Kiyoshi stood in line with the other Sunagakure Genin, mouth flat as he watched the Hokage, Uchiha Eiji, give the initiation speech. He was one of the few from his village, and honestly, between his anxiousness and the constant leers from the bastards in the Iwagakure and Amegakure sections, he was barely hearing anything that Konoha's leader was saying.[break][break]

He was flustered. Four years had barely calmed his anger over his grandfather's murder, as he saw it. And those idiots from the enemy villages had the gall to laugh - not just at all, but at a time like this? He could've sworn he saw Eiji glaring at them as he took a sip of water.[break][break]

Four years. They'd felt like an eternity. Wasted. he thought. Kiyoshi felt like an idiot with this sword on his back. His sensei had been right - he'd split his attention between too many things. He had no right to be here, next to people who had their shit together.[break][break]

And now this white-haired guy from Kirigakure kept looking over at him? What the hell did he want? Kiyoshi'd taken to looking over at him, rather than the Kazekage, until he inevitably looked back as if to ask What? Each time, he'd look away to avoid his gaze and think of insults he'd tell him if they ever fought. Nation of cowards, he'd say. Too scared to fight wars?[break][break]

The Chuunin Exams hadn't even began and he felt like it was already falling apart. Thank Bishamon the desert sun had left him tan enough to hide the flush on his cheeks, though he wanted to hide behind his bangs anyway.

Himura Yasu was antsy. He had been recommended for these exams, but he felt that they were a distinct waste of his time. Their nation was in shambles with conflict brewing beneath the surface. The Daimyo had lost his mind a few years ago trying to subjugate the shinobi forces, to remove the leadership and importance of the role that the Mizukage held. The village of Kirigakure stood strong against the insinuations and attempts. But for how much longer could they stand with an entire clan defecting to side with the Daimyo like slimy cowards? Another clan split half way. [break][break]

All of it sat like a plague inside of the genin, swirling with anxiety in the pit of his stomach as he barely focused on the speech from the Hokage.[break][break]

In an attempt to deviate his boredom and rising frustration from the leader he turned instead to looking around. There were many staunch faces, all seemingly focused - primarily - on the speech. A speech talking about how incredible they all were and all the potential they all held.[break][break]

Yasu doubted it.[break][break]

He had never been one with a great deal of potential, tossed aside frequently for those kids who had noble heritage that belonged to one of the seven clans. Except now one and a half were not so noble and technically traitors.[break][break]

Yasu bristled, finally laying his eyes on someone who appeared just as bristled as he was. Some darker-skinned boy clearly from Sunagakure. Immediately he was drawn to him likely for the feeling of similarity in this moment. But it seemed he did not reciprocate Yasu's gestures of attempting to start a silent conversation he was annoyed more than anything.[break][break]

So when he mimed a 'what' Yasu's brows just raised and he shrugged nonchalantly.[break][break]

The speech would end in due time - fortunately - and the entire group was dismissed, the exams had begun but the first round not yet initiated. That was for tomorrow.[break][break]

Yasu waffled unsure of whether to make a beeline for the other or not as the crowd started to slowly thin out.

Eiji finished his speech and with great fanfare, the Exams officially began. Of course, nothing would be done today except these formalities. Kiyoshi simply wanted to get back to his quarters and lose himself in a book, but before he could do that, he had to navigate through the minefield of enemy Genin.[break][break]

As everybody started to break apart and make their way towards the exits, the Suna-nin found himself pinned between the Iwa and Ame sections. The two groups convened like a river in front of him, blocking the way to his exit. Kiyoshi found himself standing there, waiting.[break][break]

Not only did he have to clear this obstacle, he then had to walk right past where the Kiri-nin who'd been staring at him was - he just hoped he'd left already. He seemed the kind to force his way into someone else's business. From how angry he'd looked before, and the staring, it wouldn't surprise him if he'd invented his own insults as well.[break][break]

He sighed heavily, trying to relax. There weren't any breaks in the stream. Kiyoshi looked up at the Kage's boxes, saw the leader of Amegakure, Masao, looking over the crowd of Genin. He was torn between wanting to shrivel up and hide, or marching up there and trying to teach the middle-aged man a lesson.[break][break]

Finally there was an opening. Kiyoshi darted through, cutting in front of some blonde-haired girl wearing the Stone, who he resisted scowling at, only to slam directly into the chest of the white-haired guy from Kirigakure. He accidentally grabbed his arm to stabilize himself, quickly let go.[break][break]

He looked at his face for a second, his own mouth a little twisted at one end. Kiyoshi glanced around to make sure no one was watching - he didn't want to start a scene. "Why'd you keep looking at me?" he demanded, quietly, more than a little bristly.

The crowd continued to thin out and as his previous target had disappeared into that crowd, Yasu decided to turn towards the exit and make an attempt to leave. Amegakure and Iwagakure genin were all converging on one spot as if they had been placed nearby each other on purpose. Tensions were clearly high around here, higher now more than ever because of the wars that their parents had waged not so long ago. Yasu had been younger, not yet a full fledged genin during the height of the last war, but he had grown up hearing all of the stories and all the news arriving about what was happening...[break][break]

He knew all the legends, the good and the bad - but mostly the good.[break][break]

Soldiers were always brainwashed to believe they belonged to the best. Yasu was not particularly different, except that he was highly aware of his own brainwashing to the point that he had succumbed to his own belief of mediocrity. Which was why he was upset he was here - the 'potential' he allegedly had, he did not really believe he had...[break][break]

His chest felt a pang of pain when someone ran into him. He almost reacted violently when he was grabbed by the arm, but the hand quickly released him and there stood the boy who had been staring back at him but refusing to reciprocate a silent conversation. [break][break]

"I dunno. Bored." It was not an exciting answer but it at was the very least an honest one from the sounds of it.[break][break]

"I might've been, but it's hard to take you Kiri-nin seriously," he scoffed at his fellow Genin, gesturing loosely with his hand to the symbol on his headband. Kiyoshi tilted his chin up a little, making use of his greater height to gain a metaphorical edge.[break][break]

"I mean, you sat out two wars. There's talk you aren't even a real village anymore, like," he laughed meanly. "what do you even do? Sit on your little islands, fighting each others like idiots while the rest of the world progresses? It's pathetic, really."[break][break]

The other Genin continued to move around them. "Are you going to sit out the first two rounds? Maybe attack one of your own?" Kiyoshi taunted with a smirk. He'd long considered Kirigakure one of the least important villages - who cares that they profited rather than lost from the wars, if they then squandered it all in a civil war?[break][break]

And bored? Kiyoshi hated that. They'd all worked hard to get here - he himself didn't even feel like he deserved to be here. And what, this guy thought he was the shit enough to be bored at the Exams? He made a silent vow to beat the passivity out of him.
