stand by his side instead of behind him, but he certainly won’t be behind anyone else.

As they get a move on, he’s unabashed about chattering, as is his forte. ”Not exactly, yeah? Nothing specific, at least– but as always, we can extrapolate. For example, I’d expect at least five armed men, maybe more, depending on the size of the shipment and if it had any guards or not. This is the part where a more practical, sensible senpai–” He thinks of a particular collapsed star with sleepy eyes and silvery locks. "--would suggest to you that you don’t underestimate even simple bandits. After all, a cornered rat can kill a cat. However.” He gives a toothy grin over his shoulder, brimming with enough confidence to move mountains or take flight…metaphorically. ”We’re not cats, we’re mountain lions. Don’t show the civvies, especially the injured ones, an ounce of hesitation or apprehension. We’re here, so they’ve got nothing to worry about– simple as.” Saya and Sachi were smart girls, so they probably already knew that much, but he never missed out on an opportunity for a philosophical assertion, an aphorism, or heroics.

As such, when they finally arrive at the scene of the crime, he’s still all smiles, despite the broken or toppled carts, despite the groaning wounded laying in makeshift beds, or propped up against whatever surface they can. It’s clear that some of the shipment remains, either protected or too much to carry for the initial raiding party.

A grandiose wave is given, and he holds palaver with the first person who approaches him, a distraught looking woman in clothing that was above plain but below fancy– definitely merchant-class if there ever was one. He learns that her name is ‘Ashikaga Yumiko’. ”Uzumaki Atagi, shinobi from Kusagakure. These’re my compatriots, Hono Saya and Kisei Sachi, yeah? Everything’ll be alright now. We’re gonna get you all back home, safe n’ sound this eve– no matter what else may come.” It might’ve been a bold assertion, but he truly believes it.

Yumiko-san starts explaining the details of what happened, to all three of them– though Sachi or Saya both might find it pertinent to attend to other matters, it’s not like he’s got them on a leash. They’re informed about the ambush, how the ruffians at first seemed satisfied with intimidation alone, but how someone got it in their head to try and fight back. Chaos ensued, with the small party of bandits taking whatever they could carry and abandoning the scene earlier in the day.

"I’ve only got some other information from the town that may or may not be relevant,” Sachi replied to Saya, moving along the path as they made their way toward their destination. She listened to the ever so talkative Atagi who beat her in that aspect as well, nodding along to the dialogue, keeping her own thoughts at bay as she scanned the information he spoke into her brain.

"Five armed men huh,” Sachi briefly thought on it, her first encounter with bandits being similar. She wasn’t very confident then, but her older cousin helped her build it. She was also now better trained as well, thankfully, and ultimately agreed with Atagi’s words, that they shouldn’t show weakness to the civilians, at the very least, not to worry them.

"This is quite the scene," Sachi casually remarked as they approached the wreckage. Her calm demeanor remained intact as they surveyed the aftermath. Bowing respectfully to the woman who approached the shinobi team, she focused on the details of the incident. Her gaze shifted briefly to the wounded, contemplating whether the bandits were audacious yet powerful or simply fortunate that they've escaped.

Sachi didn’t have much real-world experience but after that first bandit mission, she aimed to become more attuned to signs preceding an attack, a lesson learned from a previous bandit mission. She considered herself fortunate for having sensed the bandits trailing the carriage during a previous escort mission with her cousin. This experience fueled her determination to gather more information on what to look out for, enabling her to better anticipate potential threats.

Once the explanations concluded, the kunoichi bowed slightly toward the merchant.
"Thank you for doing business with my clan, Ashikaga-san. Hohei-cho is still close by, and any one of us could escort you back whenever." Recognizing the Ashikaga name and understanding the importance of maintaining positive relations with business partners, Sachi expressed her gratitude. "Well then, if you would excuse me."

She swiftly moved to each makeshift bed, assessing the wounded to determine if any ailments required immediate attention. While not yet an official medical-nin, Sachi possessed the skills to address minor injuries, and wounds, and even perform basic stitching if necessary.

Out of habit, she retrieved her kiseru from the belt on her leg and lit it with a stamina restoration pellet. Though she harbored the genuine desire to alleviate the pain of those who had been attacked without knowledge of the exact location of their pain, effective treatment would be challenging. Consequently, she refrained from using the pellet's numbing effects even though she was craving it.

After making her rounds, Sachi assisted with the investigation efforts by scouting the area. She brought along her radio for quicker communication which was given to her after her mission with Taka. Despite not having extensive experience in scouting, she suspected a makeshift camp might be around, considering the amount in the shipment. If the bandits were planning another attack, they would likely be hiding out for a real assault later on during the day, perhaps even bringing more of their allies to the fray. Quietly maneuvering through the shrubbery, she checked the river line close to the city.

To her surprise, she heard murmuring in the distance and noticed a small cave nearby. There, she found the stash of stolen goods, guarded by a couple of bandits. Hiding her hair color with a jutsu, she crouched behind a bush, eavesdropping on the scrawny bandit's incessant whining as he conversed with the other.

"They'll regret not bringing us out, those bastards.”
"Quit yer yapping or I'll punch yer gut in.”

Observing them for a while, she wasn't entirely sure where the other bandits were, but she had a good theory. "I found the stolen items from the shipment, and I have reason to believe those responsible are heading back to the area of attack.” Knowing she wasn't quick enough to return before they arrived without the risk of getting spotted, she added, "I’d say in about 10-15 minutes,” estimating based on her knowledge of the area.

With Atagi taking point, Saya fell back behind the Uzumaki a step, allowing the rambunctious young man to lead the way while she and Sachi took up positions on either side. It was a fairly basic formation, the kind you learned to fall into in the Academy, but that didn’t make it a bad choice; more often than not a combat plans strength lay, not in the details, but in the ability of those who made it to adapt to the needs of the moment, and nothing was quite so adaptable as simple.

"Well, if it's only five armed men we should be good, right?" The Hono girl replied, smiling at her friend as Atagi went on, giving both her and the Kisei a small lecture about not showing weakness or apprehension to the civilians. It was something she already knew, but she didn’t let the repetition bother her- people like Atagi often said things well before their brain caught up with their mouth, so this wasn’t a case of him being sexist, just… somewhat overly theatrical. "We’ve got this."

The rest of the trip was, thankfully, uneventful, allowing the trio to arrive at their destination in relative peace; relative being the key word, as the scene that was splayed out before them was anything but peaceful. Carts were upturned, men and women sat or lay injured on makeshift cots, and one man, perhaps the instigator of the brawl, was dangerously still, not dead but clearly in need of serious medical care. Saya left those matters to the group's medic, trusting Sachi to handle what injuries she could while she and Atagi spoke to the caravan’s leader.

"And I am Honō Saya, Ashikaga-san." Saya said after Atagi introduced himself, her head dipping down in a polite, formal bow, younger to elder, that both gave the lady merchant the respect her position was due without showing her any formal deference or perceived authority. She was older, yes, but a civilian had only so much sway when it came to Shinobi matters- and while she wasn’t a Yoton wielder, she was still a Hono. That carried weight. The redhead listened intently to the woman’s explanation, mentally taking notes even as she set a list of things they needed to do in order.

They’ll likely be back sooner rather than later. She thought, glancing between the wounded and uninjured, her lips pursing in a thin line as Sachi spoke; she didn’t disagree with her friend perse, but the idea of splitting up when faced with a numerically superior opponent seemed… poor. "We shouldn’t split our forces just yet. They might come back, after all."

With that said, Saya went about patrolling the outer edge of the caravan’s wreckage, looking for clues as to what direction the bandits might have come from- and what direction they had gone. Sachi joined her for a few minutes before heading off to scout the surrounding area. The Honō girl remained behind, reassuring the civilians and keeping an eye out for any more bandits. Nothing happened for a good ten minutes, but eventually Sachi’s voice came through their personal radio and informed both her and Atagi of a nearby group of bandits.

Tch. Greedy bastards. She thought, drawing Hitsuiken as she focused her chakra through the blade, focusing it through the whirls and twists of a simple but extraordinarily powerful seal- the Bakukami no Jutsu, or Exploding Seal Jutsu, was one many Shinobi were familiar with, though this one was quite a bit stronger than the standard one used on exploding tags. Moving in the direction she had last seen Sachi, the redhead stabbed her blade into a point in the ground between two trees, ink surging from the surface as she attached the seal to the dirt.

"Sachi, this is Saya." She said once the seal was planted, her voice soft and distinctly different from how she normally spoke; the cheeriness was gone, replaced by a quiet, steely seriousness that transformed her into a very different person. "If you can, try to bring them towards the treeline. I’ve marked a spot with a seal that should take a good chunk of them out if we can maneuver them under it, but you’ll need to be out of range before I detonate it."

It wasn’t a perfect plan, but so long as Sachi moved fast, she and Atagi could capitalize on the bandits greediness and catch them in a trap that they’d never get out of.

Combat Info
Jutsu Used:
NAME: Exploding Seal Jutsu [Bakukami no Jutsu] - Prepped and used on ground
RANK: C
CHAKRA USAGE: Medium - B Rank Seal
CLASSIFICATION: FĹŤinjutsu
ELEMENT: -
HANDSEALS: 0
DESCRIPTION: One of the simplest jutsu thought to almost all beginner fuuinjutsu users. This technique has been used for centuries being put on exploding notes of all sorts. The idea behind this jutsu is to seal a certain amount of the user's chakra inside of a seal and release it at a later date using a simple seal. The user is capable of inscribing the seal onto any [non human] surface and the explosion strength can be varied depending on how much chakra the user puts into the seal,C rank being your average explosive note.

SA's:
A Bright Burning Light [Enhanced Chakra Reserves]
Born with abnormally large chakra reserves, Saya is capable of utilizing more jutsu than the average person of her rank, and can continue to use them at a much higher rate, allowing her to fight longer than others of her rank can without running out of chakra.

Seals Are Cool, I Swear! [Fuinjutsu Proficiency]
Having spent much of her time as a Genin learning the intricacies of Fuinjutsu, Saya has a better understanding of how seals interact with chakra than most others of her rank, which has allowed her to implant Fuinjutsu onto an object struck by her blade, so long as she has prepared the technique beforehand. This does not allow a character to bypass any restrictions on a Fuinjutsu, and Saya must concentrate on the Fuinjutsu being used through the blade in order apply it, making it impossible to channel a Fuinjutsu through the blade while concentrating on another jutsu (or use another jutsu while a Fuinjutsu is channeled through it).

Equipment:
Yoton Forged Steel
Forged using a unique blend of Iron Ore that can only be smelted with Yoton Release chakra, Hitsuiken boasts a surprising level of durability for a weapon of its rank, allowing it to shrug off blows that would shatter lesser blades with nary a nick or scratch. Additionally, the blade rarely needs to be sharpened, as its edge is quite hard, though of course it does require polishing and maintenance from time to time (this does not mean it is any sharper than normal).

Chakra Conductive - Fuinjutsu
Created specifically with the users Fuinjutsu prowess in mind, Hitsuiken lives up to its name by enabling whoever wields it to channel fuuinjutsu through it so long as the character has the correlating SA. This allows the wielder to apply said seals to the surface of the next object the blades touches, be it organic or inorganic provided the technique itself can affect said object in the first place. This does not allow a character to bypass any restrictions on a Fuinjutsu, and the user most concentrate on the Fuinjutsu being used throught the blade in order apply it, making it impossible to channle a Fuinjutsu through the blade while concentrating on another jutsu (or use another jutsu while a Fuinjutsu is channeled through the blade).

Atagi finds himself somewhat amused at Sachi’s dealings; he’d worked with her a little already, and it was endlessly curious how someone so diminutive and otherwise cutesy-looking had ended up with a knack for interacting with folk like she was a good twenty years older. Perhaps that was the benefit of being apart of and even partly running a family business? More shinobi could stand to have a little education in the matters of business and diplomacy, even if just to make their disguises more convincing. An accusatory voice in his head reminds him that, more than likely, many of them do and that just because he doesn’t it’s not like that means it’s an experience that can or would apply to any and everyone.

His reliable kouhais spring to it in short order, and while it’s not like he’s lazing around(as he’s milling about to assuage folk and to discuss what to do from here on out with Ashikaga-san), it’s definitely not as impressive or as much work as tending to the wounded or scouting or even the act of setting a trap. Throwing a little salute to Sachi before she’s run off and reminding her to stay safe, Atagi lends his eyes to the efforts of keeping the caravan protected for the ten to twelve minutes that proceeded.

It’s the sound from the radio that draws Atagi to fully focus once more, though not in his ear- at his hip. Quickly, he scrambles to actually open up the little holster that the radio was in and drawing up a wired earpiece, tuning in proper. The news that the assailants are returning to the scene of the crime for a repeat should be irritating, even if they’ve already discussed the possibility. But between Atagi Uzumaki’s fervor for battle and his oft-mentioned love of protecting ‘the people’, his grin only widens, if indeed it changed at all from hearing what Sachi had to say. ”Heard loud and clear.” Was it any surprise that those who’d shamelessly take from others would double dip if they knew the well wasn’t dry yet?

Not at all, evidently.

He and Saya link up in short order and move toward an approximate spot between where Sachi’s gone off to scout to and the still-damaged caravan. Aureate irises fixate with rapt attention on the Hono as she executes the fuinjutsu with her sword, something he’s frankly never seen. ”Whoa. That’s not a normal Hono thing, is it?” If it was, he’s never seen Kojirou sling any seals with his sword- not that he could judge, being, of all things, an Uzumaki who couldn’t seal a paper bag shut. It’s not lost on him that Atagi ought to be preparing for an encounter as well, his hands weaving through a series of seals(really, only two) in front of his body, focusing and pulling out that ever-swirling tempest of chakra within him into a technique: the Kekkai no Yoroi, body taking on a silvery sheen of chakra as the barrier surrounds his physical form. Saya’s plan is a good one, so he’s got almost no alterations to it. In fact, he even offers himself up as further bait, taking position near where the exploding seal was set on the earth but far enough he could be out of the way in a hurry- getting caught in the trap himself’d be far from ideal. Still, the net gain of being able to distract or deceive a few of them into walking right into the deadly beguilement. Additionally, he serves the purpose of being a ‘beacon’ for Sachi so she herself doesn’t just wander into the Bakukami-- she was smart enough to understand he wouldn’t be standing right on top of it, or so his reasoning went.

"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."

"Roger that," the pinkette replied into her radio with a hushed voice, then moved up higher to locate the bandits that left the camp. While not well-versed, Sachi was familiar with fuinjutsu and always listened when Saya mentioned her training with seals. The Kisei was always fascinated with them and now had a chance to see it for herself.

After locating the ill-natured posse of hostile outlaws, she put her kiseru pipe away and then shouted out to them with a range of cruel insults that would get anyone riled up. She had memorized various amounts of lines from the streets of Hohei-Cho and hadn’t had any use for them until now–which was surprisingly useful. After the slew of insults, she added, "That’s what you get for attacking my family’s caravan!” Sachi was posing as a family member of the merchant family who was attacked, her hitai-ate not visible from the bandit's distance. Even though she was in her usual garbs, she still appeared to be a child from a wealthy family, harmless and looked like she could be kidnapped for ransom. She applied a similar method previously but her looks alone this time wouldn’t have caught the attention of those out on a mission for other goods so she associated herself with the goods.

Understandably, the bandits were pissed and immediately started after the young kunoichi, brandishing their weapons and spouting a slew of terrible threats. It was quite a bit more than 5, around 9, including the ones that guarded the stolen goods back at the small cave and additionally joined the bandit cause to kidnap the small child.

Since she scouted the area, her route was more efficient, allowing her to keep her distance from the raggedy group using her shortcuts. Even if she was objectively slower than bandits who moved around for a living, her memory made up for her lack of speed. "Almost there,” she said huffing into her radio, "Get ready.”

Eventually outpacing them into the shrubbery of the hills, she hid up in a tree as a clone jumped down into the open running towards the seal that her senpai put down. She knew Atagi and Saya were experienced enough to tell clones apart from the real given their experience. She was far enough away from the seal to stay safe if it detonated, but the bandits who hadn’t realized the one they were following was a clone continued to follow close behind angrily.

The fake reached the seal, turned around, and taunted them with faces before running past. The bandits still followed even after noticing the Uzumaki who stood there.

The girl continued to wait in the tree, popping a cautionary pellet into her pipe made up of wisteria plants as she was far enough away that the smoke wouldn’t reach the others. Taking out her senbon, she believed she wasn’t necessary for the oncoming fight but was ready to provide help from her vantage point. She also, selfishly, had a full vision of Saya and Atagi and couldn’t help but excitably watch on, even though the situation was dangerous.

Full Moon Wisteria Pellets

When exhaled by someone with the Nakahara [Verdant Haze] hijutsu, it creates a dense smoke cloud. Those within the smoke cloud will receive an instant hit to their nervous system due to the strong scent, causing their body to freeze up but for only an instant, stopping them in their tracks. They will return to normal nearly as quickly as they came, as the smoke lasts only a couple of seconds.

❌ Because of its high dissipation rate, the pellet is not compatible with x Kemuri Yoin [Lingering Smoke]. Addition not compatible with, x Shi no Wa [Circle of Death], Sumokudoragon [Smoke Dragon, and Sokubaku no Kemuri Kangoku [Binding Smoke Prison].

🌿Those with the [Verdant Haze] hijutsu are immune to the smoke.

🎐 All fuuton ninjutsu can dissipate the smoke.

Honō Saya

Honō Saya Avatar

Saya listened to her radio while Atagi moved into position, her honey-yellow eyes focused on the space between the trees where she had placed the seal, all else fading away as she waited. Part of her heard the Uzumaki’s question, but the social stigma of ignoring another’s question had been stifled for now; she had a friend with a band of armed men chasing after her. Atagi could wait until they were dead to have his curiosity sated.

So it was that the Hono girl stood there, hidden behind an upturned cart not far from the forest, gaze focused on the trees when she saw Sachi- both the real one and the clone she had summoned. The clone tore through the woods silently, drawing the nine bandits in towards the trap she had laid, pausing over it to taunt them some more before it ran off, further into the camp. The men followed, brandishing weapons, surging over the seal…

"Now!" Saya yelled as she formed a single hand seal, setting off the Bakukami in a shower of dirt, rocks, wood, and flame that tore into the crowd of bandits, pasting three of them immediately and pelting two others with enough shrapnel that they were effectively dead even it didn’t happen right away. Unfortunately, however, the back half of the group hadn’t quite been in range of the explosion, and while not a single one of them got out unscathed, their injuries were far from life-threatening.

The redhead didn’t hesitate though; with Hitsuken already out, she moved in, charging at the group before they could recover, confident that Atagi and Sachi would back her up as she slashed at the nearest bandit, a bald man with a heavy axe in one hand a stump for the other, his face bleeding from a handful of cuts.

Combat Info
Jutsu Used:
NAME: Exploding Seal Jutsu [Bakukami no Jutsu] - Prepped and used on ground
RANK: C
CHAKRA USAGE: Medium - B Rank Seal (Used)
CLASSIFICATION: FĹŤinjutsu
ELEMENT: -
HANDSEALS: 0
DESCRIPTION: One of the simplest jutsu thought to almost all beginner fuuinjutsu users. This technique has been used for centuries being put on exploding notes of all sorts. The idea behind this jutsu is to seal a certain amount of the user's chakra inside of a seal and release it at a later date using a simple seal. The user is capable of inscribing the seal onto any [non human] surface and the explosion strength can be varied depending on how much chakra the user puts into the seal, C rank being your average explosive note.

Uzumaki Atagi
Keep on keeping on.
quote
Uzumaki Atagi Avatar
groupGrass Shinobi
age 21 years old birthday April 29th rank Genin occupation
Virtue is bold, and goodness is never fearful

Atagi doesn’t ever fully lose his mirth, even when it’s time to be serious. His eyes carry a different quality to them, sharpened like steel…but they never lose that glimmer of optimism and exuberance that says this is enjoyable, that life itself, whatever problems or predicaments it’d bring, was a blast. Part of him is a little worried about Sachi, diminutive as she was…but a shinobi was a shinobi, he reminds himself. Trust in her and her ability, a little, just as you would any other peer.

It’s quiet, aside from the usual ambient noise in these parts, for a scant few moments. Almost peaceful. Quiet, that is, until sound began to trickle from the shrubbery. The loudest ones were audible first; shouting. Cries to stop, cries to ”Get ‘er!”, the sound of makeshift armor and pilfered weapons clinking and clanging follow as the gang of bandits– a dozen? No, a little less- were scrambling after ‘Sachi’. Crimson brows raise ever so slightly in the universal sign for surprise. He’s carefully positioned to help lure them in, so already, he’s turning to follow the clone in running away, perhaps lending some extra legitimacy to the ruse. ”Holy hat!”

He’s able to throw a glance over the shoulder at the group, only fully turning once Saya’s given the signal. The plan goes off beautifully, a wave of sheer noise and heat emanating from the blast zone, throwing earth into the air. Three of their would-be assailants are turned into little more than tattered sets of giblets only vaguely resembling human beings immediately, something that probably would’ve been horrifying to the average person. Two of them are left in horrid shape, sprawled out on the ground with their lives uncertain. That left…four.

One for each of them, and an extra. The Uzumaki is quick to dart into action, body lurching forward, chakra redirected in the body, flowing to the legs, utilizing the Shunpo. It appears that he’s taken only a single step, but he closes the gap remaining between him and one of the brigands in a single step, briefly obfuscated from the untrained eye. ”Soryah!” he gives a shout, throwing a leg out in a high kick, twisting his body to convert some of the momentum from the technique into force. His opponent, a man that must’ve been in his fourties with long, curled black hair and a facial tattoo lets out a yip as his hand’s struck, dropping the pig-iron mace that he was wielding to the ground. Atagi doesn’t give him a chance to recover, following up by lunging forth, lowering his profile, and driving a fist into the bandit’s gut, working his way ‘up’ with an elbow to the solar plexus.

Withdrawing to try and return to a neutral standing position as the bandit tumbles to the ground, briefly incapacitated, Atagi finds his body moving almost– almost-- before he even registers what’s going on, the only indicators the grunt of physical exertion and the 'feel' of something next to him. One of the other ruffians had swung a glaive at his side, aiming for the spot between the shoulder and neck, and the Uzumaki’s arm flies up reflexively, catching the brunt of the chop with the pack of metal training weights affixed to it, letting out a hiss from the physical feedback, but manages to stand his ground instead of stumbling, directing his gaze toward them as to not be caught by surprise again.

Jutsu/SA’s:

NAME: Subakage-ryĹŤ: Shunpo [New Shadow Style: Flash Steps]
RANK: D
CHAKRA USAGE: Low-High
CLASSIFICATION: Taijutsu
ELEMENT: N/A
HANDSEALS: N/A
REQUIREMENT: Subakage-ryū: Hohō [New Shadow Style: Step Method]
DESCRIPTION:
Within the Step Method's branching techniques, the Flash Steps is the most refined for pure velocity and acceleration in one, linear direction. From the point of origin until the shinobi stops, they are able to move at an incredible pace, practically vanishing from sight. However, this is an incredibly taxing method of movement, and if used to move too far it can stress the body. It cannot reach the speed granted by Body Flicker, but it is not quite as devastating on the user. Traveling beyond fifteen meters with one step will cause great stress to the body. It still has a high chakra cost, but the muscle strain will immobilize the shinobi for one round as their body recovers. It is possible to utilize multiple flash steps back to back, but cost must be paid individually.
1-5m (Low)
6-10m (Medium)
11-15m (High)

In the Nick of Time
Atagi has honed his combat instinct and reflexes via dedicated training (and at least one ‘practical experience’ in the form of having life and limb imperiled by a particular Taki-nin) to the point where he can, much of the time, reflexively move in response to threatening stimuli. Most often, these combat reflexes are defensively oriented, a la blocking or dodging. He’s nicknamed them his ‘God-Speed Impulses’, which is an obvious exaggeration.
