The twilight canopy was exceptionally beautiful because of all of the stars out: which meant that it looked like the canopy itself was twinkling between the stars. Which was great for all those who dared to look: but Hotarubi only glanced up and that was it.

How - though, had Hotarubi come about from the frying pan into the oven? His request, and incessant waiting and asking to speak to the Lord had not only commanded the attention of the Lord himself: but their second in command as well. After Hotarubi had taken the time to get out of the underground fortress, what was effectively buried beneath Lord Ryu's estate: he was told, quite quickly, quite promptly to make his way to the location of Kenji's choosing. Perhaps the man also wanted to learn what ailed Hotarubi as badly but with the message he had just learned from Ryu he was feeling much more confident.

And also conflicted: the memory in his mind kept on replaying, and Hotarubi was sure that he felt something that he didn't think he would have ever felt. Focused so hard on the man, he knew that Ryu's heart was still: it was incorrigible. It was competent: and yet, what came out of the Lord's mouth was unlike anything Hotarubi knew. The Yamakira knew strength, but conversely it always knew and saw weakness. The strong and the weak were so deeply ingrained into the culture, it perverted and was pervasive in the Yamakira's daily life. So when Ryu spoke: Hotarubi detected it.

And for all intents and purposes, Hotarubi could not believe himself, and refused to believe it. He had to be wrong. had to be. There was a piece missing that he did not know. So, with that refusal and stubbornness in tow, Hotarubi was set out to explain himself a second time to the Jonin Hancho. As his feet dragged and crunched against the gravel, or as he passed under vine which he swiped at to clear it from his face, his thoughts beneath the surface were pulling him down...

FOR DAWN TO COME

Kenji's gaze rested on the skies above him. Stars twinkled beneath the canopy, small openings in the trees revealing a clear night sky. Nights like this didn't come often in Bonchi no Kuni, with the humid jungles often leaving layers of fog covering the village. The corner of his mouth perked up as he admired the scenery, before the dark cloud loomed back into his thoughts.

Kenji had been in service to Lord Ryu for several years now. The man was his teacher, his council, his leader, and far far more. But lately, Kenji had begun to doubt those thoughts. For years, Ryu had been a pillar of Takigakure, instilling strength into the fabric of their culture. But lately... Ryu had been different. It was subtle, at first, but it grew more and more apparent with each passing day that Ryu was growing soft. He was still a great shinobi, but the imposing ruler he had once been was seeming to grow tired of holding that mantle. And Kenji had been starting to question if Ryu truly was still fit to lead this village.

His attention soon snapped out of his train of thought, hearing the crunching of dirt and gravel coming from the path south of him. He composed himself, his expression growing somber as Hotarubi soon came into clear view.

"Yamakira Hotarubi." Kenji said in a stern tone. "I have been watching you as of late. You've been quite busy."

Coming into view of their more lit area, the red hair was what captured his attention initially. It was very different and caught like some types of funghi he'd seen in the forest (at least, by color).

The tall Yamakira kept his distance.

Kenji did not scare him like Hakurai did: did not make him fumble like Lord Ryu did: but in the land of the Yamakira you learned to not always respect, but be deferent to those stronger: but there was a little bit of leeway. So, standing in front of the man Hotarubi did bow lightly - but only at the neck "Present." And there he would stand placidly: the man himself was like Ryu - tucked away in some remote corner. Was this common with all the leadership? Did they... spend a lot of time away from their desks, he supposed? He would've done the same as well.

Kenji's voice was not pleased. At first - Hotarubi showed confusion. But when the needle dropped, Hotarubi quickly raced through his mind to wonder what it was: had it been the time he'd terrorised those other Yamakira as payback? Would it be the time - oh, shit. The man would clear his throat, wondering how to best phrase this.

Hotarubi felt a sweat bead drip down the crook of his back. There had been quite a few missions. Panic flashed in his eyes as he told the truth. "Shit. Fuck- those cunts in Midorinomura had it coming to them! I know I wasn't meant to be out there but even Lord Ryu said to do as we wanted if I had the power. The missions needed doing and I wasn't hurting - well, I was but-" He was already making use of the advice given to him by Lord Ryu no more than half an hour ago.

He tutted. "I'm trying to say that I did you a favour, commander. For Takigakure." Throw in a little syllable of loyalty. That was helpful in his case. Just how much did he know? How much was his impunity and rule breaking being noticed for? Hotarubi had been... grinding - was the best way to do it. Doing missions out of his purview, leaving the village for missions he wasn't technically 'allowed' to be on... and making a few more waves. It was why his contention for becoming a Special Jonin was already in the works considering he had put in the paperwork.

As Hotarubi began to speak, Kenji could see the young man's mind begin to race. It was a common tactic of his he'd taken in leadership. Speaking rather vaguely with an underlying point, while he would wait patiently for whom ever it was he was speaking with to present their best interpretation.

Kenji's face remained empty, emotionless while the chunin went on about his missions and his recent experiences. In truth, Kenji had beckoned the Yamakira to his council because of his own underlying fears about their Lord Ryu. That Ryu was becoming increasingly more and more unfit to rule. Many, he was sure, would have assumed Kenji himself a shoe in for a potential replacement, but in his heart, the man felt differently.

Ryu was his teacher, and brought Kenji under his wing to give him everything he currently considered himself grateful for. It was a hard enough pill for him to swallow, doubting the one man he had always had faith in. But takin over for him? He couldn't imagine it. Not to mention Kenji himself never considered the idea of attaining such a rank. He didn't feel himself fit for it. He much preferred where he was now. Not as many eyes on him, and he could do exactly as he pleased or saw fit. But Hotarubi, on the other hand... He could be different.

The redhead took in a deep breath, turning his chin upwards as he glared down at Hotarubi, as if to exert an aura of pressure over him.

"Is that so?" Kenji said, his voice gruff, scratching through the air between them. He hummed, meeting the Yamakira's gaze. "How long do you think you can keep this rate up, Hotarubi?" He asked him, pausing for a moment. "When a fire burns as hot as yours, so bright, so fast... They often wither just as quickly."

As he spouted, Kenji's frankly impassive stare was not helping him keep his composure there. So when Kenji - well... did his thing. Hotarubi did notice, and he did absolutely defer: but it wouldn't be in the way Kenji might have wanted.

Whatever aura it was, Hotarubi pushed it back - it was not the same calibre as Ryu's. So, to Hotarubi while he felt pressure from Kenji he did not buckle in the same way - the effects were certainly noticeable as he still felt a nervousness dealing with his superior, the man capable of utterly ruining his career.

Somehow it worried him more that Kenji was being lenient with him on his own admission and conduct as of late. That was because Hotarubi - like his Yamakira upbringing, was waiting for the pin to drop on whatever punishment was coming. First it was the verbal, and then it was the actual. So - he answered reservedly to his commander to the confusing statement. His eyebrows furrowed. It wasn't the correct analogy to use. "Stone doesn't burn out, it erodes over centuries - it endures. I am stone." The Yamakira clan pride seeped into his vernacular: the very titular, clan like way of speaking and boasting about one's own abilities: though he had been very reserved about his use in past - the Commander was fit to know even if he wasn't being direct about what his abilities

Well - now that it had exit his mouth, he wondered if he had just put his foot in it because of his wording. Military code had... great humour. And by great he meant 'horrible' because ninja were smart, spiteful and more than capable of using someone's own words against them. Because while he could endure, did he want to endure? The thought of doing an endless cycle of boring jobs flashed in his mind. The concept of not doing what was fun to him (missions) was a palpable issue indeed. "I aim for perfection, Commander, I hope you understand. Our clan demands it. I deserve it."

FOR DAWN TO COME

Kenji tightened his brow, moving his arms behind his back and grabbing his wrist in a militaristic stature. He let out a small, quick hum, his eyes still locked on Hotarubi's as he let his aura fade.

"Perfection..."

Kenji paused, letting the word linger in the air. He allowed for a moment of silence between the two, standing stalwart in his disposition before letting out a small sigh. He released his arms, letting them fall to his side as he walked toward Hotarubi, passing him, and moving towards a railing near the small creek that had run through their little venue.

He mulled over the words in his mind, letting his thoughts reconcile with one another, choosing his words carefully as he took in another sharp breath.

"Tell me, Hotarubi." he spoke in a graveled tone. "If you are stone, one that craves perfection... Is your dream, then, to become a diamond? Because, as I'm sure you're familiar, stones don't just turn into diamonds. First of all, you, the stone, must be made of the proper material... The proper mineral... You must undergo a near insurmountable amount of pressure to reach that state. Heat. Pressure. Ages of what many would consider agony. All for the goal of... Well. Perfection."

Kenji would again pause, his eyes transfixed on the flowing water that surrounded them. But, after a moment, he would turn back to Hotarubi, his eyes narrowing at the Yamakira.

"So, is that you, Hotarubi? Are you the stone with the right makings of a diamond? Can you endure that burden of transformation? Or if I... Crank you in half, would you have nothing inside you but dirt?"

A miniscule nod from the man, wondering where this was going as Kenji passed him - Hotarubi turned on his heels to where the man was heading to. Like Ryu, almost? Except Ryu didn't move. Hotarubi kept a healthy distance, but otherwise moved from his position and remained in that strong stance.

Hotarubi hadn't thought to run with the analogy that much and as Kenji exerted his will, Hotarubi tried to think about the real conversation that was taking place - and he was running up dry.

"Um..." Hotarubi wasn't sure how to respond. A more intelligent contrarian would have told Kenji that it was carbon and density that made diamonds: but Hotarubi was no such man. Like Ryu it seemed like a threat was bubbling to the surface and it was for him to interpret - was this Kenji's way of telling Hotarubi to back the fuck off in case it bit him in the ass? To stay in his lane? Whatever it was, Hotarubi didn't like the tone that this conversation was taking. "I will handle anything in time." That was a neutral thing to say. He didn't have the power to kill his father, now he did: the only difference had been time. He didn't seem so sure of himself as he spoke.

The Yamakira were doomed to remain as dirt and stone and rock: diamond they would not become. That wasn't something they did and yet that was not the conversation they were having. If this was the makings, of say, a request to train? That he could abide by. But given that he had readily admitted his guilt and participation in quite clear rule breaking, that did not seem to be the case at all. Though he could not see over the stream where Kenji looked down and over he could see the far vines, the trees: the canopy keeping the starts from brightening the way. The clusters of bamboo packed tightly together and the remains of trees which leaves had already passed for the season - even in the warm weather.

The waterfall phoenix would need to elaborate if he wanted any real answers from the Yamakira.

Kenji let out a small sigh, realizing a slight bit too late that Hotarubi wasn't exactly one for metaphors. Still, his answer wasn't exactly off base, but it was about time Kenji put more of a focus on the real reason he called this meeting in the first place.

"Hotarubi." Kenji started, keeping his attention focused on the surface of the water. "I need you to answer this next question with your gut reaction. Do not overthink this, and tell me your feelings, regardless of what you think you should say."

The jonin paused, resuming his posture, arms clasped behind his back, shoulders straight, and his chest out as he turned to look the Chunin in the eyes.

"What do you think of the Lord Ryu?"

Admittedly, he knew this was not going to be something Hotarubi found easy to answer. He himself had asked this very question time and time and time again, trying to find the root of why this question felt so painful. In all of his years in service to Takigakure, Ryu had been one of the only constants he had ever known. The Lord was known for his unwavering brutality, his burning desire for power and control. And yet, Kenji was beginning to fear that Ryu was no longer that same person. Well, beginning wasn't entirely the right phrase. It was something Kenji himself had wanted to do nothing aside from deny this fact. He knew Ryu was no longer the same individual he once was. But, what that meant in his eyes was that... Ryu was no longer fit to lead.

Hotarubi still had no idea what or where Kenji was coming from, if he was going to be receiving an ass beating or a lesson or even a fight to the Commander. He did feel his gut sink at the seriousness of the conversation.

There was a distinct beat that Hotarubi missed when Kenji had asked him to say what he wanted to say. "Powerful." Even if that wasn't what Hotarubi wanted to say, he had believed that for far longer than the disbelief that crept into the back of his mind. Maybe that meant he had failed his test - whatever that may be. It would likely not be surprising to Kenji that the first answer was one that easily rolled off the tongue.

The man was able to do his thinking of why he had come up with that question - maybe it was about respect. Was Kenji trying to impart the wisdom of respect into the Yamakira - to go about his will was disrespect? Was it that if he didn't watch himself, he would find himself six feet under? It would make sense since Kenji was known as Ryu's student - but if the conversation had been any indicative of what Ryu had been like as a teacher, Kenji's beliefs might had been exactly like Ryu's and the Yamakira's - power above all else. Maybe, then, he would be subject to Kenji's own desires. "Can I ask why you're asking, Commander?" Hotarubi would not step forward yet - until it was deigned that this wasn't a ...

Had this even been about what he had just admitted? Fuck.... internally he groaned, wondering if he'd even said something that he shouldn't have and had gotten away with.

Kenji narrowed his brow, his mind trailing off to think over what Hotarubi has said.

"Powerful..."

He echoed the statement, as if mulling over each and every syllable. He took in a sharp breath, almost feeling weary as he turned around once more facing the Yamakira. He avoided eye contact, however, visibly reflecting the turmoil of his mind. There was a moment of silence held between the two, tightening like a rope that was slowly snapping, thread by thread.

"Not too long ago, I would have agreed with that sentiment." Kenji finally said, taking in a deep breath as he tried to regain his posture and composure. He rolled his shoulders, straightening himself, rolling his neck to one side with an audible pop. "I have served with and for Lord Ryu for nearly two decades, now. When I first met the man... He had the presence of a God. He was strong in his vindications, his morals, everything he was radiated strength. Powerful would have been a crude summary by my accounts."

Kenji would pause again, straightening his thoughts, as a strange, almost sorrowful expression crept over his face.

"Lord Ryu... Is no longer that man, Hotarubi."

The words fell heavy, like an anvil falling directly on Kenji's chest. It was clear that he was not admitting his thoughts lightly. IT was like saying it out loud was causing him pain.

"There have been... Talks. Hotarubi... That the Lord Ryu's wife and child, well, children, I suppose, if you count the adopted Konshō." He took a breath, gathering and reforming his thought process. "That they are making him soft. That Lord Ryu may be fading beyond his peak. Make no mistake, Lord Ryu is still a very powerful individual. But as you know, Takigakure prides itself on its culture of strength. And by my own experience, Lord Ryu is losing his grasp on that value."

Kenji would again face Hotarubi, once more holding true to his near emotionless state of being. "Many, I'm sure, would argue that I would be a rightful candidate to succeed him if and when it comes to that. But, given these circumstances... It is not something I feel I could accept." The Jonin would again take a deep breath, his eyes beginning to burn with intensity as he pulled at the Yamakira's gaze. "That is why I have asked you, Hotarubi. That's why I called you here. I want to break you down, Hotarubi. And turn you into a diamond."

He took a deep breath in when Kenji had said what had been on the back of his tongue. Initially, when the Yamakira felt he was being probed, it was because he felt a punishment was coming but for the longer he talked - the less he thought it was about that.

But Kenji was rocking his world, and the expression on Hotarubi's face - usually prided itself on being monotonous. But the concern was easing into his face quite rapidly: the opened eyes, the pulled in eyebrows, the trepidation of the bottom of his chin pulling in to the centre point of his face.

Hotarubi would look down. Avoiding Kenji's gaze. Child, children - pulling the man down. But Kenji was correct. This village had been founded on strength: the Yamakira required it, the Mikatakujira (as he had found out) were scientists: perfection beyond despair.

Was this a test? Was Hotarubi being probed about if he was a treacherous man who was out for his own ends or was Kenji being serious? Hotarubi honed on his sensory abilities, feeling for the man's heart. It was calm: cool - reasoned. It was not beating readily, it was not in stress or duress of what he anticipated to feel from him.

That was a newer ability: but when one could feel the world around him for hundreds of meters, you got good at focusing on the little things. "I spoke to him earlier, commander, and he said that I should hold onto power to get whatever I want and take, or until I'm consumed by something else." Hotarubi wasn't exactly the master strategist but he was able to put together the two and two from what Kenji was saying.

If Lord Ryu was becoming passioned for his new family - his own soul dulling and fading as his desires changed, then that was clear motive. Hotarubi didn't say what was on his mind which was that he detected weakness but it was enough to perhaps pacify Kenji.

"Is this a test? You're probing to see if I could replace Lord Ryu? If I would betray my village?" It wasn't implicitly wrong. Takigakure served his purpose in the way he served Takigakure's - but if there was one thing he did not trust, it was ambition. "The Yamakira in me begs, Commander - why not you? If any one of us detected weakness, we would prey on it." Confused, yet again. He knew his clan teachings, and this was what it told him in his heart to do if it was necessary.

But Hotarubi was no longer just a Yamakira now: he was a person in his own right that was going to grow beyond the Yamakira clan teaching.

Kenji smirked at Hotarubi's retort.

"No. This is no test." The Hancho said simply, his face falling to a rest. The question that soon followed, though, made the man raise his brow.
"And as for why not me, well... I will give you a full answer to that question when you have earned it."

When the Jonin's eyes would again rest on Hotarubi, there was a strange sense illuminating from him. There was confusion coming from him, pushing outward, but behind that was more a sense of... Confidence, it felt like. Kenji could also sense within him, though, the very same thing he feared from Ryu. Weakness. But, there was promise there. The Yamakira was young, and still had much to learn. He was still far from the rank of Jonin himself, so it was no surprise that he could feel a few cracks in the boy's spirit.

"For now, though... I fear our time is running short."

Kenji paused, his head turning off to the distance, before he gaze settle back down on the packed dirt underfoot.

"If I am gone from my post much longer, it would be noticed. And I would rather not be put in a position where I am forced to lie when my own stance is being questioned. There are people who work for the Lord Ryu whose paranoia borders on the insane. Advisors who I would choose to cut in two if I had the choice." Kenji smirked, the corner of his mouth perking upward as he let out a small hummed chuckle. "Perhaps when you are sitting on the seat of power, I will get that very chance."

The red-haired shinobi lifted his chin, eyes peering downward at the Yamakira with almost devilish intent. "I have an offer for you, young Hotarubi." Kenji said, his voice like that of a snake as his eyes went ablaze. "If you are interested in doing what's best for this village. For our entire nation... Take me as your teacher. It will take time, of which, we do not have much, but I will do everything I can with it to turn you into someone to be feared. I will hurt you. I will make you bleed. I will wear you down to the point of exhaustion and then some. But... when we are finished... You will be more than a diamond. You will be a demon of this land."

Hotarubi didn't buy it. Wasn't it common that someone who was administering a test not going to admit it was a test? Distrust grew in him. So it was evident by the way that Hotarubi was now crossing his arms. His non-response was an easy way out. Kenji had, for what it was worth, coaxed Hotarubi from his deferent behaviour to who he was.

If that was true, then Hotarubi had entered a much more dangerous game by the actions he had been taking lately. He needed a break - feeling the stress between his shoulder bones. He was going to take a vacation real soon. "Eh?" Hotarubi had been paying some attention but then the man became affixed on Kenji. There was an offer to be had.

And it was something that he was not anticipating to hear: him on the throne? Well.. it had been something that Hotarubi had wanted. In truth: the man had not wanted to be the leader, but he wanted to be the strongest. Something swelled in his chest, a tightness - and yet, Kenji's own heart remained utterly still. Like they might as well had been talking about how balanced Kunai could be. But it seemed that Kenji wanted an answer immediately.

In truth, it was part Yamakira arrogance, part internal struggle that he recalled from a conversation with Tadashi. Desire swelled within him to control; to subjugate the weak.

Like the raven haired legend of Yore: he would make use of a strong teacher while it benefit him. Like he required from the academy, and then enjoyed it from his peers: then the Chunin exams. So if Kenji was going to offer training, then there was nothing harmful in that. Hotarubi was happy to get the lesson: was happy to make use of it. There was not yet trust there, but he did defer to the man.

A demon of the land? A certain glint twinkled in his eye as Hotarubi looked up. "When do we get started?" If nothing, Hotarubi could not be called vacant in his own desires. While the smartass in him wanted to correct the Hancho, tell him 'yeah good luck' in trying to make him bleed, he would not bite the hand that fed.

Kenji grinned at Hotarubi's resolve. He appreciated his calculation, his mindset. If nothing else, Hotarubi had always proven that he was his own person, and while he did what was best for the village, at least, mostly, his actions had shown time and again that hungered for strength.

The jonin narrowed his eyes, looking to his new student with almost malicious intent in his gaze.

"Now."

Kenji rolled his shoulders as he widened his stance, touching a finger to the leather strap at his wrist. It glowed with a hot, bright light, pulsing like a plume of magma. His hands opened as he dropped into a swordsman's stance, clearly one repeated many times as a large broadsword burst into the ground before him. Quickly, Kenji flashed a small series of hand seals, firing a barrage of small bolts of flame toward the Yamakira.

Without hesitation, Kenji would press forward, grabbing the sword from the ground and darting forward. The blade ignited in flame the second his fingers wrapped around its handle, radiating with powerful heat. With his forward momentum and the extreme weight of the sword, Kenji slashed his blade through the air aiming to cleave Hotarubi in two.

With their meeting concluded he would have to yet wonder if he had been caught in some plot larger than him and if Kenji was someone to be trusted, Hotarubi was mentally checking out for the evening. Except: he could not.

Hotarubi couldn't pretend that he hadn't been caught off guard by the man because he had anticipated that the conversation was coming to an end - and so he stepped back, raising an arm reflexively for the man to have already completed their technique.

So Hotarubi waved his hand: a wall would raise to defend himself against the technique. What Hotarubi had and what he wouldn't hold back in showing off was his ability to conjure some techniques without handseals. Taking a step back because what his experience told him was that Kenji was going to rush forward and cleave through the rock: and he didn't want to be cut up by it either since it was supposed to be a test: and would get started on the second technique as he manifested his doton outward into the area around him.

The yellow eyed Yamakira would subject them to the same space. After one had raised, all around them - both to Hotarubi and Kenji, trapping them in the same space together. Hotarubi had his sensory, but if their sight was gone then his own sensory abilities would help him prevail in the fight to come.

Hotarubi is a natural savant of the Yamakira hijutsu - comprised of a complex formulae from birth which turns individuals into stone, rock, dirt and everything between - and is able to compact that within him to increase his weight beyond normal human means which makes him more durable and harder to move, as well as an inability to be poisoned because of his non-human physiology. This form can be regenerated and as such it makes him 'functionally' immortal in the form, but is still exceptionally vulnerable to Suiton and water in general, as well as retaining the traditional weakness to Raiton.

As a natural prodigy of the Hijutsu, Hotarubi has mastered the boons of his Hijutsu which decreases the cost of high-ranking Doton Ninjutsu to minimal levels, less seals than most - and even in some cases, zero handseals at all (B-ranks and Low Handseals being formed without any handseals at all), that has rewarded Hotarubi with a capacity to simply 'will' techniques into existence, much to the fear of others about what he could become in the future.

Monstrous Strength
Hotarubi's weight has become effortless to him. Not only is he stronger, but he's also not slower - on account of the Yamakira physiology Hotarubi weighs a great deal more than your average person which makes him harder to move, hit and generally harm. As a result of that greater weight, his speed had dropped: so he focused on increasing his strength to where it no longer presents as an issue.

Not only is Hotarubi no longer burdened by this greater weight, he's also now generally much stronger. Even in his human form, his ability to grip, and cause blunt force trauma and crush rocks into dust with his hands is scary. He can hoist much bigger things than himself and his body weight around as if it were nothing, and generally makes him fearsome in all aspects of Taijutsu.

Combined with his Yamakira Hijutsu, and proportionate strength, it would not be out of the question for him to manoeuvre huge objects in the future.

Sensitive Touch
Having become truly attuned with the earth as a Yamakira, Hotarubi is almost naturally 'one' with the earth. Because of his specialised training he has learned to sense vibrations to a minute detail, retaining the ability to navigate and identify complex maps, traps and structures with ease, and enabling him to detect even hidden ninja through even their heartbeats and some conscious effort. While previously he was unable to 'perceive' things as a new sense, by now it has matured and is second hand to him to interpret and comprehend large amounts of new information to him.

With the use of chakra and focus, and by applying contact with the ground in some form (whether by feet or hand) he can sense even further out of his existing position. Because the active use requires chakra, unlike the passive which does not - it can still be affected by sensory jamming abilities.

Terraformer
As a Yamakira and one who has focused entirely on his Hijutsu than other Ninjutsu elements, Hotarubi has earned his spot amongst the ranks of Takigakure's feared by simply being superior to almost any being on the earth with Doton. His ability to mould his body and Doton techniques is unparalleled. Hotarubi can form his body into large, complex shapes with absolute efficiency and frightening speed to perform feats of Nintaijutsu.

This speed carries over into his Doton ninjutsu: they are extremely faster than regular Doton performed by others, and large scale ninjutsu are formed in half the time.

Chakra Reserves
If it weren't enough that Hotarubi has an unparalleled affinity for Doton ninjutsu, his capacity to endlessly perform techniques is massive as well, his chakra reserves rarely run dry because of his Hijutsu's unique benefits (See: Maisou no Jutsu). It directly translates to that Hotarubi can use even techniques ordinarily meant to 'exhaust' a Shinobi - causing him instead to break a sweat.

Double Down Doton
Elevating his Doton prowess to another level by his consistent focus and continued relationship with the element Hotarubi has become prodigal when using Doton. His doton jutsu are much more packed together - making them more durable and stronger against attacks as a whole, and reinforcing itself at a faster speed. While this does not apply to his own body techniques, nor does it enhance itself against Raiton, it makes even his lower ranked techniques excruciatingly difficult to break out of, or break with physical force, or non-raiton based elements.

Subjugate the Weak!

Hotarubi is capable of releasing a heavy presence around him comprised of Doton chakra - unlike regular chakra, this moulded Doton chakra exertion bares some of the characteristic of chakra conductivity and has physical weight that slows individuals down some and covering their entire bodies in a weighted blanket type of feeling. While not actually effective enough to slow someone down or meaningfully effect them in a battle, this can induce physiological/psychological changes in someone that would be akin to 'obey' or 'fear' Hotarubi.

(OOC: From an IC perspective, while roleplayers can choose their characters not to be affected, can also manifest itself as being a form of 'killing intent' that might paralyze some vulnerable or lower ranked Shinobi.)

The actual benefit by doing this is that Hotarubi becomes a sensor jammer: passively disabling sensors from knowing his true location without other senses, or by clouding his allies chakra signatures as well. More importantly, the 'half-active' feature of this means that Hotarubi is not always at the 'centre' of the radius: rendering some logical deduction difficult to his exact whereabouts.
