[Kuishinbou Kuebiko]

It was not uncommon for Kuebiko to get assignments like this. He would often be asked to leave his post at the hospital to seek out missing shinobi. Perhaps a team would return without one of their members, stating they'd been attacked on the road home. Perhaps a shinobi would be out on a solo mission and never report back. In such instances, someone had to track them down. On the rare occasion, the shinobi had taken flight, wanting to leave the village, a bravery that Kuebiko himself could never have. On most occasions, the missing shinobi was injured or, worse, dead.

As he prepared for this trip, he hoped that the shinobi had just been turned around, lost. He had apparently been assigned on a mission near Ōtama, dealing with some wildlife that had become aggressive of late. It was possible he'd been injured in the course of duty and needed to hole up somewhere to hide from the wild animals.

Kuebiko received a small possession of the shinobi's from his family. It would help him catch the scent whenever they got close enough, act as a proper bloodhound for the search. With that in hand, he met with his partner for the mission and the two began on the road to Ōtama.

"...Do you think we should stop in the village and ask if they know which way our missing shinobi went?" Kuebiko inquired. Though they might lose some valuable time just asking about with people who may not know, it could also provide a good starting point if they were to get lucky.

To spare the man's nose Ichi had not taken his pipe from his yukata's sleeve pockets where he hid many of his implements alongside those he kept pouched on his arms. Sober as he was Ichi still displayed an unparalleled sense of calm for someone his age as he pondered what they knew of the missing shinobi. Which wasn't to say much for the bi-colored giant. His silver eyes neutrally looking into the distance as he reached out across nature for anything that was living; animals.

Pondering the experienced blonde's question before attempting to answer Ichi would smile as he nodded, "I think for the target's survival having any and all information we can find it will be more beneficial if we know more... Do you know the contents of the mission our charge was on Kuebiko-San?" Ichi asked his question ponderingly. Thinking more on the land, his time growing up on the Nakahara farms learning about the land made him ponder the most when it came to the locations of Nohara. Especially when they knew a direction there were only so many places in the country that one could travel towards afterall.

Having given his wisdom though, Ichi deferred the final decision to his senior, not arogant enough to think he knew all compared to someone clearly more experienced.

Ichi was born to the Nakahara clan on the night of a Harvest Moon. Born with quite the green thumb he was assumed to be an inheritor of the clan's natural talents with plants. The roots ran deeper, however, as Ichi was born with a Kekkai Genkai, being a rare natural occurance of Wood Release outside of the Senju. In learning of this he has trained his kekkai to the best of his abilities. He is no master, seeing as he has no reference of Mokuton, but he has found a way to bring out techniques along side his own talents in a cohesive manner.

Being roughly average for an individual, Ichi instead focused on the skills his birth clan preferred. Practicing his medical skills, he has gained a higher quality of Chakra Control. Ichi is much less likely to leak chakra than the average shinobi because of this.

Having practiced his skills with extending his senses outwards with the use of mokuton chakra, Ichi is particularly adept at sensing life in an area. Capable of finding life through the very nature around people. Within [20 meters] Ichi is capable of passively sensing out plant and animal life in a general sense. Able to differentiate it between plant and animal, but no further. Unlike chakra sensory Ichi can not more or less readily sense others based on their chakra, but instead purely senses the 'vitality' in things, though even those with seemingly boundless vitality will read the same as the elderly or a newborn to him. Also unlike usually sensory to actively search out individuals Ichi requires Mokuton, or the use of his pipe (though using it makes his position much easier to locate), as a catalyst to extend his senses, only going out as far as the technique's range, or twice his passive range in case of the pipe. It is also notable that the deceased, and those that feign death in some fashion, as through a poison or a jutsu, are completely invisible to Ichi. Notably the furthest he can extend his senses is [100 meters].

Ichi agreed that it would be wise to head to the village in search of more information on where the man had gone. He inquired if Kuebiko knew much about the mission that the shinobi had gone on and Kuebiko nodded a slight bit. He'd been given a minor report - apparently it had not been a particularly interesting mission, supposedly meant to be routine.

"He was on a mission to help clear out some wild animals that had been encroaching on the border of the town of late. Wolves who had been bothering travelers and merchants as they came in and out," he explained. That meant that if they could catch the trail of some wolves, they might be able to easily locate their missing shinobi.

Leading the way into the village, Kuebiko approached a group who appeared to be selling mushrooms near the fringes of its entrance. It seemed a reasonable place to start to him. If they cultivated mushrooms near the bloody forest, that meant they probably worked near the area where the wolves had been a problem, and their ally probably would have interviewed this group as well before beginning his hunt.

"Hello," Kuebiko greeted. "We wanted to inquire if you happened to have seen a shinobi pass through here recently."

The mushroom vendors looked at each other a moment, then nodded.

"Yes... A young man came through a few days ago promising to do away with those damnable wolves that have been bothering us. Haven't seen him since, though we've seen a couple wolves."

[attr="class","skullbody"]Ichi was lucky in that he could observe what he assumed to be a master at work. While he refused to disturb the man at work he would ponder the individuals. Like he had thought someone had an idea of where the man went, and Ichi would take in his fill of the cart the vendors had. They were wild mushrooms, the edible sort, but wild all the same. Puffball mushrooms weren't too rare to see inside of Nohara due to the fact that they were a native species on the land. Ichi loved the taste of them when they were seared in soy sauce personally. They made for good replacements to tofu in the winter as well.

Which is when Ichi would frown, the words of the vendors catching Ichi's attention. Where would they get a full cart of puffballs here specifically unless they travelled for days worth of time? That didn't make sense though since puffballs went bad fast... did he get lost in the- ah, yes, "Kuebiko-San. The mushroom forest, he has to be close by to the forest that might be why we haven't seen him."

Ichi would wait for his senior's reply, but the boy couldn't see a better direction to head. Why would one not return from fighting wolves at a chunin or jounin level even unless there was another factor... the dangerous mushroom forest made too much sense as to a why... unless the wolves truly got him.

On Ichi's speculation that the shinobi may have headed towards the mushroom forest, the merchant nodded, adding to the conversation,

"He did travel up north. Most of the wolves had been coming from that way, so I think he was looking for them around that area."

Wolves weren't the greatest frequenters of the area around the mushroom forest, considering animal life was not able to survive within, but there was still a possibility that they could linger around it hoping to steal scraps or even attack the workers who went up there to cultivate at its fringes. Ōtama was more a mining village than a farming one, but there were still those among them who spent their time scavenging the exterior - whatever mushrooms were within were unknown, considering entry was forbidden. It was a dangerous place with many poisonous spores. If the shinobi had the misfortune of being chased even near it on his expedition without the proper equipment, he could've become ill, preventing his return.

"Thank you for your help," Kuebiko said to the vendor, offering a small bow, before looking back to Ichi.

"Let's get moving. If he's near the mushroom forest, we don't have time to waste."

He would lead his teammate with him north towards the mushroom forest at a strict pace, though it still took a while yet to arrive. Even over half a mile out, the smell already started to sting his nostrils. The mushrooms themselves weren't especially pungent, but there was a smell like rot underlying that earthy scent. He would have to do his best to ignore it.

He smelled the pendant the family had given him and then sniffed the air. With active concentration, he thought, maybe... There was at least a similar scent continuing north. Not into the mushroom forest, thank goodness, but certainly skirting near it.

"I think he may be that way," Kuebiko offered. Perhaps Ichi might have a method by which to search more precisely as they moved in that direction.

Earnestly speaking such a thing was not anything close to good, but Ichi was not about to hesitate to move. Urging his long body to rush only a step behind Kuebiko as much as possible. To survive was before all other instinct, to allow others to survive was beyond self-preservation when it came to Ichi. He tried to impart this wisdom on everyone with his actions and words. His being lead to this philosophy in a grand fashion for that exact reason.

His sensory at this point would be more of a hinderance to him than help as they approached the massive mushroom 'woods'. An absolutely fascinating sight, but certainly not one that Ichi wanted to explore. It was off-limits for a reason, and as much as he wished to slide into the necessary gear and try and venture deep into the lands, he knew better than to take a grand adventure into the land of spores and death that stood just north of them. Instead he would listen as Kuebiko got them closer and closer to the missing shinobi. Praying that it was not too late for the poor chap who had been sent on this solo mission.

Soon enough, on the horizon, Kuebiko could see a dotting of trees. Regular ones, not the monumental mushroom "trees" that stood within the mushroom forest. They were odd, slightly warped things with bark that was softened by being downwind of the mushroom forest and its spores. The winds were relatively kind today, keeping the irritants out of the air - Kuebiko knew well that being exposed to a very small amount of the spores from this far away could cause irritation, though not be deadly. Prolonged exposure from being out here for weeks or years, though... The trees were very resilient to remain standing.

As the two began to approach the trees, even more shapes took form. There were a few slinking shapes near the ground level. Wolves, skinny and hungry. They'd come to this area and found no food. Merchants had been avoiding the area and their only hope was the other figure that became evident - a man in the tree. He wore the Kusagakure headband and traditional shinobi gear and had a deathly pallor. He seemed extremely, extremely sick.

The wolves were clearly biding their time, waiting for him to die and fall from the tree so they could stave off their starvation. In this way it was a standoff between the man and the wolves. No wonder he'd been trapped there. Each had been waiting for the other to give up.

"...They'll notice us if we get close," he said. Wolves weren't the type of creature you sneak up on unless you excelled in that area.

"If I cast a genjutsu to disorient them, do you think you can hold them off long enough for me to retrieve him?"

[attr="class","skullbody"]Ichi was led to a rather awkward location for he himself to try and take a role... wolves were a pain to the pacifist after all. Ichi was no fighter, and he never had been one. It was not in the nature of his clan, nor the ways his parents had raised him to view the world. That was not to mean that he was useless though... with his barriers he could probably hold back a few wolves... though how was going to likely complicate this entire operation....by a lot. It was probably to dangerous to use his drunken pollen for that exact reason... so he needed a different ploy.

Judging the land ahead like his father had taught him to judge how far out you needed to plow a line to the field, Ichi tried to eyeball about 200 meters. Turning to Kuebiko he would speak as he started to form handseals, "I can handle the wolves, or at least disorient them long enough for us to begin moving the man away, but your going to need to start moving... any help you can provide to messing up the wolves the better... I don't really carry a lot in the realm of dangerous techniques, but I can likely trap them for long enough for you to get there and get back if that's some thing you can manage Kuebiko-San."

Finishing the last seal Ichi moved forward just a bit and placed a palm to the earth as the grass started to turn a more vibrant green and Ichi's barrier thickened the quantity of grass. A second set of weaved seals starting only a moment later.

Ichi confirmed that he would be able to help hold off the wolves, ready to aid him as he moved in for the rescue. Neither of them were especially combat-focused individuals, instead playing more of a support role in their own right. They were more here to retrieve the injured shinobi than they were to truly dispatch of the wolves, though Kuebiko would if he absolutely had to to see things through to the end. Though he hated to hurt an animal, he valued human life more. Hopefully they could just confuse and bar the wolves and beat a good, clean escape.

"I'll move in, then," he confirmed, nodding his agreement. He drew a kunai, just in case he needed it, holding the handle tight against his palm as he took off towards the wolves. Quickly, he was within a range that they had noticed him. They turned their attentions away from the tree and towards Kuebiko, snarling, licking their lips. There was a distinct desperate hunger in those eyes that unsettled Kuebiko greatly. He brought his hand to his mouth and let out a shrill whistle, coating the sound with chakra to impact the front-most wolf. Fighting Confused - a technique which utilized sound to target the inner ear and disturb the brain's vestibular interpretation.

It had the wanted effect. The first wolf of the group stumbled over itself, falling over and making distressed growls as it struggled to comprehend what was happening, trying to right itself.

That left three other wolves in need of interception.

Ichi would be moving with the second set of seals created from his work and land only a dozen or two meters from the wolves whistling before pressing a palm to the ground and urging it to expand. Raising into the sky from around him moving outward. Ichi attempting his best to trap the wolves in the odd hard to move in grass that he had formed. Knowing the locations of the one's in his grassy field he would smile.

They were trying to surround him, but that wouldn't work when they could barely move faster than he, and without the full information that Ichi could provide for the group. His scent didn't blend like it would have in his Autumn Rain, but it was still subtle for a creature that relied on scent to find him if it was not for the superhuman levels of strength to Kuebiko and the wolves noses. Ichi slowly backing his way from the imprisoning grass that his barriers had created. It was a simple way for the young man to try and distract. After all, what was one to do when disoriented even by the shadows of the meadow.

Ichi was born to the Nakahara clan on the night of a Harvest Moon. Born with quite the green thumb he was assumed to be an inheritor of the clan's natural talents with plants. The roots ran deeper, however, as Ichi was born with a Kekkai Genkai, being a rare natural occurance of Wood Release outside of the Senju. In learning of this he has trained his kekkai to the best of his abilities. He is no master, seeing as he has no reference of Mokuton, but he has found a way to bring out techniques along side his own talents in a cohesive manner.

Capable of finding life through the very nature around people. Within [20 meters] Ichi is capable of passively sensing out plant and animal life in a general sense. [Kuishinbou Kuebiko]

The grass grew beneath the combatants, helping to snare and slow the movements of the wolves. Kuebiko was able to avoid the slowing impact by jumping from the ground, using the tree walking technique to cling to the sides of nearby trees. One of the wolves took a leap, attempting to get a bite of out Kuebiko while it still had the opportunity, before he moved too high into the trees for it to get at.

With a surprising degree of success, it managed to go for an arm. Kuebiko used his kunai to jab the beast in the mouth. Eyes and mouths were points of incredible pain, which made creatures want to back off and reassess their positions whenever attacked. Mouth wounds were very easily infected, and could be deadly to a creature, so pain there was a great deterrent and despite its hunger, the wolf was quick to let go once it had been stabbed, falling back to the ground, where the thickened grass would make a second attempt at such a leap impossible.

Reaching the higher points of the trees, Kuebiko was able to get to the sickened shinobi now.

"I'm glad to see you're still breathing," Kuebiko greeted, in a hushed tone. The man's breathing was labored, but he was conscious - a good sign. "What happened?"

"I was fighting off the wolves when one managed to get at my ankle. I climbed up here to try to take care of it when the wind carried spores from the forest over... I haven't felt well since. My head... I'm not sure if I can run."

"We can get you out of here and then get you back in proper shape. Here, get on my back for now." He could remove the poison, but he had no pain relief here. It would be very dangerous to perform such a procedure in the treetop.

Positioning the man on his back, he considered his exit angle now. How would he and Ichi get him out of here?

These wolves weren't super stupid, but they were just as restricted as he needed them to be. Another three seals and to his companions vision Ichi would step into view... literally. Creating a chain of nigh visibly translucent green stairs on the ground. And then climbing across the as they alternated in the air until he reached Kuebiko a grin on his face.

"Its not as powerful as its advanced brother, and I can only maintain four steps, but that should get us far enough away... but the faster the better. This takes more chakra than it may look like," Ichi would state for the Kuishinbou and his carried charge. Ichi could sense the weakened life force in the man and knew that they didn't have a lot of time really so he started concentrating on creating the stairway to safety. To survival. Ichi was rather proud of his actual limbo of skills working, still knowing the wolves condition as they searched the spot he had been. They would notice sooner or later the way to go, but he had bought them at least a few minutes.

[Kuishinbou Kuebiko]

Utilizing his barrier techniques, Ichi ascended up to the top of the tree, offering Kuebiko and the shinobi he carried a way down. Kuebiko stepped forward onto the translucent green stair, somewhat hesitant. Even though he was relatively familiar with barrier techniques and knew they could be trusted, the sorts that formed into stairs always made him slightly more nervous. Being suspended in the air only with chakra was a lot of trust to put in another person. Ichi was competent, though, and Kuebiko started down the stairs.

On the descent, Kuebiko released the single wolf from his earlier genjutsu so that he could prepare for another if necessary. For now, keeping his attention and chakra dedicated to that when they were out of range of the wolves seemed like a waste. Kuebiko was quick to make his way down those stairs, not wanting Ichi to have to exert more chakra than necessary on the descent.

At the bottom of the stairs, Kuebiko is quick to start making way away from the wolves and the mushroom forest. If they could make good distance before the creatures could even recognize their absence, it would guarantee they were less likely to be pursued. The wolves might follow for a short while, but the more distance they had, the more dissuaded the creatures would be. Once they were out clean, they could send another group to dispatch the wolves, maybe with filters in tow to avoid a repeat of this incident.

[attr="class","skullbody"]After a time of travel on the stairs Ichi would lower them to the ground, it would be faster to travel by land downhill after all. He honestly felt exhausted from chakra use, but it wasn't like he was empty. No, rather it was the constant manipulation and forming of barrier after barrier to abuse the natural composition of his techique to alternate slight descent and ascent as to not disturb the charge that his partner on the mission, Kuebiko, carried with them. The dude was worse for wear and Ichi honestlyt didn't have a lot of faith that he would be okay unless he got help very soon.

Luckily the town had only been about twenty minutes south, and while slower in travel they had crossed some of that distance already. Ichi had made sure to route them to town, and when they reached it he would be acting as a runner back to the village. Someone needed to get an actual team out here that could do more than a barrier expert and a medic of all odd duos to send on such an absurd task.

Pushing into the town proper Ichi would nod a calm smile to Kuebiko and pull out his pipe as he formed a single handseal and disappeared towards Kusagakure. Heading to grab help for the wolves that would surely still be nearby.

Sure enough, the duo were able to make it out of the wilderness back into town, guided by Ichi's use of protective barriers to keep them out of the wolves' grasp. Once they were on the ground again, they were able to beat an even hastier retreat, outpacing the wolves. The two had done their duty, discovering the position of the wounded shinobi and bringing him home. Kuebiko was glad that they'd managed to mostly avoid combat. He hated to kill any creature, even ones so troublesome as those wolves.

On arrival back to the town, he asked Ichi to make way back to Kusagakure to call for forces to deal with the wolves while he remained in Ōtama to stabilize the rescued man's condition.

After washing his own wound and patching up his wounded arm, he was able to set to work. First he gave the man a painkiller sourced from the residents of the town, then utilized his water mosquitos to extract as much of the toxins that had been broken down in his bloodstream as possible. This was not a pleasant process, but when all was over, the man seemed further from death than he had when the shinobi had retrieved him.

With that taken care of, Kuebiko was able to take care of treating his wounded ankle. The two would wait in Ōtama for two days while the man recovered, long enough for the second team to arrive and for Kuebiko to given them information on where to find the wolves. Then Kuebiko transported the rescued shinobi home.
