"It's about time, things were really starting to get lame around town...", the Chūnin exhaled as his right pinky finger twisted into his right eardrum, digging for presumably gold. The location was a sailboat currently en route to a small piece of rock known as Ushinata Island, with a paid seafarer at it's helm and two passengers in the rear, one known as Sai Shō and the other Kuronmeru Keiji. This being their first mission together, the two shinobi did not have much of a chance to interact and build rapport up to this point, and due to the one they called the "Bloodhound" being both his Operations Team 1 and Tenshukaku Hogo leader, Shō hoped he would be able to utilize this opportunity to impress him.[break][break]

"We are nearing the island port, gather your belongings and brace yourselves..." The seafarer was a scantily old man, but looks clearly could be deceiving, as he appeared to be an expert in this line of work, barely showing fatigue from the venture across the waters. Shō raised a hand over his eyes as he squinted hard, trying to determine what he could see in the distance. Unfortunately, the island read like any other island in the Land of Water; lush greenery strewn from coast to coast with buildings being visible here and there in between. Since becoming a Seki Shikan (gate officer) for the secret maximum-security prison, the Silver Horn's ability to take missions had dwindled significantly, hence his comment about how bored he had become earlier.[break][break]

While the destination seemed ordinary, the mission was everything but. The Operations Team 1 had been assigned with investigating an unusual pattern of children disappearing on Ushinata Island, which had spooked and been called out by one of the merchants that had just moved there. Whether it was coordinated tomfoolery on behalf of the adolescents or something really sinister going on, it was their duty to acquire as much information as they can, and if they could, return the children to their parents. As the raft was mere minutes from docking, Shō double-checked his inventory, which consisted of his greatsword, a wireless radio, and various other useful ninja tools. Whatever that was in store for them, he was prepared.[break][break]

Keiji had spent most of the voyage thus far in relative silence, not for preference but rather to get a read on his new charge. Any unnerving as a result would have been a nice little bonus, though it seemed to not have bothered Shō all that much. To Keiji, he appeared more comfortable with the quiet than most of the brash young shinobi he'd met.

He'd been wearing a slight smile the whole ride, unwavering as he alternated glances at the Chūnin and at the open seas. The helmsman had seemingly escaped his attention - Keiji'd only given him a brief visual inspection when they'd boarded, then put him out of mind.

As they docked at Ushinata island, Keiji rose to his feet with a cat-like stretch. The light breeze set his sleeves fluttering as he locked his fingers and twisted, cracking his knuckles. He was wearing a dark blue kimono, with grey hakama bottoms. There was a tanto tucked into the fold of his top, alongside some bandages and a dingy little radio that he'd only brought to stay in contact with Shō in case of emergency. Many thought his 'lack of preparation' foolish, though he merely preferred to rely on his own power.

With a content sigh, he gave up the reserved act and took a large whiff of the salty island air. "Come on then, Sai." he said lightly. "We'll try to keep things from getting lame."

He dismissively concluded their business with the helmsman, then led Shō up a small hill. Upon its crest sat a wooden building - hardly more than shack, in truth - that served as a bar and store for local fishermen. Keiji stood aside and held up the noren that covered the entrance, ushering the Chūnin in.

The inside was fairly empty: most of the fishermen had been out on the seas for hours by now. Old men, long gone past their prime, sat telling each other tall tales. The owner stood behind the counter, finishing his daily chores. His head perked up when he saw the two shinobi enter. He hailed them over.

"Seems he knew we were coming," Keiji said. "Why don't you take the lead here? I want to see how you do." He led them up to the bar, glancing at the other customers as they approached. No doubt there'd be a good bit of information to be had from the patrons, but he wanted to see what the Chūnin could suss out on his own. A preliminary test.

Once the boat finally came to a halt at the dock, Shō felt a sudden shock of anxiety, since there was still an air of unfamiliarity with Keiji, and he feared the worst possible outcome would be him somehow making a complete fool out of himself on the mission. But just like the breeze, the feeling came and went once Keiji encouraged them to step forward, Shō responding with a nod and a slightly unnerving smirk.[break][break]

Nothing seemed unusual as they began their ascent to the wooden cabin. For the brief hike, the Chūnin walked at his supervisor's rear-left, out of respect, his head again shifting from left to right as if danger lurked in the brush. Unfortunately, danger never came, and they proceeded to walk inside to find several old men drinking and slacking about. Immediately, Shō already hated the atmosphere, but he didn't have too much time to relish in his disdain as a man standing behind the bar waved them over.[break][break]

"No offense, but you two don't look like from you're from here," the old man noted, his eyes quickly scanning them before they finally locked onto Shō's Mist headband, which was wrapped around his left bicep, "and if I had to guess, you must've come to find those kids that have gone missing." Prior to responding to the elderly man's request to join him at the bar, Keiji had just given Shō the green light to spearhead the mission for the time being, so with that in mind he decided to speak up first.[break][break]

"*Ahem*," he cleared this throat, as if to swallow whatever nerves he had, "That's right old geezer, we are both shinobi from the Mist Village. You know who submitted the request?" The Silver Horn's oblivious cheekiness reared his ugly head again, as the old man folded his arms and his face became slightly irked. "First off, the name's Shige, not 'old geezer' little guppie, and the person you're looking for is me." Reaching beneath the counter that separated them, Shige withdrew two cups and started shuffling from one spot to the next.[break][break]

"We can talk more about it, but first, after crossing those long waters, you both must be parched." Shige decidedly clapped his hands and they started to dance gracefully with several bottles of liquid. Together he mixed a delicate amount of cherry liqueur and whiskey, then topped them off with an equal serving of a sweet and sour juice, then pushed one of each chalice toward the shinobi. The young Chūnin eyed it for a second, wondering what type of concoction it was, his nostrils breathing in it's aroma. Initially, he was off-put by the marginally pungent scent of alcohol, but the fruitful additions were too delightful to turn down, and so he took his drink in hand and began sipping.[break][break]

"We call this the Fisherman's Delight around here, and don't worry, it's on the house."

Old geezer, Keiji thought with a mental smirk. He does look a little past his expiration date, doesn't he? Keiji stifled a yawn in his elbow. There'd be time enough for fun later, he tried to remind himself.

Something decidedly less amusing was pushed his way. He squinted into the cup that had been proffered to him. A disgusting mix of flavors. Something more akin to a diabolical academy student's admixture, he thought.

"Delightful." he said with an exaggerated fake smile, not attempting to conceal his disdain. Keiji didn't drink - it dulled his senses. Didn't help that it tasted like shit, even in the best of times.

Yet he tilted his head anyway and drunk the whole thing. As expected, it was foul - but he targeted the alcohol as it entered his blood stream and broke it down before it could take effect. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes, not just at the flagrant waste of chakra but also at the absurdity of the situation.

'Simple' people like these tended to be prone to warped niceties like this. His reservations about the quality of these people were mostly unconscious: he was still a Kuronmeru after all.

"The kids." he stated bluntly. "Wouldn't want to intrude on your busy day. We're quite busy ourselves." The man's bar, of course, wasn't busy. His blunt words were less so for the bartender and more for his charge, as if to admonish him for not getting to the point with his introduction.

"Blegh...", Shō thought to himself, after taking his first couple sips of the fruity cocktail. He was quite surprised the old man would offer him such a drink when he was clearly still a youngster, but the barkeep's philosophy on the matter was simple: if you're old enough to enlist, you're old enough to partake. Initially, he could only tolerate small quantities of the concoction, until he glanced over and noticed Keiji had already finished his own. Not wanting to appear that he couldn't keep up with his senior, Shō threw his head back and guzzled the rest of the liquid in one large swallow, several shivers tingling up an down his spine after he did so.[break][break]

"Attaboy!", the merchant cheered as he watched the teenager endure the pain. Shō wasn't given much time to recoup however, as Keiji made it sternly clear he was ready to press on with why they were here in the first place. After sticking his tongue out in disgust, Shō heeded Keiji's words and nodded, agreeing himself that he didn't want his time wasted any longer either. "Hmmmm, right...", the old man conceded, folding his arms as he turned his gaze back to the Kuronmeru. His face, which was just elated a few moments ago, was now serious and ridden with concern.[break][break]

"It all started a few weeks ago, when the Nakajima and Matsui kids ended up disappearing. At first, we thought the little ones were just horsing around, until the night turned to day and then to night again and the kids were still nowhere to be found." Shige paused, shaking his head as he continued on. "Their parents eventually went out to try and find them...but this land, it is still so vast, tortuous, and very much foreign to us new settlers. It took days before the parents ended up returning, and they said they had became lost themselves." [break][break]

A sigh exhaled from his mouth, as a feeling of uselessness overcame him. "I wish I could help find them, but a lot of us merchants are too old and can't endure dealing with Ushinata's jungle. Since then, a handful more kids have vanished, and parents here at the shore of the island are starting to think this little piece of rock is actually cursed... but I have other suspicions." Shō raised an eyebrow at Shige's last comment, puzzled by what he meant exactly. "Wait... you know something else, something interesting... let's hear it, old man."[break][break]

The barkeeper grunted, but rather than to correct Shō once more, he simply ignored it and answered his request. "Ushinata Island wasn't uninhabited before we crashed ashore. In far stretches of the archipelago, there are indigenous people who are native to here; some have made their distaste for our settlement blatantly known, while others have seemingly pretended to welcome it." Yet again, Shige interrupted his story momentarily as he began pouring his own flask.[break][break]

"The one I'm speaking of... we call her 'Yamauba', or 'the mother of the forest'. She is an Ushinata native and a strange old woman. She randomly appears here and there, claiming to want to trade her bizarre inventions to us... but I've witnessed on a few times myself that Yamauba likes to interact with the immigrant children, and because of that, something in my gut tells me she just might be behind all this."

"The old woman, then." Keiji gripped the counter and turned around, scanning the patrons before returning his gaze to the bartender. "Know where we can find someone who knows this jungle?"

The bartender, Shige, tilted his head at them for a moment. He looked them up and down, then began wiping the counter down. "Well..." he stalled. "Out with it." Keiji commanded. "It's just... no one's really supposed to go there, but... I suppose you two look like you can handle yourselves."

Shige somewhat reluctantly gave them instructions that led them outside and down the hill. They were to follow the coast until they arrived at a section of cleared trees: the home of a lumberjack and forester, a half-native man named Ryo. "He'll show you where to go."

The two shinobi stepped outside. Keiji lifted his hand up and surveyed the surroundings, finding a sandy path that led down to the beach. "Well Shō, you heard the man's directions. Let's head north." He motioned a hand down to the beach. "Lead the way. I've gotta know if I can trust you not to lose your way." he laughed, only half-joking.

An old woman... Serial killer? Leader of a small gang? Perhaps things were getting interesting.

The mention of delving into a forbidden place sounded like fun in Shō's opinion, his eyes widening as the barkeeper rambled on about where this "Yamauba" might be located. A devilish smirk crept across his face, as he hadn't really felt any true excitement in a while, so he was surely glad that he was selected for this particular mission. The conversation didn't last too much longer though, as Keiji expedited Shige's little story and finally got to the meat of what they needed to start their investigation.[break][break]

"We'll find those kids, you can bet your bottom buck on that, old man.", Shō asserted, as they exited the tavern and began their journey down a heavily-used path of dirt that eventually led to a shore-side beach. Keiji once more gave Shō the reigns, which was smart on his behalf because the Silver Horn was actually quite a skilled tracker due to his excellent sense of smell. "Me, getting lost? Rest assured, that ain't gonna happen, chief!"[break][break]

After a lengthy walk alongside the beautiful oceanfront view, they were instructed to stop at a cleared section of trees, where a cabin and an extinguished campfire existed amongst them. Shō's hair-covered eyes scanned the area for the lumberjack or anything strange, and he even gave a sniff or two, but nothing really stood out to him except the smouldered fumes. Wasting no time, the Chūnin walked right up to the door, and just as he was milliseconds from knocking, it had swung open, and from it exited a tall, bulky man, who was drenched in tribal distinctions.[break][break]

"Who are you...?", the native man queried, slight annoyance riddling his face. In his left hand he gripped a woodsman's axe, and that alone was evidence that the Mist Shinobi might've found the man Shige spoke of. "Y-You must be Ryo...", Shō sputtered, a single eyebrow twitching from nervousness as the man stood at least a foot over him. "The old geezer at the bar told us to come here, that you would know where to find the 'Yabamba'."[break][break]

Ryo squinted, shifting his gaze from Shō to Keiji and back to Shō, before he finally gave his answer. "Hm. Well, if Shige sent you, then it must be about those missing kids." The hulking native closed his door and walked out into the open, turning his attention back to the two visitors. "I can steer you in the right direction, but I hope you came prepared, as Ushinata's backwoods can be quite unforgiving."

"Unforgiving?" Keiji scoffed playfully. "What're you keeping back there?" he asked while nodding at the treeline. No doubt these islanders, especially the tribal ones, entertained such tripe as stories of cannibals and spiritual punishment.

"Let me guess: monsters, spirits, ghosts," other such religious nonsense, he thought. " and the like." Keiji didn't hold much respect for folk traditions or other things he saw as superstition. The world was a logical place. The only thing illogical was the human mind - such as his own.

Ryo looked him up and down, shaking his head slightly. "I thought the Shinobi would hold more respect for people." Keiji laughed. "It's a job." he said callously. "Yours is to tell us -" he gestured to himself and Sho. "- where we can find those kids."

Despite being less eager to help now, Ryo still showed them the way. He led them into the forest a ways, until they came to a large mossy rock that sat in a clearing. Ryo lifted up some leaf cover that he'd set set down. Underneath was a set of tracks, human footprints.

Ryo stood off to the side, telling Sho about the dangers he had mentioned as Keiji bent down and got to work inspecting the tracks: their numbers, the size of the prints, and the direction they were heading in.

The woodsman hesitated at first, skeptical of the Mist shinobi's true intentions, but Keiji's words reassured them they were there strictly for business, even if they came across somewhat harsh. The trio exited the clearing and delved into the thick of Ushinata's forest, Shō unsheathing his greatsword to cut away at whatever foliage stood in his way, also keeping his eyes peeled for clues and other marks of interest.[break][break]

The thick treetops finally began to let cracks of sunlight through more and more before they finally came to another open space, where a rock covered in moss stood in the middle of it. "Here, please take the time to inspect this. I discovered these tracks just this morning. I'm assuming one of you have some ability to make use of it." While Keiji inspected the footprints, Shō's nostrils picked up various scents that stretched out in all directions from them; some were human, and some were animal.[break][break]

However, he couldn't narrow down which of the many scents to pursue without gathering more information. Ryo waited and gave them a bit of time to ask any further questions before he bid them farewell. "I cannot take you any further, as I am forbidden from returning to my people. I leave you with this, Ushinata and it's native people are protected by many animals and mechanisms of the forest. While she herself is not a threat, the Yamauba will not be easy to find."[break][break]

Ryo disappeared back into the greenery as Shō and Keiji contemplated their next move. "Yeah yeah, he can try and spook us all he wants, but there's nothing the wild can hide from me!", the Chūnin pronounced, noticing the direction of the footprints and and following them toward the brush. Immediately upon nearing the dense thicket, Shō caught a waft of blood, and and his eyes met with a sharp, extended piece of branch that had a piece of cloth hanging from it.[break][break]

The cloth indeed had dried blood on it, and appeared to be unintentionally torn off. "This looks like it belonged to a human boss, and the blood on it doesn't look that old either... " Shō's intuition led him to believe that with this new finding, he had found their next route. Uncertainty reared it's face, and he turned to observe Keiji's response to the discovery. "You think we shou-", he stopped himself, remembering that he was being evaluated on his ability to take charge of the mission, "...I mean, we should definitely head in this direction," he nodded with assurance, "I have a pretty good nose, we can use this piece of cloth to help lead the way."

     "Good," he stated while standing up and slipping his arms into his kimono. He'd found usable tracks in the dirt, but Shō's discovery was much more likely to give them a usable trail. The boy's enhanced sense of smell seemed quite handy. Keiji could mimic it himself, if need be, but having it be innate was no doubt a boon to the Chuunin.

     It was hard to imagine there would be altogether too much drama on their way, Keiji thought. Most of this superstition was no doubt bullshit. It was the kind of drivel these peasants were prone to believing in.

     "Lead the way then, Shō." he said while nodding his head. Keiji decided he'd just follow behind, take the path that he cleared. This mission seemed to be quite an easy one for him. He hoped there would be some action later, it was awfully boring thus far.

     The pair made their way through the jungle, Shō sniffing and clearing the brush and Keiji simply following behind. As they went, Keiji interrupted the relative silence with a question. "Tell me about your family, Shō. You're not from a clan, are you?" Keiji already knew this, of course, but it was his meager way of building rapport.

Shō's eyes danced from side to side as he pushed the thick troves of branches out of his way, following the scent through the greenery like a bloodhound. The discovery of the torn clothing certainly meant that someone was in danger, which caused him to become slightly nervous once again, beads of sweat rolling down the edge of his face. Luckily for him however, Keiji was stationed as his rear, and thus the jitters that were coming over him wouldn't be so easily noticeable to the squad leader. Could the injured person be at the mercy of some freakishly powerful monster? Could it be some kind of mythical creature? Could this be exactly what Ryo had warned them about?[break][break]

His mind wandered back and forth between staying on track and fearing what lurked in the forest, until Keiji's inquiry into Shō's family history broke his concentration. "Huh?... oh, my family...", he replied weakly, seeing as this was a sore topic for him. He hesitated to answer the question and remained silent momentarily, as he thought it wasn't the right time nor place, but he figured that it must've been of some value to Keiji, since they hadn't really spoken too much about anything personal just yet. The volume in his voice still meager, he began to speak again, but it would probably come across broken and muffled since he was projecting away from the Joūnin.[break][break]

"Yes... well, no... I don't know...", he shook his head, still unsure if whether his adoptive father still didn't consider him family. "It's... complicated. My father is from the Sourei Clan... and my mother is from the Sai Clan... but I'm not really a part of either one of them. You see, the truth is-"[break][break]

"GAAAH! GET AWAY! SOMEBODY HELP!"

The Chūnin froze as the faint scream of an older man echoed from quite a distance from their position. Shō swallowed as his concerns were confirmed, that there was something threatening in these woods. His initial reaction was despair, but with Keiji watching his every movement, he would have to find a way to shake it off. Instead, he replaced the anxiety with excitement, convincing himself that things were indeed starting to get interesting, and he wasn't going to let the opportunity elude him.[break][break]

"This way, Keiji-san!", he announced, picking up his feet and bolting toward the direction of the outcry. With the blood odor growing even stronger now, Shō's ability to isolate the source of his targets became easier and easier as he hurried through the timber, glancing back every now and then to make sure he wasn't outpacing the Kuronmeru. After a few minutes of expedited flight, they finally came into another clearing, but this time, they were not alone.[break][break]

Immediately, Shō first witnessed a large grizzly bear about 13 meters away at his 11 o'clock position, standing on all fours as it paced back and forth and roared hungrily. On the other hand, at the same distance but at his 1 o'clock position was a man who was panicking and waving a stick at the creature, and a woman directly behind him who appeared to have her foot caught in a bear trap. Shō gripped his greatsword on his back as he assessed the situation and the best course of action. "Hey fluffy, over here!", he yelled toward the grizzly, making his presence known and capturing the beast's attention. "Why don't you pick on someone your own size?!"

     Keiji saw the bear and immediately slid to a halt. The civilians could wait: besides, they weren't a part of the mission. Keiji wasn't going the risk the effectiveness of his attack to save them.

     He hoped the missing children would be nearby - perhaps in hiding in the brush. He didn't want to waste any more time on this mission - it was dragging long enough already. Perhaps it'd be too much to hope for an easy resolution, but he didn't mind getting an earful about failure or anything - so long as he could get back to Kirigakure and be off this god-forsaken island.

     He attempted to get the bear's attention, ideally waiting for it to charge at him, then he weaved four handseals and slammed his hands down on the forest floor. From the earth, a large wall shot up in between himself and the bear - hopefully they'd collide.

     With the wall fully formed, Keiji leapt and launched himself off one corner of the construct. Landing across the clearing he weaved more handseals, then released a stream of razor-sharp Fuuton blades of wind at the bear, hoping they'd be strong enough to pierce his hide. He wasn't immensely concerned about ricochet.

The mission was definitely running amuck in some regard especially with the sudden bear attack. Sho ran towards the civilians and the Keiji reacted to the bear that indeed charged the two quickly. Though it was just a very regular bear so it wasn't thinking much with its head. It had gotten freaked out to some degree and was fully charging head first... Right into the wall before the blades of fuuton attacked it. It let out a roar of pain, trying to get away from it but being unable to do so. It had a thick pelt though, which meant it did not immediately die.

But things were about to get really more complicated. Because out of nowhere kids came running towards both Sho and Keiji screaming really loudly in fear of what was happening.

"THEY DID IT! THEY DID IT! HELP US!"

They were putting towards the man and woman who were originally being cornered by the bear. Which was really just a strange twist of fate that these two would be the potential kidnappers of two children.

Of course this meant that now Keiji had to try and really put the bear down or risk the kids getting hurt by it since it was still teetering around and trying to attack Sho it seemed... Though not very effectively.

     Conserving his chakra didn't seem of a concern to Keiji anymore - they had the children in tow, and in fact, so long as they could escape to the coast they didn't even really need to kill the bear. He was feeling charitable though.

     Weaving the handseals, Keiji created 3 shadow clones - a hefty number for someone without a larger chakra pool, but not so many as to be debilitating. The bear seemed to be on the backfoot - literally - and it seemed sharp melee attacks had the best chance of puncturing its hides.

     Keiji and the clones rushed in to aid Sho, shoving the children back and out of the way. The real Keiji pulled his tanto out, while the clones coated their arms in sharp Doton using the Spear jutsu. The four of them closed in, the real Keiji attempting to drive his Tanto into the bear's spine, while the other 3 tried to stab into its heart and neck.

     Hopefully the onslaught of attacks from the clones, Keiji, and Sho, would overwhelm the bear's defenses - if not, Keiji was fully prepared to leap back and quickly grab the children and escape to the coast. They, no one else, were the stated object of the mission - everything and everyone else was secondary. He'd do his best to save Sho, as well though - the Kage'd give him more than an earful for letting a Chuunin die under his watch.

The bear, being a mostly ordinary bear, was not a huge threat despite it's great and thick pelt against the attacks of a more seasoned shinobi like Keiji who in his second onslaught would manage to give the bear some unintentional mercy and put him down entirely. The new set of attacks this time seemed to work though with Keiji pushing the kids aside they kind of fell over clumsily in their run up to the two shinobi...

They seemed to have at least recognized that they had headbands on and were probably safe to be around to get away from the horrible man and woman that had been attacked by the bear in the moment.

Now, though with a dead bear... Keiji had to figure out whether they would be escaping with the children towards the coast and getting back to the village or if he should kill the man and woman too to try and make certain that this would not happen again.

Either way, the integrity of the mission was more or less secured. The kidnapped children were in tow, or at least two of them were, and there was some modicum of understanding of what had happened if it was not ENTIRELY clear from the winding investigation.
