No 'Missus Scar-Face'
at first... just plain old regular 'scarface'. One corner of his mouth perked up and his brow furrowed just slightly in worried thought. In the boy's defense, Uemon
had called Mikazuki a bad name first...
Sometimes, it was easy forget that he was supposed to be setting an example... though something told him that Kota may have done so either way. Had to keep his cool— especially in tense situations. Aikawa was one of the few to ever crack his steely exterior. Being road-weary and seeking medical attention for a child caused a small slip.
And in his own defense...
that woman had a certain way with words.
"Agreed." He said in concurrence with the child's description of Mikazuki.
"So let's do our best not to get eaten." A discerning glance was cast Kota's way...
...then a faint smirk. Nodding towards the treats in the store for him to run along to. Originally he had not been her biggest fan either. Still, she did offer them a place to stay in the end. Try as she might to deny it, there was more to her than just an abrasive personality. Buried somewhere deep, likely. Not unlike his own 'true' self in that regard.
Dwelling in the depths of his heart. Dormant, perhaps. Or else smothered by his normally expressionless face and the weight of the burdens he carried. Uemon nodded again to Sora as she spoke. Half-smirk holding as he did so.
Most definitely appreciated... and Kota seemed ecstatic.
"Difficult, hm?" He repeated as he watched the boy dart around.
"Is this one uncooperative?" Another question. To Kota's credit, he was normally anything but. A surprise considering his own discomfort around children. Perhaps it was because he saw himself in the child...
But to say it was
just that would take away from the boy's own efforts. Kota was sharp, had good instincts, and was a fast learner— much quicker than he had ever been. More than that even... he was a good kid. Through and through.
A little wild, lacking in some social graces, but nothing some socialization could not fix.
"If you have any, I don't think I'd ever turn down advice..." Uemon said at his cousin's joke, still smirking a bit as Kota returned. Eyes widening just a touch as the boy offered up a stick of dango for him.
"Really? For me?" He said, a hint of surprise in his voice. Reaching a hand out, he graciously accepted the treat. Some warmth spreading across his face.
Uemon glanced to the skewer then to the boy. Slowly, his free hand came to rest on Kota's head again. A grateful nod given but a moment later.
"Thank you, Kota." He said, voice softer than usual.
"And happy birthday."Another gift, and this time from someone other than him. A very, very good thing.
"Is it alright if I share some of mine with Sora?" He asked, looking to the boy for his go-ahead. It was his gift after all, so he wanted to check first. Kota was usually fairly good about sharing— at least with him. So he imagined the boy would agree.
No lesson, no paternal reminders at least not for now. It was his celebration... and he deserved to have fun.
