'Such a quaint little assignment.'

Money was never an issue. And besides, for such a mundane task, the village paid a pittance. But it was a way to spend time outside of the stiffling confines of the clan compound. Getting to know her teammates, that sort of thing. Yashura was looking forward to this little outdoor trip. Given her recent placement in a different team, she had to do the legwork of studying her companions all over again. Practice made perfect. Hopefully, they would be worthwhile.

The nice young lady sat on the bench, not too far from the Southern Gates. The gate guardian was stern, just like a guard should be, but also nice and respectful. He explained that none may venture through the gate without some paperwork signed. Yashura thought it would be prudent to wait for her teammate, before going. The task was simple enough. Something was messing with the construction of a new road into the southern archipelago. They had to take care of it. 

'Hmm... perhaps it was a beaver. Felling a tree across the road...' - the girl allowed her thoughts to drift. She had seen the majestic creature once. It was lovely. Perhaps, they could resolve the issue without bloodshed. If not, oh well...

It was easy to mistake Yashura for a civilian. Her clothes were colorful, her haori repeating the pattern of a fancy butterfly. But underneath there was a dark-purple shirt, and matching hiking pants. Walking sandals from nice (and expensive!) sandal wood. Though one might not notice, when looking too hard into it. No shinobi head protector either, as far as one could see. No visible weapons, either. An impression of a rich someone's young daughter. Humming a tune, Yashura did, nevertheless, remain vigilant of all of her surroundings.

Dressed in her usual attire with her light blue hair tied up in a ponytail An felt a surge of anticipation as she made her way to the South Gate, eager to meet her teammate Shouki Yashura for their first assignment together. Hopping skillfully from one rooftop to another, An couldn't help but conceal her excitement, mindful not to come across as overly exuberant upon meeting Yashura.

Her uchigatana firmly in hand, An arrived at the gate to find only a stern guard and a dark-haired girl seated on a bench, presumably her teammate. An looked around as she tightened her grip on her uchigatana, but she couldn't see anyone else. An could only conclude that the dark-haired girl was Shouki Yashura. "Ohayou gozaimasu," she said as she approached, "I am Gurē An. It's a pleasure to meet you, Yashura-san." She smiled as she greeted Yashura.

Yashura appeared to have yet to complete the paperwork required to leave the village and was gracious enough to wait for An, which made a favorable impression on An. Maybe she and the rest of her genin team can become good friends. "I appreciate you waiting for me. Should we go do the paperwork?" she asked, her voice friendly.

Fill out some paperwork and show their identification scrolls and the two were outside the gates. "Shall we go?" An would ask before departing with Yashura to their destination.

'A girl from the Gure clan. How curious...'

Yashura smiled, and stood up, straightening out. When standing on her feet, the girl loomed over her diminutive companion, being a foot and a half taller than she. She was the older one, after all, and growing into becoming a fine lady. Her eyes briefly looked over her partner for the mission. The girl was small, but she carried a big sword. She was polite, and the expression of her face was that of excitement. For the mission, or for the meetup? Perhaps, both?

"A pleasure to meet you too, dear~ Let us be on our way. We just need to pass the papers to that young man over there." - Yoshiro nodded towards the guard.

The check-out did not take too long. They filled out the papers, saying who they were, where they were going and why, and approximate time for them to return. After presenting the mission papers, the two were out the gates, and into the wild beyond. Yashura took a deep breath and smiled. Even the air outside felt better than inside of the village.

"It will take us some time to get to the southern archipelago. Plenty for us to get to know each other better. Would you like a piece of candy?" - she asked, reaching into a pocket of her travel bag. Fishing out a minty green caramel piece in a paper wrapper, to offer to An. A token of good will, on her part. And so they went, on their way, towards the objective.

"I wonder what is it that delays the road construction... That requires novice shinobi to take care of. Have you ever been to those parts, An-san?"

An graciously accepted the candy, savoring the sweet flavor as it melted in her mouth. She couldn't help but appreciate the thoughtful gesture from Yashura. "Thank you, this is really nice," she expressed with a genuine smile.

As they continued their journey, Yashura brought up the topic of the southern archipelago, prompting An to delve into her own experience in that region. "Yes, I have been there once," An responded, her eyes reflecting a moment of recollection. She recounted a mission where she was tasked with escorting a group of merchants and construction workers who sought to establish new homes. However, their plans took an unexpected turn when they were ambushed by four thugs along the way.

A Chuunin senpai accompanied her, and together they efficiently dealt with the threat, ensuring the safe completion of their mission. Despite the tension of the encounter, An confessed to being a bit too nervous to fully appreciate the scenery during her first mission. The details were somewhat blurry, clouded by the adrenaline and anxiety of the situation.

Curious to hear about Yashura's experiences, An inquired, "Have you been to the southern parts too? Anything interesting happen on your end?" As they continued their journey towards the southern archipelago, it did not take long for An's curiosity to get the better of her. Looking at Yashura, she couldn't help but wonder about her teammate's experiences. "So, Yashura-san, what kind of missions do you enjoy the most? Anything you find particularly challenging or exciting?" As the landscape changed around them, An's eyes darted to the surroundings. "By the way, have you encountered any unique or dangerous creatures on your missions? I remember facing a pack of rather aggressive wolves during one assignment. It was quite the adrenaline rush," she shared.

"I have not been in many places outside of our village, no. This will be my first trip to the South."

There was a forelorn note to Yashura's voice, as she spoke. The clan was stringent with outside assignments. She was hoping that, by proving her trustworthiness and success in this mission, that it would pave the way to doing things outside of the stringent confines of Kirigakure. Of course, such thoughts she could never voice out loud. Not as the model student of the Shouki clan. 

Which was why she had to choose words carefully, both with friends and strangers. Could never know when the wrong ears might be listening. And even if this girl appeared to be innocent and honest enough... she could, with no ill intent, tell someone who'd cause harm to Yashura's carefully-constructed image. So, when asked about which mission she preferred, the girl smiled.

"My clan is ancient and known for its mighty warriors. One of them, Shouki Kumori, the Dragon of the Mist, is holding the counsil seat for many years." - the girl looked into the distance. "I prefer missions that could prove me worthy of my ancestor's heritage." 

A vague responce hiding a lie. Yashura never really liked dangerous and combative missions. They put her life in danger, before that of her clan. And she did not intend to sacrifice herself for them. Still, it was an answer expected of her, and it was the one given. Keeping a vigil look-around, while they traveled, the girl tried to be keenly aware of threats. Looking at her new acquaintance, she hummed: 

"Which is why I asked to be assigned to this mission. There is a chance things might go wrong. Keep a sharp eye now... We're approaching the road's end."

Seamlessly, Yashura reached into her butterfly-like haori. And rested her hand on the hilt of her hidden blade.

An nodded as she listened to Yashura's recount of her limited travels outside the village. She could sense a hint of longing in Yashura's voice, a desire to explore beyond the familiar confines of Kirigakure. An understood the constraints of clan expectations and the delicate balance Yashura had to maintain between duty and personal aspirations.

She recognized the weight of ancestral expectations, having her own family's legacy to uphold. An's smile remained genuine as she replied, "It's commendable to honor your clan's legacy. Shouki-dono's reputation surely adds an extra layer of pride to your missions."

The mention of approaching the road's end heightened her senses, and she nodded in acknowledgment. The subtle tension in the air didn't escape her notice, and An discreetly adjusted the grip on the hilt of her own weapon, ready for whatever awaited them.

The duo pressed forward along the narrow path, the atmosphere took a sudden turn. The rhythmic sounds of their footsteps were disrupted by a sudden rustle in the bushes, and without warning, a massive wild boar burst onto the trail. Its tusks gleamed menacingly, and its eyes reflected a wild determination. An's eyes widened as she instinctively moved closer to Yashura, her hand tightening around the hilt of her weapon.

The boar, likely the culprit causing havoc on the roads, barreled towards them with surprising speed, "I think that is our culprit." The forest echoed with the thundering hooves of the enraged creature. An, before drawing her weapon threw a few kunais at the boar to try and diverge its path and positioned herself beside her teammate. The boar charged, its massive frame making it a formidable opponent.

'Commendable... Yes. That is why I am doing it.'

Yashura nodded and smiled.

"Thank you. I'm sure you make your clan proud, also.' - she said. Wondering if the smiles and admirations from An were genuine. They seemed to be, but then again... for all she knew, this girl could be a skilled deceiver... Much like herself. Though all things considered ... 'Unlikely.'

These thoughts had to be considered later, though. The culprit announced itself, through a rustling of the bushes. Stampeding out of it came a big wild boar. Not a beaver, as Yashura first suspected, not at all! A dangerous beast, with tusks big enough to gore a hunter, if they managed to ram them through. And ram it did, or try to, making a beeline for both girls. Having expected danger, though, Yashura was ready. 

Noting where the sun was in the sky, she angled herself, and drew her blade from underneath the haori. As she did, she caught one of the rays, which gleamed the sunlight straight into the beast's eyes, likely blinding it. That done, the evasion was simple enough - to simply step out of the way of the charge. And with the blade drawn, moving in one fluid motion, Yashura struck the side of the beast, seeking to sever the ligaments and muscles on where its front leg was attached to its body. With the purpose of making the beast physically slower, making it harder for the boar to attack... or retreat. 

"Lets not let it get away."

An's eyes squinted as the wild boar charged at them. The conversation about clan legacies was abruptly interrupted by the urgent need to deal with the massive creature. An quickly grabbed some kunais and threw them at the boar, aiming to steer it away. Despite her efforts, the boar stayed on course, determined to reach them.

Feeling the rush of adrenaline, An moved closer to Yashura, preparing for the impending clash. She watched Yashura deftly draw her blade and use the sunlight to blind the charging boar. An acknowledged the tactical move, appreciating her teammate's quick thinking. Her swift and precise movements with her blade impressed An.

As Yashura made her move, severing the ligaments on the boar's front leg, An seized the opportunity. With a graceful yet swift motion - Iaido, drew her weapon, a finely crafted blade. Positioning herself strategically, An aimed for the other side of the boar, creating a pincer movement with Yashura to limit the creature's mobility further. The boar, now slowed and surrounded, let out a guttural snarl of frustration.

An's gaze met Yashura's, a silent agreement passing between them. Ready for the confrontation, "I think we almost have it," they faced the wild boar together, a united front against the formidable opponent that stood before them.

'A boar is strong and tough... But hardly a match for a human...' 

It made Yashura wonder why genins were sent to hunt them, then. Was it for foraging practice? Look at that thing, it is crippled already, and the fight did not even start. As the beast sluggishly turned around for another go, the colorfully-clad genin looked over her blade, its thin edge stained with red. Then the realization hit her.

"I wonder why we are assigned these missions. Academy students are already used to the sight of blood."

A very sombre, even macabre remark. Yashura wanted to finish this quickly. Fighting a dumb animal was not a test of skill she envisioned. It was ... boring, pardon the pun. And besides, shinobi were supposed to be efficient, were they not? Hmm... how to kill the beast, though. Its hide was tough and it had a lot of blood in it to waste. 'A strike through the eye would do, but that would come at a threat of being close to those horns. Hmm...'

She had an idea. Though it would not be pretty. Reaching into her ninja pouch with her free hand, she pulled out a kunai and around 5 explosive tags. All of which were ready to be wrapped around the handle of the weapon. All she needed now was to place the thing onto a vulnerable spot and then...

"Distract it for me." - Yashura said as she began circling the creature from one side. There were two of them, and only one of boar. It could only track a single target, at a time. She would wait for the opportune time to strike.

An's pulse quickened as she locked eyes with Yashura, a shared understanding passing between them. The wild boar, though slowed and frustrated, still posed a formidable threat. An tightened her grip on her finely crafted blade, the anticipation of the impending clash coursing through her.

Yashura's comment about the purpose of such missions lingered in the air, a dark reflection on the nature of their training. An, however, remained focused on the task at hand. The boar, despite being crippled, demanded their attention.

An nodded in response to Yashura's directive, ready to create the distraction needed for her teammate's plan. She swiftly moved to the opposite side of the boar, her eyes never leaving the creature. With a twirl of her blade, she unleashed a barrage of kunais, aiming to divert the boar's attention away from Yashura.

The boar, momentarily distracted by the commotion, shifted its massive form towards An. It snorted, its massive tusks scraping against the ground, a mix of frustration and aggression evident in its eyes. An moved gracefully, her movements deliberate and agile, expertly avoiding the boar's charges. The kunais served their purpose, drawing the creature's focus as it struggled to decide which threat to prioritize.

'She's doing the hard work. Excellent.'

Partnering with someone willing to take the more dangerous part of the assignment was always good in Yashura's book. However, it was her own role that was going to put an end to this exhausting exercise. Keeping herself in the boar's blindspot, the girl aimed carefully. Before swinging and releasing a single kunai that she prepared earlier, just as the creature turned its head towards An, to face her, exposing his side, and his neck.

The kunai struck true and almost disappeared inside, embedding itself to the hilt in the meaty throat. It was not the kunai that was going to deal the killing blow, though, but rather what was attached to it. 

"Make distance now, An. You have three seconds."

Once those three seconds have passed, and once An has gone out of the blast range, Yashura made a handseal that triggered all five explosive tags to detonate. At this proximity, the explosion tore into the creature's neck, obliterating it and its spine, and sending the bloody head of the boar twirling through the air, burning and smoking. It landed on the ground, leaving a mark in the mud, and rolled towards An's feet, where it finally stopped. The rest of the body, headless, made a few guideless steps forward, before collapsing onto its side. 

"It is done, I think." - Yashura said, approaching An, having a fond smile on her face as she looked at the girl. "You did very well! Very good job~" - she praised the fellow genin, bringing one hand forward, tentatively. If allowed, she would give An a reward for her selfless diligence.

An felt a mix of relief and accomplishment as the explosive finale echoed through the clearing. The boar, once a menacing threat, now lay headless and defeated. Yashura's praise was a welcome acknowledgment of her efforts, and the fond smile on her teammate's face added a touch of warmth to the intense atmosphere that still lingered.

"Thanks," An responded with a genuine smile, her adrenaline still pumping from the successful mission. Yashura's headpat was unexpected but oddly comforting, a small gesture that solidified the camaraderie they had built during the challenging task. An appreciated the acknowledgment of her hard work, a validation of the risks she took to create the opening for Yashura's decisive strike, "You did great too! Your explosive tags were spot on," An remarked, a genuine smile breaking through the calm facade she usually wore, "We make a good team."

With the remnants of the boar scattered around them, An and Yashura efficiently cleaned up the aftermath of their successful mission. An wiped her blade clean on a patch of grass, her movements precise and practiced. Yashura, on the other hand, carefully collected her explosive tags, ensuring nothing was left behind that could give away their presence. Once satisfied that the area was clear, the duo exchanged a nod, silently acknowledging the completion of their task.

As they made their way back to Kirigakure, the village hidden in the mist, An couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. The weight of the successful mission lifted off her shoulders, replaced by a quiet satisfaction. Upon reaching the village gates, An suggested, "How about we stop by that new cafe near the market? A little celebration for a job well done? After we are done with the paperwork here and the mission report."

"Yes, yes we do." 

Yashura smiled, as she finished giving An her well-deserved headpats. 'Such an earnest child...' - Yashura thought to herself. 'Her clan must be taking good care of her.' - she added inside of her head. How fortunate it must be, to have a clan that cares. And doesn't try to poison you when you're three years old or something. The girl made a note of the girl. She was capable, and a sort that was not yet ruined by a clan's or the village's atrocious character. A rare breed indeed. One that might be useful in the future. 

The two collected their things, and took care of the roadkill. Yashura did bag the boar's head, though, finding a bag to carry it in, among the supplies she took for their little journey. It would serve as proof that they did indeed slay a fearsome beast. Maybe they would get extra credit for it. Or, at least, avoid having to prove that they actually did some work instead of just slacking somewhere, to Kirigakure's bureaucratic machine. Hearing An's proposition, Yashura smiled and nodded.

"I could go for caramel apples after a hike, mhm. Would you like one? My treat~"

If there was anything the Shouki didn't appear to be having any issue with, it was pocket money. After the paper work was completed, the two would visit the local food merchants, and procure many delicious treats that made Yashura's heart flutter with joy. Beneath that dignified facade, she was still a child, too.
