Despite his nonchalant, borderline lazy, behavior while off duty and incredibly pale skin, Niko is pretty easy to peg as some sort of shinobi when he’s out and about the streets of Amegakure. Not only does he have a slightly above average stature, standing at around 6’ tall, he also has an incredibly lean and athletic body. In addition to his physique that has been chiseled to perfection through training, Niko has also been graced with a very conventionally attractive face: physically, Niko has practically won the genetics jackpot.
His hair is jet black and often untidy, giving him a wild and untamed appearance. It's marked with cowlicks and messy irregular bangs that tend to fall in a disorganized manner, occasionally covering his eyes. These unpredictable bangs can sometimes obscure his eyes, which are a strikingly cold blue. When he's serious, these eyes hold an intimidating and focused gaze, but most of the time, his face wears a tired and relaxed expression that makes him much more approachable.
One of the big things that stands out is the fact that most of Niko's clothing is made from his solidified black fog, which is almost abyssal looking, like one is staring into eternal darkness that doesn’t seem to catch the light. This fog takes the shape of a long-sleeved, hooded jacket, with the sleeves partially rolled up his forearms. The jacket itself is designed in a loose, flowing style, gracefully extending down to his knees. Its open front flutters with his movements and revealing glimpses of the attire beneath. Nestled under this spectral jacket, he sports a plain, unadorned white t-shirt, which is mainly there just in case he has to disassemble the jacket as fuel for a jutsu. This starkly simple garment contrasts sharply with the dark, complex nature of his jacket because it’s the only piece of actual clothing that’s visible.
In terms of lower wear, Niko favors black pants made from the same fog as his jacket that are loose and comfortable. These pants enhance his agility and freedom of movement, crucial for his endeavors, because unlike cloth it’s impossible to tear these pants by simply moving around. His footwear is as unconventional as the rest of his attire. This footwear is an innovative amalgamation of combat boots and sneakers, offering a unique balance of protection and flexibility. They are designed to safeguard his ankles while also ensuring he can move with utmost speed and agility. This hybrid design of his shoes serves as a perfect footwear that has been formed through trial and error.
PERSONALITY NINDO: Work smarter, not harder.
Niko is a complex individual who often exudes laziness and a laid-back demeanor, and this laziness is paramount in the fact that he practically never fixes his hair. His default state is one of ease and nonchalance, preferring to take life at a leisurely pace. Despite this, he carries a unique burden due to his clan's legacy of being highly skilled assassins. Over the years he has learned to compartmentalize his personality, and when a mission comes up that requires him to kill, he can flip a switch and become absolutely ruthless, as if the normal laid back and casual demeanor is snuffed from existence and replaced with that of a trained killer. On less serious missions however, he often spends his time yawning and giving the bare minimum effort.
While Niko doesn't derive pleasure from taking lives, he possesses the remarkable ability to transform into a cold and calculated operative when the situation demands it. He can swiftly switch from his relaxed attitude to a focused and ruthless attitude at the drop of a hat, showing no hesitation in completing his objectives. It's a talent he's honed under the weight of his clan's expectations, making him a formidable force when the need arises.
Outside of missions, Niko's friends and allies sometimes find it hard to cope with the fact that it almost feels like he’s giving zero effort on the day to day. He's known for his dry humor, nonchalant attitude, and preferring to save energy when speaking instead of going on some massive soliloquy. The only time he tends to speak up more than usual is when a plan of action sounds stupid to him, and this tendency is a large part of what has allowed him to rise through the ranks. Behind that hard-to-read expressionless and lazy stare that he often has, his opinions during mission debriefings has led many shinobi to realize there’s a good head on his shoulders.
As almost a byproduct of his lazy and low-energy demeanor, Niko is capable of remaining relatively composed and unflustered in high-stress situations, allowing him to make rational decisions even when the odds are against him, and while he prefers to save energy he’s more than capable of realizing when something needs more than the bare minimum effort: whether or not he gives that effort depends entirely on how important the task is in his eyes.
Despite his frequent appearance of disinterest, Niko holds deep regard for the bonds he shares with his team and those close to him. He exhibits a fierce protective instinct towards his allies, and when the mission calls for it, he willingly embarks on great lengths to guarantee their safety. It's not uncommon for Niko to shoulder additional risks and responsibilities, going above and beyond to provide crucial support and cover for his comrades, all of which solidify his role as a reliable and dedicated member of the team.
HISTORY Unlike most Sairin, who are typically born into households of cold and unloving assassins and shinobi, Niko's upbringing was unique. Born to a loving mother named Yumi and a father named Naoki, his early childhood was far from the typical experience of a young Sairin. Before entering the Academy, Niko's life resembled that of an ordinary child, albeit an unbelievably lazy one. Yumi had retired from her own shinobi career, and Naoki worked as a simple gate guard. Given their backgrounds, they left the choice of entering the Academy entirely up to Niko.
Initially, Niko had no real inclination to become a shinobi. He was content with the idea of leading a civilian life, devoid of the challenges and responsibilities that often came with the path of a shinobi. However, as he observed the world around him and heard about conflicts such as the Kirigakure civil war, a sense of duty began to stir within him that originated from a carnal desire to be able to protect himself and his family.
Motivated by a growing desire to contribute to the safety and prosperity of his family, Niko made the pivotal decision to join the Academy at the age of 8 years old. While his lazy nature remained an inherent part of his personality, the prospect of becoming a shinobi became a meaningful goal. His Academy years were marked by initial struggles to adapt to the rigorous training and discipline required of a shinobi-in-training. Still, Niko's unique source of determination allowed him to grow rather quickly.
Due to getting into chakra training and development late, Niko struggled with things like ninjutsu, genjutsu, and fuinjutsu and was much more naturally talented when it came to Bukijutsu. Over the years he managed to overcome his shortcomings, and he gradually developed into a competent and resourceful young shinobi. Niko's unique blend of laziness and latent talent allowed him to devise inventive strategies and approaches to missions. His ability to remain composed under pressure, a trait stemming from his innate laziness, also made him a valuable asset during training exercises.
While most Sairin learned their Hijutsu by stealing it from another clan member, Niko learned the basics of the Yamiji no Jutsu directly from his mother. She didn’t have much to teach in the way of complex techniques since she quit being a shinobi as a genin, but with the basics Niko was able to begin developing his own black fog techniques. Just after he learned the hijutsu at the surprisingly ripe age of 12, Niko successfully graduated from the Academy and prepared to embark on his journey as a shinobi.
It was around this time that Amegakure began fielding shinobi to the highest bidder, luckily for Niko none of the villages were all that interested in an unseasoned genin. During his initial years as a Genin, Niko was assigned missions that ranged from catching stray cats to patrolling the village's borders. These tasks, although seemingly mundane, allowed him to gain invaluable experience in teamwork, strategy, and combat. Despite his inherent laziness, Niko’s combat sense and ability to remain cool in tough situations were exceptional according to the Jounin that had been assigned to his team.
Niko also dedicated a considerable amount of time to personal training. He worked on refining his speed, strength, and overall combat techniques. His unique ability to remain composed under pressure served him well during sparring sessions and training exercises. While he didn't possess the same level of ninjutsu prowess as some of his peers, his resourcefulness and quick thinking allowed him to keep up with a sword.
When the opportunity to take the Chuunin Exam arose after three and a half years of diligent training and missions, Niko seized it eagerly. However, his first attempt at the Chuunin Exam proved challenging. The rigorous tests and formidable opponents pushed him to his limits, and he fell short of the required criteria to advance to the rank of Chuunin.
Undeterred by this setback, Niko saw the failure as a valuable learning experience. He continued to train, both physically and mentally, absorbing the lessons from his initial Chuunin Exam attempt. With renewed determination and a better understanding of his strengths and weaknesses, he decided to make a second attempt at the Chuunin Exam.
On his second try, Niko's growth was evident; seeing the exams once had prepared him for the second exam. He faced the challenges of the Chuunin Exam with newfound confidence, demonstrating improved combat skills, strategic thinking, and adaptability. The first stage of the exam required more than just combat prowess, so he leaned on his teammates to help him get through that first stage, but the last two stages allowed him to show off his combat abilities. This time, he successfully passed the Chuunin Exam, earning the coveted rank and the respect of his fellow shinobi.
During his first two years as a Chuunin in Amegakure, Niko faced a series of challenging missions that pushed him to his limits. These missions ranged from escorting high-ranking officials to engaging in covert operations deep within enemy territory, something that wasn’t particularly his expertise. His skills continued to develop, and he earned a reputation among his peers as a resourceful and dependable shinobi.
However, it was a particular mission during his second year as a Chuunin that would leave a lasting mark on Niko's career. His squad, led by a seasoned Jounin, was tasked with infiltrating a rival village's stronghold to gather crucial information. The mission was deemed highly dangerous, but Niko's determination and trust in his team members drove him forward.
During the infiltration, things took a disastrous turn. Information had leaked at some point during the process of Amegakure receiving the mission, and the squad was ambushed by enemy forces, and a fierce battle ensued. Despite their best efforts, the team was overwhelmed, and one by one, its members fell in combat. In the end, only Niko and their team leader managed to survive.
However, Niko's survival came at a great cost. He had received a massive wound, a deep and life-threatening, deep gash between his neck and shoulder, during the skirmish. His leader helped carry him over the border before the two of them collapsed, with Niko being unable to go any further. The injury left him in critical condition, and it was only through sheer luck and the immediate medical attention of his team leader that he managed to cling to life.
Despite the challenges and the long road to recovery, once he made it to the hospital within Amegakure, Niko managed to recover rather quickly in the grand scheme of things due to the location of the gash. His near-death experience left him with a bit of survivors’ guilt, and a deep disdain for the fact that he was unable to help the rest of his squad escape.
News of Niko's miraculous survival and how he handled himself during the ambush reached the village's higher-ups. Recognizing his exceptional combat prowess and capabilities with his sword, he was promoted to the rank of Special Jounin, much to his own surprise. Niko, however, carried the weight of self-doubt, feeling as though he did not yet deserve such a title.
As a fresh Special Jounin, Niko is currently coming to terms with the internal struggle of living up to the expectations of the rank, and maybe as a shinobi in general. Due to his reservations, he made a request to be put in charge of genin instead of staying in his operations team.

Yamiji no Jutsu
As one of the luckier members of the Sairin clan, Niko was graced with a mother that was willing to teach him the basics of the clan’s secret Dark Road techniques known as the Yamiji no Jutsu. These techniques allow him to create and control black fog made out of his raw chakra. This unique fog starts as a pitch black mist that has the remarkable capability to change its state and shape. With the aid of a little bit of chakra, this black fog can transform into either a liquid or a solid substance and back again.
Due to the time-consuming nature of generating large quantities of this fog, Niko has adopted the same practical approach of utilizing seals to store black fog for combat. Niko's mediocre talent with Yamiji no Jutsu directly influences the amount of black fog that he can keep within the simple diamond seals located on his left and right palm, with each seal containing a sufficient amount of black fog to power a single low cost jutsu or they can be combined to utilize one medium cost jutsu.
Demonic Speed
Niko’s body has always naturally adapted quickly, so he has spent most of his shinobi career training to enhance important physical traits. As a result of this training, Niko has become capable of moving at speeds that seem almost antithetical to his sluggish and lazy nature. Keeping up with his movements is impossible for a vast percentage of shinobi, usually requiring some combination of speed, reflexes, or special ability to track his movements in order to go toe to toe with him when he's maneuvering and attacking at his maximum speed.
Inhuman Reflexes
To complement his extraordinary speed, Niko has committed a similar amount of time to refining his reflexes. His diligent training has elevated his reflexes to an extraordinary level, surpassing even the innate reflexive reactions of most shinobi. As a result, his responses appear almost prescient when compared to the slower reactions of fellow shinobi. When combined with his remarkable speed, this synergy leaves Niko capable of evading all but the swiftest of attacks with remarkable ease.
Demonic Strength
Just like with his speed, Niko’s body has always had a natural strength to it; and, as he has aged, he has shaped this strength into a super powerful tool over the years, with a lot of his training being dedicated to strengthening his muscles. His strength is near the pinnacle of what the human body is capable of, allowing him to wield crazy heavy weapons with ease and to clash with enemies who have much larger bodies without losing so much as an inch. Niko isn’t tiny by any means, but his level of strength can often be baffling to most people. This strength allows him to cut through the steel of standard weapons without much effort if they aren’t being enhanced with chakra..
