The Heiress of the Hyuuga clan, and the deadbeat of the Uchiha clan. Such a match was really made in heaven. Perhaps it was poor fate that they were trapped in a team together. Or perhaps they were both so equally both disappointments and prodigies of each others clans that they ended up working out well together.

Which is why they were here now, with Kai doing a bit of training with a new tool he had yet to really explore in depth. Sharing the secret that he had his first tomoe wasn't something he gave up easily- Indeed, even people he found very close he rarely shared it with. That said... Someone as close as his teammate, and the heiress of their respective clan...

Well, it'd be fortuitous to practice his fighting with them properly. So, here they were, hidden in one of the nameless compounds, away from prying eyes. On one side, the Uchiha, who had crafted a 'glaive cozy' as to be able to use his weapon without actually maiming his opponent, and clad in heavy, thick armor to take the bone breaking punches of his opponent- And the other, presumably, the Hyuuga, ready to kick his butt.

"Just so you know. I haven't exactly had a lot of time to practice with this. So don't worry about going all out- As long as you don't kill me." He quietly explained, as his eyes both turned a deep red, 1 tomoe burning into his iris. Enhanced. Ready. Weapon forward.

Practice began now. Simple, right...?

Raika herself needed to do some pretty serious physical Taijutsu training of her own, so an agreement to do some of that training with an Uchiha of all combatants was something she absolutely couldn't pass on. With the two strongest doujutsu of the Hidden Leaf working together, they'd likely overpower their competition, and their skillsets were somewhat similar without much overlap, allowing them to effectively take different roles in combat. As it is, Raika was certainly eager to show off a bit of what she could do, which she hadn't had the chance to do much since her return from Kawa and her subsequent assignment to Team 1; with her effectively failed mission to improve relations between Konoha and Kawa, it almost felt a bit like a punishment to simply be placed in a Genin Team, but she'd also not really proven herself capable of all the skills and effective combat experience shown by Chuunin, so she couldn't argue that the choice didn't make sense.

She watches as Kai prepares his weapon for this nonlethal training, and is glad to see that he's also wearing armor, meaning she won't need to completely hold back on her strikes and make the spar almost useless for training. Raika herself has decided to actually wear her armored vest; even with the glaive covered so that it wouldn't cause serious damage, she didn't want to be completely covered in bruises. Even so, she also kept her Hung Gar rings around her wrists. She actually gives him a bit of a smile at his statement that she wouldn't have to worry about going all out, and that she shouldn't kill him. In response to his eyes changing, Raika's own irises turn a pure white, with just a hint of the previous lavender color barely peeking through, and the veins at her temples showing the massively increased bloodflow from the activation of her own doujtusu.

"To be fair, Kai Uchiha, I'm not sure I could kill you even if I tried to. Not that I will."

Not really being the type to hold back or try for an indirect approach right away, Raika closes the distance to Kai at a rapid pace, running at first, and throwing a feint punch with her left hand at his face. But, with a shift from a push on her left foot, rotating to put all her weight on her right foot, she steps aside, twisting her hips rightwards and using her shoulder, arm, hip, and torso muscles to aim an uppercutting body shot at Kai's left side, about a foot and a half directly below his armpit to try and land a heavy blow just underneath where his ribcage ends. Should the strike hit, he'd likely bruise even through the padded armor he was wearing, more thanks to the Hung Gar rings wrapped around each of her wrists, to be honest, than just from her own physical strength. Even during her attack, her focus is more concentrated on Kai's own response than on her own attack.

A chin rub to watch his opponent, and then hands on either of his weapons, and he suddenly had to move... No, adjust- To his opponents strikes.

Everything of course felt slower. Like watching a movie at half speed. As the feint punch came in from the left, he'd typically have little time to calculate it- But with his enhanced perception he was able to notice the minute change in her body language as she ran through the strike.

He could see her attacks in motion before they hit! Hah, this would be easy, he just needed to dodge out of the-

So, we pause here to realize a quick note. Enhanced perception and reflexes does not necessarily mean you move faster as a person. And a genin's over confidence was always something to keep in mind.

With that said, he was able to move his arm down to block what would have otherwise been a nasty bruise to his ribs, instead hitting his left arm instead. He stumbled backwards from the blow, he realized just how foolish he had been. Right. Time for a new strategy.

As his right foot landed on the ground, he began to spin his glaive under his arms, letting it twist and swing to create a defensive layer before him as his eyes watched more carefully. He still had to move, yes- But he'd learned from that hit alone, and the pain that came from it- That he knew he had to put up a proper defense. The Sharingan wasn't a tool that could be used all on its own.

It was a tool to be used with the rest of the body, as he prepared for her next strike.

Raika feels a little proud of herself when Kai allows her to get close, and she, although indirectly, manages to land a hit on the Uchiha, or at least on his arm. And thanks to the added weight of the Hung Gar rings she was wearing, it even caused a bit more force to be added to her strike, causing him to stumble backwards. Her pride is visible on her face in the form of a smirk while she fully rights herself again, but is stopped from approaching for a follow-up hit by the sudden spin of the glaive that turns into a swing between the two of them, prompting the Hyuga to drop back a little. Now that she's a short distance away from Kai again, she drops her fighting stance for a moment and rotates her head across her shoulders, causing her neck to pop a little before she rights her head again.

"Mm, good deflection! You oughta keep in mind that sometimes not getting hit at all is better than just deflecting, but I like that swipe move you did ju-"

The Hyuga, without even dropping the speed or cadence of her speech, is suddenly launching a jump kick directly at the Uchiha's chest, being careful to focus her strikes at his armor rather than the usually much more fun face strikes. Of course, she wasn't wearing Hung Gar rings on her ankles, so the attack wouldn't be as powerful, and would really only work as a surprise. Of course, with the Sharingan, Kai would likely still be able to notice her body tensing in preparation for the attack- there wasn't much she could do about that, but hopefully her sudden self-interruption in the middle of her own sentence would have been distracting enough that he'd be caught off-guard, despite how focused he'd looked so soon after her last attack. Now that he knew about how her body moves in combat, she considered her surprise attack very unlikely to land, but it was a favorite trick she'd learned in the far less honorable village of Kawa. And it was a fun little trick, at that, and also very useful to teach to a fellow teammate.

The same trick wouldn't work twice. Doubly so a sneak attack would likely fall flat, so when she interrupted herself for a quick dynamic kick to the chest, the Uchiha was prepared. You see, the way he moved wasn't just some gentle swing to create a basic defense, it was an art in of itself.

Using a glaive was not quite like using a sword, or your bare hands. You had to think ahead, as you often had the weight of a weapon that took time to swing and change direction. This meant proper practice often involved the high swings and low jabs of the weapon had to be taken into consideration.

In this way, he'd made up for this by performing a constant state of movement, or something Ryu no Mai... Dragon Dance. As her kick aimed for his chest, he didn't allow a second strike to hit him- The pain was still very real on his arm as his weapon swung around from behind him and smacked the foot aside. It wasn't a damaging attack- It was purely defensive, a counter strike that would lead her flying to his side rather than directly at him- And in truth, were it not for the usage of his Kekkai Genkai, he'd likely be unable to calculate the proper movement to intercept a kick mid air with the flat of a weapon as large as a glaive.

But regardless, it reached his mark, and flowing into it, his entire body spun around to strike her in the chest with the pole end of the weapon- A sharp jab that didn't quite have the force of a frontal attack, but was aimed to more mark that he had obtained a hit, rather then an actual attempt to injure his opponent.

"No kidding... This is... New to me." He explained, knowing her distraction was still in good faith.

  • Performing Ryū no Mai defensively, into a basic offensive strike. Low chakra drain continuous.

Raika is almost glad to be the one surprised this time, and with the Byakugan lacking the predictive powers that the Sharingan is capable of, she's left to simply take the strike to her chest; thankfully, it was only with the pole end of the glaive, and so it was only a bit of pain that made it through the protective armor. She's at least still able to land on her feet effectively well, and now takes on a much more serious fighting stance now that each of the genin had landed at least one strike on each other. Her smirk has widened to a far larger grin now as she feels a bit of a rush through her entire body, excitement at meeting someone much more equal to her causing her quite a bit of obvious glee. Now, though, she wanted to see how her Uchiha teammate fares when he's on the offensive, so she changes her offensive posture to one that more closely matches the style of the Hyuuga clan's signature fighting style, the Juken.

Her legs bend slightly as she shifts her arms to a horizontal position, the hand closer to Kai pointing towards his waist palm down, while the hand on her opposite side has its palm poised upwards, at about the height of Kai's head; she's just within range to hit him with some of the tenketsu-closing strikes of the 64 palms, but she's already convinced herself that the use of any tenketsu would drastically shorten their training. Raika decides that she'll simply hit his tenketsu points without closing them; with the weight of the Hung Gar rings on her wrists, it's likely that Kai would feel any hits, even through the armor, but it was unlikely they would cause damage to his tenketsu points at all without the use of chakra.

"Not so new to me! Let's dance, Red Eye."

She went on the defensive? Interesting. Circling around, Kai continued to swing his weapon in a semi-predictable fashion. The problem of course, was that while it was easy to read, that didn't exactly make it any easier to dodge- The very way of the Dragon Dance meant momentum was not lost with each swing- So it was moving as quickly as a standard sword would be, with double the range and less overall pressure on the users body.

"Red Eye... Interesting." Now, Kai didn't know about the Hyuuga Kekkai Genkai much. He'd heard about it a few times, a few idle listenings here and there, and had seen it in action once or twice- But he couldn't say he knew about the techniques, or its weaknesses. Outside of outstanding eyesight, he didn't have any knowledge on it really, which meant his attack would have to be probing.

Ah. An idea came to mind. A twist of his weapon, and a fling into the air once he had distance, Kai would pull two kunai from his vest, tossing them into the ground- Burning explosive tags attached. Then, as if practiced before, he would expertly let his weapon fall back into his hands, giving it a wide, high arc swing over towards the womans shoulder. The weight of the attack was strong- It could easily cause some serious bruising- But he was holding back enough that he wouldn't break any limbs.

The real terror here was if she tried to dodge left or back, she'd be walking into the now exploding tags, and moving left would simply change the aim of the attack to her right shoulder or head instead, while keeping her at enough range that he could back away without being in punching range.

It was a risky play, but he figured it was the safest attack he could do without trying to cook her with a fireball jutsu or something.

Raika, without moving her head at first, watches him circle around her with his glaive swinging through the air and building up momentum until every movement is practically a strike waiting to happen. She considers moving in to strike as soon as he flings the glaive up into the air, and although she doesn't need to move her head, she follows its motion with her head, but then she figures it's going to be a lot more fun to freak him out a little when he tosses the pair of kunai into the ground, noticing the fact that the explosive tags were already burning, leaving them both with a short amount of time to react to this situation. Raika's entire body tenses in preparation for her response, but lets him at least get his glaive back so he can attempt an attack directly at her shoulder.

"Explosive tags? Tsk tsk."

She smirks a bit at the quite likely surprise he might feel if this is the first time learning about the power of the Byakugan's nearly 360 degree vision that would allow her to keep track of all of these different methods of attack. It had been fun to pull similar tricks on people in Kawa, especially pickpocketers, and so she was eager to see Kai's own reaction to this ability to see what's going on that should be outside of her field of vision when she'd been apparently focusing on the movement of the glaive being thrown into the air. Now, she uses that surprise to step not to either side or backwards, but directly into him, fully avoiding the swipe of the glaive with a rapid movement into him as she brings both legs in and rises up to a full standing position inches from his own body, slightly to his left side so her very short-range punch can attempt to land a hard strike directly into his diaphragm, aiming her palm to smash into the spot a little below the sternum along the center line of his body; with the Hung Gar ring adding power to her strike followed by a slam of chakra directly into him, should the strike hit, Kai would likely end up getting the wind knocked out of him. Of course, she holds back on some of the chakra she would normally inject into the strike; it'd knock the wind out of him without actually causing nearly as much internal damage, purely a hit meant to incapacitate. Whether the strike lands directly or correctly, or completely misses him, she continues her movement forward, letting her momentum push her forwards with her right arm free to respond to any counter-attack, as long as she's pressing both herself and Kai in the opposite direction of the explosive tags as they go off.

"Jeez, Red Eye. Explosives are a bit much for a training spar, but I guess I should be glad you didn't try to use any ninjutsu instead."

Raika takes a deep breath and reloads her forearms with a quick, jerking motion of both arms, then grins at the Uchiha again.

"Didn't want to cook you- And my explosive tags aren't exactly high-yield." He said as he tried to dodge backwards. Again, he had the visual reaction speed to garner attention towards the hits, but... The physical speed wasn't quite there, as her first landed in his diaphragm.

Yeah, that knocked the wind out of him alright, and perhaps a bit more- He felt, and she heard, a sickening crunch. Turns out perhaps she wasn't holding back as much as she should- As Kai gasped out in pain and flew backwards, slamming into the dirt and dust.

That could have been seriously lethal, he thought as he stared up the Hyuuga. He was still trying to regain his sense of self, but something told him he was not okay- And despite her holding back, the sheer force of her blow had ripped the skin beneath his armor and was staining it red with blood. Not to mention he couldn't get back up...

"I- Ow... I think.. .You tore something..." He panted, as he leaned back on the ground, staring up at the sky. It was getting more and more painful. She didn't damage something internally, he hoped, as he rubbed his hand against his soreness.

Although Raika wasn't very good at holding back, she'd at least had to learn quickly since returning from Kawa that she had to pull back as soon as she felt something was off. So when she heard the crunch and sensed a little bit more "give" inside Kai's body, she had immediately pulled her arm back and avoided pressing the advantage any further at all, like she would have done in a real combat scenario. Instead, she immediately went into a completely different kind of mindset, naturally switching from a fighting stance to using her Byakugan to look directly into Kai's body, while she gently presses him to fully lay on the floor, flat, and mostly ignoring any of his wincing or groaning from the pain and soreness. That said, she ignores his hands gripping at his own wound, since her Byakugan can simply see straight through his arms, and they might even be providing some amount of pressure. She'd seen her fair share of brutal gut stabbings, in real time and even with her Byakugan active, so she knew what she was looking for; no, she hadn't ruptured his diaphragm with her strike, so that was fine at least. It looks like she'd definitely given him an abrasion on his stomach where her palm had connected, and it actually looked like the worst that had happened had been a little bit of muscle strain in his abdominal muscles, likely when his body had tensed up during the strike, only for the musculature to be smashed into by her chakra burst, which had then gone past his diaphragm and simply knocked his spine slightly out of alignment. Luckily, the cracking sound hadn't been her breaking his spine. Her attack had simply bypassed through his armor and the force of her chakra slamming into him had simply caused his back to pop in a few places, simulating a cracking noise like breaking bone.

"It's just some torn abs, you big baby. Don't flex so hard, you panicked and hurt yourself more than I did when you tightened all your muscles like that. Your muscle strain is gonna hurt for a while, but it'll heal eventually anyways."

Now, though, Raika was a bit disappointed that she couldn't really do much to help him with his internal damage. She'd need a lot more training to become capable of using her natural skill with medical jutsu along with her knowledge of the human body and what it was supposed to look like versus what it could look like when damaged. She does have one way to help with his back, though...

"Hey. This is gonna hurt, so on the count of three..."

Raika pulls her Hung Gar rings off her wrists for now; if this works and he's well enough for at least a couple more minutes of training, they'll both have gotten at least something good out of this. She learned a little more about fixing people, and he'll have learned something about the Byakugan and about her combat style in general. It'd certainly make them a much more effective team in combat, since they know plenty about each other now. For the moment, she gingerly moves her directly underneath his misaligned spine, able to find it instantly thanks to her Byakugan looking directly at where the spot is.

"One. TWO!"

Raika doesn't wait for the three, and simply uses some light pressure and a sudden jolt of force to skillfully slip the vertebrae back into place on two. She knows better than to let Kai psych himself into tensing up to prepare for the pain and possibly make it worse by flexing his back muscles and causing the spine to crush itself in two. Of course, it doesn't help much for the pain mitigation, but at least now the pain should be gone quickly now that she can see that his spine is correctly aligned where it should be.

"Three.~ See? All better."

Unexpected, was the best way Kai could explain what was going on right now. One moment he was lying on the ground in pain, the next, the Hyuga heir had him flat on his back, carefully looking over him with her weird crazy eyes. He didn't know a ton about the byakugan, but he knew enough that she was using it in some sort of way to gauge how injured he was.

And she was doing a pretty good job of it as well, because she certainly made him feel better about the fact that he just wiped out hard from her jab. At least it wasn't something too serious. She also didn't tell him about his spine. That would have probably sent him into a short bit of panic, considering anything spine related was, in his eyes, usually something incredibly serious.

It was okay though- She seemed to know what she was doing even further as she pulled him up and aided him in getting his back... back together.

One... Two...

"GAH!" A shout of pain, sharp up his spine, sent him nearly reflex punching the Hyuga in the mouth, but he was disciplined enough to grab some dirt instead.

"Crap-- Yow... I was expecting a kiss on the boo-boo and a band aid, not physical therapy..." He grimaced, but the look on his face said it all- He was more than thankful for her assistance in making sure he was right and proper.

"I guess we should call of the fighting here for now though, right?"

Raika can't help but to grin a little when he makes that shout of pain; she'd seen far worse injuries out in the sticks, but those typically ended with gurgling and then silence. Screaming meant he was alive and relatively unharmed, so she wasn't going to feel too bad about his pained response. Still, she's a little worried at first, but seeing his toes curl from the pain response is enough for her to be certain that his spine is at least working fine. She just wishes she could do more for the muscle strain in his abdomen. She should really try and study up on medical ninjutsu so this kind of thing doesn't happen nearly so often in her training spars, and even if it does, she'll hopefully be able to heal it herself instead of having to send them to the hospital herself.

"You get kisses from your mama. You get fixes from me. For now, feet."

Without even another word between her statement and her actions, she grabs hold of his wrist and yanks him up onto his feet, and she can see that while he might still be a little wobbly, his spine is indeed straightened back into its appropriate place, ensuring that he's at least healed from his spine as much as she's capable of giving him. At least he hadn't punched her face, but even if she had, she was certain she would have only been in pain and not entirely knocked out; pain passes, and she'd learned not to hold grudges just for pain without any major injuries. Raika feels at least a little proud that he looks so thankful for her field medic work, although she's somewhat disappointed that their sparring is ending now. Still, that doesn't mean they can't do at least a little bit more training, just perhaps not anything too physically demanding.

"Yeah, definitely no combat for now. Not until you go to the hospital and have them repair your abdominal wall. I've watched a dock worker herniate himself once and you don't want that."

She shrugs a little, just to make sure Kai doesn't get nervous about that; while she doesn't want him exerting himself until they repair the abdominal muscle, it's really not such a big deal unless you're lifting something heavy. Still, she's mostly focused on training Taijutsu, at least at the moment, so she's not too certain that she and Kai have much to train on that wouldn't require some physical exertion. Then she remembers his Sharingan seems capable of tracking movement better than her own Byakugan and she gets an idea.

"I've got an idea! I'll just quickly train this Taijutsu technique and you can use your Sharingan to make sure I'm doing it correctly! Whaddaya think?"

When she lifted him up, Kai thought this was it- This was where he died. To some crazy Hyuga who was way too confident in her medical abilities. Pain, pain, pain as he stood, but once he was up, he was indeed standing. Perfectly still, not to aggravate his wounds any, as he looked up at her and her suggestions.

"That sounds fine to me. I can- Urgh- Keep wearing this armor until I get to the hospital as well, even if it's a bit stressful." He explained, adjusting his clothing a bit. He slowly got himself back up into a proper standing position, his Sharingan once again activating, as he gave a careful watch to her movements.

"I think I'll be able to tell if you screw up any little details. Even if I'm not getting any faster, my mind certainly is, which... Comes with it's perks." He calmly pointed out, still gently rubbing his tummy as he whimpered to himself.

Not that it was that bad, he was just being a big, dumb baby, but... Man, if this woman was going to be his new squadmate, at least he wouldn't have to worry about her being able to handle herself. Maybe that's why she was put on his team- Two dependable shinobi who he wouldn't have to worry about failing ever again.

...He hoped.

"Alright... Go for it. I'm watching." He smiled with a nod, crossing his arms slowly over his chest to not hurt himself further. Sheesh, she really hit like a truck.

Training: Konoha Reppu

Raika sees him rubbing his belly, and can hear him whimpering a little from the pain, and she frowns a little and takes a bit of a closer look... but no, his body isn't really all that hurt. If she wasn't directly in front of him, she might have scoffed at his apparent daintiness. At least he clearly knew how to make use of his glaive, so she wasn't going to call him out too much, especially right now when he was clearly not feeling up for retaliation, and certainly wasn't in any form to do so without causing more damage to himself. What's fun is that she can actually see him activate his Sharingan through her Byakugan, and it looked at least a little bit like what it looks like when a Hyuuga clan member activates their own clan doujutsu: a rush of chakra directly to their eyes and a little to the surrounding tissue. It's interesting, but only tangentially. At least he agrees to help her train, for now, after she'd already hurt him today. Raika can't help but to give Kai a big grin of appreciation for his agreement to help her out.

"All right! Thanks Kai! Hey, maybe you'll learn something from this, too..."

With that, Raika gets into position, initially by removing her Hung Gar rings from around her wrists and connecting them back together to her ankles. After getting her equipment in place, she gets up again right away, standing with her feet together, smartly connected and her body fully upright as she faces the training dummy. With a sudden motion, she rotates her entire body, dropping down to be able to swing her right leg, which was her back leg, all the way around to crash directly into the dummy with her heel, slamming firmly into its central post hard enough to compress the wood. The Hyuuga then retracts her leg and stands up again, before turning to look at Kai to see what he could suggest that might improve her strike.

Sighing, Kai leaned a bit on his glaive as he watched. In truth, this probably wasn't as bad as he was complaining about. Were this an actual fight, he probably could have kept going, he was just being a weakling because he could afford to right now. What a lazy bastard.

As she got into position, his eyes took careful watch over her form, slowly standing up a bit straighter as he watched her movements to a pinpoint. That was the neat part about the Sharingan- That advanced level of perception gave him a great deal of use even in basic training, and as the tomoe stared towards her body, as she spun around entirely to give the attack it's full blow. The first thing he could notice was probably something she'd noticed already- Spinning your entire body around for a strike was... Well...

He gently poked his glaive out with one hand, poking at her side.

"You're putting a lot of effort into an attack that leaves you wide open. If you can figure a way out to do it without having to spin all the way around, you'll be less vulnerable for a follow up strike." He observed. Even in her simple spin, he had noted three different areas he could have countered at. While he might not have been able to stop it, he had a hunch that a trained fighter, like what they were expected to go up against, would have no issue dodging and leaving her wide open to an easy strike.

"Instead of spinning, pivot your strength from one leg into the other. Maybe use some chakra to burn the energy. This way you don't leave so many openings, and can more easily react to a counter." He nodded. Even with her great vision, getting attacked from behind still left you open... Again, something that came down to the speed of the body versus the reaction times of the body. All the vision in the world was useless if you couldn't utilize it, and while someone like a Chuunin or Jounin might be able to perfectly protect all sides of their body, a Genin, well. They still had some training to do, thats why they were still genin.

"Now... Ow. We should probably hit the hospital now. This armor was good for protection, but... It seems I need to go back to the drawing board on my plans for the perfect set..." He coughed with a smirk, deactivating his sharingan.
