Back when they were in their restaurants, Ren had been discussing the shortage of academy teachers in Kirigakure, expressing his intention to volunteer. After some serious consideration, Shō decided to follow suit, taking on a part-time role despite his poor social skills, and his serious workloads; a shinobi, a researcher, an organisation council, a chef… and now as a teacher…
[break][break]
But recognising the importance of proper education for children, he decided to embrace the responsibility until a more qualified person could step in. Muttering, "plant the seed when they're young, so the tree of knowledge can grow with them" he entered the academy door.
[break][break]
On his way to the classroom, Shō pondered about the two kids he had saved with Sora-sensei a couple of months ago from pirates. Curious about their well-being, he planned to visit them after the lesson. But for now, he had to focus on his teaching duties.
[break][break]
Upon entering the classroom, he gently opened the door and tapped to signal his arrival. "Good morning, I am your new sensei, Gurē sensei." While introducing himself, he chalked his name on the blackboard. But then he remembered he might get confused with his cousin Gurē Ren who would also be teaching here. To prevent confusion, he added his family name.
[break][break]
「氏」: Gurē 「グレー」 「姓」: Reimei 「黎明」
[break][break]
"You can call me Reimei sensei too, if you prefer. Anyway, let's start the class. Today, we'll be delving into Advanced Genjutsu." Although Shō had practised diligently for days, he felt a slight panic and momentarily forgot the lesson contents. Quickly flipping through his notes, he continued, "Oh, yes. Today, all of you will be challenged to learn how to break out of genjutsu. But before we begin, does anyone have any questions?"

Another day of classes, another lecture about some kind of ninja stuff that they had to sit through. Tsugime enjoyed his studies for the most part and he could definitely feel himself getting stronger on a consistent basis what with all the crazy exercises his instructors were putting him through, so perhaps it was just today's topic that drew so little interest from the boy. During his time in the academy the young Yuki had gravitated towards the physical art of taijutsu because as he saw it his opponent would have a hard time using techniques if they were constantly being punched in the face. Because of that attention paid he really didn't care for genjutsu all that much, or better yet didn't really understand it. None of the stuff people saw was really happening to them, it was all tricks, but wouldn't it have been easier to just actually do that thing to them and deal some damage?

Either way, the class had been gathered to hear from someone who was supposedly pretty good at the stuff and hopefully whoever it was would make things at least a little interesting. A rap at the door would signal the arrival of their instructor for the day, a blue haired man who was from the same family as another teacher at the academy but this one's name was Reimei. After a momentary silence to flip through his notes the man stated that the goal of today's lesson was to have them break out of a genjutsu which sounded a little useful. He'd ask if there were any questions prompting Tsugime to raise his hand. "Gure-sensei, if we know we're in a genjutsu can't we just ignore it and continue fighting? It's not like they can really hurt us, right?" The boy would ask. Sure, knowing how to dispel an illusion was probably handy but if it was all fake then why waste the time and energy to do so?

The atmosphere was hushed, as it had been for the past decade. The students remained consistent in this area, hesitant to pose questions in front of the entire class for various reasons; some due to shyness, while others out of sheer laziness. As Shō prepared to commence the lesson, a sudden voice shattered the silence. "Oh?" Shō turned to address the student.
[break][break]
Upon hearing the question, he offered a smile. "Good question." Shō then, at a sudden, slammed his hand onto the desk, startling nearly everyone in the classroom. "Oh, I'm sorry. Ahem. You see, advanced genjutsu is a bit different..." Before he could conclude his explanation, a leopard abruptly burst into the classroom, creating chaos. Although not as sizable as a tiger or lion, its speed posed a significant threat, particularly to unarmed children.
[break][break]
Before anyone could react, the leopard turned towards Tsugime and, in an instant, lunged at him. Leopards were known for their swiftness, but this creature surpassed all expectations, moving at what seemed like the speed of sound. Yet, before its sharp claws could reach the boy, it vanished. Whatever the kid responded, if any, were left hanging in the air. "?!?", the revelation left everyone stunned for a moment, taking a few seconds to realise that the sensei was now positioned behind Tsugime, holding the chalk over his back.
[break][break]
"Genjutsu can't harm you directly, but your enemy can take advantage of it to strike while you're trapped." Shō explained with a smile. "Especially when you're not even aware you're caught in one." He then patted the student and apologised for the shock. "I'm sorry, but I believe a single genjutsu is worth a thousand words." Returning to the front of the class, he resumed the lesson, not before commending the student for asking the insightful question.

Tsugime had not meant to anger the man with his question even if it did sound a little disrespectful and out of reflex he jumped in his seat after hearing the loud slam om his instructor's hand on the desk. Deeply crimson hues shifted immediately to the rooms entrance and widened in horror at seeing a leopard bust into the room and near instantly seemed to set its sights on the young Yuki and make a bee-line for him. Fear gripped the student as he couldn't even muster the ability to raise his hands to cover himself and there wasn't even enough time to think about his family, friends or what even was going on.

But just as Tsugime was about to watch the large cat end his young life it disappeared into thin air like some kind of magic trick. "Uh.." Was all the boy could utter as the sound of his instructors voice coming from behind caused him to quickly whip his head around in surprise. Hearing the man reveal that the 'animal attack' had really just been genjutsu was crazy and all at once it made sense why they were taking this class today. All it had taken were a couple moments for the Yuki to be thrown off guard and his attention pulled elsewhere and had this been a real fight everything would have been over in the blink of an eye.

"So umm.. how are we supposed to break out of something that seems so real, and how can we even recognize the fake stuff from real jutsu?" The boy asked once Gure-sensei had returned to the front of the classroom. He had been taught the basics about the general shinobi arts over the years but maybe if his teachers had explained it like this then he would have taken more interest. Maybe.

"Another excellent question!" Gurē exclaimed, strolling toward the front of the class. After brushing off the dust from his clothes, he began to explain, "That's precisely what I'm going to teach today. It's a mixture of the knowledge you've accumulated over the years - how to discern a genjutsu and how to effectively break free from it. It draws from the academic lessons in years 2 and 3, perhaps a bit from year 4, which is the final year."
[break][break]
Before delving into the main topics, as usual, he started with the theoretical foundation. "First and foremost, let's explore the nature of advanced genjutsu. It typically consists of..." The theoretical segment wasn't the most exciting part, but he hoped the initial stunt he made was able to pique the students' interest. "...And yes, the genjutsu I used earlier was a vision-trigger, zero hand-seal advanced genjutsu."
[break][break]
Pausing the note-taking on the whiteboard, he turned back to face the students. Raising his hand high in the air, a transparent flower began to bloom on his palm. It inflated like a water-filled balloon, reaching a beautiful form before he smacked it with both palms, shattering it. Instantly, a massive amount of water surged out, flooding the front of the classroom. However, a second later, it vanished, leaving no trace. "And that's a sound-based genjutsu." he exclaimed. "Oh, and you might have already realised it; both the genjutsu I displayed were short-term types. Short-term and long-term each have their merits. Regardless, when used correctly, they can be deadly, so please don't underestimate them at all."
[break][break]
After the explanation, he smoothly transitioned to the next chapter of his lesson. "Now, back to the golden question: how do we break free from something that appears so real? Well, first, we must identify that we're ensnared in a genjutsu. But then again, how do we do that when it feels so authentic?" The part-time teacher deliberately paused, waiting to see if anyone would volunteer an answer. "There's no right or wrong answer, so feel free to participate and let's make this a two-way conversation." Shō said with a smile.

With his mind still buzzing from Sho's demonstration Tsugime focused himself best he could to hear the answer to the question he posed, his interest now completely piqued but mainly on how to spot and dispel genjutsu and not really on using them himself. The very basics Tsugime remembered from classes he had already taken but thinking back to those days none of his teachers had made things as interactive yet the knowledge had been gleaned none the less. The instructor would begin with the theory and nature of advanced genjutsu which --had he not pulled the class' attention beforehand-- would have surely put some of them to sleep.

Soon enough there was another demonstration, Tsugime's eyes glued to his teacher as the man made a transparent flower appear and begin expanding. Brows raised in confusion before a loud clap burst the flower bringing forth a deluge of water that began to flood the front of the room though after a few moments it disappeared. Apparently that one was sound based, whereas the fake leopard was visual based in nature. Interesting. An action that basic in nature being the only catalyst was crazy to think about which definitely made it harder to tell when one was being cast. But outside of the trigger styles Sho had also mentioned there being both short and long term genjutsu which was a whole new wrinkle into all of this; the Yuki would make a mental note to ask more about that if they had time later.

Tsugime's mind raced with different partial answers to the teacher's question about how they even realize they were in a genjutsu if it felt so real, and though the man said there wasn't a wrong answer the boy was having a hell of a time coming up with one that sounded right. "Um, I guess looking out for any discrepancies in the area? I know when I was training the Hidden Cloak Technique an easy tell was noticing any issues with the sheet not blending exactly with the surroundings." It was his best guess but probably still off the mark.

The blue-haired Gurē nodded in delight upon hearing an answer from the same boy. Just as he was about to respond, more students joined in, sharing their thoughts. It seemed all they needed was some gentle push and nudge. "Good try, everyone!" he commended, then he waved his hand for everyone to sit back down.
[break][break]
Once everyone settled down, he started his explanation, "Every genjutsu is different and unique, so not every answer can be applied in the same scenario. Hence, that's why I say there is no definite right answer." He then turned to Tsugime, and continued, "But if there's one universal thing that will help you, it's always being alert and sceptical." as he finished it, he nodded at Tsugime for providing a fairly accurate response.
[break][break]
While the students were digesting what he said, he then suddenly clapped his hand, then paused for a moment before continuing. "Did you guys notice that?" he asked with a smirk, observing his students' confusion. As they remained puzzled, the teacher explained, "That is actually a hand seal. It might look like I am trying to grab your attention as a teacher, but I am just using it as a decoy." He emphasised the point by slamming his hand on the table and spouting some random phrases. Facing the even more confused students, he clarified, "Some genjutsu doesn’t require hand seals; all they need is just a phrase or an action. They might be harmless as a genjutsu individually, but remember, all it takes to kill you is just a split second of losing attention."
[break][break]
Drawing closer to the students, he elaborated, "But, of course, it's easier said than done. Some specialists would even camouflage their attempts with something else." It was precisely what Shō, as a genjutsu specialist, would do to make his attempts appear more natural. He might feign anger, slamming his hand to the ground to trigger the sight requirement, or simulate performing false hand seals while reciting the triggering chant.
[break][break]
"Fret not. It's not a death sentence to be unaware of being trapped in a genjutsu in the first second. But you have to discern that it is a genjutsu before the opponent has the chance to hurt you." What Shō said was true. Ensnared in a genjutsu wasn’t what killed people, but remaining unaware and trapped until harmed by your opponent. Certainly, the pain inflicted on the person would break the genjutsu, but they would most likely be dead by that point.
[break][break]
"And in order to do that, always stay alert to your surroundings." As Tsugime suggested, genjutsu wasn't a flawless manipulation technique. In fact, creating a convincing illusion, let alone maintaining realism in the surroundings, would be extremely challenging. So, by paying attention, one would observe numerous anomalies that shouldn’t exist or simply don't make sense.
[break][break]
"Alright, it's quiz time. If you reconsider the fake leopard genjutsu, can you identify the aspects that could reveal it as a genjutsu?" Shō patiently awaited a response, confident it shouldn’t be too challenging given there were many deliberate mistakes, along with some unintentional flaws, like the leopard's implausible speed and stripe patterns.

He was on the right path with being wary about one's surroundings though it seemed like being suspicious of everything all the time would make him paranoid after a while, perhaps there was a way to look for specific tells to avoid such a scenario. A clap then a pause, afterwards the Gure explaining that the somewhat out of place but otherwise normal action had in fact been a hand seal! Something as simple as that? No way! Even the most basic ones had that look where you knew it was one, but even just clapping was enough to trigger a genjutsu?

Then, to make matters 'worse' the teacher explained that some illusions didn't even need hand seals to activate! The Yuki took a moment to wonder if maybe studying genjutsu was something he should have been doing all along because if he could trap opponents in an illusion then it would be a whole lot easier to hit them with his punches and kicks. It seemed that the name of the game was trickery and deception when it came to using genjutsu, or in the students case being able to see through it quickly enough to know they were in one.

Sho would utter the magic words that no student wanted to ever hear 'quiz time' causing an audible almost sentient groan to emit from the class. Tsugime had thought they'd just get a lecture and a couple demonstrations then everyone would go their merry way, but no, they had to take a test. They were to point out what flaws were in the fake leopard attack their teacher had demonstrated earlier and truth be told the boy had been so stunned that he couldn't remember many details. He would put a hand to his chin in contemplation as he thought back to the scenario. His teacher had slammed his hand on the desk, that was the trigger, but the creature didn't appear in the room but came in from outside which seemed a bit odd; Tsugime knew next to nothing about summoning so maybe that was something you could do? Other than that maybe just how fast it was? They were supposed to be able to run really fast but it had gotten from the door to in front of his face almost instantly.

"I think either the fact that the leopard came through the door and didn't appear where you slammed your hand or that it was moving way too fast." The boy answered. He had surely missed other tells but considering how fast he closed his eyes there was no way he would have seen them.

"Indeed, well done." Shō acknowledged, praising the students for their keen observations. "Maintain a healthy dose of scepticism towards anything that appears unusual. That's my advice to all of you." As he concluded his statement, the bell rang once, indicating that the lesson's time was drawing to a close. The three-ring bell would signify the end. Releasing a sigh of relief, he decided it was time to wrap up the lesson.
[break][break]
However, it was easier said than done. "What should I be concluding…" Upon some thought and reflection, he recognised that there was one more valuable piece of information he could share, albeit it might be considered advanced for their current level. There existed a much more reliable method to identify genjutsu, but it was a high-ranking technique that might be beyond their current reach. This technique was… "The Genjutsu Intolerance Seal, a straightforward seal that could inform the individual of being under a genjutsu." Shō explained.
[break][break]
"This seal, when placed on someone, including yourself, would induce a moderate shock of pain when the wielder is trapped in a genjutsu." Shō then explained that pain could effectively dispel a genjutsu, contingent on the pain level, the genjutsu's rank, and the victim's proficiency. It was something that they had learned during the class, or maybe not, since it was a practical lesson in their final year.
[break][break]
When it came to his final advice, he strongly recommended that the students consider training in this after graduation, irrespective of their specialisation. "That's it. Thank you for your attention. Are there any questions from all of you?" Shō added, before patiently ticking the attendance of the students while waiting for questions, if there were any.

Putting together what little visual information he had combined with today's teachings from Gure-sensei had given Tsugime enough to correctly answer the question, or at least point out a couple things as he was sure there was plenty of other stuff that went by his notice. Still, this lesson had turned out to be a whole lot more fun and informative than the Yuki initially thought it was and he hoped that future teachers would work to make their lectures as interesting as Sho did... hopefully without a fake animal attack.

Hearing the single ding from the bell was the signal that class was about to come to an end yet it wasn't quite over as their instructor still had one last lesson to give. He spoke about a more practical way to dispel genjutsu by way of something called a genjutsu intolerance seal. Pain seemed to be the name of the game for getting out of illusions and this jutsu would automatically jolt the users system. "Ooh, I definitely need to learn that." Tsugime mused to himself. It was good to know there were some counters out there for jutsu that could trap people so easily.

Sho would ask for any final questions from the class before everyone took their leave leading to the white haired student to raise his hand. "Oi, Gure-sensei, what's the strongest genjutsu you have?" He asked. Curiosity had gotten the better of the boy after seeing his instructor produce a fake leopard and almost fill up the classroom full of water, and while those were cool and all Tsugime had a feeling there was something even cooler the man knew.

"Indeed, everyone should learn it once they graduate. You might not need it all the time, but it's better to be safe than sorry." Shō emphasised, fully aware of the dangers and lethality of genjutsu. As he pointed out, a single slash to the neck was all it took to kill someone, and being trapped in an illusion significantly increased the odds of such a fate. Glancing at the students before him, he silently prayed for their safety. Hopefully, by the time he visited the cemetery again next year, there would be no additional
[break][break]
While tidying up the whiteboard and organising his belongings into his small backpack, the white-haired student raised his hand once more. However, it wasn't a typical student question. "Huh? My strongest genjutsu?" Shō was momentarily stunned, trying to recall his most potent genjutsu from his arsenal.
[break][break]
"Hmm..." The air became silent and tense as he grappled with the question. Eventually, he responded, "To be frank... I don't really have a powerful genjutsu yet." He admitted awkwardly, acknowledging that it might be embarrassing to admit, but honesty was priority as a teacher. He'd rather be laughed at than teach the student to lie.
[break][break]
"But don’t even underestimate seemingly weak genjutsu. For example... Keizokuteki Enmu no Jutsu!" Shō shouted the name of the jutsu, immediately conjuring a strong mist that enveloped the classroom. While it was a low-ranked illusion, Shō had practised it extensively, gaining the ability to control not only the sight but also the smell and tactile sensations of the victims.
[break][break]
"Please stay calm. It's just an illusion." Under normal circumstances, he would have released his signature infectious spores while the victims were blinded by the mist, slowly incapacitating them from the inside. Of course, he wasn’t going to do it here, and then promptly cancelling the genjutsu to reassure the students.
[break][break]
Explaining his rationale to the student, Shō continued, "I have a few genjutsu in my arsenal, but most of them are low-ranked and designed for utility purposes." Shō preferred subtle and weak genjutsu, believing that they could be deadly if the enemy remained unaware of it. This approach offered more strategy and flexibility to the caster. "But that doesn't mean you have to mimic me. If you are going to learn genjtusu, just find the best one that fits your fighting style."
[break][break]
The bell once again rang, and this time it was the class ending bell, with a signature three rings. Noticing that the next teacher was waiting outside, Shō finally wrapped up the class. "As a part-time teacher, this might be the last time I teach here. However, if any of you encounter issues, feel free to reach out to me at Komore Shokudō."

The air in the classroom was thick with anticipation. Surely the man was only taking so long to answer because he had so many jutsu to pick from and Tsugime could hardly wait to hear about what mind melting illusions the man had learned over the years. Granted, the guy didn't look super old so there was a chance he was still learning the super duper cool stuff but at the very least he had to have at least a couple genjutsu that were powerful.

Alas, Sho would state that he didn't have any that fit the criteria causing an audible groan to come from the class. The man would instead demonstrate another technique that caused the room to fill with fog and even though Tsugime felt confident that it was fake his vision being obscured and the feeling of water vapor on his skin sure made it feel real. After a few moments his instructor would end the technique before stating that most of the genjutsu he used were low ranking and more so for utility purposes. Well that seemed boring. Still, the ones he had demonstrated during the class today had done well to capture Tsugime's attention and showcase the usefulness of even lower ranking techniques so there was definitely truth to the mans words.

A third bell would ring signaling the end of the class and with it another lesson learned. The Yuki was definitely more interested in genjutsu after today --perhaps not enough to really study it-- but he'd make sure to be more vigilant when it came to paying attention to his surroundings to lower the chances of him being caught in one.
