When the previous fight concluded, he cleared his throat to announce the seventh of the day's fights. "Next up! Let's hear it for our home-grown boy, folks: Jokyu Katsuo of Kumogakure! Versus! Shizu Amaya of Kirigakure!” There were two vivid yellow stripes painted onto the hard-packed dirt ground of the arena about twenty meters apart: designated starting zones for each of the genin to stand on. As Amaya positioned himself on the bright yellow line marking his starting point, the atmosphere in the amphitheatre was electric, charged with the collective anticipation of the spectators filling the stands. This sea of eyes, all fixed upon him and Katsuo, failed to unnerve him. Instead, his blood sang with the thrill. Facing Katsuo, a rival who had become an unexpected complexity, Amaya's desire to engage was undiminished. The memory of their unexpected kiss, a moment of passion that had caught him entirely off guard, lingered at the edge of his consciousness. It was an experience foreign to Amaya, yet undeniably pleasant. The duel left not room for hesitation or time to reflect on the odd emotions which had its grip on him. All of that had to be set aside. [break][break]

Upon receiving the signal, Amaya bowed, a gesture of respect and readiness. The countdown to commencement filled the air, a palpable tension that ended with the command to begin. Instantly, Amaya's hand moved to Hajimari, drawing the blade in a fluid motion that seemed almost second nature. With the sword's unsheathing, a dense black smog billowed from its hilt, swiftly threatening to envelop the arena in darkness. Reducing visibility to mere shadows, was precisely what Amaya sought. It obscured not only Katsuo's vision but also the cloud shinobi's pretty face, allowing Amaya to detach his emotions from the duel.[break][break]

Determined to seize the initiative, Amaya did not wait for Katsuo to act. He intended to disorient his opponent from the outset, he would invert Katsuo's perception of the world. The sharp sound of a whistle was all it took to cast the illusion.[break][break]

Navigating the expanding veil of smog with ease, Amaya moved stealthily, using the cover to approach Katsuo. As he advanced, the boundary between prey and brief lover began to blur. The hunt begins.

After a shrill whistle, the user will cast a Genjutsu over their opponent. After they hear the whistle, it will seem as if the world around them begins to spin. Everything turning upside down, making them almost unable to move without falling over. Leaving the opponent extremely disorientated.[break][break]

Kuromoya [Black Smog]: When Amaya activates the blade it will begin to billow out a thick black smog. This smog is only able to obscure vision with its thickness. It can be inhaled without being harmful and contains no special properties. Amaya can alter the speed at which the smog is emitted and can be used to create smaller wisps of smog for genjutsu. However, its main purpose is to darken a battlefield much like the hiding in mist technique. After one rotation after its activation, the smog will cover a twenty-metre radius around where it was activated. While the area is fully covered, anyone within has their field of vision reduced to five feet in any direction. This includes Ayama. While activated, the smog can resist being blown away from Fuuton jutsu, but they will create a temporary opening in the smog in which to see. Powerful Fuuton jutsu will be able to blow away the smog, causing Amaya to have to refill the area.[break][break]

The smog is contained in a special compartment in the hilt of the blade. It contains enough smog to last for a total of 20 rotations. Amaya can stop and resume, but after a total of 20 rotations the sword must be re-stocked with the smog.

It was time for the third round and to say Katsuo was a bit nervous was an understatement. He had placed poorly in the second round and didn't have much to show for it and even though the medical team said he was fine to use his arm like normal he was uncertain if he should. The fact he had almost forced the prosthetic out of him made him worried he could lose his arm in this exam too so he wasn't going to risk injuring himself that badly again. [break][break]

Yet despite wanting this he had a feeling he might have to when he found out who he would be facing in the combat rounds. The one whom he made an enemy out of in the previous round. He wouldn't be able to hide his barrier techs from him since he was one of the few who witnessed it, but what made this matchup even worse? It was like a repeat of the previous year and Katsuo once again found himself locking lips with one of his opponents. The only good thing about this one was it wasn't in combat, but rather the night prior when the two ended up sharing a tent. This time it was a bit more of a pleasant experience though than last year especially since he wasn't engaged like he was during those exams and it seemed to some degree from Katsuo's viewpoint the one whom he shared this experience with seemed to be ok with it. Granted Katsuo never got to pry about it as the two were both quick to turn to sleep to prepare for the next day, but the idea that maybe just maybe something could blossom from this did make him feel a bit excited.[break][break]

First things first though he needed to get through this battle and from how the boy acted in the second round they wouldn't show mercy. Standing upon the yellow line as instructed by the proctor Katsuo would ready himself against his opponent wondering how this battle would go. Returning the bow Amaya gave in respect Katsuo would pull out his weapon of choice. While Amaya borught his blade Katsuo took out his claws Katsuo's claws wouldn't have black smog seeping out of them like Amaya's blade did so it probably looked a bit underwhelming in comparison. Amaya would be the first to initiate battle though but instead of with their blade, they would use a genjutsu with a whistle as a trigger. While Katsuo did have the ability to dispel certain genjutsu he had a feeling this would be one he wouldn't be able to dispel so easily. So instead why not try and let his opponent waste his chakra? So while the world spun around him instead of moving which would probably cause him to fall over with how disorientated he was Katsuo grabbed into his inventory pulled out a smoke bomb and dropped it around himself to give him some cover. While under this cover though he would throw his makibishi around him creating a trap for Amaya's feet to step on if he got too close while using the cover of his smoke bomb to prepare a substitution jutsu just in case he needed to escape.[break][break]

As Hajimari unleashed its dense, black smog, the arena quickly succumbed to darkness. Within Amaya’s grasp, three bells were secured to his middle finger, nestled in his free palm. The moment they were released, their gentle jingle would reveal Katsuo’s position within the shroud and allow him to navigate the darkness with his eyes closed. Without ocular vision, even the slightest rustle became magnified in the silence. [break][break]

The distinct sound of a smoke bomb, amidst the enveloping smog, did not escape Amaya’s hearing. It served only to deepen the cover. Releasing the bells, Amaya’s mental image of the field sharpened, revealing Katsuo’s unchanged position—a grey stationary figure. Yet to move, perhaps by the disorientation of the genjutsu.

Maintaining a cautious distance, Amaya circled around Katsuo, the bells’ second drop confirming the scene remained unchanged, save for ten small, indistinct objects littered around the figure of Katsuo. These could be anything from simple makibishi to something as dangerous as miniature explosives. With little knowledge of Katsuo's capabilities, Amaya refrained a direct assault, until he could ascertain the nature of the objects.[break][break]

With precision, he launched two shurikens towards Katsuo’s silhouette, their dark forms blending seamlessly with the surrounding smog. Immediately after, Amaya retracted the bells, retreating silently to a previous position. Eyes closed, Amaya’s focus narrowed to the sounds of the arena. Every slight movement, every disturbance in the air became audible.

This is a passive technique which allows Amaya to see within his black smog. To use this technique he must have a reliable source of sound, for which he uses three small bells tied together. When he shakes the bells he receives a quick flash of his surroundings in his mind. This gives him a general idea of his surroundings, but he must shake the bell to get an updated image. The echolocation only provides him with shapes and distances, and he cannot make out details. This technique only works if Amaya can hear. Requires enhanced hearing SA.

The smog was getting worse by the second to the point where Katsuo wouldn't be able to see even if he wasn't already disorientated from the genjutsu. He knew he wasn't safe in his predicament especially considering a lot was going on against him in this fight to begin with. So how was he supposed to win this fight if his opponent could ensnare his senses and leave him practically helpless? The only idea Katsuo could have was to have fun with it and if lucky possible waste his opponent's chakra as much as possible.[break][break]

The shuriken launched at himself would hit their mark of course resulting in his substitution activating leaving behind a substitute in his last place while Katsuo would appear somewhere else in the smog a distance away. The genjutsu still had a hold on him so he didn't move too far from his original spot, but he was somewhere else. Making his hand seals again for another subsitution jutsu he was ready for his assault. From the shuriken attack, he gathered Amaya could somehow see in the dark so there was no point in trying to find him instead Katsuo would see if there was a time limit to his smog attack. "You are making me so sad Amaya," Katsuo would say aloud giving away his newfound position change, "Leaving me blind to such a beautiful face such as yours how am I supposed to appreciate such a fun and deadly match if we can't be locking eyes in fierce combat?" It was a gamble to rely on psychological warfare, but he had to try and for all he knew his words would fall on deaf ears anyway. "Was our kiss just a quick moment of passion?" Katsuo would continue asking, "I wanted more from you, and yet here you are cowering behind a dense black smog afraid to face the one who would love to return your passionate declaration of love."[break][break]

Cowering? The moment Katsuo's voice pierced the silence, Amaya felt a surge of predatory focus, a clear betrayal of Katsuo's location amidst the darkness. Hajimari spun lightly in his grip; ready. Katuso would learn the meaning of cowering at the end of this. No words could deter Amaya from his pursuit.. There was no Amaya left, only the manifestation of the hunt itself, where only the outcome of bloodshed was inevitable. [break][break]

Katsuo's reluctance to engage, to move or even to exude the faintest hint of fear, was disappointing. The thrill of the chase, the tension of a worthy opponent's resistance, the pungent scent of fear—these were what he craved. Yet, he found none of that here. The boy's stationary position, likely a result of the genjutsu's grip, meant it was likely enough to render him an easy target. Amaya wanted more, but despite his desire for a chase, something urged him to battle with mercy. He could not have a proper hunt, not with him. [break][break]

Determined to bring a close to the hunt, Amaya moved in afte performing two handseals. As he advanced towards Katsuo with Hajimari at the ready, would provide Katsuo with momentary freedom from his genjutsu’s hold. This respite, however, was a mere moment before another would shift into play. Amaya allowed himself to briefly note the few makibishi that littered the ground.[break][break]

As he closed the distance, Amaya's strike was a feint, a deliberate miss that carried him past Katsuo and back into the veil of smog. Multiple figures of Amaya would emerge from the smog, each one coming within inches of striking. A barrage of illusory assaults would mask the real threat—Amaya himself, weaving through his duplicates, seeking the opportune moment to strike. Hajimari would find its mark, hopefully only once was all it took. After several iterations of the barrage of attacks, Amaya would rake Hajimari deep across Katsuo's ribs unless he removed himself.

Once the target is trapped within the trigger, they will begin to see Amaya rush at them from all directions within the black smog and disappear back into the smog. The illusionary Amaya will not strike the target, but they will seem as if they just barely missed. While the genjutsu is in place, the real Amaya can strike his opponent. As soon as Amaya makes contact with the target the illusion is broken

He didn't respond to his taunt which was a tinge of annoyance to Katsuo, but honestly, what did he expect from his opponent? If he was rattled so easily the dome he created in the previous round would have been a lot more to his advantage so whatever Katsuo was flexible. Besides he knew his position was given away by his words so it was only a matter of time before Amaya decided to come from him and it wasn't like Katsuo wasn't armed so he was prepared for him either way. [break][break]

Katsuo would begin to feel the world rebalance which meant the genjutsu he was placed under originally was released. Good, that meant Katsuo could fight back now instead of relying on his substitution to tire out Amaya, but even then he had to be careful as it also meant his opponent could cast another genjutsu on him. So he needed to be careful and take into account what he knew of the boy's abilities from the last round. So when Amaya appeared out of the smog only to miss Katsuo he got a tad confused. How did he miss? Certainly, he shouldn't have so maybe this was an illusion he got caught under. Katsuo wasn't completely sure but the best thing to do was to see what would happen especially since he had his substitution ready. [break][break]

So he would watch as many forms of Amaya would appear out of the smog around him, but each one's attacks missed despite Katsuo not moving. This meant one of two things he also had trouble seeing or Katsuo was for sure under a genjutsu and if he had to guess it was the latter. Either way, Katsuo played along pretending to be confused at the onslaught keeping his claws up and ready to defend should he hit, and to his luck, an attack would come straight for his ribs. So using his claws to his advantage he would try to catch the blade between his claws and twist his wrist to wrench the blade out of Amaya's hands. Should the blade be taken out of Amaya's hands he would then switch to another of his claw attacks this time one that would give off a myriad of cuts to Amaya hoping to force him to retreat.[break][break]

The clash of metal against metal, rather than the expected buttery resistance of flesh, sent a jolt of surprise through Amaya. It was not merely metal meeting metal–it was the shattering of anticipation. The snapping of a jaw instead of teeth sinking into hot flesh. The realization that Katsuo deflected the strike, even when the difference between his strike and the illusion’s were inches apart, snapped him back into reality. He had gravely misjudged Katsuo by letting himself get lost in the hunt. As Hajimari was knocked from his hand, spiralling into the foggy divide between them, a surge of fear flickered within Amaya. Yet, he released the sword willingly as it twisted his wrist unnaturally, Katsuo’s claws would be more lethal in close quarters. Without hesitation, Amaya continued into the smog at the same pace. Hajimari, now spinning between combatants, continued to exhale its smog, an unmissable spectacle. The emanating smog would become his next move, ensnaring Katsuo in yet another genjutsu if he so much as glimpsed the smog that billowed from the blade. The smog would envelop Katsuo further, becoming denser and more suffocating than before. Everything within arm’s reach would be lost to complete darkness. [break][break]


The urgency to reclaim Hajimari and end this battle hastened Amaya's movements. The initial thrill of the hunt had evaporated, his prey was proving to be beyond his chase. Now, Amaya was left toothless.[break][break]


From the tactical pouch at his leg, Amaya selected three kunai, hastily

affixing each with an explosive note. Softly, he allowed the bells to fall from his palm, painting the arena in his mind. He launched the kunai, creating a triangle of potential destruction around Katsuo. The kunai were thrown to encompass Katsuo’s side and overhead. The blasts could be unpredictable, but he was confident the positioning would avoid the gravest results. [break][break]


Executing a single hand seal, Amaya triggered the explosive notes. The detonation reverberated through the arena, a concussive force that rattled Amaya even from his distance.

The blade would catch in Katsuo's claws and Amaya would let the blade go to which Katsuo would make sure it wasn't too close by and send the blade away from them as keeping it close by wouldn't be a good idea for the fight. This has the unintended effect of Katsuo not noticing the genjutsu used with it as his attention wasn't on the blade, but rather Amaya. The illusions from the previous genjutsu having been released when the two clashed metals meant now Katsuo wasn't fighting with the majority of his senses being practically overturned, but the smog of the area still being a bit of an issue, but at least currently it wasn't any worse than it could be.[break][break]

He wasn't about to let his opponent do whatever he pleased though and wouldn't stand still any longer. He had an idea of where his opponent was because of their close distance originally and went on the offensive. Putting chakra into his claws he would magnetise them so he could begin controlling them. Sending them towards his opponent without so much as a second thought they would go flying straight for where Amaya went into the smog while Katsuo decided to try his hand at getting rid of this smog. Grabbing a couple of bombs from his pouch he would send one along his claws and another behind him for good measure and detonate them so they would explode and cause the smog to be forced away. [break][break]

What Katsuo didn't know was that his claws wouldn't reach their target as they would instead clash with two of the kunai Amaya had sent out while a third would still make its way to him. Once it was in his vision though he noticed the explosive note on it and knew this was dangerous so he would duck to try and avoid the majority of the explosion, but the combination of his two bombs and the explosive note would cause him to be damaged by the force still. He wasn't about to let that stop him from fighting though as he would pull out his staff and get back up and prepare a defensive stance just in case Amaya decided to attack again.[break][break]

Explosions erupted around him, more than he had initiated. The air was clogged with dense, black smog and biting smoke. The brief roar of fire raged, the smog regrowing thicker by the moment. Amaya needed to assess the fallout. A single chime from his bells, and silently shifted position, ensuring he remained elusive. [break][break]

Surveying the aftermath, Amaya noted the disarray: Katsuo’s claws lay scattered by the blast, and his own sword, Hajimari, was cast aside. The urge to reclaim his blade was strong, but it would require caution. He pinpointed Katsuo’s position—a grey figure in his mind, weapon at the ready. It seemed Katsuo had either escaped the brunt of the explosions or was resilient enough to withstand them. The fight was far from concluded.[break][break]

Amaya decided to revert to a simpler, more effective strategy—one he was regretting deviating from. His whistle cut through the smog, his previous illusion disorienting Katsuo once more. The whistle painted another image of the battlefield in his mind. Amaya retraced his movement, ensuring he would not be caught out by his whistle. The smog was quickly filling the gaps left by the explosions.[break][break]


He edged towards where Hajimari lay, allowing the bells to sound again, briefly revealing Katsuo's position. The ring guided Amaya slightly off his direct path to avoid predictability. Fortune had flung Hajimari clear of Katsuo’s location. Seizing his blade, Amaya poised himself, ready to see what Katsuo would do.

This was getting ridiculous the fight was going nowhere and fast at least from Katsuo's side of things. The blinding smog was just too much for him to handle, especially with how Amaya seemed to be able to see through it all in comparison. Plus now because of the explosion there was a loud ringing noise piercing his ears meant he could no longer rely on his ability to hear things. Two of his five senses were now being dampened so how was he supposed to win this? He could just give up, but that wasn't in his nature unless his opponent also gave up though if he was honest he was certain Amaya would never give up. So what was he to do?[break][break]

Katsuo didn't have an answer for this and since there was an uneasy silence about this fight, at least outside of the ringing from Katsuo's ears, he wondered what Amaya was doing. Was he waiting for his move? Well, he could oblige if the other boy wanted and go for an all-out assault, but then he would leave himself without any ammunition for his next match. So in a last-ditch attempt, he decided to use the connection with his claws and guide them around the smog. Each going a different direction in a circular pattern around him. Katsuo had no clue where Amaya was so using at least the fact the boy had to be close by he figured having them fly around him in a circle a medium distance away would surprise the other boy. At least he hoped they would do something.[break][break]

The match was a back-and-forth dance, taking up the entire half-hour they were allotted; much of it was impossible for the spectators to see through, but Kumogakure sensor-nin were on standby to ensure nothing lethal was going on within the darkness, while the announcer narrated what was going on to the crowd with the help of an Omori sensor-nin. He was careful to time his narrations to avoid giving either of the contestants an edge in the fight—there was a delay of several seconds, such that no information could make its way to unintended ears. The timer went off; a powerful fuuton ninjutsu swept through the arena, clearing all the smog in an instant, and two proctors flash-stepped down to ensure that the boys were separated as the announcer declared, "Time’s up!” Each proctors took one of the genins’ wrist in hand. The announcer reveled in the tension for a long moment—the boys seemed relatively evenly matched in physical prowess, but Amaya had held the upper hand for much of the fight, with Katsuo on the back foot and fighting to try to turn the tide in his favor. "The winner is… Shizu Amaya!” Amaya’s hand was thrust up into the air to a cacophony of cheers and boos. Neither of the boys was particularly badly injured, so they were both allowed to return to the spectator box right away to watch the remainder of the day’s fights before the team matchups began.
