     Uncharacteristically, Ren had considered simply staying in bed all day today. His body had been sore, and he was still bruised and cut and wrapped in bandages. But more than any sense of fatigue, it was guilt that'd compelled him to even consider it. He'd treated Sadako worse than he'd thought himself capable of. Was it the stress of being Sanosuke's assistant?

     Groaning, he'd pulled himself out of bed and forced himself to head out into the clear, sunny day. His eyes burnt. He'd still been half-groggy and grumpy for most of the walk, but had stopped at a stand to get himself some food and drink, and by the time he'd arrived in the Arashi Teien for his morning training he felt better in mind and body.

     All he really wanted now was an excuse to not think about last night's spar. He'd sliced up a kenjutsu dummy, but tossed his sword into the dirt. His books on Genjutsu he'd been asked to study couldn't capture his attention. Ultimately, he'd ended up pounding his fists and legs against a tree until his skin was ripped and red and his pants worn.

     Sweating, he sat down onto a cut-down stump in the half-moon clearing he was in and drained his water bottle before running a hand through his damp hair in defeat, surrounded by tossed-aside training equipment and notebooks whose pages were ruffling in the wind.

Contrary to popular beliefs, shuriken was not always shaped in a star with four straight and sharp edges. Also known as throwing stars, or ninja stars, they actually came in a myriad of forms. Curling star, edgeless circle, heck, Akirei even saw a snowflake shaped shuriken from some travelling merchant. Regardless of the shape, all the shuriken shared one similarity, which was lethalness.

Holding a normal star shaped shuriken with his hand with care, Akirei was studying the property and shape of the weapon. After the private lesson from Yasuwa-sensei, who also turned out to be the master of his mother, Akirei had begun to pay more attention toward the weapon itself. In this case, it was the shuriken, a small and simple metal weapon.

After days of theoretical research, he felt compelled to explore the practical aspects. He decided to spend his whole day at his favourite training ground, the Storm Garden. While contemplating suitable training partners, his attention was drawn to a familiar figure - Ren, his former teammate now serving as the Lord's Advisor.

Noticing Ren's apparent fatigue from afar, Akirei hesitated, wondering if it was appropriate to ask him for a sparring session. "Hi Ren." The masked Susano greeted him with a slight bow.

     Ren looked up, smiling only a tad more warily than usual. "Oh. Hey, Akirei. What's up?" he asked as he sat straighter. The shuriken in his old teammate's hand glinted off a sunbeam and into his eyes, perking him up a little. "Came down here to train?"

     Rubbing his roughed-up hands together, in an unconscious attempt to hide the damage, he realized what he was doing and fetched a bandage roll from his bag and began to wrap his hands in the way he'd learned while doing Taijutsu spars at the Takeda compound. Wasn't much point in hiding it from Akirei, he figured. They'd been on a team long enough for Ren to know he was sharp-eyed enough to spot that, even if might not say anything about it.

     With a little bow of his head, he continued. "I've been working on getting a little tougher, myself. Sadako really, well, showed me, I guess." he said with a laugh. "But she also helped me get better at dodging and reacting, so... if you wanted a rematch? I'd be ready."

     He tied off the last bit of bandage and stuffed the remainder into his thigh pouch, tidied up some of his books while talking to Akirei on the side. "Working on shurikenjutsu? Could put my new skills to the test, see if you're accurate enough to hit a moving target?" he said.

"Yup, sure." Akirei's response retained its usual air of coldness and aloofness, a demeanour that Ren, as a friend and teammate, should be well accustomed to. The Susano struggled with interpersonal communication, a fact Ren knew all too well. Floating backward, he created a ten metre distance from his sparring partner.

As he set down the bag by a nearby tree, the typically reserved Akirei broke his silence with a few more words. "Do you need a rest?" Observing the light injuries on Ren's arms, Akirei considered whether they should postpone the spar.

"I have to give you a heads up in advance… it's not your everyday metal shuriken I'm using." Having been Ren's mission partner for some time, Akirei assumed Ren would understand what he was talking about. In this match, Akirei would be using his paper weapons. Ren wasn't entirely off the mark in deducing that Akirei was refining his shurikenjutsu, but it only painted half the picture.

Akirei was, in fact, honing all his weapon skills, aiming to become a jack of all trades — an ability that aligned seamlessly with his fighting style, allowing him to manifest any kind of weapon at will. "King of Weapons" was the title he aspired to, and the first step toward the goal was mastering shurikenjutsu.

With a respectful bow, Akirei assumed his fighting stance, patiently waiting for his partner to prepare before commencing the spar.

     With a nod, Ren stood up and stretched out a bit while clenching and unclenching his fists to ensure the wrappings weren't too tight. "I'm alright, just give me a second." He piled his things up, sucked down a gulp from his water bottle and wiped his brow. Finishing his preparations, he pulled his katana out from the ground and wiped the dirt from the blade with the crook of his elbow.

     Twirling the blade around in his right hand and alternating between a series of one-handed seals with his left to get himself ready, he assumed a position some distance away from Akirei. "Don't hold back," Ren told him. "a few cuts or stabs are nothing to worry about. Hospital's not that far away besides." And if he was clumsy enough to get hit, it was no one's fault but his own.

     "Let's do this." he said, taking the katana in both hands and lowering his stance, ready to burst off to either side. His reflexes had made dodging or deflecting much easier, but he knew Akirei had plenty in the way of attacks that he couldn't simply avoid - perhaps he'd have a chance to make use of some of the Doton he'd learned.

"Okay." As soon as Ren drew his katana, Akirei responded by crafting several paper shurikens from his left palm. On the surface, they appeared as standard, four-pronged star shapes akin to the everyday metal shurikens everyone used. However, hidden within them were explosive and flash tags, ready to be detonated at Akirei's discretion.

Reaching out for the one with a flash tag, Akirei hurled it forcefully toward Ren, followed by the launch of four other paper shurikens made with explosive tags. Unlike the initial straight-line trajectory, the subsequent four shuriken veered widely to the far right and left, seemingly missing the target entirely.

Then to everyone's surprise, the shurikens executed a dramatic inward turn, resembling a flying bird in the mid air. In reality, the shape of the shurikens had been expertly modified to navigate a specific direction through air drag, employing the aerodynamic principles.

Akirei had dedicated considerable time honing his paper manipulation technique, a skill he had been unknowingly practising since childhood. From origami to kirigami, he immersed himself in all paper related things, mastering the art to the point where he could shape paper in all kinds of forms in a split second. While a typical Susano could perform such feats, they could only perform one at a time, and either at slower speed or lack of quality.

As soon as the explosive shuriken began to turn inward, the first shuriken thrown detonated, creating a powerful shock wave that could blind and deafen Ren if he wasn't careful of it.

     As soon as the first star was launched straight at him, Ren was on the move. While his sword was at the ready, he'd not yet forgotten the roasting he'd received from the explosive tags hidden in shuriken during their last spar - couldn't be too safe. Without some way to determine which was which, deflecting would be a poor option.

     Dodging to the right, he kept his eyes open as he saw the other four swing wide to either side. Akirei didn't seem one to miss, so he figured they'd come around in a large and wide circle - he'd have plenty of time to plan a defense.

     But as soon as the thought'd left his mind, they seemed to gain a life of their own and - as if they'd bounced off something - completely changing trajectory to follow him, almost. They track now? Sinc-

     The first shuriken, now to his left, exploded into a bright flash with a roaring noise. Ren'd been lucky to not be looking right at it, but his vision was still washed in white and ears ringing. Instinct took over for thought, as he formed the one-handed seal for a shadow clone.

     With more shuriken coming in from both sides, he couldn't possibly block them all. The flash tag had been a surprise - Akirei hadn't used that last time. Half-blind and partially instructed by a yell from his clone, the duo raised up two earth walls just barely in time to protect themselves from the explosions.

     But the real Ren, battered from the first explosion, had barely had time or concentration. His wall was doughy, the explosion of the first of the two had blown it half open, the second burst it. He was thrown backwards into his clone, dispersing it, and straight into the opposite wall.

     Winded and dazed, he rolled away to the side, covered in dirt flecks and clothes slightly singed, and shook his head. Vision cleared, he prompted Akirei to try him again.

Upon reaching close enough to Ren, the curving shurikens detonated almost simultaneously, a surprise with no visible signal or hand seals from Akirei. It marked the first time he revealed this technique to Ren. The mechanics behind this innovation stemmed from a custom made tags designed for the Susanō Clan. These tags could be triggered remotely with a simple flick of the hand.

As the settling dust revealed the aftermath, Akirei found himself surprised. "Earth Wall?" Ren's mud wall had effectively minimised the explosion's damage, but what astounded Akirei even more was the jutsu itself. He couldn't recall Ren having knowledge of such a defensive move.

After ensuring Ren was still ready to continue the spar, Akirei decided to introduce something new. Remaining in the same position, he raised his right arm high, causing paper sheets to separate from his skin and gather around his right palm. After a few seconds, he formed a massive fuma shuriken using his favourite technique.

From a distance, the fuma shuriken appeared akin to the standard windmill version used by the Fuma Clan. However, Akirei actually manipulated its structure to allow for high-speed curving when thrown. Additionally, he enhanced the edge to be exceptionally sharp and durable.

"Hope you can take this." With a deep breath, he hurled the fuma shuriken with full force. As always, it housed numerous explosive tags, yet this time, Akirei refrained from an immediate detonation. He wanted to test the shuriken's strength and durability first.

The aerodynamic design enabled the large shuriken to curve dramatically toward Ren, but what proved even more astonishing was the chaotic and unpredictable nature of its trajectory. This effect was achieved as the surface of the shuriken crumbled bit by bit, unveiling a new aerodynamic structure every split second.

     "Seems you've got new tricks, too." Ren said in response to Akirei's mention of the earth wall, as he wiped dirt from his face. "What'd you expect though? The Lord's right-hand-man can't be slacking off, can he?"

     As the paper slid up Akirei's arm and formed into a giant shuriken, Ren considered his options. Surely, he thought, to make something of such a larger size, he'd have to give up the explosives? Unbeknownst to him, though, Akirei had done far more with his time than just learn simple tricks or parallel utility.

     Thinking it was only a matter of deflection now, Ren flooded his katana with Doton chakra to sturdy it. He dug his feet in and put his katana by his hip as though it were in a sheath. Carefully placing his hand upon the hilt, he tried to make the best use of his new reflexes to counter with maximum efficiency at the precise, correct moment.

     The fuma shuriken shot at Ren in a curve, but he tracked it all the way - wobbly, he thought, but that wasn't an issue. What he didn't notice, was the ever-changing shape of the thing. Right when he thought the timing was right, he swung his blade in a powerful diagonal slash to deflect it. But the shifting aerodynamics caused the shuriken to arrive later that he had expected before, and he swung too early.

     His katana's tip clanged off the edge of one of the arms, rocketing his arm up into the air as the shuriken rushed at him. Even with the split-second nature of the counter, Ren would've had barely enough time to take a large step back and avoid the blades - if it weren't for the wobbling. The sharp edge struck his collarbone and cut a clean line out to the edge of his shoulder - not too deep, but exceedingly painful, as Ren soon realized.

     But he wouldn't let injuries deter him. Ren brought his sword back down and prepared to either dodge, block, or evade any further attacks that might come from Akirei or the weapon.

Ren's intuition served him well - Akirei had no intention of detonating the fuma shuriken this time. His pursuit was mastery of weapons, not specialisation in explosives. Ren had proven too great for such a trick to work, but Akirei was actually happy to know that. "Good. Seems like I don't have to hold back." As soon as the massive shuriken passed Ren, Akirei swiftly triggered his secret move.

A pulling motion with his right arm, despite not physically pulling anything, produced a distinctive crack on the shuriken. While still spinning rapidly, the middle core suddenly disintegrated, causing the four paper blades to disconnect and scatter in different directions due to their momentum.

This move, a detachable fuma shuriken attack, wasn't precisely a secret move, although it was rarely used nowadays, it was actually a well-documented jutsu. By disconnecting the fuma shuriken mid-flight, the blades could still hit the target after passing it. However, due to their arrangement, only one or two blades could strike a single target.

But if that was what Ren thought, he would definitely regret it. Akirei then clarified, "While I won't be using explosives against you again, that doesn't mean I wouldn't use it as propellant." With a well-timed snap of his fingers, the disconnected blades flying against Ren's direction exploded. The ensuing blast propelled the blade back toward Ren, presenting him with total four sharp edges hurtling in his direction.

     The detachment of the blades still came as a surprise to Ren, even if he'd been expecting something. While it might've been familiar to Akirei, Ren had only ever read about more sophisticated shuriken or shurikenjutsu such as that. He prepared to dodge the one that seemed to be coming his direction, while being careful of a second nearby.

     Yet his preparation was mostly squandered when they yet again changed - an explosion, and now all four were bearing down on him. No time to think. Ren practically dived headfirst towards the ground, forming two seals as he did so. Using the Shinjuu Zanshu, he tried to seek cover beneath the ground, getting as close to the now-liquefied earth as he could, as soon as he could.

     The first blade ripped through his right sleeve, and Ren could've sworn it cut him - but somehow, it didn't. His arms were in the earth now. A second flew by, nearly missing his left leg. Safety, he thought, but the third and fourth followed him into the softened dirt.

     The third sliced the side of his leg, the fourth barely stabbed into the back of the other and fell out - the only thing preventing worse damage was the liquid earth slowing it down. Ren swam away, trying to create distance and time in case any of the paper blades somehow followed him, before surfacing some meters from Akirei.

Despite Akirei's mastery of chakra control, the relentless assault had drained his reserves. Even though he hadn't taken a single step, beads of sweat dripped from his forehead, a visible testament to his exhaustion. Not willing to risk fainting during the spar, he resolved that the next clash would be his final attack.

Raising both arms high in the air this time, he slowly waved his hands in a downward motion, as if conducting a ritual summoning of a demon lord. Of course it wasn't a ritual… Well, wait, was it? Akirei's motions resembled those of a cult shaman, and the fact that paper pieces were tearing off from his body and taking on some shape didn't actually help to dispel the eerie feeling.

Fortunately, a second later, the paper came out as miniature birds — an unexpected relief for Ren, who didn't have to report his teammate for potential involvement in some dark evil cult.

Before proceeding with his final attack, Akirei expressed his concern. "Are you okay? We can postpone the spar if you want." Despite the emotion-killing function of the mask he wore, there was still a trace of compassion in his voice.

Should Ren choose to proceed with the duel, Akirei would simply nod and agree. They were both adults after all (no lol, Akirei wasn’t), entirely capable of acknowledging when to call for a stop if necessary.

     Ren waved him off as he pulled himself from the earth, blood staining his white shirt and darkening his black pants. "I'm fine, I'm fine." he reassured with a smile. Whatever wounds he had, didn't seem to hurt so bad - not as much as they should, anyway. Didn't mean he wasn't pushing himself too hard.

     Stepping onto solid ground, he wiped himself off and got ready. There's no time for postponing. The Chuunin Exams are around the corner. If I can't take this much, what's the point? "Let's keep going." he told Akirei, not even noticing the small hint of change in a voice he knew so well. He was too far in his own mind, his own issues.

     Ren prepped himself as well as he could - ensured the blade was packed tightly with Doton chakra, whipped out a brush and painted a seal upon the katana's surface, stretched vigorously. He wasn't even remotely thinking of his own safety, only 'How do I win?' As if admitting defeat, or his own limits, was a taboo - that if he were to, he would lose everything. That he wouldn't be anything.

     Forming a handseal as chunks of earth began to rip up from the grass, he got ready to take on Akirei's last attack.

"Okay." Akirei calmly raised his hand once again. Paper started to shred from his body once more, forming a massive fuma shuriken. It was slightly different compared to the first one he made, but an outsider would have a hard time pinpointing exactly what the difference was. Ren wouldn't know either, at least not until Akirei revealed it a moment later.

One quick step back followed with a charge forward, he then launched the big shuriken at Ren. The projectile raced towards Ren at incredible speed but somehow missed the target by a wide margin. Just when everyone thought it was gone, it abruptly halted midway in the air, still rotating at a high speed.

As it turned out, two paper strings held it off, similar to a yoyo. With a strong pull, the fuma shuriken came back toward Ren from the back, while Akirei charged from the front with a flock of birds.

Also, at this point, if Ren was paying attention, he would notice that the birds were slowly tearing off to reveal themselves as bird-shaped shuriken. Akirei had realised that it was more efficient to create shuriken through the E-ranked critter jutsu than the Paper Shuriken jutsu. Moreover, he could control their movement, making it work like a Fūton: Kaiten Shuriken. Oh damn, imagine if he put a bomb in it… (he didn’t, he wanted to fight like a real man this time :3)

Though silent, Akirei could barely conceal his excitement, eagerly anticipating Ren's response to his final heavy attack.

     The shuriken flew right past Ren, who half-turned to follow it. With the screeching sound of a fishing reel maxed out, it stopped in place and spun rapidly, before launching back at him.

     Akirei was running at him now as well, surrounding by small paper birds that were morphing into more, smaller shuriken. There was too much going on for him to process and react to - he needed more eyes on the problem. He formed the shadow clone seal.

     Using up practically all of his remaining chakra, ten shadow clones burst into existence around Ren. And he was right in the midst of all of it, clones darting about. Ren grinned. Some of the clones would go after Akirei, overwhelm him with sword slashes or toss earth shuriken to counter - even if they suffered losses. The rest would slash at the strings or help Ren to slow the biggest attack.

     Ren raised his sword high above his head, back turned to Akirei's assault. He flooded the blade and prepared to perform a powerful vertical slash - and add half a ton to his blade, trying to cut right through the fuma shuriken. He was exhilarated.

     But apparently his clones held a higher regard for his well-being than himself. Just as he prepared to take on the massive fuma shuriken head-on, he found hands grabbing the back of his shirt.

     Two of the clones spun Ren around and chucked him out of the way, yanking his sword from his hand as they did so - ending with Ren crashing into the leftover stump of a rotted-out tree, his back smashing painfully against it, feeling instantly fully drained.

     The crowd of clones continued without him - three leaped up and struck the fuma - one with Ren's true blade, and the half ton of weight added - while two slashed at the strings. The other five headed towards Akirei and the birds, chucking malformed shurikens up to try and knock his own out of the air - most of the clones being shredded in the hail, the rest trying to force a win by getting their blades on him.
