     Electricity cracked through the air, lighting up one of Amegakure's lightning rods like a thunder god's spear. Far below at the foot of the skyscraper, Ren and Akirei sat in waiting; hordes of people passed hurriedly in front of their bench, trying to get out of the downpour. The cold wind chilled Ren's nose. He pulled the hood of his thick black raincoat further forward.

     All his equipment was hidden beneath, obscured from sight by the puffy black cloak. From a casual glance, there was nothing out of place about him - nothing that said shinobi to anyone that might be watching. Just another Amegakure passserby. Ren turned to glance at Akirei, whose face was unseen thanks to another similar disguise.

     They'd been assigned together to this C-Rank mission: a fairly simple tail-and-arrest of a minor criminal. There'd been plenty of complaints and spottings, but nothing substantive enough to warrant locking him up - yet. That's where the two Genin came in: watch him, witness the crime, follow him back to his hideout. A number of his gang's members had been put away already, but a handful remained thanks to the same lack of evidence.

     Ren sniffled. He intently watched the crowd, looking for a thug who matched the description they'd been given. Short cropped bleach blond hair, sunken cheekbones and thin lips. The man had a habit of licking the corner of his lips, where a series of raindrops were tattooed. Any moment now, Ren thought as he rubbed his hands together for warmth.

As Akirei scanned the bustling crowd, he knew that finding their target wouldn't be an instant task. He discreetly swept his gaze from person to person, meticulously examining each face, searching for the distinct features that matched the description. The intermittent patter of raindrops on his hood and masquerade-styled mask provided a soothing backdrop to his focused observation.

The bustling streets of Amegakure were teeming with people, making it a challenge to pick out one individual in particular. People moved about hurriedly, umbrellas held tight, and hoods pulled low to shield themselves from the downpour. It was a sea of faces, each one absorbed in their own concerns. Akirei couldn't help but feel a pang of frustration as seconds stretched into minutes. He knew that spotting the target in this chaotic environment required patience and a keen eye.

Finally, his sharp instincts paid off. Among the sea of pedestrians, he noticed a figure that seemed to fit the description they had been given. No offence to any tattooed person, but the thought of him being a criminal automatically turned him an ugly beast in the eyes of Akirei.

Keeping his composure, Akirei discreetly reached out for his teammate, Ren. "Ren," he murmured, "I've got eyes on the target. He's about thirty metres ahead of you, six o’clock, heading east. Short blond hair, wearing an oversized rain coat." Akirei's voice conveyed a sense of urgency without sounding frantic. He knew that maintaining the element of surprise was crucial, and any rash actions could jeopardise their mission. Keeping his gaze locked on the target, he awaited Ren's acknowledgment and prepared to shadow the criminal as they continued their pursuit, step by cautious step.

     Ren nodded, letting out a barely audible "Alright." He scanned the area Akirei had indicated, being careful to tilt his head so it appeared he were looking elsewhere. Straining his eyes into the corner of his vision, he made out their target. Just as his teammate had said: short blond hair, oversized coat. It was him.

     The criminal walked in a perfectly straight line, despite the crowds. Either they moved out of his way, or were moved. He didn't appear to be all that observant or paranoid at the moment, but Ren had no doubt that if he had even an inkling he were being watched by shinobi he would bolt and the mission would be a failure.

     Ren gave Akirei a flat hand signal that said: wait. The man passed perpendicular to them. His back was now all they saw.

     Modifiying the signal into two pointed fingers, he gestured for Akirei to begin the tail. Ren waited for a couple seconds, faked a yawn, then casually got up and filtered into the stream of people. He could see his teammate a few meters ahead, partially obscured by the throngs.

     The target was further ahead, but Ren had a tough time keeping track of him. For the moment he'd watch his teammate's back, and Akirei would have to take the lead and contend with the flow of civilians that were merging back together after having moved out of the way for their mark. They still had a way to go on this busy street before his projected path took a turn down an alley.

Akirei nodded in response to Ren's hand signal, acknowledging the plan without making any voice or huge reaction. As he trailed the target, his mind recalled the principles of tailing he had gleaned from the Susano Police book during his brief visit of the clan’s grand library. It was an artful technique of shadowing someone through a bustling crowd while maintaining a vigilant watch. Drawing from these teachings, Akirei's mission was clear - to follow the target without arousing a hint of suspicion. The delicate balance required them to stay at a comfortable distance while ensuring they remained near enough not to lose their mark.

With determined resolve, Akirei increased his pace, taking the lead ahead of Ren and positioning himself directly behind the target. He adopted the facade of an ordinary pedestrian, casting nonchalant glances to the left and right, as if he were merely appreciating the sights of the bustling street. His goal was to seamlessly blend in, ensuring that the target had no inkling that they were being pursued.

Amidst the tailing process, a thought flashed in Akirei’s mind, the realisation about his mask. It had the potential to draw unwanted attention, so without hesitation, he deftly removed it. Thanks to his paper hijutsu ability, he was able to make the mask vanish without much movement, akin to a magician. In reality, it was transformed into paper and discreetly moved to his bag. The mask rested safely, concealed from view, allowing him to maintain his attention on tailing the suspect.

     Ren worked his way through the river of people like a salmon swimming upstream. It almost took constant effort to resist saying 'sorry' each time he brushed against someone. If he'd been any more anxious a person, this huge clump of people would be distressing to the country boy.

     A man carrying a box clutched tightly to his chest appeared from out of the group, hurriedly rushing. His shoulder collided with Ren's, forcefully turning the Genin to face the man as he tumbled to the floor and spilled the papers within onto the wet ground. "Shit!" he yelled, drawing attention and glaring up at Ren who displayed his palms as if to say: Wasn't my fault!

     He slipped away back into the flow at the first opportunity, resisting the urge to look directly at Akirei or their target. He'd no doubt seen Ren's face as part of the ordeal, but would have no reason to suspect who he was. Still, if he saw Ren's face again, there'd be suspicion.

     Once enough time had passed for no one to be paying attention to him, Ren sidestepped off the street into a hidden corner. In no more than a second, he had used the transformation jutsu to take on the appearance of a middle aged woman with stress lines and wrinkles that looked more akin to a 60 year old.

     Merging back onto the street, he snagged a lit cigarette from a sitting bum on the corner who grumbled but acquiesced once he saw 'her' face. Ren couldn't see Akirei or the target anymore, but knew they were probably about to turn down an empty alleyway - the most dangerous part of the tail. There wouldn't be any cover or other people for them to blend in with there.

     Akirei, if he could find a way to do it without attracting attention - say, by going into a building first - had the option of flying over and coming out on the other side. Ren didn't though. He sped up, squeezing between the wall and the other people to catch up with them.

Used Transformation Technique, very low cost.

The meticulous tailing process had proceeded smoothly, step by step, he had retained a reasonable range with the target, until he veered into a dimly lit and forsaken alley. Dark and dirty alleys like this in Amegakure no Sato were quite common, and of course, they were rarely frequented by anyone except perhaps the rats that infested the area. Because of that, Akirei knew that following the target directly into the darkness could compromise his cover.

Turning his gaze backward, he scanned the surroundings but found no sign of Ren. It appeared that he would have to make a swift decision on the spot. Concealing his anxiety beneath a calm face, Akirei swiftly turned into the nearest alley, which was two buildings behind the one the target had entered. Once he was well hidden in the shadows and shielded by the pipes, his body began to disperse into a cascade of paper.

As if carried by the wind, he soared up to the rooftop, swiftly navigating over a tall apartment building before stopping on the rooftop adjacent to the alley where their target had vanished. Concealed amid the pipes and shadows, he continued his vigilant surveillance of the target's movements. But even before these actions, Akirei had taken the precaution of leaving an encrypted message on a paper poster he affixed near the street. At first glance, it bore the appearance of a simple recruitment poster for the Susano Police Corps. However, Ren would undoubtedly decipher the concealed message, as it was part of their prearranged plan.

Once decoded, the message would reveal itself as, "I'm on the roof tailing him. The target went into the second right alley in front of this street."

     The disguised Ren hustled down the street, taking care not to bump into anyone. Gotta catch up. Akirei could be trusted to keep an eye on the target, but Ren needed to be there to take over in case anything happened.

     Ren saw one of the pre-planned Susano Police Corps posters they had decided to use to leave messages for one another in cases like this. Focusing hard, he deciphered the message and got the gist of it without slowing down - to make it seem like he hadn't even noticed it. On the roof. Target: second right alley.

     Crossing to the other side of the street, he was buffeted back and forth until he came out to the entrance of the mentioned alleyway. Their target was about halfway down the alley, leaned against a wall with his arms crossed. Ren decided to pass him by and then wait for him to come out the other side, where his projected theft target was located. 'She' popped the cigarette into her mouth and took a drag.

     With one hand on her hip and one on the cigarette, the disguised Ren made her way down the alley. He tried to mimic the sway of a particular kind of woman, matching the slightly ill-fitting dress he'd adopted for the disguise of this middle-aged woman. Just as he hurried past though, their target accosted her. "Hey babe," he said.

     Ren felt his heart freeze, worried the mission had come to an end. But the man simply asked 'her' for a light, which he did by using the burning tip of Ren's own cigarette to light his own. He muttered thanks and then proceeded out of the alleyway.

     From Akirei's vantage point, the target was headed straight for the entrance of a pawn shop - it'd been left as a vulnerable target on purpose to lure the criminal. Ren fast-walked out of the alley behind the target and leaned up against the wall where he could clearly see into the shop where their associate masqueraded as a normal shop owner. Ren resisted the urge to cough as he played the part of the woman, hating the taste of the smoke.

Akirei lightly brushed his forehead with his right hand, a reflexive action even though there was no sweat. The instinctive gesture came after witnessing the target's interaction with Ren. Fortunately, it had only been a fleeting encounter, as the scoundrel had merely asked for a cigarette lighter before departing. 「Sigh, what a lowlife. Stealing wasn't enough, and he had to pollute the environment with those cigarettes.」 Akirei thought to himself, his gaze hardened as he watched the man.

As their target entered the pawn shop that they had intentionally left unguarded, Akirei remained vigilant from the rooftop of the adjacent building. He could not peer into the shop itself from this vantage point, but he trusted that Ren could. If Ren remained attentive, he would likely see the man's sleight of hand tactics as he engaged in theft. Once content with his illicit activities, the criminal made a hasty exit from the building, and quickly headed to another direction.

「Did he manage to steal something?」 Akirei pondered, all the while keeping a close tail on the man from the tall roof. He also kept a watchful eye on Ren, awaiting any signals that would allow latter to convey what he had observed from the ground a moment ago.

     The thief loaded his pockets up, skilled but not masterful. Certainly not masterful enough for the 'clerk' to go unawares. The man was a shinobi after all, unbeknownst to the thief, and one picked for visual acuity at that. The clerk pushed his glasses up with his middle finger, the sign to Ren that they had their go-ahead. The man finished nabbing goodies and make a quick exit, glaring at the clerk.

     He turned and headed off towards Himin Machi, patting down his bulky clothes to ensure his newly acquired wealth couldn't be spotted. Ren waited a second until the man was further down the side street, which was mostly empty save for a few pedestrians here and there: enough to use as cover, not enough to bog them down.

     He pulled the cigarette out, wishing he could scour the inside of his mouth - and his lungs! He didn't want to think about it. He crushed the burning end with a pinch - searing his fingertips slightly - and tossed it into a nearby garbage can when he was sure it wouldn't smolder.

     Ren lifted his arm up high and stretched his shoulder out - the sign to Akirei that they were good to go. With that, he turned and followed the target. Ren dropped the disguise when he had a moment unseen, no longer worried since they were far enough away with a clear sightline he could react and turn away as needed. Akirei'll catch up soon... he thought. Before long they'd arrive at the gang's makeshift headquarters and prepare to arrest them. Whether they'll come along willingly or not was up in the air.

Having noticed the signal from his teammate, Akirei closely trailed the target. They refrained from taking any immediate action, allowing the thief to lead them to his hideout. They could have apprehended him on the spot after witnessing the robbery, but they had chosen to tail him further with purposes - to discover where he had stashed the stolen goods and to potentially apprehend any accomplices who might be involved.

Floating atop what appeared to be an abandoned warehouse, Akirei cast a brief look toward Ren, who was positioned a bit farther away. After exchanging subtle nods, Akirei initiated his infiltration by slipping through openings, transforming himself into paper. Upon reassembling within the warehouse, he noticed there were at least two more criminals who seemed to be associates of the target. It was indeed a great decision to tail them instead of catching the target outright.

Unfortunately, his infiltration plan was thwarted as yet another thief emerged from the back, having just returned after using the restroom. "HEY! Who are you?!" With the thieves now alerted to his presence, Akirei abandoned all the efforts of concealment and immediately called out for his teammate, "Ren! Now! There are four in the warehouse!" Without hesitation, he followed up by rapidly shaping paper shuriken and launching them at the approaching thieves. While the shuriken lacked perfection in terms of shape and sharpness, it was the best he could conjure in that split second moment of urgency.

     Glass popped and went scattering across the warehouse floor as Ren launched through the window, using the thick coat to protect himself. He cast it aside, drawing his katana. "Oi!" he called out in a hayseed accent, gaining the attention of two of the thugs. They pulled out knives.

     "Akirei!" he yelled. "I've got these ones! Careful of those two!" He held his katana in a defensive position as his two thugs approached slowly, clearly hoping to use their numbers advantage well. One darted forward with a jab from his knife, which Ren sidestepped, only for the other to come slashing down. At the very last moment, Ren dodged behind - heart pounding - and delivered a strong kick to the man's side, causing the two to tumble away into some boxes.

     Ren used the moment of reprieve to check in on Akirei. "Don't kill 'em! And watch out!" he warned while pointing at some boxes which one of the men had wrenched open - likely something they could hope to use to strike him from the air. Chains, perhaps. But Ren had to focus on his own fight, as the men had gotten back up and were quickly swinging their daggers in his direction.

     Backpedaling, Ren used his left hand to form 4 handseals and performed the Advanced Clone Technique hoping that the appearance of a second Ren would buy him a moment to focus on one. With 2, he didn't have the time to take care of them non-fatally.

The hastily crafted paper shuriken, while not possessing the power to incapacitate the bandit, managed to achieve their intended purpose, which was to slow down the opponent. One of the bandits had also been drawn to Ren the moment he burst into the warehouse through the window, a dramatic entrance akin to the comic book superhero which he once read as a child. Well that was actually quite long ago, in fact, it was before the civil war... With Ren’s help, the immediate concern for Akirei was the two thieves directly in front of him.

Seizing the moment of respite that the paper shuriken had provided, he transitioned into his angelic form, unleashing two huge paper wings from his back in an instant. With a graceful move, he flapped his newfound wings, propelling dozens of paper shuriken toward the criminals from the high air, as if he was the angelic figure delivering a form of divine retribution without soiling his own two hands.

Both criminals instinctively moved to block the incoming projectiles, an action that would ultimately prove to be their worst decision. One of the paper shuriken detonated upon impact, forcefully knocking them back and inflicting minor injuries in the process. "What the..." Though still alive, the bandits had been injured, effectively removing their chance of escaping from him.

     The clone-Ren ran about almost maniacally, cackling at the thug who chased him around the warehouse. He wasn't a shadow clone, so he couldn't afford to collide with the man, but it gave the real Ren a good opportunity to incapacitate his other enemy.

     The man in question swung at Ren's face, which he used his burgeoning reflexes to dodge. These thugs had amateurish skills and poor form: clearly they'd only just popped up in opposition to the Lord's directives to fix Himin Machi. The miss left the man wide open.

     Ren planted a kick to his chest and sent him crashing through a wooden crate. He flipped his katana and used the blunt side to viscously thawp the man's wrist, then kicked away the dropped knife. He yelped in pain, holding his wrist, then the thug tried to speak - but Ren bopped him in the head, knocking him unconscious.

     The genin whirled around, just in time to see the other thief tackle his clone and disperse it. The man grunted when he hit the floor, then quickly scrambled to his feet and yelled expletives at Ren, charging him down. Ren glanced up at Akirei, making sure he was able to handle his two - it seemed he was doing just fine, and Ren could help him to restrain them as needed once all the men were down.

The two thieves exchanged knowing glances and nodded to each other, their confidence in their escape plan undeterred. In unison, they hurled an explosive tag near a barrel of gunpowder, clearly intending to trigger an explosion that would create a diversion and buy them valuable time to make their getaway.

"Do you honestly believe you still have a chance?" Akirei's voice carried a stern warning. "I would have blow both of you to pieces were it not for my comrade's insistence on capturing you alive." With these words hanging in the air, Akirei swiftly cranked his gear to its maximum setting and shot forward like a rocket towards the thieves. His movement was so rapid that it appeared as if he had vanished from the air, and in a blink of eyes, he executed precise slashes that injured both arms of the thieves and seized the explosive tags before they could be ignited.

"ARGGGG!" The piercing cries of pain from the incapacitated thieves echoed through the warehouse, but Akirei paid them no mind, regarding them as nothing more than troublesome pests of society. He then shifted his attention toward Ren, assessing whether his teammate required any assistance. "I've completed my task here." Akirei informed Ren with a strangely calm tone as he wiped away the blood that had stained his white mask.

     Ren confronted the thug that was rushing him, timing his response to send the man hurtling past with a miss. The man landed on the floor, sprawled out.

     Ren quickly rushed over and stood atop the downed man, who wriggled around and tried to grab his legs. While looking over at Akirei, Ren simply kicked the man unless he quieted down. He blinked calmly at his teammate, a little perturbed by the blood on his mask, but not much. It was all pretty standard fare for Shinobi.

     Besides, the men's arms seemed like they would heal fine. These morons likely didn't have much value in knowledge or skills or anything, he figured. "Well, mission complete then!" Ren said as he knelt down to tie up this thug. "Good job, Akirei!" he said with a grin. Another win. Ren was impressed by Akirei's showings, just as he had been during their spar. Seemed so effortless for him.

     He waited for Akirei to do the same with his, then they escorted them outside the warehouse where they were promptly met by members of the police force. The criminals were apprehended and carted away, leaving the two Genin standing outside in the rain.

     "Good work today," he said with a small bow and a smile. "I'll see you soon, then. Think we've got another mission coming up with Tsuri, don't we?" Ren wished their sensei was around more, but knew she was busy. He regretted he didn't have the chance to learn from a jinchuriki. He waved a farewell to Akirei and they parted ways, until their next meeting.
