The expedition to Kaze no Kuni was looming ever closer, but in the weeks beforehand, Taka had a shift on his team: Kaida was moved off, while a new young person, Uzumaki Shio, was cycled on. Some part of Taka was disappointed; he quite liked Kaida, found her very sensible and intelligent and felt uniquely equipped to help her work through her career after the bijuu had been extracted, but it was not to be.

Shio, he was informed, was generally a pleasant and upbeat person, but tended to struggle with anxiety and had received uniquely terrible tutelage in the past. A part of him worried that he wouldn’t be the best fit to help them learn to be comfortable with learning, but whether or not he felt prepared to assist did not change the fact that he had to assist, so it was best to simply try to get off on the right foot, and make sure that Shio knew he was someone that they could trust as a mentor and source of information.

His mother henning instincts had never been so strong.

Ichi was hungry to shore up their national defenses, so to kill two birds with one stone, Taka opted to make his first real outing with Shio on one of the simpler missions in that regard: taking them out to the Hummingbird Forest to conduct a mock battle, learning to utilize the terrain without causing any damage to it. It was a unique challenge and remarkably low-stakes, but would—hopefully—allow them to get to know each other.

He met with Shio at Kusagakure’s southern gate—the Hummingbird’s Forest was only a few miles beyond, and it would be a short trip there for the day’s activities.

"Uzumaki-san,” he greeted when he saw them. "Kisei Takato. I’ll be your new genin team leader. Do you… have any questions about what we’re doing today? Any concerns?”

He would gesture for them to follow him out through the gate, leading the way towards the forest proper—talking and walking, keeping it comfortable and casual even as his palms prickled with sweat. He wanted, very badly, to make a good first impression.

Shio was most definitely an upbeat person and normally pretty pleasant. Today, however, they were a little more nervous than they normally would be. Meeting a new sensei was not exactly a soothing experience for them in the past. However, they had been told that this sensei was pretty good and would help them out with their hang-ups.

They had been given the location to meet their new teacher and were quick to head toward the gate once prepared for the day. They were given a brief description of what the messenger thought was going on, but it hadn't been remarkably helpful. So when they arrived they were very curious about what their objective for today would be.

"Greetings Sensei” they said as they arrived before them giving them a brief bow of acknowledgment. "I have several” they admitted as they began to walk and Shio found themselves finding their pace fall in with Takato's fairly easily. ” What is our objective today?” they asked, their tone was not curious but eager, they wanted to know, to get things moving forward at least. Especially since it was Takato's choice that set this off, meaning all they had to do was react.

Shio was pretty good at reading people, at least most of the time when someone wasn't actively being deceitful. They could tell that they were not the only ones trying to give a good first impression. "The one who told me where to go wasn't very helpful with details, just where to go.” they explained gesturing with their hands to show a kind of helplessness as if to say 'I don't know what to do'.

Shio seemed just as nervous as Taka felt, which was encouraging, after a fashion. They were quick to cut to the chase, inquiring almost immediately about their objective, eager to obtain concrete parameters for their mission today. They were, it seemed, the kind of person who liked to operate within a clearly defined ruleset; someone after Taka’s own heart.

"Our primary objective is to spar,” Taka said. "We will be conducting a mock battle in the Hummingbird Forest. Lord Tenth’s goal with this particular mission is to ensure that all shinobi forces are capable of using the terrain to their advantage, and to navigate the field of battle without causing any harm to the field itself. Raw power is all fine and well, but today we’ll be refining skill.”

His own predilection for demolitions would make this a valuable lesson for him as well, he thought ruefully. He would be relying on hand-to-hand combat, with perhaps only the barest use of fuinjutsu where appropriate.

After a brief journey, they arrived in the forest proper. There was no clearing in which to train, only the beauty of the nature that surrounded them, which would make avoiding any damage to the flora and fauna around them tricky.

"We’ll start when you’re ready,” he said.
