Keiji smiled. Cultivating skill and strength, within himself and others, was one of few things that made him genuinely happy. One day he'd be gone, but his contributions to his fellow shinobi would snowball long after his death. It was comforting, especially with someone like Shō - there wasn't any baggage to do with family, or obligations.

"I'm glad to give it," he said with a trace of wistfulness. "Maybe one day I'll have to rely on you to cover my back in battle."

"Well, let's go over some deeper concepts." Keiji snapped off a stick from a nearby tree. Tracing a diagram of a chakra network on the ground between them, he explained some further tips and tricks that might help Shō to attain a higher level of control. This went on for quite a while, with the older shinobi attempting to convey as much knowledge to his younger colleague as possible.

When he'd exhausted much of what he thought would be helpful, hours had passed. They discussed and performed a few practical applications and tests, so by the end Keiji felt quite confident that Shō had as good a grasp on the conceptual side of things as he was able to impart. The actual application of them would be up to him, words could only go so far - even if the mind knew something, the body might not.

Keiji had returned from the kitchen with water and light nourishment in the form of rice balls, which he set down on a bench along the wall. Sitting with legs crossed and his back against the wall, he chewed the meal and savored the taste of the salty meat inside. On the tray were an assortment of various other flavors as well.

"Have a seat," he motioned. Their practice hadn't been particularly exhausting, but Keiji was always mindful to take proper rest when he could. Overworking oneself, physically or mentally, rarely had the beneficial effects most believed it to. The body couldn't build muscle, or the mind true learning, without sleep and rest.

"Tell me about your goals, Shō; if you don't mind me asking. Or, we can talk about anything you like. Then, after we've rested, we can try to apply what we've covered and get it all down pat."

The atmosphere had indeed shifted from strict training to a more relaxed and conversational tone. Shō found himself appreciating this shift, as it allowed him to take a break. Also, he couldn't help but feel good to see his senior smile. "You are too modest, really. But I'll do my best to live up to your expectations." He responded to the indirect praise and acknowledgment.

After their small talks, they dived into theoretical discussion on chakra control. Shō understood the importance of grasping the fundamentals and theories behind their techniques, as it provided a deeper understanding of their practical applications. He listened intently to Keiji's explanations, absorbing every word like a sponge. Of course, theory alone would never be sufficient. They would perform a few practical tests on top of it.

When the training session concluded, they settled down to rest. Shō faced Keiji, considering the question about his goals. He chose to offer a simplified version of his aspirations, one that revealed his deep commitment to the well-being of his country without divulging too much about his personal motivations. "I want to make the country prosper." he stated. It was a simple yet meaningful answer.

He turned the question back to Keiji, eager to learn more about the man. "And you, Kuronmeru-sensei? What are your goals and dreams?" They continued their conversation, exchanging thoughts and experiences, as the brief break allowed them to both physically and mentally recharge.

Prosper, he thought. It was a good goal. Not so dissimilar from his own - though he imagined Shō would go about it quite differently. They might both aspire to be gardeners, but he wondered if Shō would be as willing to trample a few weeds along the way.

"It's a noble dream." he said. "I'd like much the same."

"This village isn't the same place it was when I was growing up," he almost sighed out as he stared off into the distance. Someone like Shō might see this as a good thing, as would most in the village. There was certainly less war, less death, less destruction. Yet passivity engenders weakness.

People always said they wanted peace, he thought. But when they get it, they're anxious and agitated. The negative forces they would send outward instead remain bottled up, building to a fever pitch. It was only a matter of time before they took them out on their fellow villagers.

"I won't moralize to you - much." he said with a laugh. "But we've been stagnating for a while now. What good is a Shinobi who doesn't..."

He'd wanted to say kill, but looked over at Shō. Keiji knew his past well enough, knew of his aversion to violence and how he'd been affected by the civil war and the rampage. "...fight."

Even if their end goals were similar, Keiji doubted his junior would go to the same length he would - at least as readily. It was easy enough to say you wanted something, yet much harder when you realized that meant taking it from someone else - wrenching it from their grip.

"Yes, I'd like us to prosper too. We still have enemies out there - " and ones inside. " - and our strength will be tested, eventually. I hope we'll be strong enough to prevent another tragedy."

Shō found himself in deep thought as he absorbed Keiji's perspective. Keiji's words hinted at the weight of harsh reality, a world where dominance and power often scripted the narrative. Well, he was not wrong. It was also a sentiment that resonated deeply with Shō, who had witnessed the devastating consequences of vulnerability during the civil war as well as the Sanbi rampage. He recognized that safeguarding or protecting those important to you hinged upon a certain level of power.

Yet, beneath that belief, Shō nurtured an idealistic dreamer's heart. His hopes were laced with the naive belief in a better world, one where conflict could yield to resolution without the shedding of blood. He pondered the innocence in such aspirations, even if they seemed impractical within the harsh cruel shinobi world. After all, weren't dreams meant to be unrealistic?

After a short pause, Shō chose his words wisely. "You know…" he began, "What truly binds us is our shared vision. We might share different views on how to achieve that, but becoming stronger is our mutual goal." With an appreciative glance towards Keiji, Shō continued, "I extend my genuine gratitude for your guidance today. I'm hopeful that in the days ahead, I have the opportunity to work with you again."

Shared vision. It was a good thing to hear. Keiji sometimes worried he was alone in his wishes for the village and its' shinobi. So many seemed content to simply while away the days, never growing.

"Good," he said with a smile. "there's plenty of work to be done."

Keiji scarfed down another of the rice balls, then swiped a few scattered grains from his hakama. "Let's conclude this, then - so we can put that guidance to use."

When they'd taken their prior places, Keiji once more focused on his attempt at the false summoning. With impeccable control, he once more cast the technique - it had the right feel to it this time. Hardly perfect, but serviceable enough until he could touch up the details in his own training.

At the least, he seemed to be targeting to correct areas of the mind to create the illusion: a large, furry black rat. It looked up at Shō with beady little red eyes, making squealing noises.

"How's that?" he asked, waiting for affirmation to what he'd felt. When he'd gotten it, he gestured for Shō to make his own attempt - hopefully the lessons on control had stuck. He'd be glad for every little bit he could help his junior to grow.

Shō nodded to Keiji, silently concurring that a final attempt would be the perfect way to conclude their training session. He was eager to put into practice all the knowledge and insights they had shared throughout their shared training session.

As Keiji initiated the genjutsu, a huge dark rat materialised before them. It was a remarkable display, possibly the best attempt yet. The illusion was so convincing that Shō couldn't help but feel a jolt of surprise. He praised Keiji, acknowledging that had he not been knowledgeable of the training, he might have fallen victim to the illusion. "That is the best attempt so far, probably even surpassed mine." Every detail, from the top to the bottom, was meticulously crafted, a testament to Keiji's superior chakra control and experience in the shinobi arts.

After dispelling the illusion with a "Kai", Shō prepared for his own attempt. He wanted to make his genjutsu as realistic as possible, so he mimicked the real summoning jutsu meticulously, from the biting motion to the intricate hand seals. With a shout of "Kuchiyose no Jutsu", he unleashed the genjutsu upon Keiji. In Keiji's perception, a menacing and incredibly detailed golem materialised from the white smoke, replicating Shō's vivid imagination. The golem rushed toward Keiji with an air of dangerous intent, launching a formidable attack.

After a few more attacking motions that was meticulously crafted as real as possible, the training session finally came to an end. Shō dispelled the genjutsu and turned to Keiji. "Phew... How was that?" He asked eagerly for his senpai’s opinion and feedback, eager to hear how his attempt had fared and how he could continue to improve his genjutsu skills.

The intimidating golem rushed Keiji, swinging its' arms down at him. The ground shuddered in Keiji's mind as he hopped back just in time, narrowly avoiding the falling blow. Had he not known the situation, he'd have no reason whatsoever to believe that this wasn't an actual summon.

Keiji ducked under a wide swipe, admiring Shō's work. Nothing in the details of the creature gave the genjutsu away, nor in the movements - everything abided by the familiar laws of nature. The Kuronmeru darted away out of reach of the golem and watched it fade from existence.

"Good, very good." Keiji stated. "Nothing I saw could've led me to believe I was in a genjutsu." There was no undue praise in what he said. He pointed out a few general area for improvement though, just in case he ran into certain pitfalls he was aware of.

Keiji swiped himself down, straightening his clothes. As he did so, he filed away a mental note: Keep this one in mind. Not only genjutsu skill, but Kai to go along with it: there'd be many missions he'd want to have Shō along for. And find out more about this 'Shinkin Sōsa' of theirs'.

"Careful with the flattery though." he half-jested as he wagged his finger. "It gives the recipient hope. Hope clouds observation."

When they'd fully wrapped up, Keiji led Shō back through the clan complex and out to the street he'd arrived from. Keiji was still unwrinkling his nose when they stepped outside: one of his younger cousins had passed by on their way out.

"I'm eager to see you master control." he said as he turned to Shō with a smirk. "When you do, come back and we'll have a good spar: nothing held in reserve."

Shō felt a sense of accomplishment as he listened to Keiji's praise and feedback. He appreciated the guidance and training he had received from the seasoned shinobi.
