The morning air was crisp, and the distant murmur of the homeless strangers served as a constant reminder of the world he aimed to change. The main purpose of this exercise was to increase his close combat capability. It was the same book that had caught his interest earlier in the morning. With eager anticipation, he cracked open the hefty tome and swiftly flipped through the pages until he stumbled upon the keyword, "stronger than steel".

Upon closer inspection, he realised it was crazier than the previous statement. A clear, bolded statement printed on the title caught all his attention. "500 times stronger than steel?!?" His mind was instantly stunned by the discovery.

The synthetic material, namely the Carbon Nanotube Paper, or more commonly as Buckypaper, was a thin dark sheet of paper-like material, but with extraordinary capabilities equivalent to steel sheet. Typically, sacrificing one aspect to enhance another was the common way to go. However, this upgrade offered improvements across the board to his existing paper weapon manipulation technique without compromising any attributes. This was precisely why Akirei was eager to incorporate it into his arsenal.

Moreover, the carbon nanotube paper's exceptional properties perfectly complemented his tendency of concealing and triggering the explosive tags within his paper weapons.

First and foremost, it addressed the problem of intense clashes prematurely destroying his explosive tags before he could initiate the explosion. Moreover, its robust defensive capabilities enabled him to trigger the explosion without immediately destroying his weapon.

By exploring alternative methods such as chemical vapour deposition and arc discharge, he was able to cut the failure rate by at least half. He ultimately opted for the former due to its proven effectiveness in producing high-quality carbon nanotubes.

Akirei was no stranger to perseverance. He doubled down on his research, scrutinising every failed attempt, searching for the key that would unlock success. With each experiment (failure, obviously), he learned something from it and led him closer to the goal.

At one point, he noticed that mixing them in water seemed to yield the greatest result. And as a origami hobbyist, that reminded him about washi paper. Washi paper, or more commonly known by its name, Washi, was a traditional yet not outdated type of paper. It is generally tougher than ordinary paper made from wood pulp, and is used in many traditional arts.

Origami, shodō, and ukiyo-e were all produced using washi. Washi was also used to make various essential goods, including but not limited to clothes, household goods, and toys, as well as vestments and ritual objects for Shinto priests and statues of worshipped deities. They were also often used to repair historical marvels because of its thinness, pliability, durability over a thousand years because of its low impurities, and high workability to remove it cleanly with moisture.

He recalled the process involved soaking them in cold water, followed by beating them into pulp, shaping, pressing, and drying. Attempting the traditional technique, Akirei began by meticulously mixing the mesh with cold water, allowing the fibres to mix up. After drainage to remove excess liquid, he carefully pressed the mixture, shaping it into sheets before subjecting it to a rigorous drying process.

His first attempt to produce the paper composite using the Washi paper method was met with failure. However, he noticed that this approach brought him closer to his goal than any other previous attempts. Hence, he decided to delve into this process, making adjustments along the failures.

All the setbacks allowed him to continue refining his approach. Recognising the limitations of traditional methods, he introduced innovative technologies, including hot pressing, to enhance the bonding between the carbon nanotubes and paper fibres.

Through countless experiments and iterative innovations which spanned for months, Akirei finally achieved a breakthrough. With the refined method and the application of cutting edge technology from his department, he successfully produced the first prototype of the CNT-paper composite.
