Shining Bright, She Is Like The Sun

Waiting There For Her Fate To Come

500 Words | | Notes: N/A

Many things had happened. For Akatsuki, it had felt like the world around her was falling apart. Everything she'd ever known had lost its meaning, the colors of the world around her had lost all of their brilliance, and any feeling of joy, belonging, or happiness that had once resided in her heart had long-since flickered out.

For quite some time, now, she had been wandering without any real rhyme or reason. There had been many moments when she'd considered giving up entirely--after all, there was no longer anything for her to live for. But still, purpose had found her. First, it was merely her sword. He had been a wonderful and beloved companion to her--and for the girl, it felt wrong to let him rot with her in a grave. He deserved better than that, even if it was only proper for her to keep him 'till death. It was her companion, and for that it felt wrong to abandon it, but neither did it seem right for a blade as magnificent as he was to never be put to use.

Then, there was also the matter of her religion. It was true that she was a Yōkai, and it was true that she held a notable position within her religion. Part of her responsibility was to perform the proper rites to whoever would next take up the mantle. She found comfort in knowing that her god would remember her when she eventually passed, but she knew, too, that it wasn't yet her time. She still needed to make sure that when she left the world behind, she left it in good hands.

It was irresponsible, otherwise.

And time passed. Wounds healed. They had left their marks, but after weeks and months had passed, the sting had subsided. Mostly. It would always hurt looking back at it, but not with the same intensity that it had, before. More like a bittersweet melancholy. And it was now, in these times, that Akatsuki wandered the world not with a goal in sight, but simply to experience it without a fear haunting her mind. Journeying the world as she tried to find healing and peace within it. And it was on this new search of hers that the young woman found herself returning once more to a small settlement that she'd visited once several months prior.

As she approached, she couldn't help but to wonder how things had changed--if they had changed much at all. She was still grateful to Kazutoshi for all he'd done for her, and while she didn't have much to offer, a part of her wished there was something she could do to repay his kind deeds. If nothing else, she wished to go back and visit him, just to see how he was faring. She hoped he'd be doing well. And, so, once she had arrived upon the settlement, the young woman approached the building she'd once taken refuge in and lightly knocked upon the door.

[attr="class","hotaruBody"]With the sealing of his memories, Hotaru had to put away the more heroic aspect of his first encounter with Akatsuki. Kazutoshi was not a shinobi, and wouldn’t have been capable of doing such things. Still, he left intact much of their interaction, letting his subconscious fill in the blanks. The person who had saved her had brought her to him for healing. He had kept her stable until his better could arrive to better heal her wounds.

Kazutoshi’s hospital and adjacent orphanage seemed much the same as it had been before, although perhaps slightly better tended to than it had ever been before. In resigning his ambition along with his memories, this place had become his life’s work. There were few children who had signs of malnourishment, save for those who had only just arrived. The sounds of play could be heard in the dusty yard of the orphanage which was divided from the hospital by a bridge.

Flower beds now adorned the outside of the hospital that were well tended to with wild flowers of violet, crimson, and white. When the door opened, a teenage boy with golden brown hair opened the door and directed her to go around to the back to find Kazutoshi in the garden.

Should Akatsuki have obliged she would have found the man in white seated before a small fountain. He had a small scroll rolled out onto a mat that had artistic scrawlings of little characters on them alongside simple letterings. Next to him was a small girl with pigtails that he was reading the words to. As she came around the corner he looked up for a moment and made eye contact with the woman, but continued reading as she walked up, hurriedly finishing the tale.

"And that is all for today,” he said to the girl as he rolled up the scroll and handed it to her. "Make sure to put this back in the library, okay?”

The girl nodded, looking up towards the woman and quickly scrambling across the garden to head towards the little bridge that would take her to the orphanage.

"It is good to see you are well,” Kazutoshi said with a warm smile. There was something different about him, he seemed to have less of his clinical dryness. His voice was pleasant and relaxed. "I was worried that you might have gotten into trouble again.”

Shining Bright, She Is Like The Sun

Waiting There For Her Fate To Come

632 Words | | Notes: N/A

Akatsuki took a moment to take in her surroundings as she waited for someone to answer the knock on the door, and she caught notice of the flowerbeds that had been planted nearby. A slight rouge tinted her cheeks as she recognized the color scheme among them--and couldn't help but to feel enamored by the detail.
    They were her colors.
It was... sweet. A rare, tender moment that she was unacquainted with. Many people paid her little mind, and even some of the people she held dearest to her heart were... well... she was replaceable, to them. Easily forgotten. A memory scattered to the wind. She had learned over the years that she cared about people far more than they usually cared about her, and while it was something she had made peace with... Was it so wrong to be happy that someone had held her memory dear to them? That she'd not been forgotten? It wasn't a gesture likely meant for her--Kazutoshi had no way to know if she would ever return to see him once more.
Which made it all that more endearing.
"Thank you," the young woman said politely to the boy who answered the door and guided her inside. It was a lively place with all the children running about, engaging in different activities. There was a certain life to the environment, and a shift in the energy. Perhaps she only noticed it now that she was well, and wasn't cooped up in a hospital bed while on the brink of death. Perhaps there had been a change while she was gone.
She followed the boy out to the garden, where the raven-haired man was preoccupied reading a story to a young girl. She smiled warmly to see him entranced in the moment, and when he looked up from what he was doing for a moment their eyes locked temporarily and his face lit up like a light. He wrapped up his activity quickly before shooing the child off for the time being, and Akatsuki approached where he was to greet him.
The young woman laughed lightly at what he said and shook her head at the mention of her finding trouble. In all fairness, she was quite skilled in finding trouble. But she was well and in good health, and while her mind had been in darker places, upon returning to the orphanage and seeing Kazutoshi wrapped up in his element... it lifted her spirits. More than she thought it would. She wasn't sure why... but she was happy to see him again. "Nothing I couldn't handle, thankfully," she replied with a cheeky grin. Her expression softened as she added, "I wanted to see you again. And I--well, I think I owe you a proper 'thank you' for saving my life. You've done me a great service, one that I could likely never repay, but..."
    She wanted to do something.
Akatsuki was unsure what. She didn't know what she could do for him. She was no medic, so she couldn't help him take care of the injured. But maybe she could learn, or assist in some other way. Fetch him the supplies he needed, and perform other errands around the hospital. She had nowhere to go, and the goal she'd been striving toward had been lost, so she had no purpose to live for that could hinder her. But Kazutoshi had given her life back to her, and she would never truly be able to repay him for his selflessness. But she could try. She wanted to at least try. She could spend the rest of her days trying to make it up to him, and even if it was an unattainable goal... still, she wanted to do whatever she could to make it up to him.
