After the Raikage’s speech, a massive man of the Fujiyama clan would step forward to take over the nitty-gritty of moving the days’ events along: some of the genin from group C would recognize him as the "trapped” man who had lain in the road beneath his toppled cart the day prior. He cleared his throat, and with a booming voice he announced the first of the day’s fights: "First up! Nanashi Yuki of Iwagakure! Versus! Hyuuga Raika of Konohagakure!” Yuki had exchanged her scroll for a single ration pill, which had been given to her privately to tuck away and use whenever she saw fit. There were two vivid yellow stripes painted onto the hard-packed dirt ground of the arena about twenty meters apart: designated starting zones for each of the genin to stand on. They would be instructed to bow, and then the countdown for the round to start would begin. "Three… …two… …one… Begin!” NANASHI YUKI VS. HYUUGA RAIKA

Raika is a bit nervous about the fight, since it's a one-on-one, there's nobody that she can rely on for back-up if things go south quickly for her in combat. She's hoping she'll be able to get in close before there's any chance of long-range attacks, but she's not entirely sure what to expect. It wasn't like Iwagakure and Konoha were on particularly friendly terms with one another, so this girl had the potential to do anything. Regardless, the Hyuuga gives the Iwa kunoichi a proper bow. They were named... Yuki? A somewhat odd name for a ninja in a hot and arid location like Iwagakure. At least they were fighting in the famous Thunderdome. She wondered if it bodes well that her first opponent was someone so young. Raika felt sure she was almost a decade older than this Yuki girl, which made her worried. Is it really a victory if she beats up a little kid?

She's still wearing her dark gray coveralls for now, and although she did sleep all night with the Hung Gar rings off her wrists and ankles, she was wearing them once more, underneath her sleeves. The Konoha headband is worn on her forehead for once, wanting to show her allegiance plainly. Her straight black hair is mostly tied back in a ponytail, with one strand framing the right side of her face, and at 6'3", she might look like a giant of a woman to most. Her weapon pouch is still on her right thigh, restocked now with the kunai she'd used in the previous round.

"Don't worry! I'm going to avoid injuring you if I can, all right?"

She hoped she came off as friendly and not as though she's patronizing her younger opponent. Of course, she might take it just that way, in which case it might not go so well, politically. Oh well, she'd already said it, and now she'd have to make good on her promise regardless of what Yuki throws at her. Raika takes a deep breath and activates her Byakugan, giving her a great view of the area all around her. At the very least, she wouldn't be taken by surprise from chakra attacks. She takes a ready stance, her eyes having gone from purple to an ivory white, and the sides of her face are now covered in veins, showing the increased blood flow to her eyes as she drops down to a ready combat stance for the Jyuuken. She was ready in an instant.

In contrast to Raika, Yuki- with all the invincible confidence of the young- strides into the arena with a level of irrepressible swagger, absolutely alive for the audience in an arena such as this! She's decked out in the complimentary windbreaker in the Yanki clan regalia, and makes a great show of whipping it off- though when she dramatically throws it aside, it's straight to one of the aides near the entrance from her locker area, ensuring it gets snagged and kept safe for after the fight.

As she approached her line, she did a touch of grandstanding for the crowd- specifically the Iwagakure segment of the cheering onlookers. As it happened, her flavor of braggadoccio seemed absent any sort of disrespect or disregard for her opponent. She popped the pill of condensed nutrients and stimulating herbs into her mouth and crunched it to pieces, chewing it as she took her spot on her yellow line.

As directed, she bowed respectfully, and straightened, her kit a bit unusual. What looked like a wooden sword was strapped to her hip; a brace of very strangely curved and slender blades slid down her chest on a strap; and opposite her sword, a heavy pouch sat with... who know what inside.

"Aw, that's awful sweet'a ya, Hyuga-san!" At the very least, Yuki didn't seem to take it as disrespect. "Tell ya what- in th'spirit'a fairness, I'll see if I can do th'same! Let's do our best-" Yuki brought her hands together, one fist against the other palm as she bowed her head faintly. "-cuz I don't think either'a our compatriots gonna be too happy if they think we went easy."

The fight was called to start- and Yuki didn't move a muscle. She breathed in, deep, slow, focusing- and Raika was rapidly given reason to believe she had made a mistake in not engaging offensively immediately.

With Raika's Byakugan active, she was privy to a sight that few, if any, of the observing audience were. As Yuki focused, the vital earth, the swirling air, everything all around them began to give up trickles and wisps of a strange sort of chakra, entirely natural and without the sort of shaped, constricted nature of human chakra. Even as she watched, the chakra flowed into Yuki's body and mingled, mixing and balancing with her own as her chakra network bolstered beyond its normal capacity, the already mostly replenished stores densely supplemented with this natural chakra now pumping through her chakra network. And as she drew the chakra in, her body began to change.

Bones shifted as her face pushed outwards into a simian muzzle; fur sprouted from previously unblemished skin; muscles tightened and bulked outwards as the intake of Senjutsu chakra pushed Yuki's body into her imperfect transformation before Raika's very eyes!

Raika wonders for a moment after watching Yuki walk in and play to the crowd if her own entrance had been a bit too plain, but she wasn't really here to put on a show or anything. She was just here to get the exam completed, and she wants to make sure she goes on to the next series of fights without losing out on too much of her own chakra. Although she'd been able to conserve quite a bit of chakra and had regained plenty during the night, even if she had spent it in a tent and had only a little time to clean herself off in the locker room before the fight. She felt refreshed almost back up to full, in fact, and so she'd decided that she would save her own boon for the final portion of the exams.

As Yuki's body begins its transformation, Raika's eyebrows furrow in confusion. Despite having the Byakugan active, there doesn't seem to be much movement of her opponent's chakra through her tenketsu points, so she's not sure what exactly is powering this strange alteration to her opponent's appearance, but she knows she doesn't like it much. She decides suddenly that it's better for her to keep Yuki from doing much else, because she can at least see that the bones and musculature are shifting, and making her stronger than before, and she simply cannot allow that to continue. An interruption is required.

Wasting no more time, she rushes in for a close-range assault on the smaller girl, reaching into her weapon pouch as she moves in order to hastily throw a single kunai, aiming for it to go right past Yuki's ear. It might even be close enough to nick the skin, but it's only a distraction to try and throw Yuki off; Raika follows it up with a great leaping kick aimed at the shorter ape-like girl's gut, her leg sparking with Raiton chakra while she tries to slam her foot right into Yuki's solar plexus, a strike that would normally leave most enemies breathless afterwards, if it wasn't successfully stopped.

Maybe in later reflection- or just after seeing Yuki in later fights- Raika would gather that Yuki was, quite simply, a showman. She very much enjoyed the spotlight, and had fun playing into hyping everyone else up. If she was more familiar with Iwagakurian culture, she might have even recognized the echoes of the Okada style dramatic performance, rooted in their family business of wrestling entertainment!

Yuki's meditative focus proves a mild boon in the specific circumstances presented; the nick to her ear draws her out of her Senjutsu collection, but her own focus on the chakra manipulation prevents her from fully noticing the kunai in its role as a distraction. As she refocuses, her only point of attention is Raika, whose technique just catapulted her into the air, rushing towards Yuki's midsection!

The petite ape of a girl shows off exactly what her odd transformation has done for her! As Raika leaves the ground, Yuki EXPLODES into motion, twisting to the side to evade the attack with DRAMATICALLY increased speed, significantly outpacing even the well-trained Taijutsu artist's natural swiftness on approach! As she does, the wooden sword on her side seems to vanish as the same rotating motion allows Yuki to scythe the blunted weapon in towards her airborn opponent's center of gravity, combining her own drastically superior speed with the technique's own ferocious swiftness to try to capitalize on her opponent being locked into her midair trajectory!

Regardless of whether the blow landed, Yuki immediately disengages, leveraging her speed to create distance rapidly. As she moves away, she yanks a trio of shuriken from one of her belt pouches and hurls them back towards Raika! Again, her Byakguan aids her, revealing the wires attached to the shuriken by virtue of the tiny amount of chakra suffusing them- though what the chakra is meant for isn't entirely clear.

Yuki uses Quick Rotation to dodge the kick, utilizing Cloud-Style Three Day's Moon Beheading to counterattack, using her speed advantage (SA + Sage Mode SA) to attempt to strike before Raika can get her feet back on the ground to defend herself properly!

Note: Yuki's strength is boosted for this strike as well due to Sage Mode, so while the blow is blunted- Yuki's sword is deliberately still locked in its wooden sheath- and unlikely to be lethal, it is still a strong technique with a boosted Buki Primary's strength backing it up.

Yuki then disengages and throws three wired shuriken back at Raika, the chakra in the wires sure to show up to her Byakugan, though the purpose not yet clear.

Now this fight was rapidly becoming more difficult for herself. Her opponent uses weapons, and her strange body is clearly giving her a different kind of advantage. Despite her own Taijutsu capability requiring her to close distance in order to effectively engage with her opponent, the range provided by her sword and her apparent skill with weaponry is going to make things far more difficult for Raika than previously expected. Her Byakugan is capable of catching sight of the incoming blow only because she has a clear view of nearly everything around her at once. Still, it's going to be difficult to get her body to move in such a way as to avoid being knocked out by the wooden weapon immediately.

Her Byakugan also recognizes that the sword is actually locked in its sheathe, which actually creates a problem for the Hyuuga; although she does have techniques she was mentored through by none other than Chisai herself, techniques that would be able to break apart steel weapons, the protection provided by the sheathe would likely mean she'd only be able to break the sheathe and not the blade inside; it would make the weapon more dangerous instead.

Raika at least reacts quickly enough to brace her palms, elbows, and shoulders to the sword's strike, blocking the wooden sheathe with her hands. While such a deflection might seem ridiculous at first, in such a situation with Raika airborne, she would actually be able to use the extreme force of such a swing to launch herself away from Yuki, dispersing the force of the blow into movement that just pushes her through the air instead.

The Hyuuga drops her legs quickly to catch her balance again right away, before a series of shuriken are thrown in her directly. She almost misses the shinobi wire attached to them, but she's aware that being at a distance is the last place she wants to be. With a quick single handseal, she floods her entire body with chakra for a moment as she holds the seal with her fingers, then launches herself forwards, at an angle to avoid running straight into the shuriken and instead try to get just a foot from Yuki, facing away from her as she drops the handseal and moves down to the Jyuuken stance this time, keeping a close watch on the Iwagakure kunoichi with her Byakugan.

Her arms were already tired from the deflection of the sword swing, but now she was ready to end it, even if she had to resort to the Jyuuken. Spinning her body rapidly, she disperses chakra from every last one of her tenketsu points, causing an eruption of chakra as she twists to create a rapidly expanding dome around herself, and giving Yuki as little room and time to react as she can manage as she uses the Revolving Heaven technique to create a great spinning dome.

Things took a sideways twist as Raika blipped out of view. Yuki had been actively- and accurately- predicting she'd utilize her Shunshin to close the gap, but she'd expected her to come straight at her, not flicker behind her. Already prepared to start moving, Yuki dashed to the side as she'd intended, briefly crossing past Raika's diagonal landing spot, and continued as fast as she could to try to escape melee range all over agai-

The explosive pressure wave of chakra smashed into Yuki, and she howled like the ape she was as she hurtled forwards, tumbling and rolling in an embarrassing forced somersalt set. She broke from it quickly, springing back to her feet facing Raika and skidding on simian feet that dug thick toes into the packed earth to slow her slide, grimacing back at the dome. As she slid, she yanked the tangled wires to at least reclaim the shuriken she might still find a use for, dropping the wires as they skidded back to her feet.

"Neat trick! But how long can ya keep it up, huh? How about it?! HYU-GAT WHAT IT TAKES?!"

Yuki whipped a few more shuriken into her hands, two in each, and hurled them towards Raika with all the power and speed her amplified form could manage. She could feel the Senjutsu leaking from her body, but it wasn't quite gone yet- and at the very least, she could either catch Raika as she ended the spin, or force her to waste more chakra extending it to protect herself!

Raika is, at this point, seemingly done with playing around; immediately after she manages to knock Yuki away with the Revolving Heaven, she ends her rotation and full-tilt sprints towards the Iwa shinobi, utilizing her Byakugan to keep track of her movements the entire time. She watches the wires get pulled on to return the shuriken to herself, though they clatter to the ground and she drops the wires connected to them, effectively leaving them grounded. Another two pairs of shuriken were in Yuki's hands, but the Hyuuga cared little about them in her mad dash towards the ape-like shinobi, giving up only enough of a dodge to them in order to avoid taking lethal damage as she uses as little deviation as possible, though the shuriken still leave painful red lines across her cheek, with the coverall jacket and her arms showing a little damage as well, though the thin armor does its job of protecting her most vital organs. But the distance is closing quickly as she sees those animal features disappearing from the other shinobi's body.

It was honestly a bit of a relief that the changes to her body weren't permanent, as she didn't know how long she could last against someone whose body had changed to become stronger in such a way, but from this point forwards, she was going to focus more intently on an unstoppable offense, rather than working so hard only to defend herself. Ignoring the pain caused by the shuriken she'd just been hit with, though she'd managed to turn them into glancing blows with a bit of maneuvering, she lifts her right hand, with her left in a prepared position at her waist, to aim a blow directly at Yuki's center line, aimed directly at her solar plexus, with an explosion of chakra to stun her diaphragm and drop her from the fight as soon and as painlessly as possible. Her left hand stays prepared to interrupt Yuki's right hand from reaching for her sword, though; she's not going to let this Iwa ninja take her by surprise again.

While any individual can try to jump from the path of an attack, those truly skilled at the art of evasion will find less obvious methods to avoid attacks. Dropping down to a split, flipping just over the area of attack, contorting their body into unusual angles and so on. This technique is effectively just a higher degree of training to use either the terrain or the blindspots of an attack to dodge in usual ways so that the user may either more readily escape or press their counter attack.

When the technique is used it usually temporarily paralyzes an opponent but the collateral damage is not on par with much more elaborated techniques.

The pressure was on.

Raika put her all into closing the distance with Yuki. The Iwa girl leveraged her own naturally intense speed to maintain that gap for a moment, bouncing backwards in quick leaps, each rapid hop off to one side or the other a bit, a natural move for someone smart enough not to subscribe to the classic folly of fleeing directly away from an unpredictable opponent.

Raika seemed to be catching up as Yuki used the time bought by her superior speed to bring her hands together- and as Raika slammed her chakra-infused palm strike forwards, Yuki disappears from what would be any normal person's range of vision.

Reappearing to Raika's right side, taking advantage of her extended arm for the palm strike, Yuki unleashes a wickedly fast strike only enhanced by her superior speed, aiming a brutal, sweeping blow with the sheathed blade aimed at Raika's midsection, aiming to smash her kidney and force Raika's body to shut down before she was forced to use any of her deadlier techniques to bring an end to their challenge!

Raika was at least more prepared this time; she'd seen this attack used once before, and her Byakugan was carefully keeping track of her opponent's movements. And this time, while she does lose track of her opponent for only a moment after she uses the single handseal, Raika had seen her body flood with chakra in preparation for a technique she was already well aware of, and she knows her opponent needs to get in close for her own techniques to deal damage. She doesn't even require a drastic change in her stance; the Eight Trigrams position isn't too different with one arm already extended and her knees slightly bent, it's only a moment for her to get into position to begin delivering blows.

"Gotcha!"

As soon as she sees Yuki's chakra again on her right side, she lets loose a burst of chakra from all of her tenketsu points at once; however, this time, instead of using the rotation technique, she uses a different one, a technique meant to stun in preparation of the more powerful Gentle Fist techniques.

Hakkesho Ranbu!

Even if Yuki managed to land the blow on her stomach, the expulsion of chakra from all around her body would serve to stun Yuki for long enough that Raika could follow up with several palm strikes to her own chakra points; should her technique be successful, she'd do just that, aiming to take out her opponent's tenketsu in her arms in order to block off enough of her chakra pathway to make handseals as well as her use of bukijutsu either difficult or impossible. The only thing Raika worried about now was whatever Yuki had used to turn herself into some sort of ape-like humanoid. She didn't think it used chakra, but if it did, it would certainly be hard to control with some of her tenketsu closed off.

For a moment- when she felt the wooden sheath slam into Raika's midsection- Yuki felt like she was finally making some progress. Raika had forced her to use more chakra than she would have liked on a fight, and she'd been doing her best to give Raika a chance to show her stuff, rather than running embarrassing circles around her and showering her with projectiles until she was too drained to stop them. For a moment, she felt like it hadn't been a mistake to meet her where she lived and fight her properly in close quarters.

And then Raika decided she didn't want Yuki to show what SHE could do anymore.

The blast of disorienting chakra wasn't entirely unlike the start of hitting the Stone Ceiling. The sense of stasis and loss wasn't as physical- it was like her nerves turned to stone for a moment rather than flesh. Yuki fought to balance her chakra and regain control, but before she could get her hands entirely back on the metaphorical wheel, Raika had already landed a couple blows on each of Yuki's arms. She didn't know exactly what she'd done, but she could feel the disruption as she forced herself to move, to hurl herself out of arm's reach.

She didn't let up on the retreat, either. Raika had shown herself willing and able to push herself to Shunshin to close the distance, but that technique was a strain- she couldn't do it forever, and for the moment, Yuki focused on defense- and on trying to force that foreign chakra out of her system so she could think straight again.

She was SEETHING.

It was all she could do right now to lock her fist around her sword. Her arms HURT- but that wasn't what made her angry. Everything Raika kept doing felt like it was designed to stop her from fighting. To stop her from showing what she could do. She would have understood her going for blows to end the fight, but whatever she'd done had instead left her on her feet but... it was harder. SO much harder. To push chakra into her arms. The other girl was peeling apart her ability to fight back, and to Yuki, the showman, who had- aside from an attempt to end the fight quickly so neither of them would end up exhausted or injured for the second round- gone out of her way to let Raika keep showing off what she could do?

It felt disrespectful. It felt cheap. And it made Yuki feel like even giving Raika a chance to fight fair in close quarters had been a mistake.

And even as she fought through the fog to get herself away from Raika, she wasn't sure if she was angrier at her- or herself.

Raika lets out a wordless grunt as the weapon hits her in the stomach, pushing the air out of her lungs and actually momentarily paralyzing her diaphragm, and she stays with her hands on her knees for a moment after she executes the stunning technique that had worked so well against the last real opponent she'd faced. She checks on her ribs, and one of them is broken and floating, and she absolutely cannot risk having it float for the rest of the fight and risk having it shift in position and jab into her lung. She still has another fight to go before this one, and her healing technique wasn't activated in time to avoid having a bone broken. She's actually going to need to commit herself to self-surgery before her next fight, and that's going to be very very painful.

She sighs in defeat, having used so much chakra only to have to effectively give up. But perhaps the proctors running the exam would give her the benefit of some points for knowing when she should back off and perhaps getting her opponent to such a state that she wouldn't be able to perform many more techniques, particularly of the Bukijutsu variety. She still had no idea what to make of that strange monkey-like transformation, but she'd have to live to look into what in the world it was, and in order to do that, she had to raise her right hand and say...

"I concede this fight. Congratulations, Yuki."

She waits for the fight to officially be called ended before she approaches Yuki again, though she's still bent over a bit; she has to keep her Byakugan active in order to keep her floating rib from stabbing herself, and she can tell that in this bent position, the rib is at least staying in place. Once she reaches the younger Genin, she uses her Byakugan to locate the few tenketsu she'd managed to close, and reopens them, allowing Yuki to regain full control of her chakra and her arms.

"Good luck in the finals, give 'em hell."

The pipsqueak Iwa brawler's mind was racing as she forced her arm to tighten her grip on her sword's hilt. Briefly, she considered unsheathing it- and dismissed the idea. Killing and maiming were easy. She wanted to prove she could manage all sorts of assignments. And her first stop to managing that was finding a way to-

"I concede this fight. Congratulations, Yuki."

As the fight was called, Yuki finally slowed to a stop and stood up straight, relaxing her death grip on her sword only once the proctors made it official. She breathed out, long and hard, and when she recognized Raika's trouble moving, she scampered over to close the distance and save her the trouble of moving.

She kept her voice low out of respect, not wanting to unfairly expose Raika's trick. "Holy fishsticks, Hyu-DO-gat what it takes. Most of what you did, I've never seen before, and like. I'm used to having weird chakra in my system," she murmured as her tenketsu were unlocked again. She was quiet for a long moment, then-

"You and Ataru-kun seem really cool.

I wish our villages got along as well as we do."

As Raika raised her hand and conceded the fight, the crowd erupted into a cacophony of passionate cheering and booing—partially because it was the first fight of the exams, and partially because of the tension present between Raika’s supporters and Yuki’s supports, the Konoha vs Iwa divide having been echoed and played out in many exams before. But the fight was concluded, and the announcer stepped forward to declare in a booming voice: "Nanashi Yuki wins!” Yuki was allowed to return back to the spectator stands with the rest of the genin, since none of the injuries she’d sustained were deemed in need of critical treatment; Raika, on the other hand, was taken aside by a pair of Kumogakure medics. Raika’s careful positioning of her body was good, and the medics praised her quick thinking as they cautiously helped her to the medical room. Treatment was swift—a floating rib was dangerous, and regardless of whether Raika wanted to continue to participate in the exams, leaving it untreated could have resulted in a punctured lung or worse. Once the medics received confirmation that Raika did, in fact, want to carry on to the team fights, they progressed with continuous uses of To Disregard Treatment, preventing Raika from feeling any pain as the medics cut into her ribcage, set, and mended the bone. It would take time—enough that Raika wouldn’t be able to spectate the second of the day’s fights, but the rib was fixed and the incision was healed in time for her to get back to the stands to watch the third fight, and every fight after.
