[Jinjōi Chiyo]

There were lots of extracurricular classes at the Academy, for kids to become better at different things.

Some were led by academy teachers, others by volunteering chuunins or even jounins! One such class was dedicated to ninjutsu practice and chakra control. It was run by an old lady who used to be an academy teacher during her prime, and couldn't let go of the profession after it was her time to retire. She looked very silly wearing that old ninja vest over her kimono, and having a walking stick.

Just as the students assembled and took their places, Obasa-sensei briefly walked out, only to return leading a girl by her hand. The girl she led into the class had white hair, and was hardly as dainty and lady-like as most girls around here, her outfit being a boyish kimono and kendo pants. She was very embarrassed by being led in this way, one could tell from the redness of her face. But, out of respect for the elders, the newcomer did not pull away from the old lady's grasp.

'This was such a bad idea...'

But what other choices were there! No matter how many times she tried, water-walking wasn't getting any easier, and self-teaching chakra control wasn't exactly something she was good at! As the white-haired girl mulled over her failures inside her own head, the old lady introduced her:

"Hello, class~ This is Chiyo-chan, she will be practicing with us from now on!"

"Hello..." - Chiyo looked over the people here, and bowed, politely. Feeling as though being polite helped her against the muffled giggles from the back. The old lady smiled and patted her on the back.

"Today we will be practicing ninjutsu, genjutsu and other things. Please, split in pairs. Would anyone like to take our newcomer as a partner for this lesson?"

The classroom reverberated with chatter as Obasa-sensei made her entrance, accompanied by a new student named Chiyo-chan. Uka's eyes lit up with recognition, and she couldn't contain her excitement. "That must be our partner, Momo," she whispered animatedly to her plush toy Momo. As anticipated, Obasa-sensei inquired if anyone would be willing to pair up with the newcomer, and Uka eagerly raised her hand, exclaiming, "Haaai, I am alone!" Her hand waved energetically, mirroring the enthusiasm in her voice, and her smile remained unwavering.

After Chiyo took the seat next to Uka, Obasa-sensei proceeded to explain the class dynamics. "This class caters to both beginners in chakra control and genjutsu, as well as those more advanced in their skills," she clarified, scanning the room with satisfaction. "All pairings seem to align with my vision," she added, a smile gracing her aged features. "Today, we will be practicing the Surface Dyeing Jutsu, a technique designed to dull the color and shine of weapons or unique hair for stealth missions."

Obasa-sensei's gaze then shifted to the kunai placed in front of each newer student. "As everyone can see," she gestured towards the metallic tools, "there is a real kunai in front of you. Please be careful when handling it, because today we will be practicing the Surface Dyeing Jutsu with these specific kunai." Pausing, she continued, "This technique necessitates a single handseal and precise chakra control. You must release just enough chakra from your hand to cover the entire kunai, dulling its color without excess." The board now displayed key instructions: "One handseal -> Control chakra -> Just enough -> Cover the weapon." Returning her attention to the class, Obasa-sensei concluded with encouragement for both experienced and newer students. "Experienced students have their tasks, while newer friends, don't hesitate to seek advice from your partners. Best of luck to all," she smiled, gracefully making her way to the teacher's desk with the support of her walking stick.

[Jinjōi Chiyo]

'Oh... I know that girl... I think.'

The class was split in pairs, and one of the girls expressed a desire to have Chiyo as a partner. The kimono-clad girl approached and sat opposite to her, as did everyone else, in order to see what the other one was doing. Chiyo looked over Uka, taking note of the bright and fancy-looking colors and fabrics, that looked expensive, especially when contrasted with her own rather plain dark purple colors. The turquoise sash was probably the most expensive part of the outfit, and even it could not compare. 

Chiyo was aware of that, now.

But it didn't matter. What mattered was the lesson. It was spelled out on the blackboard, and they had to go at it, too. Looking at the girl again, Chiyo waved her hand a little, in a more casual greeting. "Hey..." - she said quietly. "Thanks. For... you know, raising your hand."

She moved closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. 

"To be honest, I don't know the first thing about whatever it is what we're supposed to do." 

Chiyo looked over her shoulder, towards the blackboard again. Following the instructions, she took the first step, and made a handseal. But for what was to come next...

"So... do I visualize the effect inside of my head? Or ... something?" - the girl asked. She didn't have experience with this type of ninjutsu. That particular handseal was used for plenty of jutsus. So... which one would work? She looked back at the girl in front of her, hoping she'd explain. She seemed a whimsical, genjutsu-ish type. No callouses on her hands from swords and stuff. So this hand to be her thing, right?

"What's your name, by the way..."

As Chiyo came closer Uka had a feeling that she had seen Chiyo somewhere, but couldn't figure out where. Maybe the Academy, after all, both of them studied here. She pondered a bit but in the end dismissed the idea, as Chiyo spoke up. "Mhm, no biggies," Uka responded, "by any chance have we met each other before, somewhere? You look kind of familiar." She couldn't contain her curiosity.

Uka whispered back, "Don't worry I will help you out." She pondered a bit about how to explain it to Chiyo, as anything related to chakra control was quite familiar to Uka and nowadays came easily to her. "Uhm, so what I suggest for you to do is, make the handseal and try to move your chakra to your hand, try to feel it flowing in you. When you have that down and you can steadily keep the chakra in your hand, you can move on to the next step. Step two is to make the handseal again, but this time move the chakra onto the kunai, and imagine the kunai's color becoming duller." She stopped letting Chiyo absorb the information. "But, be very careful with the amount you output, as too much will drain you quickly, while too little won't dull the kunai's color."

"I am Yugau Uka, and this is Momo," she smiled back at Chiyo while proudly showing off her plush toy, which was a bit unusual. "Why don't you try it that way."

While Chiyo would try and master the movement of her chakra and the needed amount to output for this specific jutsu, Uka had her task - trap Chiyo in a genjutsu, so that she doesn't notice that. As Chiyo started to work Uka would nudge Momo, and a butterfly would come out landing on Chiyo. with a swift movement, Uka would perform a single handseal for Chou no Hibiki jutsu trapping Chiyo in a light genjutsu.

The result should be Chiyo hearing random, phantom sounds of footsteps around her.

[Jinjōi Chiyo]

"I'm Jinjoi Chiyo." - the girl replied, bowing her head a little, in appreciation of instructions she was given.

"We're probably in the same class. Just on opposite ends of it, or something." - she shrugged. Right now, she was trying to wrap her head around the technique she was just explained. It was so very different from swordfighting. Chiyo's favorite craft revolved around stances, positioning, footwork. Everything was very ... regulated, in a way. Ninjutsu was more revolved around feeling and stuff. Hmpf, feelings!

"I'm gonna try it now..."

Putting her hand on the blade, Chiyo closed her eyes and focused. Channeling chakra into her hand, putting it over the shiny kunai... Careful not to put too much... Not too much... too much... TOO MUCH!

*POOF!*

She failed. Gave too much in a single charge of chakra. It did something alright. Covered the whole thing in purple paint, coating both the weapon, and her hand, and her sleeve, as though she spilled paint all over.

"Darn it..." - Chiyo muttered, brushing her hand against a piece of paper. So engrossed in the process, the little samurai girl didn't notice her partner casting something else. Or a little butterfly sitting on her head. It looked kind of cute there too! And the soon the spell was cast, Chiyo heard some steps behind herself.

"Teacher! I..." - she looked over her shoulder, wanting to ask a question.

But there was no one there!

Uka observed Chiyo's attempt at the chakra control exercise, her keen eyes following each movement and nuance. As Chiyo struggled with the amount of chakra, transforming the scene into a messy burst of purple, Uka maintained a patient smile. It was clear that Chiyo's background in sword-fighting made this transition into chakra manipulation a bit challenging. Uka nodded understandingly.

"Darn it..." Chiyo muttered in frustration, prompting a sympathetic expression from Uka. "It's okay, Chiyo. It takes some practice. Let me show you again," Uka said reassuringly.

As Uka prepared to give another demonstration, Chiyo suddenly turned to address someone behind her. "Teacher! I..." Chiyo began, looking over her shoulder, only to find no one there. Uka concealed a grin, pleased with the success of her genjutsu. She continued the charade, pretending to look around with mild confusion.

"Strange, I didn't hear anyone. Maybe you're imagining things, Chiyo," Uka said with a playful tone. "Now, let's get back to the chakra exercise. Remember, it's about balance and control. Give it another try, and this time, focus on the sensation of the chakra flowing steadily." After explaining it one more time, Uka prepared for the next phase of her task.

This time a group of moths flew out of Momo and while Chiyo's eyes were fully focused on the kunai and her task, Uka performed a single-hand seal for the Ga no Be-ru jutsu and had them fly close to Chiyo's eyes releasing a fine dust that induced a mild genjutsu upon contact with her eyes. Chiyo should perceive a temporary distortion of her vision, as if a mysterious veil has been cast over her surroundings, making it challenging to see clearly. But for Chiyo who is practicing the surface dying jutsu, it could also appear as a side effect of that, possibly making her rub her eyes.

Nevertheless, now she should not only hear footsteps time from to time but also have a bit of trouble seeing clearly.

"Ehh? Right... someone must've walked by or something..."

Chiyo was very a very trusting girl. So, the thought of being put under a casual genjutsu never went through her mind. Besides, Uka seemed like a nice girl, soft and encouraging. Like girls should be, her mom often said! A standard Chiyo not always lived up to. So, she remained sitting where she was, with a cute butterfly fluttering on top of her head, as if it were a hairclip. Having cleaned the weapon from the makeshift paint she produced, the girl decided to try again. 

'Alright... Make a seal... concentrate...'

She did just that, and extended her chakra to the weapon again. This time, Chiyo took it slowly. Starting from the tip, and coating the kunai inch by inch. It felt ... draining, doing so. Like a lot of extra chakra was wasted. But the result seemed to be worth it. At least up to a point, when the girl's vision suddenly became blurry. As if sand got into her eyes.

"A-achoo!"

She sneezed in a reflex, and brought her sleeve to rub at her eyes. Dropping the ninjutsu she was practicing half-way.

"Dammit... The paint must have gotten into my eyes... Excuse me..."

Chiyo would try and stand up, and feel her way towards the handwasher, located somewhere on the wall of this room, in the corner. All while having a veritable crown of moths and butterflies sitting on her head! A few of the other classmates giggled as she passed them by.

"Not funny..." - Chiyo grumbled to them, in return.

Uka observed Chiyo's struggle with a mix of encouragement and amusement, her eyes reflecting patience and understanding. As Chiyo sneezed and rubbed her eyes due to the perceived paint irritation, Uka maintained her reassuring smile. The playful charade of a non-existent teacher and the subtle genjutsu were all part of her plan to challenge Chiyo's focus and test her adaptability.

"Take your time, Chiyo-chan. It happens to the best of us," Uka said with a supportive tone, watching as Chiyo made her way toward the handwasher. The butterflies and moths continued to adorn Chiyo's head like a whimsical crown, remnants of Uka's playful genjutsu. The other classmates, still amused by the unexpected turn of events, exchanged glances and stifled giggles.

As Chiyo reached the hand washer and began to clean her eyes, Uka decided to let the situation play out a bit longer before revealing her involvement. The room returned to its ordinary state as the illusions lifted and the small critters scattered to not get spotted by Chiyo, and Uka observed with keen interest.

After a moment, Chiyo looked up, blinking as her vision cleared. The confusion on her face was evident, a mixture of irritation from the perceived paint in her eyes and the unexpected distractions. Uka remained patient, allowing Chiyo to gather herself.

As Chiyo turned back towards the training area, ready to resume the chakra exercise, Uka finally spoke, her voice calm and composed. "You're doing well, Chiyo-chan. Keep that focus, and let's continue with the chakra exercise." Uka chose not to mention the genjutsu just yet, curious to see how Chiyo would respond and adapt to the unexpected challenges. Of course, others didn't mention anything too as the class was still in session.

Chiyo was a trusting type.

So the thought of the other girl putting a genjutsu on her did not even occur to her. At least not yet. After washing her face, everything seemed to be fine. No more odd blurry vision, and no weird footsteps too. She got back to her place in front of Uka, and breathed out.

"Alright... Lets get back to it... I'll make it work this time!"

She cracked her neck, and resumed the task. A part of the kunai was already dulled in color, somewhat. So the previous strategy had worked! All she had to do was continue it, until all of the weapon is covered and made less shiny! Holding the handseal, Chiyo put in the effort. Her gaze though briefly caught upon Uka's weapon.

"Huh?" - she blinked a few times, briefly stopping the jutsu she was making.

"How come you didn't do anything with your kunai? You've been at it for as long as I was. You need help or anything?" - Chiyo offered. It was strange though. She remembered clearly that Uka was making some jutsu at the same time as she did. But ... there was no result. Not even a failed one.

Uka couldn't help but appreciate Chiyo's trust and earnest efforts. As Chiyo resumed the chakra exercise, Uka maintained her friendly smile, eager to support her classmate in overcoming the unexpected challenges.

When Chiyo brought up the apparent lack of change in Uka's kunai, Uka chuckled softly, finding Chiyo's observation endearing. "Oh, Chiyo-chan, you've got a sharp eye! It's all part of the ninja art, you know – a bit of mystery and surprise. I've been working on a different technique, a subtle touch that doesn't show right away," Uka explained with a playful twinkle in her eyes.

She leaned in a bit closer as if sharing a secret. "And hey, you're doing fantastic! Your dedication is shining through. It's not just about the result, but the journey. Keep going, and you'll master this in no time."

With a mischievous glint in her eyes, she subtly released a few moths and a butterfly from within Momo. As the tiny creatures fluttered into the air, Uka focused her chakra for a moment, preparing for the next step.

"Oh, alright... If you say so. What technique are you working on, though?"

Chiyo asked, while doing her own thing, diligently trying to cover the polished kunai with chakra paint, or something like that. She didn't expect anything from her partner, but her focus on the blade did help her notice something. The polished edge reflected what was above her, and so she did notice a few moths and butterflies hovering over her head again! It made her look up. She hadn't seen any in the classroom before!

"Huh?" - Chiyo tilted her head curiously, just as the genjutsu was cast, and she felt as though she was being dusted by them! Covering her eyes with one hand she flailed with the other, to make them go away! 

"Hey! What gives! Shoo! Shoo!"

It was at that moment when the girl was able to put two plus two together. Her 'partner' doing some weird jutsu coinciding with strange bugs appearing, and her eyes getting all red and blurry again! She removed the hand from her eyes, them being a bit red from all the rubbing she already did, looking directly at Uka.

"Are you doing this?!"

She didn't sound amused at all. The bug dust in the air, or its perceived presence, made Chiyo sneeze loudly, causing the class to giggle, again. Which made Chiyo even more flustered. She didn't like being the butt end of a joke!

Uka couldn't help but chuckle at Chiyo's reaction to the genjutsu, and with a half-apologetic smile, she confessed, "My bad, Chiyo-chan. Guilty as charged. It was my turn for the lesson, but don't be too upset. It was a collective task." She gestured towards the nodding classmates, indicating that others had fallen for some type of genjutsu as well, with Chiyo being the last to realize. "Sensei, Chiyo-chan too has discovered the genjutsu," the 'Too' meant that others had done so before Chiyo and she was the last.

The teacher seemed pleased with the overall outcome, commenting, "Well, that went smoother than expected. Those familiar with genjutsu caught on faster, a reminder to always stay vigilant. Now, for the more experienced, the secret task was to trap their partner in a genjutsu while they focused on their assignment. Don't be mad at your friends." She added as she drew some conclusions to the class about how important it is to dip one's feet into different types of shinobi ways and always be aware of one's surroundings, before slowly leaving the classroom.

Uka apologized again to Chiyo, directing a warning glare at the classmates who couldn't keep their laughter in check. Despite Chiyo being unaware that others had also been teased, Uka admired her intense focus, possibly attributed to her proficiency in bukijutsu.

Once again Uka, extending a friendly gesture, proposed, "Hey, to make it up to you, how about I treat you to something at a nearby cafe? Grab your stuff, I'll be waiting downstairs." With that, she gathered her belongings and headed downstairs, leaving Chiyo with the choice to join her for a friendly post-lesson chat.

[Jinjōi Chiyo]

Chiyo pouted a bit, since everyone here seemed to be in on the joke. 

'What, am I supposed to expect a genjutsu everywhere I go?' - she asked herself. But maybe this was the point. Shinobi have to be vigilant, even when at home! Because a deliberate enemy would strike even here, where one would least expect it. Still, it left a sour taste in her mouth. The girl was proud, and she didn't enjoy being laughed at, or made an unwitting dummy in someone else's training...

Without being fairly compensated, at least!

When offered to be treated at a nearby cafe, her pout quickly turned into a grin, and she gave the girl a thumbs up. "Yeah, sure! I like onigiri, they look very traditional and cool. And also cherry soda."

Much less traditional, but still cool! It had a fizzy feel to it, and had a pleasant flavor. With her new-found acquaintance-friend, Chiyo would go to the cafeteria after class. She'd gorge herself at another's expense, and in return tell her lots of cool stories about samurai and why she likes them. And also discuss genjutsu and how to better fight against them. She was not gonna be made a fool again so easily!

What was left in the wake of the class was a half-painted kunai. She did a diligent work on it, but too slow, and too much "chakra paint" put on it. Not bad for a first try, but she'd have to do... so much more!
