After the Raikage’s speech, a massive man of the Fujiyama clan would step forward to take over the nitty-gritty of moving the days’ events along: some of the genin from group C would recognize him as the "trapped” man who had lain in the road beneath his toppled cart the day prior. When the previous fight concluded, he cleared his throat to announce the twelfth of the day's fights. "Next up! Hono Saya of Kusagakure! Versus! Oborozuki Yuri of Takigakure!” Yuri had privately exchanged her scroll for a single dose of Kisei Hai-Kohi (helpfully sponsored by Kusagakure), which was given to her in a glass bottle that she could privately tuck away before the round began. There were two vivid yellow stripes painted onto the hard-packed dirt ground of the arena about twenty meters apart: designated starting zones for each of the genin to stand on. They would be instructed to bow, and then the countdown for the round to start would begin. "Three… …two… …one… Begin!” HONO SAYA VS. OBOROZUKI YURI

Saya took a long, slow breath, her shoulder shrugging as she walked down the long, empty corridor that led out to the arena. The one on one matches had been posted in the locker room for all to see, her own name sitting at the very bottom, along with one she recognized from the first round. Oborozuki Yuri had been among the three Genin she had been paired with for the first exam, and though she had not been responsible for her humiliation –that would be the gorilla looking Iwa-nin’s (and her own) fault– but she had been the recipient of a scroll, and that meant the girl had some sort of boon going into this. A boon she had all but handed to her with her actions.

Alright Saya. Breathe. The redhead thought, trotting up out of the corridor and into the arena, the crowd staring in quiet anticipation. They had seen eleven fights so far; some good, some boring, but this would be the last one before the group round. Whatever they had seen, this would be one they expected to be good. Another weight to add to the pile.

Stepping up to the yellow-marked starting space, the Hono girl waited for her opponent to enter, catching sight of the shorter, younger Genin as she too trotted up to the starting point. She had no idea how well rested the other girl was, no way to figure it out in the short time she had before the match began- but she knew a bit about what she was capable of. The girl had a bat, could swing it well enough, and seemed generally competent during the first round, apart from her deception. And she was an Oborozuki. Not a lot to go on, but it would have to be enough.

Saya bowed to Yuri as the announcer, the mountain man from the first exam, shouted out their names to the crowd, which cheered loudly, their roars echoing through the stadium like an earthquake. The redhead straightened herself out once the countdown began, settling into a simple ready stance as she drew Hitsuiken in her right hand and palmed a single kunai from her back pouch in her left, careful to make sure she kept the hilt hidden from her opponent’s sight. She would remember the explosive tag, after all.

Three. Two. One… Go! The Hono girl burst out of the starting zone a moment after the announcer said begin, ensuring that she was moving in the opposite direction from the Taki-Genin. She waited two steps before she tossed the kunai in Yuri’s way, bringing her hands together over Hitsuiken’s hilt, as if she were about to form a very familiar hand seal… and instead focused her chakra into the black-steel blade, twisting it through the metal in order to prepare a single use of the Senkin seal, utilizing a small amount of her chakra to ensure that, if she struck even a small part of her clothes, it would make the whole thing much, much too heavy for her to continue in.

And as for the kunai? It had no explosive tag… but Yuri wouldn’t know that.

This does not allow a character to bypass any restrictions on a Fuinjutsu, and Saya must concentrate on the Fuinjutsu being used through the blade in order apply it, making it impossible to channel a Fuinjutsu through the blade while concentrating on another jutsu (or use another jutsu while a Fuinjutsu is channeled through it).

Forged using a unique blend of Iron Ore that can only be smelted with Yoton Release chakra, Hitsuiken boasts a surprising level of durability for a weapon of its rank, allowing it to shrug off blows that would shatter lesser blades with nary a nick or scratch. Additionally, the blade rarely needs to be sharpened, as its edge is quite hard, though of course it does require polishing and maintenance from time to time (this does not mean it is any sharper than normal).

Chakra Conductive - Fuinjutsu
Created specifically with the users Fuinjutsu prowess in mind, Hitsuiken lives up to its name by enabling whoever wields it to channel fuuinjutsu through it so long as the character has the correlating SA. This allows the wielder to apply said seals to the surface of the next object the blades touches, be it organic or inorganic provided the technique itself can affect said object in the first place. This does not allow a character to bypass any restrictions on a Fuinjutsu, and the user most concentrate on the Fuinjutsu being used throught the blade in order apply it, making it impossible to channle a Fuinjutsu through the blade while concentrating on another jutsu (or use another jutsu while a Fuinjutsu is channeled through the blade).

Every inch of Yuri is wracked with something burning, and she's not sure if it's excitement or dread. Sitting with half of her peers, she watched each fight with gnawing anticipation. One by one, the others dwindled down, leaving only Oborozuki Yuri left for the battleground. On the opposite side, Saya waited her turn as well - and together, for some reason Yuri cannot calculate, they make up for the event's last one on one battle.

Yuri swallows thickly.

Coming up to the yellow starting point, Yuri scans the playing field. There's nothing to utilize, nothing to get in the way. It's just her and Saya. As the announcer is introducing them, Yuri carefully takes out the glass vial to throw it back in one swallow. Might as well get its use out of the way.

Immediately, Yuri feels as though her mind is separating, parting into a single pathway that marches unclouded through her third eye. It's almost disorienting. She gives her head a small shake. The world feels a little clearer.

BEGIN.

The kusanin pinkette launches off her feet, so Yuri moves in the opposite direction. What does she know about the Honō girl? She's good with seals, she's deceptive and tricky. That's really it. It'll have to do. Plainly, Yuri only dodges the kunai with a few more quick steps in time with the fishing a few items out of two pouches on her person, pulling out six senbon between her knuckles, two kunai for either hand and two boil tags. In one swift motion, she launches one tagged kunai and the six senbon. Holding the snake seal, the tag explodes into plumes of discolored smoke, trailing the wake of the sailing kunai before it lands somewhere at Saya's moving feet. The senbon come directly behind it, aimed for Saya's legs.

Yuri keeps moving, taking a few good bounds backward to widen the gap between them. If nothing else, Yuri doesn't want to be left in close combat with the girl. She isn't sure a bat will hold up against a sword.

Once detonatied the nearly colourless mist (the colour of the mist can be changed by altering the seal at creation) will fill a 5x5 metre area (1 post) and will continue to emit acidic mist for 2 rotations. The acid is potent enough to cause skin to burn on contact, and prolonged contact will cause flesh to blister.

The moment Saya saw Yuri dodge, she knew something was off. The Oborozuki girl hadn’t been nearly as quick on her feet in Round one, and they’d had a grueling race in between then and now, with very little sleep to recover. Which meant that she’d either been holding back severely to throw people off, or… It has to be what she drank. The thought flickered through the redhead’s mind as she kept moving, her honey-yellow gaze tracking the projectiles that had been thrown her way as best she could.

A quick burst of speed is enough to ensure the kunai miss their mark and keep her outside of the rapidly expanding cloud of mist they’re emitting, but the senbon are another matter, with three of them piercing her left calf. Leaping up onto the wall at a run, the Kusa Genin pushes off, not utilizing the tree-walking technique but rather her own inertia to race to up a few steps, only to push off and, with a wince, pull another kunai from her pouch and toss it at the other girl, who widened the distance between them while she was dealing with her attacks.

Saya doesn’t expect her kunai to land- in fact, she’s almost certain it won’t. But with the other girl constantly having to circle the arena to stay away, she also knows that, eventually, they’ll end up swapping positions, with her on Yuri’s side, and Yuri and her own. And when that happens… then she’ll be able to spring the trap.

Still holding her last kunai, Yuri tracks her opponent carefully. She takes three senbon in the leg and Yuri feels a swell of excitement. She hadn't anticipated hitting her mark. Truthfully, her only plan is to keep moving, to not die. So far she's doing well enough, but she knows she can do better.

The waterfall genin watches as Saya takes to the wall, eliciting a few cheers from the stands directly above, and bounces off with another thrown projectile. Again, the Oborozuki plainly whisks sidways out of the way; but this time, instead of going further back into the other side of the arena, Yuri launches forward, toward Saya, last tagged kunai in her mouth now as she strings together only three handseals. Nothing happens.

Still attempting to seal the distance, Yuri lets out a throaty scream as she resumes her tagged kunai, holding it over her head should she get close enough - as soon as they're within three meters of each other, Yuri casts the snake seal, sending the tag into another plume of nearly colorless acidic mist. In a brutish attempt at overpowering, Yuri tries to plunge the smoking kunai down into Saya's shoulder. Apparently, Yuri is nearly unfazed by the cloud of corrosion, though she wouldn't want to stay in it much longer.

[Honō Saya]

Saya keeps moving, every other step sending a jolt of pain through her left leg that has the redhead grimace, her honey yellow gaze focused on Yuri’s small, nimble frame. The Taki Genin is moving as well, a kunai held between her teeth as she charges across the arena at her, seemingly unaffected by the almost colorless mist. The younger redhead forms three hand seals as she runs, seemingly doing nothing, but before the Hono girl can puzzle out what her opponent is doing, Yuri is there, screaming through a cloud of colorless mist and stabbing her kunai down.

She moved without thinking, her body reacting on instinct as she brought Hitsuiken up, twisting to one side so that the flat of her blade impacts against the Taki-nin’s right sleeve. Pain flares through her entire body the moment she comes into contact with the mist, a burning sensation flooding her mind as she realizes what it is- some kind of acidic mist, weak but still potent enough to do serious damage if she remained in it for long. With pain flooding her limbs, Saya does the only thing she can and rushes away from Yuri, hoping that her block is enough to implant the Senkin seal onto her opponent’s clothes, as the sheer pain she is experiencing means it's impossible to maintain any sort of technique like that.

Regardless of what happens, the Kusa Genin comes to a rolling stop a few meters from where Yuri exploded her kunai, skin as red as her hair, eyes watery with tears, every part of her screaming to stop… but she doesn’t, wobbling to her feet in an unsteady stance.

DESCRIPTION: Less a set technique and more a way of utilizing one’s weapon to the fullest, Ryuurei Fusagu is designed around one core concept- the art of "flowing,” like water, around an attack in order to open up new angles and create opening in an opponent’s defenses that would not naturally be there if you stand against them face to face. To this end, the steps of the technique are rather simple: the user brings their weapon up to deflect an opponent’s blow as normal, but steps around the attack rather than holding their ground (without dropping their block), thus deflecting the incoming blow while forcing their enemy into a momentary overextension, opening them up for a counter-strike. Though quite useful, this technique is limited to use in close quarters, and is utterly useless at range.

[Oborozuki Yuri]

It would appear to Saya as though her block had faltered in a way that sent the sharp edge of her blade down and through Yuri's attacking arm, severing her at the shoulder. The limb falls unceremoniously to the earth. Yuri does not stop screaming, the string of cries flooded now with pain and horror as blood waterfalls from her amputated bicep.

Because of the pain she's experiencing, the Genjutsu would fall away immediately, only having given a silent Yuri enough time to make it partway forward in the same moment that Saya is trying to get away in the same direction. The waterfall genin knows she hasn't much time before Saya will react - the wheels of Yuri's mind turn quickly and suddenly her feet are moving, taking her toward the teammate who'd betrayed them all earlier yesterday. In the moment, Hotarubi flutters across her mind; choices, consequences.

Only a few meters ahead of her, Yuri launches her smoking kunai finally, aiming for the ground at Saya's feet again. This time she barrels in behind it, through the acidic mist, as she pulls her bat off her back. Bringing her other hand up in the same motion, she double fists the hilt of her metallic weapon and brings it out and over her head hard, aimed for the girl's shoulder or neck area in a sideways diagonal bash.

After three hand-seals, the user will cast a Genjutsu over their opponent. When the opponent attacks, it will seem as if their attack lands, landing a mortal or fatal blow upon the user, when in fact the user is moving around unhindered, leaving their opponent open for attack.

Everything hurt.

Saya took in a single, ragged breath, her vision blurry and indistinct; she could have sworn her block had worked, could have sworn she had seen the Taki-girl get her arm cut off in a horrifying spray of blood and gore… but then it had vanished, and Yuri simply hadn’t been there. Instead, the girl was a few meters to the right, smoking Kunai flying towards her feet with precision, the acidic mist making her already blistered skin peel even more. Instinctively, the redhead closed her eyes, protecting her vision from further harm, Hitsuiken held up in a defensive manner as she tried, unsuccessfully, to run out of the expanding cloud of mist, only for her opponent to come and intercept her with a single, swift blow that struck the Hono girl’s right shoulder.

Pain shot up the young girl’s arm, her shoulder crunching beneath the weight of Yuri’s bat; her blade clattered to the ground, body tumbling in a rough roll that only added to her injuries as blood sprouted from her nose, the impact of the blow and her roll forcing her to inhale the acidic mist, which burned the inside of her lungs and left the young Kusa-nin barely conscious on the ground.

The fight, short as it had been, was over.

She had lost.

The fight drew to an abrupt close as Saya collapsed to the ground. There was a brief susurrous murmur that ripped through the crowd of spectators as everyone craned their necks to see what was happening; the view from the stands was somewhat obscured by the cloud of acidic mist, and it was not immediately clear if the fight was going to continue. Medics appeared in the arena in a flash, one physically interjecting himself in between Yuri and the prone Saya to keep the fight from progressing any further as two more medics carefully, gingerly lifted Saya onto a stretcher and removed her from the field. Gasps, cheers, and raucous booing erupted from the crowd of spectators as the announcer moved forward and shouted, "Oborozuki Yuri wins!” Yuri was briefly assessed by the third medic to ensure that she wasn’t notably injured; once she was cleared, she was congratulated and allowed to go back to the spectator stand allocated for the genin in between rounds. Saya, meanwhile, would spend most of the next hour in the care of Kumogakure’s medical team: mystical palm was used quickly and precisely to heal the internal acidic damage to her lungs, and once that damage had been rectified and the girl was no longer in danger of permanent damage, a combination of bone setting and bone mending techniques were used to set and repair the worst of the damage to her shoulder and collarbone. The site of the injury would still hurt, undoubtedly, but with quick triage and treatment it was ensured that she was at no risk of accidentally injuring herself further. The question remained: did she want to continue on to the final portion of the exams? If not, then further treatment would be provided to make sure that she was one hundred percent recovered; but if so, then her treatment would stop once the medics were certain than continuing on would not result in unintentional self-injury. Saya did want to continue one, so she was released back to the spectator exams with quiet words of encouragement, just in time for the first team match to be called.
