TSUCHI NO KUNI

Overall Description

The Land of Earth (土の国, Tsuchi no Kuni) is known for having some of the strongest and most military minded inhabitants. Its government leader is the Earth Daimyō, a man whose funded many of his shinobi village's wars. The country is mostly comprised of desolate, rocky areas. The border of the Land of Earth runs along a rocky mountain range, blocking communication with other countries. The wind blowing from the north passes over these mountains, carrying small rocks from the Land of Earth to the surrounding countries. This famous natural phenomenon is called "Rock Rain" (岩雨, Gan'u). The "Rock Rice Cake" (岩餅, Iwa Mochi, English: Rock Mochi) is a regional specialty of the Land of Earth. The crispy texture of the rice cakes is said to be irresistible.

While the Land of Earth is comprised from a lot of harsh terrain such as large mountains and harsh stone riddled plains; it's various mines have ensured a mass amount of wealth for the country. This wealth has in turn allowed them to fund Iwagakure which is reputed as one of the "Major Five" shinobi villages, and is considered the most military able country.

Iwagakure no Sato

Appearance

Iwagakure no Sato is the most militaristic village in the shinobi world, it'd entire construction looking akin to a concrete jungle. The village is sported into the very mountainous range, with the Tsuchikage tower sitting at the tip of the tallest mountain. It's height only challenged by a surrounding bowl formation of rock. There's only one path to this village a commoner could travel and live, it's placement in the middle of some of the windiest and heightest mountains of Tsuchi no Kuni's ranges.

Iwagakure's defensive positioning is both in it's creation and it's placement, it's buildings are burn proof and require amazing force to destroy. It's surroundings weren't hospitable to travelers and only mountain goats and birds traveled the landscape. The village hidden by a natural wall of mountains and vast dead end caverns from past miners.

Iwagakure itself doesn't have the most vast population, but it's population is mostly active shinobi. A record seven-eighths, but this leaves the village smaller in comparison to many. It however greatly depicts the long standing stride of military minds. They carved their homes into the mountains and the larger clans turned rock into glory fantasy and beyond. The central districts home to the founding clans, it's larger less acknowledge clans in the middle and the outskirts often the poverty. Some like to rumor the village isn't a village, but a military camp.

History

Founding of the Village

Iwagakure was founded by its five clans of nobility 87 years ago by the first Tsuchikage, Himishi Ujiyasu. When the five clans got together, they formed a pack with the Earth Daimyo and established the hidden village, a standard which was taking place among other nations. These five clans, Himishi, Kamizuru, Tantetsu, Hisakawa and Yutakako, united the land of earth together with their massive army and resources and put an end to the wars within their home land. Chaos within the continent was coming to a gradual halt with the one shinobi village per nation system that had been established many years prior, and those of Iwa began to enjoy their time of peace.

During this period, Ujiyasu was looking to assimilate more land for the land of earth and set his eyes on the state of fields, a small nation that yet to have its own shinobi nation. War still existed there and Ujiyasu gathered a number of his shinobi, convincing them that to free these poor folks from war they had to assimilate them. As his campaign finally brought his troops into the territory of the state of fields, Ujiyasu found another village's troops already stationed within the state: Konoha. He felt that the state of fields belonged to the land of earth and that it was their right to own due to the land's involvement with the state many years ago. As he was about to confront the Leaf's troops himself, the man received a message calling for a gathering of the Five Kage. Seeing this as an opportunity to take the issue at hand directly to the Hokage, the Tsuchikage commanded his troops to halt in place while he traveled to the destination this meeting would take place.

The First Kage Summit

The First Kage Summit took place in a grand room on a circular table. Each Kage brought with them two bodyguards. Ujiyasu himself enlisted the help of two of his closest friends, Kamizuru Akatsuchi and Touken Izaiya, and sat in his place at the table of Kage. Ujiyasu wasted no time bringing up the issue regarding the state of fields, declaring to the Hokage directly that the land belonged to the land of earth and that he should remove his troops from the state. The arguments went back and forth, but in the end Ujiyasu and the Shodai Hokage, Hatake Hiro, could not meet eye to eye. Ujiyasu left with his comrades and returned back to Iwagakure.

Clashes with Konoha and the Gobi & Rokubi

Ujiyasu pressed on with his conquest of the state of fields and over the course of a few years he and his troops battled with those of Konoha. Skirmishes were fought over a long period of time and nearing the end it seemed as though Iwa was going to come out victorious. However something completely unexpected occurred which forced Ujiyasu to withdraw all of his troops from the state and back to Iwa.

A natural disaster unlike anything the people of Iwa had seen before occurred. A giant beast with five tails ripped through Iwa's outer walls like a raging bull and began running amuck within the village. Ujiyasu quickly identified it as a tailed beast. Having heard the stories, he prepared as many troops as he could in such a short amount of time to fight the beast. The battle lasted hours and Iwa lost many of their valued troops, however with the help of Akatsuchi, Izaiya, and Yutakako Merina, Ujiyasu brought the demon to its knees and sealed it within a gigantic scroll. He predicted the sealing formula was unstable, and that in a short amount of time the beast's power would break it and it would be released. With little time to spare, he sealed the beast within himself, becoming Iwa's first Jinchūriki.

While tensions with Konoha continued to sour and worsen, the First Tsuchikage continued to amass power. Once such instance was an expedition into deep mountain caves. There the Tsuchikage and the same Retinue that had captured the Gobi this time fought the great Six Tailed Slug Saiken. Though the fighting was much more brutal than that with the Gobi, by the end they boasted not one Bijuu, but two.

The First Shinobi World War and the death of the Shodai

Soon though, the constant clashes with Konoha had gotten worse and worse, boiling out into a war that soon engulfed every nation. Allying themselves with the Shinobi Villages of Amegakure and Kumogakure, Iwa would focus most of its attention on the heavy fighting with Konohagakure, turning Nohara no Kuni, and by extension, Kusagakure, into a battlefield.

During the last days of the war, in a massive battle between Iwagakure and Konohagakure forces, the Shodai Tsuchikage died, and with it the Gobi was released. During this battle, both sides were shattered by the Beast's appearance, with Konoha-nin fleeing and Iwagakure forced to reseal their Bijuu and lick their wounds.

With most of their leadership wiped out, including their Kage, Iwagakure, like many was too crippled to continue the fighting. Though due to his brave actions, as well as the subduing of the Gobi during the war, Kamizuru Akatsuchi was named as the Nidaime Tsuchikage.

The Nidaime Myth

Shortly after assuming the position of Nidaime, Akatsuchi had disappeared from the public eye. Gaining the infamy of a monster of legend or a myth, it had seemed that Iwa’s opinion of their new leader had dipped, with his face never being seen by anyone within the village. Though his work was done to the letter, even pulling Kusagakure to their side in the peace that followed the First Shinobi World War.
Soon it was popular opinion that the Kage was only made up as a tool to get them in line, this rumor was quickly quashed by his reemergence into the world. Konoha had sent assassins into Iwagakure, A move by the Hokage, Inuzuka Kagame, in an attempt to show Iwagakure its place.

This was a foolish one, and the Tsuchikage ended up visiting Konoha personally to demand recompense. With Konoha denying the claims that it was them, Tsuchikage soon retaliated with their full might, dragging the two villages back into war, along with the other villages around the world.

The Second Shinobi World War

This timing forming a great alliance versus Konoha and its allies, Iwagakure would fight with a brutal ferocity. Utilizing their environment to their advantage, as well as the impeccable work of the Defense Corps, Iwagakure became the most heavily defended fortresses of the war, never once being threatened by Konoha and its allied forces.

The only interruption to this was another attack of the Gobi when it escaped it's Jinchūriki inside the village, though again this was stopped and the Bijuu was sealed away inside a container.

Though Iwagakure was raring to continue its war with Konoha, the death of the Yugakure Lord, a then ally of the Kamizuru, was the trigger for the nonaggression pact between the warring villages to be signed. Iwa once again put down its arms for peace.

Kusagakure's Betrayal

Though the war was over, Iwagakure was still sour over a number of reasons. The most prominent would be the theft of the Rokubi Jinchūriki by their then allies in Kusagakure. While the Nidaime Tsuchikage demanded that their Jinchūriki be returned, all that was given was a body, the Bijuu being reported to have escaped.
The Nidaime did not believe it however, and went on a personal search for the Rokubi in vain, the Bijuu having been pilfered by Kusa.

The Third Shinobi World War

Barely a year after the end of the Second Shinobi World War, Sunagakure would break it by sending assassins to the other Village Leaders, the Tsuchikage being one of them. This gave Iwagakure the excuse they needed, not only to go to war with Sunagakure, but to continue their feud with Konoha.

During the Third War, Iwa was out for blood and brutality above all. Konohagakure, Kusagakure, and Sunagakure were prime targets, with the lack of a Gobi Jinchūriki, the Iwa nin were forced to fight harder and stronger than most, their Shinobi making an me for themselves during the heavy bloodshed.

The fighting would reach a tantamount when Iwagakure pushed itself in the desert. This time was marked by heavy fighting in the dunes of Kaze no Kuni, Iwa intent to break the Village Hidden in the Sand itself. Fighting their ways to the walls of Sunagakure, Iwa would lay a great siege.

During this siege the Nidaime Tsuchikage himself would personally appear, hungry for revenge on the attempt at his life. Iwagakure forces ended up breaking their way inside Sunagakure, and the Village was nearly destroyed by the heavy fighting.

Once the dust settled The Nidaime Kazekage was dead at the hands of the Tsuchikage, and most of the village was conquered under Iwagakure.

The Uneasy Peace

Though Iwagakure wanted to hold Suna as one of its territories, the truth of the matter that the war was too costly, and Iwa too crippled by the brutal siege to even try to claim the village. Returning to Tsuchi no Kuni at last, and leaving Suna to rebuild.

From here Iwagakure itself would enter a state of uneasy peace like the rest of the world. Licking its wounds the Village of Stone would return to the prewar normalcy, though it was ever vigilant, as the Tsuchikage still had plans for conquest.

Eager to regain the lost Rokubi, as well as territories they felt belonged to them, mainly that of Ishi no Kuni and Nohara no Kuni, Iwagakure would start a plan of conquest in secret, with backing from Tsuchi no Kuni's Daimyo of course. Stockpiling weapons as well as finding a new host for the Gobi to go to war with the Land of the Samurai, Tetsu no Kuni, Iwagakure was ready to take over the land to build the army for the coming conquest of the world.

A number of higher ups in Iwagakure took exception to this, splitting many of the shinobi between siding with the Nidaime Tsuchikage, and the Council members headed by Tantetsu Nerukō. While tensions up at the leadership escalated and escalated, they finally boiled over with the Nidaime Tsuchikage was slain in a duel between he and Tantetsu Nerukō.

The King is dead, long live the King

With the Nidaime Tsuchikage, or "King" as he had claimed, dead in battle, and Nerukō jailed for killing the Tsuchikage, a new leader had to be chosen. With the Council being against the Tsuchikage's plan of conquest, they would instead vote in Nerukō's son and executioner, Tantetsu Kyoya. While Kyoya was more prone to peace than the Tsuchikage before him, unrest still boiled through the ranks, many in the village thirsting for Iwa's domination over the world.

The Usurper Kage is slain

This Tension manifested by A number of Iwagakure Shinobi, headed by Nōhime Kouen, waging a secret civil war against the current leadership. With the small skirmish between the leadership boiling over, the Shinobi lead by Kouen would win out. Made from mostly veterans and war hawks, the more peace oriented Council and Sandaime didn't stand a chance.

Though the Sandaime attempted a last ditch assassination against Kouen that too failed. Following that Kouen would have his allies bring the Sandaime before him before executing the Usurper Kage as he had come to be known. Kouen was then sworn on as the Yondaime Tsuchikage, a short lived ruling though as Kouen's ambitions outweighed his image. Ruling with fear and force Kouen who believed himself a nationalist, would be betrayed by his own populace.

The growing bounty of Kouen was a part of his undoing, as he'd be a credited to the death's of a Hokage, Raikage, and so on. Anywhere something horrible happened it often had some rumor to the bandaged man, but not all rumors are false.

An attempt to silence his enemies was only shortly followed by another cry for war, it wasn't as though the village opposed wars, but based on the enemy and length of conflict his village lost faith in him. Kouen rise would lead to a conflict in Ishigakure, an attack he'd fail to accomplish then followed by a civil war. The Civil War claimed many things a belief certain clans had abused their power and lost their site of the little guy and the important details. Even those clanless in Iwagakure knew how to fight.

Rise and Rebellion; Birth of Democracy

Kouen no longer seated in his village and no longer the talk of the town, his village lost faith in his rule and rose to overthrow his mistakes. Surprisingly enough two of the founding clans would fight for the rebellion and to over throw the Nohime. Tantetsu and Yutakako; In an attempt to squelch the rebellion early foreign assistance was called in by both sides. Iwagakure with Takigakure and Amegakure shinobi all fought over Kouen holding the throne.

Kouen's presence was lacking and ultimately was captured and not killed by Rebel forces. Major battles were fought by key players, a couple important mines were caved in and ultimately the Nohime lost on most fronts. It's believed Kouen surrendered foreseeing his doom and with one last attempt of nationalism quelled a war one last time. It's a considered belief as Tantetsu would choose to lock up, but not readily execute Kouen.

However, the Tantetsu's decisions were few in his short internship, as a main figure in the rebellion he'd be entrusted with the future of the village. He'd make a strong claim to be a peaceful body, but there was one main decision that seemed to back track on his claim. He'd militarize the village bijuu sealing it in a local boy. He didn't prove his words with action and betrayed some.  Tantetsu decided, and the village council agreed, that they needed a new leader. Through much discussion a new way to pick one would also be devised.

Approved and hosted by the Daiymo's heir, a village election would give Iwagakure the first democratically chosen leader. There were three candidates decided upon to debate each other, as well as one individual the village Jinchuuriki who stood to ask for the vote of Tsuchikage. Only two of the promoted candidates would arrive and both late, Yutakako Takara and Tonoda. Two individuals with some complimenting beliefs and both driving for the 'peoples' vote instead of established clans. However Takara's name was a founding name and at the end of the debate she'd gain popular vote with over four percent approval.

Takara has claimed the title Godaime Tsuchikage, the first Tsuchikage appointed democratically as well as the first Kage chosen democratically. Takara claims to want to rebuild her nation, to strengthen the bonds of her allies and to root out corruption. She however holds no allergy to war and shows a natural disdain for the village Kusagakure. Bold promises made her have an edge now she works to keep to them to keep it, but too little time has passed to tell if she will and can. Only time can say what's in store for Iwagakure next.

Yamanashi

Appearance

Yamanashi is settled next to Tsuchi no Kuni's largest body of inland water, it's surrounded by plains and considered to be placed in the most level part of the country. There's but one steep cliff which crests around the lake, it's this odd elevation that the original settlers used to setup fort. The capital and what's considered a rich district of the city is atop this high rise and overlook the rest of the mostly level city.

The buildings below this risen district are very uniform and appear to be made of a fine white marble, as the rooves are created from rich foreign woods. Those who live in the lower districts would look nothing like poverty, it's due to this many see Yamanashi as the land of earths sigil of wealth and health. At the very edge off the city just within city walls are clear well taken care of plots of land. An easy area for merchants to setup and an area which fills with life each morning and pours out each night into an empty clear lawn almost.

Most buildings don't stand much higher than two stories without it being a business, as the city is spread wide to accommodate everyone in it with space. This was partially done in an attempt to make the city look all the more grand for tourist, as well as to make merchants see it miles away.

History

Yamanashi is considered the first city of Tsuchi no Kuni, it was founded by entrepreneurs and formed the first military prior to Iwagakure's founding. It's wealth impart came from funding and convincing the development of key mining, shipping and trading depots in order to create the later draw the borders of the country. It's said the first Daiymo earned his title not by his deeds, but by the many debts the surrounding land came to owe him.

Yamanashi almost lost it's title as capital until the marble revolution, when the Daiymo took a risky gamble and spent what's considered the lands debt in gold on this renovation of his city. It was a project that more than quadrupled the residential space and finally put it behind a wall which gave both a feeling of security and wealth. It'd be at this time many claimed that land was no longer the Daiymo's but Yamanashi's.

After Yamanashi's renovation the had been Daiymo would be the last of his family lineage to rule the Earth country. It'd be then that the land shifted hands, but it'd be the last shift that occurred. As the family which took over as Daiymo would barely overlap the wealth of the previous Daiymo and be the original supporter of Iwagakure's creation. There decision along with the coming wars would allow them to sky rocket in wealth and leave every other family exponentially less wealthy. This wealth though has always been used to the benefit of the nation and thus created a lasting capital in Yamanashi

Fast Facts
Yamanashi was impart founded in correlation with many of the clans who later formed the Samurai. These people though weren't persuaded through wealth and thus Earth Country is half the size it's original settlers had imagined obtaining.

Shizouka

Appearance

Shizouka is also known as the sister city to Yamanashi, it's one of the earliest cities formed in Tsuchi no Kuni. It was originally a mining site, which dedicated itself to task almost religiously. A rumor came around that the people who worked at Shizouka were blessed by the earth with relentless and inhuman strength. Many would travel far to test or train their metal and work the mines, but the mines would after long enough work the people.

After thirty years of mining one particularly metal rich mountain, they'd found it'd been almost cratered in appearance. Building up and around this creator they created a wall and jokingly put three massive gates leading into the other half of the mountain. A city would grow within this crater and fill it, but then out of lunacy perhaps, the workers and miners decided this would be THE mining city. Their mines proceed into, under and out to all the earth surrounding Shizouka, it's believed there's mining shafts leading through all surrounding mountains.

Most crazily as the city grows in population it seems to have since stopped expanding. Instead the very mountain mined into originally has been hollowed out and there's an entire other half of the city now hidden behind once joking stone gates. Furthermore, the larger tunnels under the city have carved in houses or motels. Much of the cities inner workings is quite the polar opposite of Yamanashi. Cramped minimalist and yet made out of a mixture of stone and metal.

History

Shizouka was founded shortly after Yamanashi and came about when a family of settlers claimed they'd find and forge the finest of steels. A dream to live in a steel metropolis was housed in these people, but via stiff early exceptions and just a grueling life there lived little dream in the settlers of Shizouka. They all were beat or broken and soon saw more and more following in their wake, they felt challenged and proceeded to build their mining settlement.

A major family fragmented into branches would continue to grow competitive, but also violent and take to the more exciting life choices. Their work and wealth, it seemed so much better spent in the fleeting moment. Infrastructure was developed as an after though in this city and much of it looks ready to collapse, but those would be a fools concern. Everyone who lives in Shizouka is relentless craftsmen. If you weren't a miner, mason and blacksmith you were poor and hungry.

What this city produced was flawless, what couldn't be flawless formed homes and helped strengthen the tunnels of an ever growing mining network. Shizouka has always had incredibly ripped civilians with weapons galore to protect them, upon the announcement of a shinobi nation. Much of the miner settlement was at arms and against such involvement. Due to such the city has basically never had a large garrison of Iwagakure shinobi. This city considers itself self sufficient, but it's technically overpaid for food for a long time.

Tsuruoka

Appearance

Tsuruoka is the largest port city in all of Tsuchi no Kuni, it is an incredibly beautiful seaside residence. Whose positioning makes it only really threatened by the pirates between Yuki no Kuni and Tsuchi no Kuni. There influence actually in large helped develop a city that is comprised of many pleasures. This city lacks much in defensive fortifications, so the entire atmosphere feels far more at ease. This city is known for having some of the finest casinos and the most alluring red light districts.

Tourist typically come to this city for romantic occasions and there's many shops which make it clear this is less a family and more an adult resort. Though there are more than enough families in the residential district set back from the sea, even this cities capital is pulled back almost detached from the main city. A testament to the type of people and occasions this city was used to, as the locals almost keep themselves separate from the very businesses they run.

History

Tsuruoka was the first major port of the country and it's location acted almost as a guide to the two streams into the country. It however was also awkwardly placed quite a few mountains away from many of the cities with a military edge. This meant that the government of this city quickly came corrupt with actual criminals running the land. However there was a debt long owed to the Daiymo and it was often an endearing ball and chain to put whoever took head of city into complying to their ordnance.

Wealth often determined the leader of Tsuruoka, but rarely was it pure tangible wealth. Typically it was wealth invested in physical force and for a long time the village had a bad air about it. Though it'd allow it to grow into a very prosperous city, whose only problem was most it's profit came in illegal or morally bankrupt means.

Recent years a relatively faceless individual rose to the head of trade as well as the head of Tsuruoka, her name is Izanami Hatsumomo. After an incredibly rough childhood, the woman would through looks and emotional sway. Dethrone the city and take control over it, she'd sway in a powerful shinobi's aid and free her city of it's near solely murky nature. Her wealth though often split into security would rival many who'd long been born into a wealthy industry.

Kuwana

Appearance

Kuwana is an obscure city built along a major river of Tsuchi no Kuni, as well as very close to the second largest body of inland water for the land. It prospers from fishing, the local mining and being an incredibly easy to defend trading outpost. It's though far grown beyond it's natural inclinations and grew to be the youngest of major large cities in the land. As well as being able to compete in terms of wealth with all the surrounding cities and villages. Even Iwagakure and it's subsisted military pay.

Kuwana is an oddity in it's stone sculptors housing a very recently built church to commemorate the Tsuchikage's embrace of a refuge population. It's stone is clearly of a different cut and year than the rest of the city and sits atop the center most peek of the city. Nearest the river towards the lake is an arena, it's one of the largest stone colosseums and is placed dynamically to allow for the ability to be flooded and giving them the ability to host mock sea battles.

Despite the wealth of the cities major and leader, they're actual home is merely the largest mansion in the city. It's stature is almost identical to it's neighbor and sits on a peak of land next to the church whose center and on the opposite side of the city from the colosseum. This city has the third largest port in the land and through clever placement has essentially laid claim to the entire inland lake. Allowing this body of water to turn into essentially a safe ground for rich to sail their expensive ships.

Kuwana was built only a couple decades prior to Iwagakure, it was actually a gateway for many foreign soon shinobi to arrive. It was a very small port originally built with the intention of bridging a river and trade. It'd however... [TBD]

Kinoishi

Appearance

Kinoishi serves as the furthest north city in the land of earth, it's conditions are far more consistent with it's neighbors in the land of iron. This city more or less fortified large town, acts as a force poised to protect the cost and western border of the country. In the same sense Iwagakure is more shinobi than civilians, Kinoishi is a military fort where most it's civilians are trained in close quarters combat. There's a decent amount of mining or almost chore work done at this bleak frozen fortress, but it's clear that nothing is truly produced from this place. It's stand an ill omen to keep any other nations military from thinking it can invade the land.

This city is made more so out of metal than stone and it's peoples only past times are child making and street fighting. Due to the heavy militarstic nature of the country and it's past few Daiymo, this city has always had a survivable allowance as well sufficient supplies for it's boisterous military. The cities interior is less like a real city and more like one massive concrete building with steel dividers.
